For those of us who are introverts, showing up for these gatherings is no small feat. Getting through one’s awkwardness and trying something with a new group of people in an unfamiliar setting is a real challenge. And while some of us in our field are extroverts, I’m betting that there are more who are not. Why, I wonder, do we put ourselves through this?

The answer that I have come up with is this: It takes a while to make these connections and to become comfortable. What starts as participating out of a sense of professional responsibility becomes an experience of knowing one’s colleagues and enjoying their company. We have in our midst individuals who are unconventional and warm, creative and fun, brilliant and engaging and open--and very different from one another. It’s so cool to discover that essence of someone we didn’t know. But that can’t happen unless we show up and stay open to the experience.

So your next opportunity to catch someone’s essence or maybe just their Frisbee will be at the Schulz Museum for our Play Day in the Sun on July 11th. Bring your partner, your kids, your grandkids, your favorite dish to share. We'll have a tour of the museum and then have a potluck outside and play some games or just hang out in the shade. Be brave. Step out. Come play.

After our summer fun we’ll be turning back to business in September with Continuing Education at Osake’s on Wednesday evenings. The new word from Osake is that after 10 members sign up for the dinner, those who wish to attend without having dinner can come for a $10 cover charge, unless they want the CEU credits, which is an additional $27.

Presidents Column

by Jules Dantin, Ph.D.

In our last newsletter I whined about giving up my weekend time to attend the CPA convention. Since then I have attended two more professional weekend events: the supervision seminar that Melissa Staehle and Tony Madrid presented and the Northern California Psychology Chapters’ BBQ in Berkeley. To be honest, I’m a little chagrined to find that I feel more connected to my peers and, yes, even more nurtured.

REPORT FROM YOUR CPA CHAPTER REPRESENTATIVE AND GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS CHAIR - MICHAEL PINKSTON

Like many other organizations, CPA is under financial strain in the current economic climate due to former members electing not to pay their dues. In order to deal with the loss of income we held our most recent Board Meeting by conference call in early June when it would normally have been a 2-day meeting in Los Angeles. The current plan is for the Fall Board Meeting to be restricted to 1 day and if necessary to replace it with a conference call. Financial concerns have also led CPA to putting most of our advocacy attention on stopping the Governor from terminating the Board of Psychology. Due to the hard work of our CPA staff and the letters that many of you have sent, the recent news quoted below from the CPA office regarding a hearing on 6/15 is very promising but still not finished.

“CPA is happy to report that we have a significant victory on the proposal earlier this week. The proposal was referred from the Budget Conference Committee to the Senate Business and Professions Committee since it was deemed to be non-fiscal and more appropriately decided by the policy committee. On Monday, the Senate Business and Professions Committee voted 7-2 to REJECT the Governor's proposal to consolidate the BOP with the BBS and Psych Techs. All affected professions testified against the proposal, with Dr. Jackie Horn, former President of the California Board of Psychology, providing testimony on behalf of CPA. All Democrats on the committee voted against the proposal (except for Orange County Senator Lou Correa who vote to merge on EVERY proposal). Republican Senator Mark Wyland voted against the merger proposal, while Senator Mimi Walters voted for the proposal. Psychologist-Legislator Senator Yee offered very helpful comments about the differences between the professions and urged legislators to vote against the measure. Next Steps: The Committee recommendation will be passed on to the Budget Conference committee, who may or may not hear the issue again as part of the budget package. The Committee would like to see all future proposals as legislation, and not budget actions. We are closely monitoring this issue, as we might see again in the budget in 2009, or as legislation later in the year. “

If you are not a current member of CPA, I hope you will consider becoming a current member or if you prefer you may go to our website and make a donation to support our efforts to advocate for the profession of psychology on the state level.

Regarding federal legislation, the following news from APA regarding Medicare is very good news for those of us who take Medicare.

“On Friday, three key House committees, the Ways and Means, Energy and Commerce, and Education and Labor Committees, released their joint draft of health care reform legislation, which includes Medicare provisions. I am pleased to inform you that the committees have included psychology’s top Medicare priority – a two-year extension of the 5% psychology payment restoration previously passed as part of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) in 2008.”

GIVE AN HOUR submitted by Bill McCausland, Ph.D I recently had the good fortune to meet the inspired Barbara Van Dalen Romberg, Ph.D. who is the founder of Give an Hour.  The organization connects  mental health therapists in the community who are willing to donate an hour to provide treatment with the returnees of war and possibly their families.  She was selected by the American Psychological Foundation of the APA to present the prestigious Rosalee G. Weiss 2009 lecture.  Give an Hour was also recently awarded the 2009 Distinguished Service Award by the American Psychiatric Association. The psychotherapy service is for veterans and military personnel who might not otherwise seek treatment because of real or perceived access barriers with the VA, other veteran treatment programs or the military.  Additionally, sometimes veterans have trust barriers in seeking help from governmental agencies.  I am completely antiwar, but can tell you with certainty that extending compassion and help to individuals returning from war can be an extremely fulfilling experience. Being deployed to a war zone is very difficult. The readjustment of coming home can be even worse.  I am a Vietnam veteran and wish that a program like Give an Hour had existed when my fellow veterans and I returned from war. The following is the description that was sent to me by Give an Hour for inclusion in the RPA newsletter:          Give an Hour is a national network of mental health professionals providing free mental health services to military members, veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, and their families who are suffering the psychological effects of war.   In addition to direct face-to-face counseling and phone support, Give an Hour volunteers have the opportunity to educate the public by providing support and training to community organizations, schools and churches, and other veterans' service organizations. By providing services that are separate from the military establishment, Give an Hour offers an essential option for men and women who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate services.  What's more, Give an Hour's services are available to anyone affected by a loved one's service in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Parents, siblings, significant others, etc. are often adversely affected but are not typically entitled to military or veterans' health benefits. Give an Hour has formal relationships with many major mental health associations, including:  American Psychological Association, American Psychiatric Association, National Association of Social Workers, American Association of Pastoral Counselors, American Association of Marriage & Family Therapists and the Anxiety Disorders Association of America. To register as a provider, or for more information, please visit www.giveanhour.org or contact [email protected]

DO YOU KNOW THE MOTHER OF AN ASTHMATIC CHILD? We are looking for mothers to participate in a study that is investigating what happens to an asthmatic child when bonding is improved. All the work is done with the mother, and she will be paid for her participation. For more information about this research, you can check out www.asthma-busters.org or contact Tony Madrid at 865-1200 or [email protected].

CHILDHOOD ASTHMA STUDYRussian River Counselors is accepting asthmatic children for a study evaluating the effectiveness of a new, psychological treatment. This study is being sponsored by the Association of Pre and Perinatal Psychology and Health.

This is the sixth in a series of studies. Previous studies have established that many asthmatic children have disruptions in bonding and that therapy that repairs the bond seems to have positive effects on a child’s asthma.

If interested, one can view more about this at: www.asthma-busters.org.

Referrals can be made by contacting Tony Madrid, Ph.D., at [email protected] or 865-1200.
