The Intelligent Side of Party Foul
• Conservation of Linear Momentum (Car and ball)
– mcarvcar+mballvb all= mcarvcar’+mballvball’
• Conservation of Angular Momentum (Pendulum and cup)
– Ipen.ωpen. + Icupωcup = Ipenωpen’ +Icupωcup’
• Gravitational Potential Energy to Kinetic Energy(Ball rolling down ramp ; ball falling from cup)– mgh=½mv2
– Vfinal=√2gh/1+x ; vfinal=√2gh
– vfinal=√[2(9.81m/s2)(.11m)]/[3/2] ; vfinal=√2(9.81m/s2)(.34cm)– Vfinal=1.2m/s ; vfinal= 2.58m/s
• Torque (Ball striking cup to flip it over)
– τ=Iα and τ=r x F
Road Bumps
• The Mousetrap: can kill a mouse but cannot cut thread.
• The wood: either splits or the nails aren’t long enough.
• Stability: “just make the base bigger.” • The solution for any problem: Duct tape.
Good Riddance, Party Foul.
• What started as a “simple idea” turned out to be not so simple.
• Worked out all of the problems to the point of functionality.
• Completed the goal and worked well together.
