Το νέο Δ.Σ. του Ομίλου Γκολφ Γλυφάδας Αθηνών

Αγαπητοί μου αναγνώστες,

Ένα νέο Δ.Σ. σε έναν οργανισμό, ή σε μια εταιρία, ή σε έναν αθλητικό όμιλο και συγκεκριμένα στον Όμιλο Γκολφ Γλυφάδας Αθηνών είναι ένα σημαντικό γεγονός, μια νέα αρχή, μια προσδοκία για καλύτερες μέρες, για ανάπτυξη, για ανάδειξη του αθλήματος και των αθλητών. Των αθλητών που αριστεύουν στον αγωνιστικό χώρο και που τιμούν το άθλημα με τις επιδόσεις και το ήθος τους.

Σε άλλη σελίδα παραθέτουμε τους παίκτες που αποτελούν το νέο Δ.Σ. και που με μεγάλη χαρά διαπιστώνουμε ότι όλοι είναι νέοι και μάχιμοι παίκτες, και όχι μόνο παίκτες (αυτό που οι Άγγλοι συγκαταβατικά αποκαλούν club golfers), αλλά και αθλητές. Κι αυτό είναι, νομίζω, πολύ ενθαρρυντικό. Γιατί ίσως δεν θα αρκεστούν στο να «παίρνουν» μόνο από το γκολφ (απόλαυση, κοινωνική καταξίωση) αλλά και να «προσφέρουν» στο γκολφ (προσέλκυση νέων παικτών με εξωστρεφή δραστηριοποίηση). Για να μην «πεθάνει» το γκολφ στην Ελλάδα πρέπει να έχει οξυγόνο (νέους παίκτες, περισσότερους παίκτες, καλύτερους αθλητές).

Στην προσπάθειά μου να συμβάλω στην προώθηση του γκολφ, παραπονέθηκα κάποτε σε έναν υπουργό γιατί η κυβέρνηση δεν βοηθούσε καθόλου το άθλημα και βέβαια ο άνθρωπος, δίκαια, μου απάντησε: «Μα είναι δυνατόν να επενδύουμε σε ένα άθλημα που δεν έχει ούτε χίλιους παίκτες, αν τουλάχιστον μπορούσατε να βγάλετε έστω και έναν αθλητή να διακριθεί στο εξωτερικό, ίσως να το συζητούσαμε». Σωστό.

Παραπονέθηκα και σ’ έναν από τους προπονητές μας γιατί δεν καταφέρνουν να βγάλουν, όπως σε άλλες χώρες, έστω και έναν αθλητή που να διακριθεί σε διεθνείς αγώνες και μου απάντησε: «Μα σε άλλες χώρες υπάρχουν χίλιοι νέοι παίκτες και μέσα απ’ αυτούς βγαίνουν και κάποια ταλέντα. Εμείς εδώ δεν έχουμε ούτε τριάντα. Έτσι οι πιθανότητες είναι πολύ μικρές». Σωστό κι αυτό.

Με την έκδοση του περιοδικού, προσπάθησα να προβάλω το άθλημα βέβαια, αλλά ήμουν πολύ αισιόδοξη. Δεν κατάφερα και πολλά πράγματα. Δεν φτάνει, ασφαλώς, ένας άνθρωπος για να φέρει ένα νέο άθλημα σε μια χώρα. Πάντως έχω τη συνείδησή μου ήσυχη πως έκανα ότι μπορούσα. Άραγε, κάποιοι άλλοι, πιο αρμόδιοι μάλιστα από μένα, μπορούν να πουν το ίδιο;

T o celebrate the best of America ’s most prestigious golf championship, the United States Golf Association (USGA)

has announced the release of its new book, “Great Moments of the U.S. Open.”

Written by Robert Williams, direct or of the USGA Museum , and Michael Trostel, the Museum’s senior curator and historian, the book celebrates the accomplishments of U.S. Open champions, shares their inspirational stories and chronicles the extraordinary circumstances that each faced.

Rand Jerris, senior managing direct or of public services for the USGA, served as supervising editor, and among the contributors are Mike Davis, executive direct or of the USGA, and John Mummert, manager of creative services and senior staff photographer for the USGA. Complete with a foreword by four-time U.S. Open champion Jack Nicklaus, “Great Moments of the U.S. Open” draws together heroes, past and present, who persevered under the most demanding conditions to become America’s national champions.

Release of the book coincides with the 100th anniversary of amateur Francis Ouimet’s shocking victory over top British professionals at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., and the return of the U.S. Open in June to Merion Golf Club, site of Ben Hogan’s 1950 comeback from a near fatal car accident.

From Horace Rawlins’ improbable victory in the inaugural U.S. Open in 1895, to Nicklaus’ narrow defeat of Arnold Palmer in 1962 for his first professional win, to Tiger Woods’ breathtaking triumph on a broken leg to capture the 2008 U.S. Open, “Great Moments of the U.S. Open” uses the USGA Museum’s collection of stunning archival images and artifacts to bring to life some of the most memorable U.S. Open victories.

New book celebrates History of the U.S. Open

A ccording to evidence presented at the European Parliament in May, the death rate for golfers is up to 40% lower than for non-golfers of the same sex,

age and socioeconomic status, with golfers showing up to a five year increase in life expectancy. (Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science).

Εμείς το γνωρίζαμε «εμπειρικά», «από πρώτο χέρι» με πολλά παραδείγματα από το γκολφ στην Ελλάδα, αλλά τώρα μας το επιβεβαιώνει και επίσημη μελέτη που παρου-σιάστηκε στο Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοβούλιο πρόσφατα, όπως διαβάσαμε και στο δελτίο της Golf Business News.

Είναι βέβαια ένα φυσικό επακόλουθο, γιατί οι παίκτες του γκολφ, εκτός από την άσκηση και κυρίως με το περπάτημα μέσα σ’ ένα καταπράσινο περιβάλλον για τουλάχιστον τέσ-σερις ώρες, αφενός μεν ζουν αναγκαστικά μια μετρημένη και υγιεινή ζωή, γιατί πώς να κάνεις «κραιπάλες» το βράδυ όταν την άλλη μέρα το πρωί ή έστω το μεσημέρι θα περ-πατήσεις τόσες ώρες και πρέπει να είσαι και σε φόρμα για να σκοράρεις, αφετέρου δε, συνηθίζουν να διατηρούν μια στάση μετριοπαθή, ψύχραιμη, φλεγματική – θα λέγαμε – και στην ζωή τους κι αυτό επηρεάζει ευεργετικά το χαρα-κτήρα τους και την υγεία τους, και βέβαια έτσι επιμηκύνε-ται και η ζωή τους.

Δύο χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα από τα πολλά που θα μπορούσαμε να αναφέρουμε είναι ο Βύρων Βαλσαμίδης και ο Νότης Χατζηγιαννάκης, που και οι δύο έφθασαν σε βαθύ γήρας παίζοντας γκολφ.

Νότης ΧατζηγιαννάκηςΓεννήθηκε στη Μυτιλήνη το 1920, αλλά έζησε στο εξωτε-

ρικό την περίοδο του μεσοπολέμου. Ήταν ένας επιτυχημέ-νος αυτοδημιούργητος επιχειρηματίας. Λάτρης των σπορ, ξεκινώντας στα νιάτα του από το ποδόσφαιρο και το τένις, κατέληξε στο γκολφ. Έπαιζε γκολφ και όταν γύρισε στην Ελ-λάδα, αρχικά στο πρώτο γήπεδο της Βαρυμπόπης και μετά στο γήπεδο της Γλυφάδας, όπου έπαιζε σχεδόν καθημερι-

νά, ως το τέλος της ζωής του.Από τα ιδρυτικά μέλη του Ομίλου Γκολφ Γλυφάδας Αθη-

νών, ήταν μια χαρακτηριστική παρουσία στο γήπεδο, όπου περνούσε σχεδόν όλη την ημέρα.

Το γκολφ ήταν η «φιλοσοφία της ζωής του». Συμμετείχε σε διεθνείς αποστολές, σαν μέλος του Αττικού Ομίλου Seniors και έδινε το «παρών» σε όλους τους αγώνες του ομίλου.

