Glass Frit mixture Deposition Methods

1 Preparation of Frit Mixture

a Tools

i Roller Mill

ii Weight Scale spatulas

iii Paste Bottle (Polyethylene Jars or glass bottle ndash Wide mouth)

b Materials

i Frit Powder

ii Vehicles(Solvent)

1 α-Terpineol

2 Buthyl Carbotol Acetate (aka Diethylene Glycol n-butyl Ether Acetate) + Nitrocellulose (or Binder substitutes)

iii The reason for adding binder in to the frit mixture is to get stronger film after dry so the film would not be broken easily However it will cause voids in the frit seal if it was not removed (burned) completely during the pre-glaze or sealing process BCA is very common vehicle which is used for mixing a thick film paste in FPD and I have chosen α-Terpineol due to its stability with frit powder in the mixture

c Process

i Mix Frit powder and α-Terpineol or Frit powder with BCA + Nitrocellulose pre-mixture The ratio varies with type of frit and vehicles I had normally 10 ndash 11 1

ii Rolling on the roller mill at low speed (10 ndash 20 rpm) Higher speed is not recommended because it would separate powder and vehicle rather than mixing

iii Normally 3 hours before dispensing to ensure the frit powder and vehicle are mixed thoroughly

2 Dispensing

It is simplest way to apply frit deposition on the plain substrate You can adjust the pressure and Gantry speed to dispense required thickness of frit material

- Advantage

o Easy amp Simple process

o Deposition over continuous surface with different heights

o Wider process range for different frit mixture

- Disadvantage

o Rough Frit quantity control

o Deposition accuracy (aspect ratio position) is marginal( +- 05mm)

- A caution

o The smooth joint between starting point and ending joint without big bump or split joints

a Tools

i Pneumatic Dispenser

The Simplest and Cheapest way to test the process and material

Using a hand syringe to draw over the seal location can be done easily however because it depends on hands movement Unsteady hands cause uneven thickness and wavy seal lines

ii Pneumatic Dispenser amp X-Y-Z gantry System

The Tool in the link is an used equipment which combine Dispenser and programmable X-Y-Z gantry system It can provide uniform thickness of frit deposition on accurate position The price shown in BidSevice is $6500 - $9500

Asymtek Systems in Bid-Service

1 I have used ASYMTEK_403G model with dispensing air pressure setting was 2Kgcm2 It covers up to 18rdquox18rdquo

2 EFD is also a well known system They have similar systems like Asymtek I couldnrsquot find any used one in Bid-Service but often you can find one in the market EFD Dispensing system

iii Other parts and accessories

1 Dispensing tips

EFD has many kinds of dispensing tips Since the frit paste has solid particles inside and higher viscosity I would like to recommend tapered tips I have used Grey Green and rarely Pink colored ones Grey one has 119mm D(inside) Green one has 084mm and Pink for 061mm

2 Waste trays

Disposable trays

3 Barrels and Caps

General Purpose Syringe barrels can be used if the dispenser head accepts it Sometimes Dispensing unit specify a special barrels however this kind of disposal barrel provide very convenient and mess-free work

4 Pressure caps (Pistons)

Having a inner pressure caps will prevent Air burst during the dispensing and visualize how much of material left in the barrel

iv Dry Oven

Either convection oven or IR Oven can be used to dry dispensed frit material Some of Convection oven give an excessive vibration to the shelf from the blower and it may spread the frit too wide

I used blue-M convection oven with forced ventilation attached for the safety

If you have high temperature oven for sealing process it can be used for Dry process as well Blue M Ovens

3 Screen Printing

It is used more accurate deposition (Tighter control of the dimension of the film ) however more process steps are involved

- Advantage

o Accurate control of seal line

o High Aspect ratio High viscosity

- Disadvantage

o Many other process steps are involved

o Hard to print on the uneven or rough surfaces

a Tools and Parts

i Screen Printer

There are many manufacturers which you can choose from Most of Asian companies (LCD amp PDP) are using Japanese manufacturers

Newlong Microtec

However almost any screen printer can be used for frit deposition since it doesnrsquot require high accuracy and fancy functions Bid-service has many used one available since screen printers are being used for SMT Most well known printer brands in North America are

AMI DEK MPM

Used tools have the price ranges $ 3000 - $25000 at Screen Printers in Bid-Service

Some of them are customized for printing on PCBs only Since they donrsquot have flat bed for the glass substrates much of modification will be needed

ii Squeegee blade grinder

Squeegee is made of Urethane extruded into specific shape The edge of squeegee material gets worn off after many strokes of printing They need to be grinded to ensure the quality of printing

iii Screen Masks

Screen masks has photo-patterned opening on mesh attached to the metal frame This opening is where you want frit material printed

In order to make screen mask in house you need to have

Mesh Frame (determined from Screen printerrsquos specification ) Exposure system Film photo mask Mesh stretcher Wet station for developing screen mask Emulsion amp Emulsion coater Dark Room to apply emulsion(Photosensitive polymer solution ) Low temperature dryer (Emulsion dry)

The Brief process flow is

1 Blank Screen Mask (Mesh stretching Bonding of mesh to the mask frame )

2 Emulsion coat ( multi time coat of emulsion with emulsion coater in the dark room between each coat it need Dry)

3 Photo mask film type Negative mask Printing pattern in Black

4 Exposure ( UV exposure with the photo mask on the screen mask)

5 Developing ( Pressure Water spray )

6 Final Dry and ready to use

There are a number of companies who can provide screen masks Off-Contact in Toledo OH (4756 W Bancroft St Toledo Ohio 43615 Phone 419-255-5546 Contact Allen Shaw aschalloffcontactcom) is one of them where iFire was getting screen masks from They were quite reliable and quick to respond

Since Frit paste has relatively high viscosity than normal thick film paste lower count number of mesh needs to be used I recommend 120-150 (number of thread in 1 inch) Stainless steel mesh will give better printing but it will eat up the squeegee blade faster than polyester mesh

Screen mask provider usually has many kinds of mesh in stock so you just need to specify the mesh and frame size that you want to use The screen printer determines the frame size You can also use metal mask attached to mesh It is quite often used for Solder paste printing

iv Squeegee blade

Most usual material for the squeegee blade is Urethane rubber and the shape of blade is also determined by the type of printer Some printers can use metal blade as well

4 Summary

For the Even though screen printing gives much better accuracy and controls for frit past deposition Most of people choose Dispensing method because

1 Simpler process and less procedure involved

2 Usually the deposition of frit material for sealing doesnrsquot require such a accuracy

3 It also give quite comparable throughput when it is automated

Therefore my recommendation is to use dispensing process Unlike the screen printing tools it is relatively easy to find cheap reliable used equipment and easy to set up the process
