THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

According to the Eastern Fathers, the meaning of Christmas is summed up in the following phrase:

God humbled Himself and became man, in order to make man god. Not an almighty god, or moral, or

good, or kind, but a god who can love, be humble and be sacrificed so he is resurrected, as was the case with Jesus Christ. The birth of Christ in the heart of man, the experience of inner peace which is truly in-

stilled wherever Christ is born, are the core of the Christmas feast and the summary of Orthodox Theolo-gy.

It is truly paradoxical and also indicative of western culture that the symbol, the image that domi-

nates these days on the planet, is not that of the homeless and needy Christ, but the exuberant and over-whelming Santa Claus. It is also challenging that major American journals these days, instead of respect-

ing the one Person celebrating His birthday, publish all kinds of headlines. They sow doubt in people’s

hearts if the historical Jesus has something in common with Christ declared by the Apostles, if He was in-deed God, and if Mary indeed Virgin ....

Christmas is the ultimate manifestation of God's love. Love and especially this divine love, can not be coldly probed by one’s brain, but can be felt, experienced with all his existence in silence and glorifica-

tion.

In order for the believer to be able to feel that God is being born in the manger of his heart among

the beasts of one’s passions and desires, he must purify himself using, especially forty days before the

Feast, three powerful medications: fasting, confession and prayer. Fasting is of particular importance to the Orthodox Church. About two hundred days a year, an Orthodox abstains from meat and dairies.

Christmas lent is not just an abstinence from some foods, nor is it a diet. It is not negative but very posi-

tive. The believer, lacking in meat, tries to appreciate and respect the "meat" and the entire inanimate nature with which it is related and from which it feeds.

At the same time, the believer confesses in order to participate in the table of God. In the East confession and the spiritual father are of paramount importance. Confession is not tantamount to an apol-ogy or interrogation where appropriate penalties are imposed to mitigate the injured righteousness of

God. God is love, and sin in Orthodoxy is not a legal wrong or an offense, but it is identical to the sickness of soul and body. Sin in ancient Greek means failure. I do not use love in order to love my fellow man,

but in order to adore myself. The Church is the hospital and the confessor is the father, the doctor who

has not only knowledge but also experience how man can be cured. That is why, in confession, the priest is not hiding behind a curtain, but sits next to the believer and discusses the problems with him, as he

discusses with his son the issues that concern him. In the end he recommends appropriate medications

depending on the person's exclusive character. In this way, the believer does not attempt to uproot the passions, which are the inherent forces of the soul but to transform them.

Christmas is therefore the day when Christ Himself is born in the heart of every believer. And when Christ is born in one’s heart, then all the material goods for which so much emphasis is placed by

the civilized world are of relative importance. The true Happi-

ness, the real Joy, the real Peace are flooding soul and body. The birth of Jesus Christ didn’t take place once two thousand

years ago. Christ is born today! "Christ is born, glorify! Today

(and not yesterday ...) He is born of the Virgin! ".

Το νοημα των χριστουγεννων

Σύμφωνα με τους Πατέρες της Ανατολής το νόημα των Χριστουγέννων συνοψίζεται στην εξής φράση: ο Θεός έγινε ταπεινός άνθρωπος, για να γίνει ο άνθρωπος θεός.. Οχι θεός παντοδύναμος, ούτε απλά ηθικός,

καλός ή ευγενικός, αλλά θεός που μπορεί να αγαπήσει, να ταπεινωθεί και να θυσιαστεί για να αναστηθεί και να κατακτήσει την αιωνιότητα, όπως συνέβη και με τον Ιησού Χριστό. Η γέννηση του Χριστού στην καρδιά του

ανθρώπου, η εμπειρία της εσωτερικής ειρήνης την οποία όντως φέρνει όπου γεννιέται ο Χριστός, αποτελούν τον πυρήνα της γιορτής των Χριστουγέννων και την περίληψη της ορθόδοξης Θεολογίας.