Βύρων ΒαλσαμίδηςΕμβληματική μορφή στο γήπεδο της Γλυφάδας για τέσ-

σερις δεκαετίες, με το προσωνύμιο «πρύτανης του γκολφ» να τον συνοδεύει, υπήρξε πρωτοπόρος στα δρώμενα του σπορ την περίοδο που αυτό βρισκόταν στα σπάργανα. Απο-λάμβανε καθολικής αναγνώρισης ως ο παράγων που καθι-έρωσε τους κανόνες και την γνωστή ετικέτα στο γκολφ της Γλυφάδας, στα πρώτα χρόνια της λειτουργίας του γηπέδου στη δεκαετία του ’60.

ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΕΙΑ-ΧΑΡΤΟΥΜ…Ο Βύρων Βαλσαμίδης γεννήθηκε το 1918 στην Αλεξάν-

δρεια της Αιγύπτου, εκ «πατρός εμπόρου εκ Σμύρνης», όπως έγραφε το απολυτήριο (με άριστα) του Ελληνικού σχολείου της Αλεξάνδρειας.

Σπούδασε στην Ανωτάτη Εμπορική του Καΐρου, στα χρό-νια του πολέμου κατετάγη εθελοντής στην Ελληνική Αερο-πορία, υπηρέτησε στη θρυλική Μοίρα 335, ενώ τα πρώτα χρόνια της επαγγελματικής σταδιοδρομίας του εργάστηκε για την Αγγλική κυβέρνηση στην υπηρεσία Δημοσίων Έργων της Κυρηναϊκής. Αργότερα υπηρέτησε στο Χαρτούμ του Σουδάν. Εκεί άκουσε περί γκολφ, ρώτησε τους Άγγλους συ-ναδέλφους, έμαθε τι είναι και στο πίσω μέρος του μυαλού του το «αποθήκευσε». Μέχρι τότε είχε ασχοληθεί με πολλά σπορ, διακρίθηκε στον στίβο (άλμα επί κοντώ, εις μήκος), στην κωπηλασία είχε κατακτήσει μετάλλια (στην δίκωπο μετά πηδαλιούχου), ενώ πριν το γκολφ έπαιζε τένις, σε επί-πεδο συναγωνισμού.

Εκεί, όμως, οι συχνές θλάσεις τον οδήγησαν στο στρατι-ωτικό νοσοκομείο της πρωτεύουσας του Σουδάν και οι Άγ-γλοι γιατροί του συνέστησαν να μεταπηδήσει από το τένις στο γκολφ για πιο ήπια καταπόνηση.

St. ANDREWS…Καθώς ήταν μεθοδικός, έψαξε, διάβασε τα πάντα για το

γκολφ και αποφάσισε να γνωρίσει το άθλημα στην πηγή του: στο St Andrews. Πήρε άδεια έξι μηνών από την υπηρε-σία του και πήγε στο St Andrews, όπου επί έξι μήνες έπαιρ-νε καθημερινά μαθήματα από τον ανεψιό του Tom Morris. Έκτοτε, η προδιάθεση για αυστηρότητα, δικαιοσύνη, τυπι-κότητα, αβρότητα και εθιμοτυπία, ισχυροποίησε τον χαρα-κτήρα του και «ερωτεύτηκε» το γκολφ, μετατρέποντάς το σε προέκταση του εαυτού του.

ΓΛΥΦΑΔΑ…Με την έλευση στην Ελλάδα εργάστηκε ως εμπορικός δι-

ευθυντής στην πρεσβεία της Νοτίου Αφρικής. Στα μέσα του ‘60, ξεκίνησε επαφές με το υπό κατασκευή γήπεδο Γλυφά-δας, στις πρώτες 9 τρύπες. «Όπως μου διηγείτο για εκείνη την περίοδο, καθημερινά, πριν πάει στην πρεσβεία, κατέ-

βαινε στο γκολφ και επέβλεπε τα φορτηγά που άδειαζαν χώμα για την κατασκευή του γηπέδου», θυμάται ο κ. Γιώρ-γος Αρώνης, green keeper του γηπέδου για πολλά χρόνια, με τον οποίο ο Βύρων Βαλσαμίδης συνεργάστηκε επί μακρόν. Ως ιδρυτικό μέλος του Ομίλου Γκολφ Γλυφάδας Αθηνών και μέλος του ΔΣ για 15 χρόνια προσέφερε με τις γνώσεις του τόσο για το γήπεδο όσο και για το ίδιο το άθλημα. Είχε ανα-λάβει και την επίβλεψη της τοποθέτησης του συστήματος υπόγειας άρδευσης. Ο εκλιπών ήταν νικητής των πρώτων πρωταθλημάτων του ΟΓΓΑ, και από τα πρώτα χρόνια αδι-απραγμάτευτα καθημερινός παίκτης στη Γλυφάδα μέχρι το 1995. Σιωπηλός και ανέκφραστος καθ’ όλο το παιχνίδι, ολιγομίλητος και μετά στο clubhouse, ευγενής, αυστηρός και δίκαιος είναι οι χαρακτηρισμοί που έδιναν όλοι όσοι τον γνώριζαν. Τυπικός σε ό,τι αναφέρει το «ευαγγέλιο», το book rules, ήταν αυτός στον οποίο κατέφευγαν όλοι οι παί-κτες για διευκρίνιση σε απορίες, διαφωνίες ή απρόσμενη…συμπεριφορά της μπάλας.

Μετά το 1995 οι επισκέψεις του αραίωσαν, πήγαινε σπο-ραδικά μέχρι το 2001 για να χτυπήσει λίγες μπάλες, ενώ τε-λευταία φορά που παρέστη σε απονομή επάθλων ήταν το 2003, απονέμοντας το έπαθλο «Βύρων Βαλσαμίδης» στον Junior player εκείνης της χρονιάς.

(re)Golf completes Crete course

International golf design company, (re)Golf has completed the construction of a private six-green golf course, carved

from a compact, severe site in Crete, Greece. The course was designed in collaboration with the client by partner architects Christian Lundin and Jeff Lynch, and offers a number of hole options and routings. Artificial turf was used for the majority of

the playing areas, allowing the client to accommodate Crete’s climate and water-use restrictions, as well as ensuring easy long-term maintenance. (re)Golf used native plants to transform natural areas into golf hazards and also to soften the edges of the turf.

“We wanted to maximise the interest and options within a very limiting piece of property,” said Lynch. “When our client has more favourite holes than greens, it’s a pretty good sign that we’ve accomplished what we set out to do.”

(Oistein Bjorndal from Norway is the name of the man who recently built his own private golf club just outside Rethymnon on the Greek island of Crete. The course is a 6-hole short game course or the term that has been used within the golfing public for years - “Pitch and Putt”.

Holes are streching from 35m up to 60m and includes bunkers, water features, waste areas and planted areas. To ensure a low maintenance but still high end playing qualities the course was built using the latest technology within artificial grass.

Greens, Fairways, Roughs and Tees all are in a synthetic material which has been tested to ensure the highest golf playability. When playing the course golfers can choose to follow the ordinary routing taking them from hole 1 all the way to the finishing hole 6. But they could also choose then traffic is low on the course to find new holes to play into and by doing that create their own match on the property. There are plenty of holes left out there still to be found.

Six years ago Mr. Bjorndal decided to build a house on this property given the circumstances a golf course would be built on a neighbouring piece of land. When that project was put on hold and later cancelled Oisten decided to make contact with Unisport Scandinavia to see how they could assist in helping him creating a golf course on his land. Through Unisport’s network they made contact with swedish golf course architect Christian Lundin, who is partner of (re)GOLF one of Europe’s leading design offices within golf course design. Christian who is a Associate Member of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects later come to design this gem of a course.

To construct this course to the highest of standards Christian brought in an old friend

of his as a shaper to create all features of the golf course. Marcus Terry is not only a friend of Christians he is also one of the best shapers in Europe. Before coming into this project Marcus was working on Carnoustie to finish off some of the new work on the Barren course.

In addition to the golf course Unisport also installed a tennis court in artificial grass. Next to the tennis and the golf course Oisteins house is located. The house includes 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a large kitchen and dining area as well as a large living room. Outside the kitchen and livingroom area an outdoor terrace is located. A few steps away from this you will find a swimming pool. During times when Oistein is not using his house he has it available to rent.

Oistein Bjorndal created one of Scandinavias most trendiest schools for hairdressers. Today this company have approximately 250 employees, running schools as well as 22 hairsaloons. The company is called «Adam og Eva». Considering Oisteins background it was quite an easy decision to name the house to VILLA BARBERA.

