Background information:The Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development is thesubordinate office of the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation andFarmers Welfare, Government of India. It was established in theyear 1966 and became the nodal agency for the promotion anddevelopment of cashew in the country. Prior to post independenceera, till the end of 3rd Plan, no Central agency was there to devote anundivided attention towards the development of cashew in ourcountry. A first step towards the integration and coordination ofcashew development in association with the development agenciesof the State and research institutions was started by this Directoratefrom then. The area under cashew at the time of establishment ofDirectorate of Cashewnut Development (1966) was 2.40 lakh ha withthe annual production of 1.00 lakh MT. The productivity was as lowas 400 kg/ha. The efforts of the Directorate during the five decadesof the existence did help in increasing the area five fold (10.41 lakh/ha) and production by six fold (7.79 lakh MT). The productivity alsosubstantially increased to the level of 753 kg/ha by registering 4%annual growth.

About the cropCashew is one of the important commercial crop in the global market.India was earlier world’s largest supplier of quality cashew kernel,earning sizeable foreign exchange and now it ranks second in theworld trade with tough competition from Vietnam. Since, theindigenous production of rawnuts in India is 50 percent of thedomestic requirement, India depends also on imported rawnuts fromAsian and African countries to meet the demand. Indian cashewsector sustains employment for 1.50 million people in the cashewfarming, processing and marketing sector. Our country has got wideresources with regard to latest technical knowhow, adequatemanpower and congenial environment for cashew cultivation.