Είναι πραγματικά παράδοξο αλλά και ενδεικτικό της δυτικής κουλτούρας πρώτον ότι το σύμβολο, η

εικόνα, που κυριαρχεί αυτές τις μέρες στον πλανήτη, δεν είναι αυτή του άστεγου και άπορου Χριστού που γιορτάζει αλλά του πληθωρικού και καταναλωτικού Santa Claus. Ακόμη, είναι προκλητικό ότι τα μεγαλύτερα σε

κυκλοφορία αμερικάνικα περιοδικά, τέτοιες ημέρες, αντί να σεβασθούν το Πρόσωπο που γιορτάζει τα γενέθλιά

Του, δημοσιεύουν πρωτοσέλιδα άρθρα ενσπείροντας στις καρδιές την αμφιβολία εάν ο ιστορικός Ιησούς έχει κάτι κοινό με το Χριστό που κήρυξαν οι απόστολοι, αν Αυτός ήταν όντως Θεός και αν η Μαρία όντως

Παρθένος….

Τα Χριστούγεννα αποτελούν κορυφαία εκδήλωση αγάπης του Θεού. Την αγάπη και ιδιαίτερα αυτή τη

θεϊκή αγάπη, δεν μπορεί κανείς να την αναλύσει ψυχρά με τον εγκέφαλό του, αλλά προσπαθεί να την

αισθανθεί, να τη βιώσει με όλη του την ύπαρξη, σιωπώντας και δοξολογώντας.

Προκειμένου στην Ανατολή να μπορέσει ο πιστός να νοιώσει το Θεό γεννημένο στο στάβλο της

καρδιάς του ανάμεσα στα κτήνη των παθών και των επιθυμιών του, καθαρίζει τον εαυτό του χρησιμοποιώντας, ιδιαίτερα τις σαράντα μέρες που προηγούνται της Εορτής, τρία φάρμακα: τη νηστεία, την

εξομολόγηση και την προσευχή. Η νηστεία έχει ιδιαίτερη σημασία στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία. Διακόσιες περίπου

μέρες το χρόνο ο Ορθόδοξος νηστεύει από κρέας και γάλα. Η νηστεία προ των Χριστουγέννων δεν συνιστά απλά αποχή από ορισμένα φαγητά ούτε ταυτίζεται με τη δίαιτα. Δεν έχει αρνητικό χαρακτήρα αλλά κατεξοχήν

θετικό. Ο πιστός στερούμενος από το κρέας, προσπαθεί να εκτιμήσει, να σεβαστεί το «κρέας» και ολόκληρη

την άψυχη φύση με την οποία είναι συγγενής αλλά και από την οποία τρέφεται.

Παράλληλα ο πιστός προκειμένου να συμμετάσχει στο τραπέζι του Θεού εξομολογείται. Στην Ανατολή η εξομολόγηση και ο πνευματικός πατέρας έχουν εξέχουσα σημασία. Η εξομολόγηση δεν ισοδυναμεί με μια απολογία ή ανάκριση όπου επιβάλλονται οι κατάλληλες ποινές για να εξευμενιστεί η πληγωμένη δικαιοσύνη

του Θεού. Ο Θεός είναι αγάπη και η αμαρτία στην Ορθοδοξία δεν αποτελεί νομικό πταίσμα ή αδίκημα, αλλά

ταυτίζεται με την αρρώστια της ψυχής και του σώματος. Αμαρτία στα ελληνικά σημαίνει αστοχία. Δε χρησιμοποιώ την αγάπη για να αγαπήσω το συνάνθρωπό μου, αλλά για να λατρεύσω το διχασμένο και

ετοιμόρροπο ψευδοείδωλο του εαυτού μου. Η Εκκλησία είναι το νοσοκομείο και ο πνευματικός είναι ο

πατέρας, ο ιατρός που δεν διαθέτει μόνο γνώσεις, αλλά και πείρα για το πώς μπορεί ο άνθρωπος να θεραπευθεί. Γι΄ αυτό και κατά την εξομολόγηση ο ιερέας δεν κρύβεται πίσω από ένα παραπέτασμα, αλλά