Bjorndal also have many thoughts

regarding where the game of golf find itself today. He wants to make golf available to more people and also ensure that it should not be expensive or difficult to start playing golf. He feels that he want to do this to make more people see this game as he see is the «best game ever found».

Short public courses, such as this, where golfers can use one club and a putter and the round only takes 20minutes is ideal if we want to grow the game. Many people would say that the level of difficulty this game has is pushing people away. But Oistein strongly believe that if people can learn golf on facilities like this the quality of play will increase for every round and after a while they will all be of such quality so that they can move on to bigger things.

«Golf needs to think in new ways, as many other sports does today» says Oistein. He would also take this chance to thank the people of Greece for their hospitality and honesty. He is also happy to see that the level of criminality is almost down to nothing in Crete. «I’m very pleased to be a part if the Creatian society and hope that this project will give something back not only to tourist but also to the people of Crete.»

It took Adam Scott less than a year to earn redemption. After a disappointing finish at last year’s Open Championship

that promised to haunt his entire career, Scott buried a birdie on hole No. 10 to knock off Angel Cabrera in a nail-biting two-hole playoff to win the Masters, becoming the first ever Australian to do so.

Cabrera—who entered Sunday tied for first with Brandt Snedeker—had a comfortable two-shot lead after nine, but as we’ve come to expect, the back nine at Augusta on Sunday is the epitome of unpredictable.

And unpredictable is exactly what we got.

The 43-year-old two-time major champion bogeyed No. 10 and went into the water at No. 13, dropping two strokes to seven under and opening things up for

the trailing field. It appeared Jason Day was going to

be the one to take advantage when he dropped in three straight birdies to push him to nine under, but he missed a fairly simple par putt on No. 16 and bogeyed No. 17 to drop him to seven under.

Meanwhile, Scott birdied 13 and 15, and Cabrera came back with the same on 16, pushing the duo into a two-way tie at eight under with two holes remaining.

Day barely missed a birdie putt on 18 to finish in third place at seven-under, and when Scott buried a dramatic 25-footer to move to nine-under just moments later, it appeared he was in line for the win.

But El Pato stuck his approach five feet away from the hole and calmly knocked in his putt for a birdie to force a playoff.

After nearly identical tee shots on No. 18, each player’s second shot was sent

right in front of the green, mere yards away from each other.

Cabrera almost holed his chip, but he settled for a one-foot par putt. Scott also left his chip just short, but also knocked in his putt for par, sending the duo to hole No. 10.

Seemingly unfazed by the daunting pressure, both proceeded with gorgeous drives and fantastic approaches to leave two makeable birdie putts. Cabrera’s missed by inches, and Scott followed up with a dagger from about 20 feet to win the tournament in chill-inducing fashion.

Snedeker, Marc Leishman and Tiger Woods finished at five under to tie for fourth, while Denmark ‘s Thorbjorn Olesen rocketed to seventh after his second marvelous 68 in a row.

June 4, 2013 (Shanghai) - China Golf Association (CGA) and HSBC announced the re-signing of the collaborative CGA-HSBC Junior Golf Program for another 3 years. The program is designed to

support the grassroots development of golf in China through a series of events, tournaments, training and campus programs targeted at junior golfers.

The announcement was made today at a press conference held at the Shangri-la Hotel in Shanghai. The ceremony was official when featuring a golf ball being putted across center stage and into the hole, instantaneously lighting up the CGA-HSBC Junior Golf Program’s partnership logo. Present at the event were Mr. Li Dazheng, Deputy Director of Multi Ball Games Administrative Center of General Administration of Sport of China, Vice President of China Golf Association; Ms. Helen Wong, Deputy Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Bank (China) Company Limited (HSBC China); Mr. Will Wei ,Head of Golf, IMG China ; and Ms. Lu Yuwen, a junior golf player representative.

: The CGA-HSBC China Junior Golf Program is the only official junior golf development program sanctioned by CGA. It is designed as a sustainable plan to promote the long-term development of junior golf in China through its forward-thinking concepts and systematic introduction of tournaments, training and promotions. Since its inception in 2007, the program has served as a platform of growth for budding junior golf talents. It has enabled golf enthusiasts to immerse in the game more fully, raised the standards of golf, as well as popularized the sport across the country. More and more potential golf stars have been uncovered in the last 6 years and are now stepping up to the international golf circuit, gaining national and worldwide attention.

“The long-term career objective of our collaboration with HSBC is to nurture a team of young golfers into professional golf athletes, so as to represent China in the Olympics. who was recently the youngest ever to participate in The Masters; Ye Wocheng, the youngest to take part in the European Open; Liu Yu, who recently won her second professional championship; Feng Shanshan, the first female golfer to claim the Chinese National Championship; as well as Shi Yuting, a member of the National Junior team. These athletes each conveyed their well wishes for the signing ceremony via video greetings.

Guan Tianlang said: “Since the start of CGA-HSBC Junior Golf Program in 2007, I have participated in many tournaments and have had the honor and privilege of playing a hole with Tiger Woods at the 2010 WGC-HSBC Champions Pro-Am tournament. I love golf, and I hope that more people my age can participate and find passion in this wonderful game! Here I wish for all the junior golfers to keep striving hard in sharpening their skills and achieving success. Good luck!”

The R&A is the world governing body of golf and organizer of tournaments worldwide, including The Open Championship at St. Andrews, Scotland. Dominic Wall, Director of The R&A, Asia Pacific, said: "The R&A is delighted to continue its support of the CGA-HSBC Junior Golf Program. The Program plays an important role in both introducing golf to Chinese children and then helping them develop into golfers. The 3-year renewal agreement reflects HSBC’s consistent dedication to the strategic development of golf in China. International golf sponsor HSBC has hailed Guan Tianlang’s historic Masters performance as the fulfilment of almost a decade of investment in Chinese golf.

The 14-year-old prodigy became the youngest ever golfer to make the cut at a major at Augusta and HSBC believe his trailblazing achievement will clear the way for a new wave of Chinese golfing talent.

The teenager from Guangzhou is a graduate of HSBC’s Junior Golf Programme and HSBC Global Head of Sponsorship and Events Giles Morgan said: “Guan’s incredible performance has not so much opened the door for other Chinese golfers to follow as kicked it off its hinges – this is what we have been working towards for the best part of a decade. “The reason we launched the HSBC Junior Golf Programme was to establish a sustainable long-term structure and framework to develop the future of Chinese golf and we’re incredibly proud of Guan’s achievement at Augusta. It feels like a major turning point for Chinese golf.

“Guan has been involved in HSBC Junior Golf tournaments right from their inception in 2007 and is the biggest success story so far but he is by no means alone. Last year we saw two of our other graduates make a mark on the world stage when 14-year-old Andy Zhang became the youngest player ever to qualify for a major at the US Open and 16-year-old amateur Jing Yan became the youngest Chinese female golfer to ever play in a major tournament when she appeared at the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Liverpool.

Sergio Garcia rues his comments about Tiger Woods. Since golf fans watched a youthful Sergio Garcia

close his eyes and attempt the go-for-broke shot from behind the tree at No. 16 in the final round at Medinah Country Club in the 1999 PGA Championship, he has been a media darling.

His jubilant hop-skip-and-jump across the fairway to watch his golf ball slicing onto the green grabbed golfers across the world and everyone became immediate fans of the exuberant 19-year-old Spaniard.

Even through the difficulties of watching an uncertain Garcia grip and re-grip his club while unsympathetic New York golf fans audibly counted out his twitches at Bethpage Black in the 2002 U.S. Open, the rest of the world still gave him the benefit of the doubt.

The golf kingdom, especially European golf fans, felt the deep despair of his failure to make that eight-foot putt for the win on the last hole in the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie. Totally deflated, he went on to lose the four-hole aggregate playoff to Padraig Harrington.

Garcia revels in the team atmosphere of the Ryder Cup matches. He never fails to excel for the European team. Even though he was not a playing member

of the 2010 team that defeated the USA at Celtic Manor, European team captain Colin Montgomerie asked Garcia to be an assistant captain for his enthusiasm and spirit.

Sergio Garcia has felt the highs and the lows of professional golf. He wears his feelings prominently for the entire world to see, warts and all. His recent dust up with Tiger Woods at the Players Championship while the two were paired together is just another in the continuing saga that surrounds him. Garcia may have tainted his image forever with his latest comments, however. While on stage in an a black tie affair at Wentworth Club preceding the BMW PGA Championship, he was asked if he would be inviting Tiger Woods to dinner during the U.S. Open at Merion.

