CEU PRESENTATIONS

We wrapped up our CEU presentations for the year with an overview of Somatic Experiencing with Joe Persinger, PhD. A small group came out in the Autumn mist and were rewarded for the effort. I hope you all are enjoying the refreshing fall weather.

Thanks to all who attended the O’Sullivan Detection of Deception workshop, and helped to make it a success. And we are particularly grateful to Vic Howard and the Scottish Rite, for hosting the affair, Tesa Carlsen and Meghan Tiedemann-Fuller, for logistics and CE coordination, Mike Pinkston, for postal liaison, and Kristine Bartlett, Vickie Dwyer, and Melissa Staehle, for on-site assistance.

In follow-up to my previous column concerning psychologist participation in interrogations that violate the Geneva Conventions and other human basic rights, I heard from 7 RPA members, via email, letter, phone, or in person. This is too small a percentage (06%) of membership to justify any official RPA action. 5 members were in favor of RPA’s taking a position against the APA’s refusal to find such participation unethical; 1 member was undecided; 1 member supported the APA’s position. Thanks to all who responded.

My own thinking has evolved somewhat. In the previous column, although indicating that I had signed a petition opposing the APA’s position condoning psychologist participation in these interrogations, I had considered that many APA members are not clinicians, and therefore are not inevitably committed to ideals of human development. I had made the point that it might be unfair to require non-clinical psychologists to embrace an ethical position (in the same way that a plumbers’ organization might be presumptuous to enforce a particular ethical vision on its members).

In thinking further on this, however, I note that APA in fact does have a formal ethics code, to which all members are required to adhere. If the APA did not have an ethics code, my earlier argument might have stood. But having an ethics code should require, in my opinion, that the code be, by the lights of the great majority of its members, moral, non-hypocritical, and altogether decent. (Another option would be for APA to give up its ethics code altogether.)

On September 29th, Maureen O’Sullivan, Ph.D, of UCSF and the Ekman Group, taught enthusiastic participants how to recognize the facial cues that indicate deception, indicating a need for further investigation. The face cannot completely mask deliberate lies as emotion ultimately leaks by way of these facial cues. It was a fascinating day which left many asking, “When’s the two day workshop?” O’Sullivan is articulate, engaging, and passionate about her work. At the end of the seminar the participants were visibly energized, even after a long day of rapt attention, experiential exercises and spending the day indoors! Food and lively conversation followed at Milt and Lea Harris’ garden where tables were set for the catered reception for Dr. O’Sullivan and attending participants. Great fun! Thanks again to all the volunteers who made the day go so smoothly. And thanks to all who called offering their assistance.

Detection of Deception workshopa huge success

O’Sullivan answered questions and spoke with workshop participants during a break.

Participants enjoyed a buffet lunch and gathered with old friends and met new ones.

After a full day of focused attention, folks enjoyed the catered reception for O’Sullivan in the beautiful garden of Milt Harris and Lea Good-Harris.

RPA president, Milt Harris, greeted the more than 60 psychologists, MFTs, Social workers, attorneys, and college instructors, and introduced Maureen O’Sullivan, Ph.D.

Two Steps Forward, One Step Back

The journey toward licensure is often an isolating experience and can get pretty bumpy before it’s over. While still recovering from the exhausting process, the newly licensed psychologist must think about office space, business license, insurance, and a host of new challenges depending on the kind of work they’ve chosen to do.

Melissa Staehle, Ph.D, Kristine Bartlett, Psy.D, Jennifer Holland, Psy. D, and Vickie Dwyer, Psy.D, all licensed for under 5 years, will be sharing this space. They will share their experiences of the process, and answer questions the pre-licensed RPA members will be asking very soon. They will respond to questions asked by other newly licensed members, researching when necessary.

They’ll introduce themselves in the next few newsletters. If others would like to participate, please call Tesa Carlsen at 996-8222 or email [email protected]. If this conversation triggers memories for those of you who have been licensed “forever,” or if you just have wisdom to share, don’t hesitate to jump in: [email protected].

Upper middle class teens have the highest rates of depression, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse of any group of teens in this country. Excessive pressure, a sense of disconnection from parents, and a belief that they are only as good as their last performance are some of the factors contributing to what both clinicians and researchers are calling an "epidemic" among America's privileged youth.   Participants will be able to discuss the unique problems faced by affluent adolescents. They will be more able to help parents bring up kids who are independent, connected and successful.

Madeline Levine, Ph.D., has been a practicing clinical psychologist in Marin County for the past twenty-five years. She is the author of The Price of Privilege, Viewing Violence and See No Evil: A Guide to Protecting Our Children from Media Violence.