κάθεται δίπλα στον πιστό και συζητά τα προβλήματα μαζί του, όπως συζητά με το γιό του τα θέματα που τον

απασχολούν. Στο τέλος συστήνει κατάλληλα φάρμακα ανάλογα με την προσωπική ιδιοσυγκρασία του πιστού. Με τον τρόπο αυτό ο πιστός δεν προσπαθεί να ξεριζώσει τα πάθη, που αποτελούν έμφυτες δυνάμεις της

ψυχής αλλά να τα μεταμορφώσει.

Τα Χριστούγεννα είναι συνεπώς η μέρα κατά την οποία γεννάται ο ίδιος ο Χριστός στην καρδιά κάθε

πιστού. Και όταν ο Χριστός γεννηθεί στην καρδιά, τότε όλα τα υλικά αγαθά για τα οποία τόση έμφαση δίνεται

στον πολιτισμένο κόσμο, έχουν σχετική σημασία. Η πραγματική Ευτυχία, η πραγματική Χαρά, η πραγματική Ειρήνη πλημμυρίζουν την

ψυχή και το Σώμα. Η γέννηση του Ιησού Χριστού δεν έγινε μόνον

πριν δύο χιλιάδες χρόνια. Ο Χριστός γεννάται σήμερα! “Χριστός γεννάται δοξάσατε! Σήμερον (κι όχι χτες….) γεννάται εκ Παρθένου! ”

Dearly beloved in Christ,

As we approach the Holy Feast of Christmas, I want to communicate with you with some pure words, taken out of my heart, which I hope you read with great care. Those of you who came to the last General Assembly already heard this, but I now wish to share these thoughts with the entire congregation. Our Holy Church is the place of our salvation, the place in which daily we come closer to our God and Father. That is why we must account for the great re-sponsibility that we all have to deliver to the next generations a thriving parish, financially healthy, full of chil-dren and adults who come to hear the word of God and quench their spiritual thirst from the cool source of Or-thodoxy.

The role of the Priest, according to the Bylaws of the Greek Orthodox Church in America, is not limited only to the religious ceremonies, but also includes overseeing the good management of the property of the church for the spiritual benefit of its people. That's why I'm so concerned. You have all been informed in the past, about the poor condition of our buildings. Of these, the community hall and schools are 50 years old, and the church is almost 100 years old, since it was built in 1923. I feel that we cannot close our eyes; God does not allow us to, and not do the right thing, which is the repair and restoration of the Church.

Many churches around us over the last few years have been renewed and beautified. The Cathedral, with its magnificent hall, the Taxiarches with hagiography, marble floors and the construction of a chapel. Saint Basil, with an elevator, hagiography, repair of the bells and a metal roof. The Annunciation in Woburn. St. George in Lynn. Agios Athanasios with the purchase of this large complex that also includes schools. Also, Saint Nektarios, where they completed the renovation of the church from the metal ceiling to the lower hall, and now they have finished the hagiographies. Agios Dimitrios and Saint Catherine. The list goes on and on. All the churches were restored and transformed to modern facilities. Now it's our turn to make some serious decisions.

We all understand that the work that we have before us is really extended and will need a significant amount of money. But we are not allowed to postpone the problems for the next generation because then it will be much worse. After an almost unanimous decision of the General Assembly we assigned a reputable engineer-ing firm to draw plans and make proposals. This was a necessary move, because without such plans we would not be eligible for a loan. The engineers will also relieve us from another affliction that often causes confronta-tion within the church. They will settle the disputes that arise when each one of us has a different opinion about what is needed.

What needs to be done is a lot. All the buildings, and especially the Church, must be secured from the inflow of water which has caused extensive cracks in the walls and floors. Engineers call it a protective cover (building envelope) and it is the first to be restored. We need to make our buildings accessible to people with disabilities and add elevators; we need to add sprinklers to enhance fire safety. Replace the entire facade of the community building that is about to fall. Permanently restore the roof of the community building which is plagued by a problematic design. Architecturally connect with Byzantine elements the facade of the church with the community building to create a unique elegant ecclesiastical building.