Golf Channel reported that he replied, “We will have him around every night.”

The assembled crowd was amused at this comment and laughed.

But then Garcia added the following quip: “We will serve fried chicken.”

This blatant racist remark harkened back to remarks that Fuzzy Zoeller made after Tiger Woods won the 1997 Masters.

When asked if he had any comments on Woods winning the Masters, Zoeller replied, “Tell him to enjoy it and not serve fried chicken at next year’s champions dinner.” Golfers are competitors. They are trying to beat each other every time they tee it up. Golf likes to see itself as a “gentlemen’s game,” but it is still a very serious sporting battle among serious combatants. Woods is the ultimate competitor. He has to have a heart like Secretariat to continue to win golf tournaments on aging knees after surviving the personal problems he has faced. Golfers do not need to like each other. They just have to display appropriate etiquette on the golf course. It would be nice, however, if that proper conduct would carry over into their off-course comments. Garcia is trying to make amends by apologizing in a press conference and by trying to reach out to Woods. He has opened a Pandora’s Box with his most recent comments.

Just ask Fuzzy Zoeller. Attacking Tiger Woods in the media and especially in a racist manner is not a very good strategy.

The world’s third logical golf learning centre has opened at Son Gual, Mallorca’s leading golf course.

Created by South African golf professional Robert Baker, logical golf is a simple teaching method that focusses on visualising the complex golf techniques and develops a greater understanding of the bio-mechanics involved in making a solid swing. Baker has used the logical golf programme to work with - among others - four-time Major winner and former world number one Ernie Els; actors Sylvester Stallone, Michael Douglas and Samuel L Jackson; and sports stars Nigel Mansell, Charles Barkley and Wladimir Klitschko. Currently there is only one other logical golf centre in Europe - in Munich - although a third is being created in Monte Carlo backed by financial support from the Monegasque royal family.

Indeed, players of all standards have already booked intensive training weekends and weeks, while the centre has also been earmarked for winter training for national golf teams. The centre also includes a golf gym for improving fitness and a club-fitting facility to ensure maximum benefit is gained from the enhanced performance.Golf professional Tim Holroyd, who runs the logical golf centre at Son Gual, said: “The location of the centre, at a championship venue like Son Gual, is perfect. It means that not only can we host intensive sessions for amateurs, but professionals can also come here and feel comfortable because the course is comparable with many Tour venues.” His sentiments were echoed by European Tour pro Chris Wood, who visited Son Gual recently and wrote on his blog: “The place (Son Gual), which is just outside Palma, is immaculate, while the course is similar to the ones we play on tour.”

The €30m Son Gual golf course opened in 2007 and features large lakes, 66 bunkers, 800 olive trees - some over a thousand years old - wild flowers in the rough areas and vineyards in several areas around the course. Just four years after Golf Son Gual opened, it was recognised by Golf World magazine as the number one on the island and ninth best in Spain.

In May 2009 it hosted the Mallorca Senior Open and received gushing praise from a number of the participants: former Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam even compared the greens to those at Augusta National.The 1991 Masters winner said: “It’s a bit like Augusta. The challenge is currently being processed by Guinness World Records as an official record attempt for the most consecutive different holes to be played in one day by a fourball, and during the challenge, the group will also attempt to break the world record for the quickest 18-holes to be completed on foot by a four-ball. The challenge is being supported by Titleist and FootJoy, supplying apparel, bags, towels, golf balls and caps for the challengers.

In his youth, Tiger always had a slightly closed clubface at the top of his backswing--meaning the face was at a more horizontal angle than his left arm (below, left). I like that for most golfers because it requires less hand and arm rotation to square the face in time for impact. Plus, it puts the left wrist in a slightly bowed or rounded position, which is where it needs to be at impact.

Many amateurs do the opposite and cup the left wrist, and they have a millisecond on the downswing to get it flat again. Tiger’s face position has changed over the years, but

now he’s back to slightly closed, and I think he’ll see better results with the driver.

Also, his arms are closer to his body now, so he’s more connected. He can hit it hard with his feet, knees, hips and torso--and that means less hand action. Just look at that full body release (above, right).

TRY THIS: A slightly closed face is great for average golfers, promoting a lower-trajectory draw. Strengthen your grip so you see another knuckle on your left hand at address.

For most of his professional career, Tiger Woods has been on a mission, as he has often said, to “own” his swing. In the weeks leading up to the Masters, the swing changes he has been working on for more than two years finally seemed to gel, and he looked to be in command of every facet of his game as he regained the No. 1 spot in the World Golf Ranking. I’ve been watching Tiger compete for more than half his life--since I first saw him at age 16 playing the Orange Bowl tournament in Miami--and rarely has he displayed such a complete game as he did in winning earlier this year at Torrey Pines, then Doral, then Bay Hill. From his driver to his approach shots to chipping and putting, he looks very solid and in control. Here’s what I see, and what you can take from it.

DRIVER

SET UP IMPACT WITH THE BACKSWING

SHIFT LEFT, AND HIT DOWN ON THE BALL

Many amateurs try to sweep their fairway woods, and that leads to hitting off the back foot. Here you can see Tiger does a great job of shifting to his front side. With his 5-wood, he catches the ball with the clubhead still going down, even takes a little divot (notice the grass coming up). Tiger plays the ball slightly back in his stance--a couple of inches inside his left heel--and stays centered over it on the backswing. Then he makes that aggressive shift to his front foot, and hits down. When you swing down like that, you hit the ball higher on the clubface and launch it higher.

TRY THIS: Play the ball slightly back, shift left from the top, and hit down. Make sure the low point of your swing comes in front of the ball--and even take some grass.

5-WOOD SHORT IRONS

DON’T LET THE CLUB TURN OVER

Visualization is big for Tiger, as it was for Jack Nicklaus. In this first photo (above, left) Tiger is visualizing a left-to-right shot into No. 18 at Bay Hill. But what I really like here is that this swing is absolutely hookproof; he has eliminated the left miss. He sets up open, makes a fairly vertical backswing, then holds off the release through impact. Notice how the clubhead is well to the right of his hands in the follow-through--he didn’t let the club turn over. Tiger has at times been a bit of a picker with his irons, but I see better divots from him now.

TRY THIS: Take an open stance on short irons, and swing the club along your stance line. You’ll make a little steeper swing and produce good ball-then-turf contact.


TECHNIQUE

BRUSH IT WITH THE LEFT HAND

At Doral in March, Tiger got a putting lesson from his friend Steve Stricker, one of the best putters on tour. Stricker putts with a square stance and uses a left-hand drag action through the ball. I think Tiger had gotten open with his body, and Steve helped him square up. Plus, he seemed to smooth Tiger’s tempo.

The idea of the left hand controlling the stroke is different for Tiger, who has often practiced with his right hand only. In the first image here, notice that he’s making a left-hand-only practice stroke. I also think Stricker, whose putter seems to just brush the ball off the grass, helped Tiger take some of the hit out of his stroke.

TRY THIS: Strive for a smooth rhythm, start to finish. Instead of a rapid strike, think of it as a brush stroke. You’ll make more putts, which is what Tiger’s doing.

PUTTING CHIPPING

TURN YOUR BODY, RETURN THE SHAFT

Again, great visualization here from Tiger, who’s reading this chip like a putt. As for his technique, for a time he was dragging the handle too far forward through impact, which delofts the club. This is a difficult way to chip, because it brings the club’s sharp leading edge more into play.

If you don’t make perfect contact, a slight miss behind the ball causes a chunk.

Tiger now returns the shaft to its setup position by turning his entire body through to the left and keeping the clubhead low after impact. He’s not leaning the shaft excessively toward the target, as I saw him doing last year.

TRY THIS: Use the flange or bottom of the sand wedge as a rudder to help the club glide through the grass. To do that, you have to avoid pushing your hands way forward. Get it right, and a slight miss won’t be bad and might not even be noticed.

your politics are, if you get the chance to play golf with the President -- which is the highest honor in our country -- whether you voted for him or not or agree with the politics, it’s a great honor.

“When the President drove up and he instantly went right over and said, ‘Tiger it was great to see how well you played at Torrey Pines when you won the (Farmers Insurance Open) tournament.’

“He was into it, he wanted to play with Tiger, he was asking about his swing. It was great, it was fun to watch, and it was fun to see it and fun to be part of it.”

