Four-circle automatic X-ray diffrac-tometer uses a tangentially mounted detector to increase reciprocal space sampling. The KUMA KM-4 has positioning accuracy to 0.00125° for ω and 2Θ and 0.0025° for κ and φ, and contains easily removable collimators and slits. Automatic peak-hunting and cell reduction algorithms are included in the PC-controlled system. Advanced Diffraction Systems 412
Standards. Database on CD-ROM contains all standards published by the American National S tandards Insti tute, as well as international standards information that includes U.S., ISO, and IEC standards. Texts are searched by keywords, and an index/cross reference feature allows the user to access related standards information. Updates are available every 60 days. P r o c e s s c h e m i s t r y . BatchCAD batch reaction simulation software models laboratory processes for optimization of production scaleup, hazardous operations, and accelerated process design. The software runs on a PC with a 286 or higher processor, a math coprocessor, and 1 MB RAM. Its menu-driven interface allows the user to predict batch reaction composition for up to 26 species and 20 concurrent reactions, with options for degree of polymerization and isothermal or adiabatic operation. Reactor design with vessel specifications from a user-defined library can be optimized through thermal safety, pressure, and quench calculations, and distillation dynamics and calori-metric processes can be simulated. HPLC. "Troubleshooting HPLC" is an interactive computer-based training program with animated color graphics. Topics include baseline, peak shape, and retention problems; ghost and negative peaks; plugs and leaks; instrument cleaning, preventive maintenance, and repair; and performance tests. Program runs on
a PC with a 286 or higher processor, 1 MB RAM, 2 MB free space on hard disk, Windows 3.0 or higher, and a mouse. Phenomenex 415
Regulatory compliance. Audit-PC Version 1.52 software for hazard analys is s tudies conta ins an enhanced range of regulatory checklists that can be used as is or customized for safety compliance audits and reviews. Included are OSHA guidelines for Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals and emergency response regulat ions, New Jersey and Delaware hazardous materials regulations, API Recommended Practice 750, and CMA Responsible Care code of m a n a g e m e n t p r a c t i c e s . Menu-driven software contains onscreen tutorials and questions, and users can enter their own criteria and import files directly into the program's library. PrimaTech 416
Manufacturers' Literature F o r e n s i c chemis t ry . Newslet ter "Forensic Forum: Updates on PCR in Casework and Research" presents results of a panel discussion on the use of the AmpliType PolyMarker DNA Typing System, along with articles on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) DNA amplification for forensic use, the effect of reaction conditions on preferential amplification, population genetics, and forensic validation.
