Reactions 705 - 13 Jun 1998 S Interferon-α Acute renal failure in a patient with nephrotic syndrome: case report A 38-year-old man with nephrotic syndrome secondary to hepatitis B-induced glomerulopathy developed acute renal failure after treatment with interferon-α for his nephrotic syndrome. After receiving 5 doses of SC interferon-α (3MU three times weekly), the man’s serum creatinine level, previously normal, had increased to 213 µmol/L and his urea level was 11.2 mmol/L. He was also experiencing fatigue, dizziness and nausea. Interferon-α therapy was stopped and the man was hospitalised. After 5 days, his serum creatinine level had increased to 1183 µmol/L and his urea level was 37 mmol/L. A diagnosis of acute renal failure secondary to interferon-α was made. The man was treated with bed rest, salt and fluid restriction, furosemide and renal doses of dopamine. Within 3 weeks, his renal function was normal, and remained normal at follow-up 1 month later.