The Harmons have a rich history of rubbing shoulders with Washington power brokers.

Claude Snr. was the last club professional to win a major championship when he secured the Masters title in 1948.

His four sons Butch, Craig, Bill, and Dick

all became golf professionals and had a keen eye for teaching, just like their father.

And from a young age they knew that Claude’s golfing prowess opened some pretty special doors.

“My father played with so many presidents himself,” Harmon explained. “He played with Eisenhower and he played with Ford, Nixon, and I got to play with a lot of them too when I was younger.

“I think if my father was still alive he’d be very proud of all of us. He’d be proud of the four sons, he’d be proud of his grandson because in reality we’re just carrying on what he taught us and what he did and we’re a very proud family.

“He had the greatest eye I think of anyone that’s ever taught and he saw things that other people didn’t see and quickly, he knew how to fix them, he’d watch you hit five or six balls and he’d know exactly what you were doing wrong.”

It was that wisdom passed down from

father to son that led Harmon to believe that the 13-year-old kid presented to him in 1993 could go on to be one of the greatest players the game had ever seen.

Woods’ father Earl had noted the work Harmon had done with Greg Norman and asked if he could bring his son over to hit some balls. The session was filmed by Butch’s young son Claude.

“You’ve seen the footage, he’s a tall skinny kid in tennis shoes hitting balls and you just saw this natural talent that this kid had,” Butch said.

“I asked him so many different kinds of questions about how do you do this? Why do you do that? He didn’t know it at the time but I was giving him an examination, trying to find out really what ticked in his head, what he knew about golf.

“The kid was special, he was just a special person you could see it. It was no surprise to me that he turned out to be who he was.”

fumed outside the gates, President Obama enjoyed a leisurely 18 holes with the world’s number one golfer Tiger Woods. If ever there was a powerhouse pairing, this was it. “It was really amazing,” renowned golf coach Harmon told CNN’s Living Golf show about that momentous February day when he had a greenside view.

“If you’d have told me 20 years ago that a black man would be the President of the United States I would have said you’re crazy.

“And if you’d have told me 20 years ago that a black golfer was going to be the greatest golfer that ever walked the planet I’d say you’re crazy, and there they go.”

Harmon is already more than familiar with Woods, having played an influential role in his formative years, sculpting the swing that would capture eight major championships by the age of 26.

He has also coached other stellar names in the world of golf, such as fellow American Phil Mickelson and South African Ernie Els -- both with four majors to their name -- as well as Australians Greg Norman and Adam Scott, the current Masters champion.

But never before in his illustrious career had he been afforded the chance to offer a few tips to the leader of the free world -- himself a golf fanatic.

The U.S. President spent hours in a teaching studio at The Floridian resort, alongside Butch’s son Claude -- also a coach to some of the game’s leading lights -- as they fine-tuned a swing that by Harmon’s

evaluation needed some work.“President Obama loves golf,” he

explained. “He’s not very good, he’s probably an 18 or 20 handicap, plays left-handed, didn’t hit the ball very far with a weak fade but we got him where he could draw and hit about 250, 260.

“When he gets out of office in another three years and he has a chance to play, he could probably get down to a 10 or 12 handicap -- but he loves to play and he knows so much about everything. He loved the place. He said ‘Man, I’m coming back here.’ “We’d love to (have kept) the film of the lesson we gave him but as soon as he walked out the secret service took everything and they had to watch us delete it all from the computers.

“In this day and age with the multimedia stuff all over the world, he didn’t want it to show up on YouTube.

“I said to this one secret service guy, ‘I actually went on YouTube to look at the

president’s swing and it was terrible, you actually might want some of these shots because they’re better than the ones you have. These look pretty good!’ “

The President and a clutch of his closest friends bunkered down at The Floridian for a weekend’s vacation -- his erstwhile secret service detail, naturally, in tow -- on the invitation of the resort’s owner, Jim Crane.

Crane, owner of the Houston Astros baseball team, and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk joined Obama for one of his two rounds on the Sunday, and making up the numbers just happened to be a 14-time major winner.

Not that Woods is a stranger to the President. The 37-year-old delivered a speech at Obama’s inauguration back in 2009, though he has always tried to stay away from politics throughout his career.

But whether Woods is a Democrat, Republican, or apolitical, the invitation to play with the President is not one to be

MID AMATEUR GOLF (UK) ANNOUNCE PLANS TO RE-INTRODUCE A NATIONAL MID AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP FOR 2014

Mid Amateur Golf (www.midamgolf.co.uk) are pleased to announce that they are planning to establish a new championship

for 2014 for Mid-Amateur Golfers that will fill the gap created when the R&A discontinued the British Mid-Amateur Championship in 2007.

The new event will be held in the autumn of 2014 at a venue that is yet to be confirmed and will more than likely be a mixture of stroke play and match play.

“We have been repeatedly asked for a national/international event to take the place of the British Mid-Amateur which was taken off the championship rota in 2007 after the R&A decided that the quality of the entrants was not good enough and the field sizes were diminishing.” Said Jason Morris, Golf Director at Mid-Amateur Golf.

“The English Mid-Amateur Championship (The Logan) which is run by England Golf is the only well-established event in the UK but in recent years we have added the Welsh and Scottish championships and we now feel the time is right to re-introduce a championship for the British Isles.”

The R&A have given their blessing to the venture and the event will more than likely feature on the World Amateur Golf Ranking schedule for 2014. The main difference between the new event and the old British Mid Am will be the qualifying age which will be 35 for the new event and not 25 as in previous years. Mid-Amateur Golf are currently speaking with a number of venues across the UK but are inviting interested clubs to contact them.

“Obviously we need a course that is willing to give up 3-5 days for this event but the world-wide media attention that it will attract will more than compensate for the loss of their course for the championship.” Added Jason. “Eventually we would like to see Mid Amateurs profile raised in the UK in the same way that it is in America. The winner of their national Mid Am even gets an invite to the US Masters as a result of winning their championship.”

Entrants will be expected from all over the world and there are also sponsorship opportunities for organisations - any interested parties should contact the offices of Mid-Amateur Golf at their base in Whitstable in Kent.

Το υψηλό αγωνιστικό επίπεδο των παικτών σε συνδυασμό με την άψογη κατάσταση των γηπέδων και την μοναδική τοποθεσία τους, η διαμονή των παικτών στα The Westin Resort και Romanos The Luxury Collection Resort καθώς και η εξαιρετική φιλοξενία και άρτια οργάνωση των διοργανωτών

συνέβαλλαν ώστε να δημιουργήσουν στους συμμετέχοντες τις καλύτε-ρες εντυπώσεις. Το τουρνουά τί-μησαν με τη συμμετοχή τους 232 παίκτες που έπαιξαν στο πρωτά-θλημα και στο κύπελλο, καθώς και 20 πρόεδροι και 30 γυναίκες παίκτριες που έλαβαν μέρος στο Presidents & Ladies Cup το οποίο διεξήχθη παράλληλα. Στην ομα-δική κατηγορία στο κύπελλο και το πρωτάθλημα την πρώτη θέση κατέλαβε η Ισπανία. Νικητής στο Πρωτάθλημα αναδείχτηκε ο Ισπανός Juan Carlos Tinture και την δεύτερη θέση πήρε ο Έλλη-νας, Γεώργιος Βαφειάδης και στο Κύπελλο νικητής αναδείχτηκε ο Έλληνας, Νικόλαος Γεροσταθό-ολοκληρώθηκε

το 32ο European Senior Golfers Association Championship & Cup στην Costa Navarino της Μεσσηνίας

πουλος. Τέλος στην κατηγορία των προέδρων η Ελλάδα είχε μια ακόμα νίκη καθώς ο Πρό-εδρος του Αττικού Ομίλου Γκολφ, Οδυσσέας Σασσαγιάννης κέρδισε την πρώτη θέση. Στην κατηγορία των γυναικών νικήτρια αναδείχτη-κε η Anna Maria Rebelo από την Πορτογαλία. Κατά την διάρκεια του Επίσημου δείπνου και της Τελετής Λήξης πραγματοποιήθηκε και η Απονομή Επάθλων στους νικητές.

Την οργάνωση και το συντονισμό του τουρ-νουά και των παράλληλων κοινωνικών εκδη-λώσεων ανέλαβε για λογαριασμό του Αττι-κού Ομίλου Γκολφ η εταιρεία AFEA Travel & Congress Services.

