Philoptochos Vasilopita Luncheon - January 7th

The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society’s annual Vasilopita Luncheon will be held at

the Banquet Centre on Sunday, January 7th at 12:00 noon. Everyone is welcome and

encouraged to attend our first gathering of the year as one Community family where

Father Alex will Bless and cut the Vasilopita. Tickets are $30 for Adults, $15 for

Children 7-12 years of age, and free for Children 6 years & under.

Το ετήσιο γεύμα για την κοπή της βασιλόπιτας θα πραγματοποιηθεί

την Κυριακή, 7 Ιανουαρίου στο Κοινοτικό μας Κέντρο, στις 12 μ.μ.

Είστε όλοι ευπρόσδεκτοι, σε αυτή την πρώτη, κοινή μας συνάντηση

για το νέο έτος, κατά την οποία ο πατήρ Αλέξανδρος θα ευλογήσει και

Ἀδελφοί, ἐνδυναμοῦσθε ἐν κυρίῳ, καὶ ἐν τῷ κράτει τῆς ἰσχύος αὐτοῦ. Ἐνδύσασθε τὴν πανοπλίαν

Χριστουγεννιάτικη Γιορτή Ελληνικού Σχολείου - Κοινοτική Γιορτή για όλα τα παιδιά

Σάββατο 16 Δεκεμβρίου

Η Χριστουγεννιάτικη Κοινοτική γιορτή του Ελληνικού Σχολείου και για όλα

τα παιδιά της Κοινότητας θα πραγματοποιηθεί στις 16 Δεκεμβρίου, στις 10 το πρωί

στο Κοινοτικό Κέντρο. Όλα τα παιδιά της Κοινότητας είναι ευπρόσδεκτα

για να καλωσορίσουν τον Αϊ-Βασίλη.

Χριστουγεννιάτικη Γιορτή - Κυριακή 17 Δεκεμβρίου, 12:00 μ.μ.

H χορωδία και το Κατηχητικό Σχολείο σας προσκαλούν σε μια εκδήλωση με

ύμνους, τραγούδια και μία θεατρική παράσταση με θέμα τα Χριστούγεννα. Το

πρόγραμμα θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Κυριακή, 17 Δεκεμβρίου, αμέσως μετά το

τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας στον Ιερό Ναό. Καφές και γλυκίσματα θα

προσφερθούν στο τέλος του προγράμματος.

Παραδοσιακά γλυκίσματα για τα Χριστούγεννα

Η Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης θα προετοιμάσει, όπως κάθε χρόνο, παραδοσιακά, χριστουγεννιάτικα

γλυκίσματα (μελομακάρονα, κουραμπιέδες κλπ) τα οποία θα πωλεί κατά τις Κυριακές 10 και

17 Δεκεμβρίου, αμέσως μετά το τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας, στο χωλ του Ιερού Ναού.

Θεραπαινίδες της Αθηνάς- Πώληση Χειροποίητων Χριστουγεννιάτικων Στολιδιων

Παρακαλούμε επισκεφτείτε το τραπέζι των Θεραπαινίδων της Αθηνάς στις 10 και 17

Δεκεμβρίου, στο χωλ της Εκκλησίας μετα το τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργιας. Θα πωλούνται

χειροποίητα Χριστουγεννιάτικα στολίδια. Τα έσοδα από τις πωλήσεις θα στηρίξουν τους σκοπούς

του συλλόγου τους. Σας ευχαριστούν εκ των προτέρων για την υποστήριξή σας.

Βοήθεια σε άπορες οικογένειες επ’ ευκαιρία των Εορτών

Εάν θέλετε να συνεισφέρετε στην προσπάθεια της Φιλοπτώχου να βοηθήσει

άπορες οικογένειες κατά την περίοδο των Εορτών, παρακαλείσθε να φέρετε

τρόφιμα, που διατηρούνται εκτός ψυγείου, πριν από τις 14 Δεκεμβρίου. Με την

δική σας βοήθεια θα δώσουμε χαρά σε πολλές οικογένειες και εφέτος τα

Epistle of St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians: 6:10-17

The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord.

Verse: O God, hear my cry.

Brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of

God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against

flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this pre-

sent darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the

whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Stand, therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteous-

ness, and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; besides all these, taking

the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And take the hel-

met of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The Gospel Reading: St. Luke: 13:10-17

At that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And there was a

woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully

straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, "Woman, you are freed

from your infirmity." And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and

she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath,

said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be

healed, and not on the sabbath day." Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of

you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And

ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from

this bond on the sabbath day?" As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the peo-

ple rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

Η παρουσία του Θεού στα σπίτια μας

Πολλές οικογένειες χρησιμοποιούν το βιβλίο "Η παρουσία του Θεού στο Ορθόδοξο,

Χριστιανικό σπίτι"* με σκοπό να μάθουν το πώς θα κατορθώσουν να νιώθουν το Θεό μέσα

στα σπίτια τους. Το σπίτι είναι ο πρώτος και ο σημαντικότερος ναός για τα παιδιά μας. Εάν

τα παιδιά δεν νιώθουν την παρουσία του Θεού μέσα στο ίδιο τους το σπίτι οι πιθανότητες

είναι να μην τη νιώσουν και πουθενά αλλού. Θα πρέπει να γίνεται κάθε δυνατή προσπάθεια

έτσι ώστε να είναι πάντα αισθητή η παρουσία του Θεού μέσα στα σπίτια μας. Μια απλή

άσκηση που αναφέρεται στο προαναφερόμενο βιβλίο μπορεί να βοηθήσει κάθε οικογένεια σε

αυτή την προσπάθειά της.

Πολλές φορές επαναπαυόμαστε στην ιδέα ότι η εκκλησία και Κατηχητικό θα

διδάξουν την έννοια του Θεού στα παιδιά μας. Οι γονείς θεωρούν ότι είναι δουλειά της

εκκλησίας και του σχολείου να διδάξουν στα παιδιά τα σχετικά με την πίστη και ότι οι ίδιοι

δεν φέρουν ουδεμία ευθύνη. Ξεχνούν ότι εκκλησία μπορεί να συμπληρώνει σε αυτό που

γίνεται στο σπίτι αλλά δεν μπορεί να αντικαταστήσει το σπίτι. Μία ώρα την εβδομάδα στην

εκκλησία δεν μπορεί να κάνει ό,τι κάνουν οι 168 ώρες της εβδομάδας στο σπίτι.

Παροτρύνουμε, λοιπόν, όλους τους γονείς να προσπαθούν, κατά τη διάρκεια της

εβδομάδας, να κάνουν έντονη την παρουσία του Θεού μέσα στο σπίτι τους με το να

προσεύχονται όλοι μαζί, να μιλούν για το Θεό και να διαβάζουν τους λόγους Του. Αυτός ο

τρόπος είναι ο δρόμος που θα οδηγήσει σε μια ενωμένη και ευτυχισμένη οικογένεια.

The Ladies of Philoptochos will be holding their annual Christmas Bake Sale of traditional

sweets in the Church Hall following the Liturgy on the Sundays of December 10th & 17th.

Maids of Athena Handmade Christmas Ornament Sale Please visit the Maids of Athena table in the Church Hall after Divine Liturgy on December

10th, and 17th where they will be selling handmade Christmas ornaments as a fundraiser for

their chapter. They thank you in advance for your support.

Christmas Baskets

The Ladies of Philoptochos are organizing their annual ‘Christmas

Basket’ program for needy families in the Ottawa area. If you are able to contribute, please

bring non-perishable food items to the church by December 15th. With your assistance,

we can cheer up the homes of many families again this Christmas. Drivers are also needed to

deliver the baskets on Saturday, December 16th. If you can volunteer, please contact Argiro

The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society is holding its Christmas dinner at Hometown

God In The Home

Many families are now using the book ‘Making God Real in the Orthodox

Christian Home’* in order to practice the presence of God in their homes. The home is the

first and the most important church for our children. If they do not feel the presence of

God at home, chances are that they will not feel it anywhere else. We must make a deliber-

ate and concerted effort to create a sense of the presence of God at home. The simple

exercises explained in the above book will help each family to enjoy the presence of God

through the week.

Often we mistakenly rely on the Church and the Sunday School to create and foster

the presence of God in the lives of our children. Parents feel that the Church School will

take care of their child’s religious faith and that they are thus freed from this responsibility.

We forget that the Church can only supplement what is done in the home. It can never take

the place of the home. One hour a week in church cannot do what 168 hours a week can

do at home.

So, we urge all parents to make a deliberate effort to practice with their children

the presence of God at home all week long: to pray together, to talk about God together, to

read together from God’s word, to practice the many family activities suggested in

‘Making God Real…’. It will pay the greatest possible dividends in terms of family unity

and lasting happiness.

The students of the Hellenic School will present their annual Christmas program

Celebration of Christmas - Sunday, December 17th at Noon Everyone is invited to join our Church Choir & Sunday School to

celebrate the upcoming joyous birth of Jesus with hymns, songs

and a play of the Nativity immediately following the Liturgy.

A reception is being offered by the Community in the Church Hall

after the celebration.