Since the construction of the narthex that took place 30-40 years ago, very little has been done for our Church. All these years we have remained inactive, allowing weather and time to damage the buildings. We only covered the costs for some patchwork. How else would you describe the painting of silicone on the outer walls for a number of years, while they were full of cracks from which the ice came inside and made them bigger? The only serious repair we made was when we recently replaced the Church roof.

The expenses of a large building complex like ours are great. Annually they exceed $500,000. The parking lot income secures about 2/5 of that amount, or $ 200,000. The rest have to come from the Festival, some fund-raising meal events during the year, candles, donations and your annual subscription.

So let us look at these revenues from the beginning. The festival, which is a wonderful source of revenue

and covers about 1/5 ($100,000) of the budget, after the impressive increase over the past five years, seems to have reached the maximum. The reasons are many, but the main reason is that every year we have fewer vol-unteers among the parishioners. The elderly age more and the younger ones do not have time or do not want to enter the kitchen! Thus, the festival net income is lower because we now pay more for help from outside. It seems that this trend will increase over time.

The income from fundraising meals, despite the great effort of those who organize them, have begun to suffer from "old age", that is, fewer participants show up. As for the candles of the church, this is a painful sto-ry. When I first went to church in America in 1985, the candle was $1. Thirty-three years later, and while the values of the houses in Somerville rose from $50-60,000 to a million and more, the church candle still yields $1! For this reason, candles produce approximately the same amount of money every year, i.e. around $40,000. On the contrary, donations to our church are constantly decreasing since in 2015 they were $75,000, while they have gradually decreased to $33,000 by 2018. The Church's income from sacraments, weddings and baptisms, was only $800 this year. Have you wondered for a moment why the other churches have many more sacra-ments? What is it that attracts young couples to churches that are well-kept, perfectly organized, beautifully decorated with marbles and hagiographies according to the Orthodox tradition and make their wedding, baptize and grow up their children there?

As far as our “dues” are concerned these amount to around $56,000, which is barely 11% of the Church's income! They account for just $250 per family! Have you ever wondered how much we pay each year for utilities, repairs and cleanliness of the Church? $80-85,000! In fact it breaks down to $45,000 for gas and electricity with our old and inefficient systems that cost another $10-15,000 a year at least for repairs, plus an-other $25,000 to keep our buildings clean and decent! I said "dues," but it would be better to call them stew-ardship. The offering to God of the Good Steward of the Gospel. We must remember that ours is a Church. Dues are only fit for sports clubs and societies. Here we must act as Disciples, Apostles of the Gospel, stewards, who contribute with their heart to keep the Church open and to transmit the illumination of Christ to the world around them. Apostle Paul is clear enough "So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Cor. 9: 7). It is a shame that our offering to God is so small and we expect the Parish council to work even harder in order to find funds and cover the expenses which should be covered by all of us.

Based on what I have mentioned, it is imperative that we become able to secure the money that will be needed to renovate the buildings. Beyond the personal responsibility of each one of us to increase our individu-al contribution to the Church, we keep looking at how else we can increase its income. We are considering whether the renewal and amelioration of the Community Hall may yield a higher regular income on an annual basis. We also look at whether it is financially wise to create a day care center in the Greek school area that will pay us a monthly rent. Moreover, it is beyond certainty that the renewal of our obsolete HVAC will reduce the annual heating costs by up to 50%.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, it is time for us to deal with this situation with courage and faith. We will proceed carefully after we first examine with wisdom and precision what must be done in the best interest of the Church. All of you will make decisions through the General Assemblies. But I do not want you to forget that it is God's House and that is why the Lord will not leave us unprotected and uncovered. He will be next to us at every step through the Powerful Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos Axion Estin. As the old adage says, "When God is with us, none is against us." We will exert our small effort and God will multiply it and in-crease it!

Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί,

Καθώς πλησιάζουν τα Αγια Χριστούγεννα επιθυμώ να επικοινωνήσω μαζί σας με λόγια παστρικά,

βγαλμένα μέσα από την καρδιά μου, τα οποία σας παρακαλώ να τα διαβάσετε με μεγάλη προσοχή. Τα λόγια αυτά τα άκουσαν όσοι ήρθαν στην τελευταία Γενική Συνέλευση και τώρα θα τα μελετήσετε όλοι σας. Η Αγία μας Εκκλησία είναι ο τόπος της σωτηρίας μας, ο τόπος μέσα στον οποίο καθημερινά ερχόμαστε πιο κοντά στο Θεό και Πατέρα. Γι’ αυτό και πρέπει να αναλογιζόμαστε την μεγάλη ευθύνη την οποία έχουμε όλοι για να παραδώσουμε στις επόμενες γενιές μία σφύζουσα ενορία, οικονομικά υγιή, γεμάτη παιδιά και μεγάλους που θα έρχονται να ακούσουν το λόγο του Θεού και να ξεδιψάσουν από την δροσερή πηγή της Ορθοδοξίας. Ακριβώς όπως την παραλάβατε από τους προηγούμενους.

Ο ρόλος του Ιερέα, σύμφωνα με το καταστατικό της Ελληνικής Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας στην Αμερική, δεν περιορίζεται μόνο στα πνευματικά αλλά συμπεριλαμβάνει και την επίβλεψη της καλής διαχείρισης της περιουσίας της εκκλησίας για το πνευματικό όφελος του λαού. Γι’ αυτό και ενδιαφέρομαι τόσο πολύ για τα κτίρια και το μέλλον του Ναού της Θεοτόκου. Γνωρίζετε όλοι σας και έχετε ενημερωθεί και στο παρελθόν για την σοβαρή και κακή κατάσταση των κτιρίων μας. Από αυτά η μεν κοινοτική αίθουσα και τα σχολεία είναι 50 χρονών, η δε εκκλησία είναι σχεδόν 100 χρονών, αφού χτίστηκε το 1923. Αισθάνομαι ότι δεν μπορούμε να κλείσουμε τα μάτια μας, δεν μας το επιτρέπει ο Θεός, και να μην κάνουμε το σωστό, δηλαδή την επισκευή και αποκατάσταση του Ναού.

Πολλές εκκλησίες γύρω μας τα τελευταία λίγα χρόνια ανανεώθηκαν και ωραιοποιήθηκαν. Ο Καθεδρικός, με το σύγχρονων προδιαγραφών hall, οι Ταξιάρχες με την αγιογράφηση, τα μαρμάρινα πατώματα και την κατασκευή παρεκκλησίου. Ο Άγιος Βασίλειος, με ασανσέρ, αγιογράφηση και επισκευή των κωδωνοστασίων και μεταλλική στέγη. Ο Ευαγγελισμός στο Woburn. Ο Αγιος Γεώργιος στο Lynn. Ο Άγιος Αθανάσιος με την αγορά αυτού του μεγάλου συγκροτήματος που έχει και σχολεία. Επίσης ο Άγιος Νεκτάριος όπου ολοκλήρωσαν την ανακαίνιση του ναού από την μεταλλική οροφή μέχρι τις κάτω αίθουσες και τώρα τελείωσαν και τις αγιογραφίες. Ο Αγιος Δημήτριος και η Αγία Αικατερίνη. Όλες οι εκκλησίες καλλωπίστηκαν και απέκτησαν σύγχρονες εγκαταστάσεις. Τώρα έφτασε η σειρά μας να πάρουμε ορισμένες σοβαρές αποφάσεις.