ΤΟ ΠΑΝΕΥΡΩΠΑΪΚΟ ΠΡΩΤΑΘΛΗΜΑ ΓΚΟΛΦ ΒΕΤΕΡΑΝΩΝ της European Senior Golf Association

Μεγάλη επιτυχία για τον Αττικό Όμιλο ήταν το Πανευρωπαϊκό Πρωτάθλημα Seniors που έγινε στα δυο γήπεδα του Costa Navarino το τριήμερο 25-28 Ιουνίου 2013. Ο Πρόεδρος της ESGA στην ομιλία του, στην τελετή λήξης, συνεχάρη τον Αττικό για την εξαιρετικά καλή οργάνωση και άψογη διεξαγωγή του αγώνα. Το ίδιο αίσθημα ικανοποίησης εξέφρασαν και οι ξένοι με χειροκροτήματα για τον Αττικό στην διάρκεια της τελετής λήξης. Πολύ ικανοποιητικά για τον Αττικό ήταν και τα αποτελέσματα των αγώνων. Ανάμεσα σε 20 κράτη που συμμετείχαν, η Ελληνική ομάδα στο Championship πήρε την 4η θέση, στο Cup την 6η θέση. Στα ατομικά: Γ. Βαφειάδης 2ος στο gross Νίκος Γεροσταθόπουλος: 1ος στο net Οδυσσέας Σασσαγιάννης: 1ος στο president cup

Balkan Trophy 2013us the use of their facilities in order to prepare the team (Glyfada golf course, Costa Navarino, Crete golf club,Corfu golf club and Porto Carra golf club).

Finally I thank our National coach , Vangelis Ginnis, for his efforts , as well as Mr. Tokkas and Mr. Christopoulos for the time and effort that they put into organizing and implementing the program.

We now look forward to the National strokeplay Championship to be held between 18th -21st of July at Glyfada golf club. We have a strong field of athletes competing this years and we believe that it will be interesting tournament.

F rom the beginning of the year the General Secretary Mr. Tokas and the athletic committee had stressed that the most important event of the year for the national team, was the

Balkan Trophy. We set a program that included the participation of our players in the Corfu International and the Turkish Open as well as a five day training camp at Costa Navarino that would best prepare the team for the Balkan Trophy.

On the 2nd of July Nikos Efthimiadis,Dimitris Rokadakis, Vasilis Koumbakis and I, gathered at the Athens international airport and began our journey to Bled Slovenia. Wednesday was a practice day and the team got a chance to play the golf course under perfect conditions. The boys seemed to be confident in their abilities and looked forward to the challenge. The nations that they would be competing against would be Albania, Armenia ,Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, FYROM ,Moldova, Romania, Serbia and our hosts Slovenia.

Thursday saw the first round of the tournament. After the first nine holes Vasilis was at -1 and Nikos at +1 that was good enough for 1st position. Unfortunately the back nine caused a few problems and at the end of the day we had fallen to 3rd place. Nikos finished at +3, Vasilis +4(with a quadruple bogey on the eleventh) and Dimitris +6.

After the opening round it seemed like Slovenia(even par) and Serbia (at -2) would fight for 1st place and Greece, Czech Republic and Croatia for 3rd place.

On the second day we began as on the first, with Vasilis again completing the 1st nine holes at one under and Nikos at two over. Unfortunately again the back nine posed a problem and Vasilis quadruple bogeyed the eleventh again. Nikos also had difficulties and finished at 8 over. Dimitris, who had been playing solid golf, but was not able to convert the birdie opportunities managed to finish the day at 4 over par and kept as in the race for third. At the end of the day Slovenia was first at two under, Serbia second at one over par, the Czech Republic in 3rd place at 12 over and Greece was tied for 4th with Croatia at 15 over.

On the last day we knew that not only did we need to keep Croatia behind as but that we also needed to make up three strokes on the Czech’s. Our start was not what we had hoped for as Dimitris three putted the first, Nikos birdied the second but bogeyed the third and Vasilis triple bogeyed the second. It was at this point where the boys started to fight and I could see the determination in their eyes. Dimitris played regulation golf from then onwards and finished the 1st nine at one over par and Nikos was also keeping us in the race with a very determined one under par 35. On the back nine Dimitris birdied the 11th, 12th,13th , 14th and 17th hole to reach four under par on the 18th hole. Nikos was also scoring well even though he was not

playing as well as he would have like to. At the 18th he was one under but a bad drive saw him double bogey the last for a very respectable one over for the day. Dimitris, knowing that he had done enough to get us safely into 3rd place, bogeyed the last to post the 2nd best score of the tournament of three under par 70. This is the best score posted by a Greek player, in an international event, in recent history and the first time we have managed to get onto the podium. It was great to watch the boys play the back nine with such determination and spirit. I would like to congratulate them and thank them for their effort and general appearance in the tournament.

In the end the results were as follows:1st place Slovenia (3under par)

Τ ριάντα έξι αγόρια και κορίτσια της Ακαδημίας του Ομίλου Γκολφ Γλυφάδας πήραν μέρος

στην ημερίδα «11ο Kazis Cup», τον ετή-σιο αγώνα που χορηγεί η κυρία Νανά Καζή.

Η συμμετοχή ήταν αυξημένη σε σχέση με πέρυσι (22 παιδιά) και αυτό οφείλε-ται στον επανασχεδιασμό των προπο-νητικών προγραμμάτων του ΟΓΓΑ που επιμελήθηκε η κυρία Σοφία Γεράρδη, μέλος του ΔΣ μέχρι πρότινος.

Η χορηγός του αγώνα, πάντα παρού-σα στην ημερίδα, μας υπενθύμισε: «Καθιέρωσα το Kazis Cup εις μνήμην των γονιών μου, Ιωάννη και Ειρήνης, ιδρυτικών μελών του ΟΓΓΑ, οι οποίοι πρωτόπαιξαν γκολφ στην Αλεξάνδρεια της Αιγύπτου και εκεί παθιάστηκαν με το σπορ. Χαίρομαι να βλέπω νέα παιδιά στο γήπεδο και φέτος έχουμε αυξημένη συμμετοχή».

Ο αδελφός της Νανάς Κάζη, Δημή-τρης, επίσης γκόλφερ, σχολίασε μετά

τον αγώνα: «Εύχομαι τα παιδιά να συ-νεχίσουν την προσπάθεια και το γκολφ να τους φανεί χρήσιμο για το μέλλον τους».

11th Kazis Cup 2013

Μ ικρή συμμετοχή είχε φέ-τος ο αγώνας President Cup του Ομίλου Γυναι-

κών και αυτό επειδή ο αγώνας έγινε σε εργάσιμη ημέρα.

Πάντως οι 15 κυρίες που ήταν στο Glyfada Golf Course (την Τρίτη 11 Ιουνίου), ευχαριστήθηκαν το παι-χνίδι των 18 οπών, όπως ήταν προ-γραμματισμένος στο καλεντάρι του Ladies Club.

Μπορεί φέτος να μην υπήρχαν χορηγοί και πλούσια δώρα για τις νικήτριες, όμως, το κέφι και ο σχο-λιασμός του αγώνα συνεχίστηκε και μετά την 18η τρύπα, όπως είναι κα-θιερωμένο.

Γι αυτό φρόντισε η πρόεδρος (για τρίτη θητεία), Εύα Πολυχρονιάδου, η οποία κάλεσε όλες τις συμμετέ-χουσες σε κατάστημα εστίασης της οδού Λαζαράκη, κι εκεί έγινε η απο-νομή επάθλων με τα… παρελκόμε-να.

Νικήτρια του αγώνα αναδείχτηκε η κυρία Iva Kucerova, τσεχικής κατα-γωγής, άλλοτε captain του Ομίλου, η οποία από τριετίας είναι και διε-θνής διαιτητής.

Τα αποτελέσματα επιμελήθηκε η γεν. γραμματέας του Ladies Club, κυρία Μάιρα Παπανδρέου.

