Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications. Its first industrial synthesis was by Karl Rehn and Guilio Natta in 1954, which served as a preliminary work for large-scale synthesis from 1957 onwards. The global market for polypropylene is estimated to reach a production level of 45 million tons on an annual basis.PP is produced by the polymerization process of the monomer propylene. This polymerization reaction process is shown schematically:

The orientation of each methyl group (-CH3) relative to that of the methyl groups on neighboring monomers has a strong effect on the finished polymer’s ability to form crystals, since each methyl group takes up space and constraints backbone bending. By using appropriate catalysts, the final product can perform a high level of crystalline structure, thus resulting in enhanced mechanical strengths. Most commercially available polypropylene is made with Ziegler-Natta catalysts, which produce isotactic PP. With the methyl group consistently on one side, such molecules tend to coil into a helical shape; these helices then line up next to one another to form the crystals that give commercial PP many of its desirable properties.

PP ADVANTAGES

• Fire resistanceWith the addition of proper chemical substances to the PP raw material, the product becomes non-flammable. Thus, in case of fire, its spread and maintenance through the drainage system are prevented. According to the standard DIN 4102, PP has been classified in “not easily flammable materials” (class B1).

• Corrosion resistance Due to their smooth surface, PP pipes not only have great resistance to abrasion, but also prevent the accretion of various substances (dirt, grease, salts, microbes), thus their erosion is avoided. Moreover, they exhibit high resistance to caustic solutions and detergents, which often flow within the drainage systems.

• Vibrations absorptionΡΡ pipes can absorb the expansions, contractions and vibrations in buildings. In case of an earthquake, the elastic lip seals can absorb the seismic energy, so that the appearance of cracks and fractures in the pipes and fittings is avoided.

• Environmentally friendlyΡΡ is 100% recyclable material. It can be recycled, burned or buried in the ground without charging the environment, and, according to Greenpeace, is classified in “healthy” materials.

• Mechanical strengthsΡΡ pipes have higher strength to hydraulic pressure and higher impact resistance, even at low temperatures, compared to pipes made of other materials.

CHARACTERISTICS OF PP PIPES AND FITTINGS

The PP pipes and fittings for building installations meet the requirements of the European standard EN 1451 (class B). Τhe PP products are suitable for usage inside buildings (homes, hospitals, professional and industrial constructions etc) for drainage networks, air ducts, and hot water installations (kitchen, laboratories etc). The colour of PP pipes and fittings is grey (RAL 7037).

NOTES

The Technical Report ISO /TR 10358 : 1993 establishes a classification of the chemical resistance of pipe materials to specified fluids over a range of temperatures. This report provides only preliminary classification of the chemical resistance of pipes and fittings which are not subjected to pressure. The pipe material mentioned is: PP Polypropylene

CONVEYING DRAINAGE NETWORK DESIGN

• The drainage networks need to have ventilation in order to avoid the pressures inside the pipe • There are two types of pipes networks: the thermal ventilation and the parallel ventilation.• Special attention is needed when connecting pipes and fittings.

The European Standard EN12056 gives guidlines of the Criteria in the design of a waste system.

THERMAL EXPANSION/CONTRACTION

When PP contacts hot waste water, an increase in pipe length occurs. Taking into consideration the coefficient of linear thermal expansion for PP 0.11 and the mathematic formula ΔΙ= L• λ• ΔT, where: Δl : is the expansion (contraction) of PP piping system (in mm)L : is the initial length of PP piping system (in m)λ : is the coefficient of linear thermal expansion for PP = 0.11

ΔT: is the difference between the lower and the higher expected temperature (in oC)it is easy to calculate the expansion (or the contraction) of a PP system. For example: ΔT = 30 oC L = 3m λ= 0.11

Δl = 3 • 0,11 • 30mm =+9,9mm That is: a 3 m pipe expands to 3,0099m

THREE LAYER PP PIPES TRIPLEX

The TRIPLEX pipes for building installations meet the requirements of the European Standard EN 1451-1 (class B) and they are available in grey colour (RAL 7037), in 500mm, 750mm, 1000mm, 1500mm, 2000mm and 3000mm pipe length. They are suitable for use in waste water drainage systems, air ducts and rain water systems in residencies, hospitals, public, professional and industrial buildings etc.The inner and outer layers of the TRIPLEX pipes consist of compact PP, while the intermediate layer is of specially treated PP that provides excellent sound insulation.

ADVANTAGES

• High sound proof propertiesDrainage systems in the buildings produce noise due to the water flow through the pipelines. The vibrations coming from the water flow are transmitted through the walls to the adjacent places, thus increasing the noise limits at an annoying level. For example, the noise produced by the telephone, the bath tap and the dishwashing machine have been measured to be 60dB, 45dB, 36dB respectively, while the noise from the three layer TRIPLEX pipes is much lower. This attribute is of exceptional importance, since the sensibility of human hearing to the level of noise is not linear. An increase or decrease of 3dB equals to doubling or halving of the sound power. The TRIPLEX system has been certified by Fraunhofer Institut fur Bauphysik in Stuttgart, which is the best laboratory for acoustic tests. The test method that was used to measure the noise level of the drainage system is in consistency with EN 14366 standard. The test results obtained by the above mentioned Institute confirm the acoustic protection of TRIPLEX systems, estimating the noise produced by the TRIPLEX system to be 22dB.

14

CONNECTION, TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE

CONNECTION OF PIPES AND FITTINGS

The connection of PP pipes and fittings is simple, quick and easy due to the double lip seal in the socket. The lip seals make the installation easy and quick, and they ensure excellent leak-tightness, so that the assembly becomes simple without using any glue or special equipment. The connection is made by putting the straight end in the socket up to the point it stops. In case one might need to cut the pipe at a length different than the one the pipe already has, a special cutting tool should be used in order to prevent the pipe’s damage. The pipe should be cut vertically to its axis and, then, the ends have to be knurled (e.g. with rasp) at approximately 15o. For achieving a better application, the free ends of the pipes would better be covered with a proper lubricant. It has to be emphasized that the fittings should remain as they are.

TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE

The PP pipes of 150mm, 250mm and 500mm in length are packed in carton boxes, while the pipes of 750mm, 1000mm, 1500mm, 2000mm and 3000mm in length are placed in special clamps according to the size of packaging. It is suggested that the pipes and fittings should not be exposed at high temperatures or under the sun for a long period of time.During their loading and unloading, the PP pipes should be placed with particular care with the sockets standing out alternatively, so that any deformations are avoided.Particular care is required during transportation, when the ambient temperature is below 0oC, so that the pipes are not touching down.
