Symeon the God-receiver and Anna the Prophetess February 3 During the reign of the Egyptian Emperor Ptolemy Philadelphus, Simeon was chosen as one of the famous Seventy, to whom was entrusted the task of translating the Bible from Hebrew into Greek. Simeon was per-forming his task conscientiously, but in the process of translating the book of the Proph-et Isaiah he came upon the prophe-cy: Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son (Isaish 7:14). He became confused and took a knife to remove the word “virgin” and replace it with the words “young wom-an,” and thus to translate it into Greek. At that moment, however, an angel of God ap-

peared to Simeon and restrained him from his intention, explaining to him that the prophecy was true, that it was correctly written. The messenger of God also said that Simeon would become convinced of it personally, for, ac-cording to the will of God, he would not die until he saw the Messiah born of the Virgin. The righteous Simeon rejoiced to hear such a voice from heaven, left the prophecy unchanged and thanked God, Who made him wor-thy to live and see the Promised One. When the young Child Jesus was pre-sented in the Temple in Jerusalem by the Virgin Mary, the Spirit of God re-vealed this to Simeon, who was very old and “as white as a swan.” Simeon quickly entered the Temple and there recognized both the Virgin and the young Child by the light that shone around their heads like a halo. The joy-ful Simeon took Christ into his hands and prayed to God to release him from this life: Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servent depart in peace, according to Thy word: For mine eyes have seen Thy salvation (Luke 2:29-30). Anna the Prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, was also there; she too recognized the Messiah, and she proclaimed Him to the people. At that time Anna was eighty-four years old. St. Simeon died shortly thereafter. This righteous El-

der Simeon is considered to be a protector of young children.

16th Sunday of Matthew St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:1-10

    Prokeimenon. Mode 3. Psalm 46.6,1

Sing praises to our God, sing praises.

Verse: Clap your hands, all you nations. The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to

    the Corinthians 6:1-10

Brethren, working together with him, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the accepta-ble time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

    Gospel Ευαγγέλιο

16th Sunday of Matthew The Gospel According

    to Matthew 25:14-30

The Lord said this parable: "A man going on a jour-ney called his servants and entrusted to them his property; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more. So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had re-ceived the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faith-ful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master answered him, 'You wicked and sloth-ful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bank-ers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worth-less servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." As he said these things he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!"

    Post- Presentation; Holy and Just

    Symeon the Theo-dochos (+0)

Hymn of the Feast Rejoice, O full of grace, Virgin The-otokos, because from you has risen the only Sun of jus-tice, Christ our God, lightning those in darkness. Rejoice as well, O Elder Righteous, having held in your arms the liberator of our souls, who grants also Resurrection to us.

    Resurrectional Apolytikion

Rejoice all the heavenly, and exult all the terrestial, for the Lord, having established great strength with his mighty arm; he trampled down, death by his own death; he became the first to rise from the dead, from the bowels of Hades he delivered all of us, and bestowed his great mercy upon the world.

    Apolytikion of the Church

To-day is the crown of our Salvation and the manifestation of the Eternal Mys-tery. The Son of God becometh the son of the Virgin, and Gabriel an-nounceth the good tidings of grace. Wherefore let us also with him cry to the Mother of God: Hail ! Thou that art full of grace; the Lord is with thee.

O You who sancti-fied by your birth a virgin womb, and blessed the hands of Symeon as seemed most apropriate, you came, indeed, O Christ our God, and saved us all. But bring peace to the commonwealth in time of war, and secure in strength, the rulers you have truly loved, as the only one who loved mankind.

    BLESSING OF HOMES

In memory of Christ’s Baptism on the Feast of

Epiphany, when Jesus sanctified all the waters of

the world, the Orthodox Church follows an ancient

tradition of holding the Service of the Blessing of

the Waters on January 6. The Church asks God’s

blessing to come upon the water, which we then

share with all believers. Through this water the

grace of God comes upon us! Following the service,

the priest blesses all the believers in the Church

with the holy water and offers them a bottle to

take home and drink each day, or whenever they

feel a special need for God’s grace. The Church al-

so has the beautiful tradition of the pries taking

the holy water into the homes of all believers and

blesses their home. Through this ritual we ask for

God’s blessings to come upon the household for the

new year. I am looking forward to visiting all the

homes of parishioners from January 7th - Febru-

    ary 15th.

The following schedule gives an idea of when I will

try to visit your area. I will visit the elderly and

    shut-ins during the morning hours.

For those of you who work, I will come between

    5:00 - 8:00 p.m. If you have a specific time that you

want me to visit, call the church office

It is the practice of our Church to give the name of a Saint to the new born child. By

assuming the name of a Saint, we not only honor and express our gratitude to a Holy

Person for his exceptional contribution to the Orthodox Faith, but provide the new

Christian with an example worthy of emulation. The Saint then becomes the Patron

of the child protecting it from all danger. Through his prayers, God will grant the

child the necessary illumination to become a zealous member of the Church and an

    ardent follower of Christ.

Each month we will be acknowledging those celebrating their nameday in our

monthly bulletin. If by chance we accidentally miss someone's nameday, we ask that

you please contact the Church Office so that we may correct our records. We extend

our prayers to all those celebrating January Namedays and beseech our heavenly

Father to grant them many years.

Dear Friends of the Community, In an effort to defray the cost of publishing our Weekly Bulletin, & Vision, the Parish Council would like to invite anyone who wishes to support the Community to offer a small donation of $250.00 for a “business card” sized ad which will be placed on the back inside pages of each publication for the calendar year, 2018. We generally publish a Weekly Bulletin as well as a Quarterly Newsletter, and with this program, hope to cut our publication cost in half by gathering 36 ads which will take up the last four pages of the Vision & Bulletin. If you are interested in this program, please send a business card that we will reproduce. Please also en-close a check made out to The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church for $250.00.