Η νικήτρια του αγώνα, Iva Kucerova, παρέλαβε το κύπελλο από την πρόεδρο του Ομίλου Γυναικών, Εύα Πολυχρονιάδου

Ε βδομήντα τέσσερις παίκτες από 11 χώρες πήραν μέρος στο φετινό «Corfu International», τον ετήσιο διεθνή αγώνα που διοργάνωσε για 39η φορά ο Όμιλος Γκολφ Κέρκυρας. Στο μακροβιότερο εν Ελλάδι τουρνουά, στο οποίο παίρνουν

μέρος ως επί το πλείστον Βρετανοί seniors, φέτος συμμετείχαν πέντε μέλη της εθνικής ομάδας, τους οποίους η ΕΟΓ έστειλε στα πλαίσια προετοιμασίας για τις διεθνείς υποχρεώσεις. Οι πρωταθλητές μας, όπως ήταν φυσικό, μονοπώλησαν το ενδιαφέρον και

κατέκτησαν τις τέσσερις από τις πέντε πρώτες θέσεις. Μάλιστα, ο Χρήστος Νικόπουλος και ο Δημήτρης Ροκαδάκης πέτυχαν hole in one. Ο Νικόπουλος στην τρύπα Νο12 (με 8 iron)

και ο Ροκαδάκης στην Νο9. Πάντως, η οικονομική κρίση που ζούμε τρία χρόνια τώρα ήταν εμφανής στις συμμετοχές από ελληνικής πλευράς. Από Αθήνα έπαιξαν μόνο τα παιδιά της εθνικής, ενώ η μόνη Ελληνίδα του αγώνα ήταν η Βιολέττα Σιώζου.

Διαιτητής του αγώνα ήταν η international referee, Suzanne Kaloudi Ebener.

1. Ο νικητής ανάμεσα στους επαγγελματί-ες, Nicolo Gaggero, παρέλαβε το έπαθλο (και την επιταγή των 7.000 ευρώ), από τον πρόεδρο της οργανωτικής επιτροπής, κ. Θεόδωρο Βασιλάκη και την υπουργό Τουρισμού, κυρία Όλγα Κεφαλογιάννη. 2. Ο Ουαλλός Liam Bond (2ος στους Pro), βραβεύτηκε από τον Chief Executive των PGAE κ. Ian Randell και την πρόεδρο της συντονιστικής επιτροπής, κυρία Κάτια Αβραμίδου. 3. Η ομάδα του Zeke Martinez, περυσι-νού νικητή, διακρίθηκε στο ομαδικό και βραβεύτηκε από τους διεθνείς ποδοσφαι-ριστές, Ορέστη Καρνέζη (αριστερά) και Παναγιώτη Κονέ.

8th AEGEAN AIRLINES PRO-AM | COSTA NAVARINO 2013 Τ ο κορυφαίο αγωνιστικό γεγονός του Eλληνικού γκολφ ήταν και φέτος το Aegean Airlines Pro-Am, το ετήσιο

τουρνουά που διοργανώνει η ομώνυμη αε-ροπορική εταιρία και το οποίο έλαβε χώρα στα δύο γήπεδα της Costa Navarino, το τε-τραήμερο 29 Μαΐου-1 Ιουνίου 2013.Στο 8ο Aegean Airlines Pro-Am έλαβαν μέρος 240 παίκτες από 21 χώρες, ανάμεσα στους οποίους ήταν 60 επαγγελματίες, ως επικεφα-λής ισάριθμων ομάδων. Το επιτυχημένο event για πρώτη φορά παί-χτηκε σε δύο γήπεδα, στα πρότυπα διεθνών διοργανώσεων, γεγονός για το οποίο η Πρόε-δρος της Συντονιστικής Επιτροπής, κυρία Κά-τια Αβραμίδου, σχολίασε: «Με το 8ο Aegean Airlines Pro-Am και χάρη στη διοργάνωση του τουρνουά μας σε δύο γήπεδα γκολφ, The Dunes Course & The Bay Course, άριστης ποιό-τητας και υψηλού γκολφικού ενδιαφέροντος, για πρώτη φορά από τότε που ξεκίνησε το Aegean Airlines Pro-Am το 2006, αλλά και εν γένει για πρώτη φορά στα γκολφικά χρονικά στη χώρα μας, είναι πράγματι εντυπωσιακό ότι καταφέραμε να έχουμε την ανταπόκριση 240 παικτών, δηλαδή 25-30% περισσότερους επισκέπτες σε σχέση με τις προηγούμενες διοργανώσεις μας! Επιπλέον, προσφέραμε στους συμμετέχοντες τη δυνατότητα να μοι-ράζουν το παιχνίδι τους σε δύο γήπεδα, προ-νόμιο που δεν υφίσταται σε καμία άλλη πε-ριοχή της Ελλάδας αυτή τη στιγμή παρά μόνο στην Costa Navarino στη Μεσσηνία, και εκτός Ελλάδος μόνο σε προηγμένες γκολφικά χώρες και προορισμούς. Ο δε άψογος συντονισμός των διευθυντικών ομάδων των δύο γηπέδων συνέβαλε ουσιωδώς στην επιτυχία του τουρ-νουά, αλλά και στην δημιουργία της καλύτε-ρης των εντυπώσεων για τους συμμετέχοντες στα δύο γήπεδα γκολφ της Μεσσηνίας».Η διοργάνωση και αυτού του event ήταν απόλυτα επιτυχημένη, άλλωστε γι’ αυτό το σκοπό ασχολούνται επί μήνες κάποιοι «γκολ-φικοί» παράγοντες της Aegean Airlines που λατρεύουν το γκολφ και προσπαθούν να το επικοινωνήσουν στην Ελλάδα ως ήπιο σπορ και τουριστικό προϊόν. «Σκοπός και στόχος μας από την καθιέρωση του Aegean Airlines Pro-Am ήταν η προώθη-ση του γκολφ ως κύρια μορφή εναλλακτικού τουρισμού για τη χώρα μας με πολυάριθμα οφέλη», υπογράμμισε η κυρία Αβραμίδου, «ψυχή» του τουρνουά, υψηλόβαθμο στέλε-χος της κορυφαίας αεροπορικής εταιρίας, γκόλφερ και Αντιπρόεδρος του Ladies Club «Αθηνά». χή στους κόλπους της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένω-σης Επαγγελματιών Γκόλφερ και όλοι οι professional players που συμμετέχουν μιλά-νε για το the June’s Greek tournament, κάτι που μας επιβεβαιώνει η Κάτια Αβραμίδου, προσθέτοντας: «Το τουρνουά μας είναι δι-εθνές, καθώς κάθε χρόνο περίπου το 70% των ομάδων έρχονται από την Ευρώπη και από χώρες εκτός Ευρώπης. Χαρακτηριστικά εφέτος οι συμμετέχοντες επαγγελματίες και ερασιτέχνες ήταν από 21 διαφορές χώρες (Η.Π.Α., Ν. Αφρική, Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, Σκαν-διναβία, Ιταλία, Ισραήλ, Βαλκάνια κ.ά.)». Στην εντός αγωνιστικού χώρου εξέλιξη ο με-γάλος νικητής επαγγελματίας ήταν ο Ιταλός Nicolo Gaggero (68, 70, 71strokes), ο οποί-ος κέρδισε το υψηλό χρηματικό έπαθλο των 7.000 Ευρώ, ενώ διπλασίασε τους τίτλους

του, καθώς είχε κερδίσει το Aegean Airlines Pro-Am και το 2010. Runner Up ήταν ο Ου-αλλός Liam Bond, παίκτης που έρχεται πολ-λά χρόνια στο τουρνουά και κατατάσσεται σε θέσεις επάθλων. Πέρα από το υψηλού επιπέδου παιχνίδι που παρακολουθήσαμε στο The Dunes Course και Bay Golf Course της Costa Navarino, από τους ξένους παίκτες -κάποιοι εκ των οποίων έρχονται κάθε χρό-νο- οι Έλληνες γκόλφερ δεν είχαν αμελητέα παρουσία, καθώς έχουν ως σημείο αναφο-ράς το συγκεκριμένο τουρνουά, όπως και τα εν λόγω γήπεδα «βιτρίνα» για την χώρα μας. Οι συμμετέχοντες από Γλυφάδα, Κρήτη, Κέρκυρα, Πόρτο Καρράς και Ρόδο έφτασαν τον αριθμό 80, με 16 από αυτούς να είναι επαγγελματίες- μέλη της PGA Greece. Η 3η ομάδα στη σειρά κατάταξης των 6 νικητριών ομάδων ήταν η Aegean Team, στην οποία

συμμετείχαν με τον επαγγελματία Henrik Engdahl, ο Πρόεδρος της Aegean κ. Θεόδω-ρος Βασιλάκης, ο κ. Νικόλαος Κοσμάτος και ο κ. Μάκης Παπαδόπουλος. Καλύτερος Έλ-ληνας pro ήταν ο 26χρονος Αδάμ Κρητικός (8ος στην κατάταξη), ο οποίος εργάζεται ως trainee προπονητής στην Costa Navarino.

Το φετινό “Football and Golf Clinics”! Τέσσερις διεθνείς ποδοσφαιριστές της εθνι-κής μας ομάδας ποδοσφαίρου, που παί-ζουν σε ομάδες του εξωτερικού (Γιώργος Σαμαράς, Ορέστης Καρνέζης, Μιχάλης Ση-φάκης, Παναγιώτης Κονέ) με τον τεχνικό σύμβουλο Τάκη Φύσσα και τον προπονητή της Εθνικής κ. Φερνάντο Σάντος, ήταν κα-λεσμένοι της Aegean και συμμετείχαν στην ειδική γκολφική αθλητική εκδήλωση υπό τον τίτλο “Football & Golf Clinics”. Πρόκει-ται για ειδικό event, που καθιερώθηκε το 2010 και έχουν δώσει το παρών οι ξένοι άσοι

της μπάλας, Christiane Carembeu, Perdran Jorgevitz, Luciano Galletti, ενώ σταθερή αξία είναι ο βετεράνος του Ολυμπιακού, Τάκης Γκώνιας, ο οποίος από τότε που κρέμασε τα ποδοσφαιρικά παπούτσια του παίζει γκολφ σε επίπεδο επαγγελματία γκόλφερ! Το σεμινάριο έγινε στο practice range του The Dunes Course και οι δημοφιλείς παίκτες είδαν, άκουσαν και επιχείρησαν πρακτική εφαρμογή των οδηγιών Ελλήνων προπο-νητών. Σε ρόλο… Φερνάντο Σάντος ήταν ο Γιώργος Διάκου, ο Ευγένιος Παπαδόπουλος, ο Θέμης Γκίνης, και ο Αδάμ Κρητικός, ενώ, παράλληλα, οι παλαίμαχοι ποδοσφαιριστές Jörn Andersen και Andreas Möller μαζί με τον Τ. Γκώνια, έδωσαν μαθήματα ποδοσφαί-ρου και γκολφ για τους νεότερους, τα παιδιά της ακαδημίας Γκολφ της Costa Navarino, τους δημοσιογράφους και τους φιλάθλους.

Χαιρετισμός προέδρου Aegean Στην απονομή επάθλων, ο κ. Θεόδωρος Βα-

σιλάκης, Πρόεδρος της Aegean Airlines και παίκτης στον αγώνα, συνεχάρη τον επαγ-γελματία νικητή και τον δεύτερο στο ατομι-κό παιχνίδι, και τις έξι νικήτριες ομάδες του Aegean Airlines Pro-Am, καθώς και τους νι-κητές του «Aegean Cup 2013» για τις εξαι-ρετικές τους επιδόσεις και τη γνήσια άμιλλά τους. Παράλληλα, εξέφρασε την ευγνωμοσύ-νη του προς όλους όσους «αγκάλιασαν» το 8ο “Aegean Airlines Pro-Am”, συμβάλλοντας με τις προσπάθειές τους στην επιτυχία και της φετινής διοργάνωσης. Ο κ. Θ. Βασιλάκης βαθιά συγκινημένος αφι-έρωσε την τελετή στη μνήμη του καπετάν Βασίλη Κωνσταντακόπουλου λέγοντας: «Σε ευχαριστούμε καπετάν Βασίλη Κωνστα-ντακόπουλε για την αγάπη που έτρεφες για τον τόπο σου τη Μεσσηνία, τον θαυμασμό σου για τις φυσικές ομορφιές της πατρίδας σου και την επιμονή σου να συμβάλεις στην ανάπτυξη αυτού του μοναδικού αθλήματος, του γκολφ. Η δύναμή σου, η επιμονή σου και η σοφία σου θα αποτελούν πάντα πηγή έμπνευσης για εμάς!» Συμπληρώνοντας:

«Νιώθουμε ιδιαιτέρως χαρούμενοι και τυ-χεροί που η οικογένειά σου και ιδίως ο γιος σου, Αχιλλέας, συνεχίζει με επιτυχία την προσπάθειά σου για να γίνουν πράξη όλα όσα ονειρευτήκατε μαζί εδώ και περισσότε-ρα από 30 χρόνια».Περαιτέρω, τόνισε, ότι σε αυτό το δύσκολο περιβάλλον, οι προσπάθειες για την οικο-δόμηση ενός νέου έθνους ανάπτυξης και ευημερίας πρέπει να υποστηριχθούν από έξυπνες νέες επιχειρηματικές ιδέες και ευ-καιρίες για εναλλακτικές επενδύσεις. Το γκολφ είναι μία τέτοια παγκόσμια αγορά με τεράστιο δυναμικό. Έχουν γίνει πολλές μελέτες που επαληθεύ-ουν τον θετικό αντίκτυπο του αθλήματος στην κοινωνία και την οικονομία. Ειδικότε-ρα ο αθλητικός τουρισμός στον τομέα του γκολφ μειώνει την εποχικότητα, προσελκύει τουρίστες υψηλού επιπέδου που δαπανούν πολλά χρήματα, ενισχύει την γκάμα και τη διαφοροποίηση των τουριστικών προορι-σμών και, κυρίως, βελτιώνει την εικόνα του προορισμού.

Χαιρετισμός υπουργού ΤουρισμούΗ υπουργός Τουρισμού κυρία Όλγα Κεφα-λογιάννη στον χαιρετισμό της μεταξύ άλ-λων είπε «Είναι μεγάλη χαρά και τιμή μου να είμαι μαζί σας σε αυτό τον ξεχωριστό προορισμό της Costa Navarino που αποτε-λεί την παρακαταθήκη του καπετάν Βασίλη Κωνσταντακόπουλου. Αυτό το τουρνουά που οργανώθηκε από την Aegean, μια βραβευ-μένη ελληνική αεροπορική εταιρεία η οποία καθημερινά μεγαλώνει και αποτελεί έναν από τους σημαντικότερους εταίρους στην ανάπτυξη του ελληνικού τουρισμού, χαρα-κτηρίζεται από τους ειδικούς ως ένα από τα σημαντικότερα γεγονότα του γκολφ στην Ευ-ρώπη. Η Emirates αναδείχθηκε «Καλύτερη Αεροπορική Εταιρεία στον κόσμο»

Ε πιβεβαιώνοντας τη θέση της ως μία από τις κορυφαίες διεθνείς αεροπορι-κές εταιρείες στον κόσμο, η Emirates

κατέκτησε σήμερα το πολυπόθητο βραβείο «Καλύτερη Αεροπορική Εταιρεία στον Κό-σμο», όπως παρουσιάστηκε από την Skytrax στα World Airline Awards 2013.

Πέραν της κατάκτησης του βραβείου «Κα-λύτερη Αεροπορική Εταιρεία στον Κόσμο», η Emirates κέρδισε δύο ακόμα βραβεία όπως το βραβείο «Καλύτερη Αεροπορική Εταιρεία Μέσης Ανατολής» και το βραβείο «Καλύτερη Ψυχαγωγία Εν Πτήσει στον Κόσμο» για ένατη συνεχή χρονιά. Τα βραβεία παρέλαβε σήμε-ρα ο Tim Clark, Πρόεδρος της Emirates Airline στο πλαίσιο του Paris Airshow. Η έρευνα της Skytrax για τα World Airline Awards διεξήχθη σε περισσότερα από 18 εκατομμύρια επι-βάτες που ταξιδεύουν για επαγγελματικούς λόγους ή για λόγους αναψυχής από περισ-σότερες από 160 χώρες.

«Η τιμή που λαμβάνουμε κατακτώντας τα συγκεκριμένα βραβεία, είναι απόδειξη των ακατάπαυστων προσπαθειών μας να είμα-στε η καλύτερη αεροπορική εταιρεία στον κόσμο», δήλωσε ο κ. Clark. «Προσπαθούμε συνεχώς να προσφέρουμε στους πελάτες μας σε σταθερή βάση παγκόσμιας κλάσης υπηρεσίες, από τη στιγμή της κράτησης μέχρι και τη στιγμή που φτάνουν στον προορισμό τους, έχοντας ολοκληρώσει το ταξίδι τους».