Ολοι καταλαβαίνουμε ότι το έργο το οποίο έχουμε μπροστά μας είναι όντως μεγάλο και θα χρειαστούν αρκετά χρήματα. Όμως δεν μας επιτρέπεται να μεταθέσουμε τα προβλήματα για την επόμενη γενιά γιατί τότε θα είναι πολύ χειρότερα. Με σχεδόν ομόφωνη απόφαση της Γενικής Συνελεύσεως αναθέσαμε σε μία σοβαρή εταιρεία μηχανικών να μας βγάλει σχέδια και να υποβάλει προτάσεις. Οτιδήποτε κι αν φτιάξουμε χρειάζονται σχέδια μηχανικών, διότι χωρίς αυτά δεν μπορούμε να πάρουμε ούτε ένα δολλάριο δάνειο από τις τράπεζες. Οι μηχανικοί θα μας απαλλάξουν και από μία άλλη πληγή η οποία πολλές φορές προκαλεί αντιπαράθεση μέσα στους κόλπους της εκκλησίας. Η πληγή αυτή είναι η γνώμη του καθενός από μας ξεχωριστά, που χωρίς να είμαστε μηχανικοί προτείνουμε ο καθένας αυτό που πιστεύουμε ότι είναι σωστό με αποτέλεσμα να μην μπορούμε να συνεννοηθούμε.

Αυτά που πρέπει να γίνουν είναι πολλά. Πρέπει να εξασφαλιστεί το σύνολο των κτιρίων και κυρίως του Ναού, από την εισροή των υδάτων η οποία έχει προκαλέσει εκτεταμένες ρωγμές στους τοίχους και στα πατώματα. Οι μηχανικοί το ονομάζουν προστατευτικό κάλυμμα (envelope) και είναι το πρώτο που πρέπει να αποκατασταθεί. Πρέπει να κάνουμε την εκκλησία μας και τους χώρους της προσιτούς σε άτομα με ειδικές ανάγκες. Να βάλουμε ασανσέρ και sprinklers για να ενισχύσουμε την πυρασφάλεια. Να αντικαταστήσουμε όλη την πρόσοψη του κοινοτικού κτιρίου που κοντεύει να πέσει. Να αποκαταστήσουμε με μόνιμο τρόπο την σκεπή του κοινοτικού κτιρίου με την προβληματική σχεδίαση. Να συνδέσουμε αρχιτεκτονικά με βυζαντινά στοιχεία την πρόσοψη του ναού με το κοινοτικό κτίριο ώστε να δημιουργηθεί ένα ενιαίο καλαίσθητο εκκλησιαστικό σύνολο.

Εμείς μετά την κατασκευή του νάρθηκα που έγινε πριν από 30-40 χρόνια δεν ασχοληθήκαμε με τίποτα. Ολ’ αυτά τα χρόνια μείναμε ανενεργοί αφήνοντας τον χρόνο και τον καιρό να φθείρει τα κτίρια. Καλύπταμε μόνο τα έξοδα από μια υποτυπώδη συντήρηση που έμοιαζε με μπαλώματα. Πως αλλοιώς να περιγράψει κανείς την επάλειψη για σειρά ετών των εξωτερικών τοίχων με σιλικόνη την στιγμή που ήταν γεμάτοι ρωγμές από τις οποίες έμπαινε στο εσωτερικό ο πάγος και τις μεγάλωνε; Η μόνη σοβαρή αντιμετώπιση που έγινε ήταν πρόσφατα όταν κάναμε αντικατάσταση της σκεπής του Ναού το 2017.

Τα έξοδα ενός μεγάλου κτιριακού συγκροτήματος σαν αυτό που έχουμε είναι μεγάλα. Τα ετήσια έξοδα μας υπερβαίνουν τις $500.000. Το parking μας εξασφαλίζει περί τα 2/5 του ποσού αυτού, δηλαδή $200.000. Τα υπόλοιπα πρέπει να εξοικονομηθούν από το Φεστιβάλ, κάποια γεύματα κατά τη διάρκεια του έτους, τα κεριά, και τέλος από δωρεές και την ετήσια συνδρομή σας.

Ας εξετάσουμε λοιπόν τα έσοδα αυτά από την αρχή. Το Φεστιβάλ που αποτελεί μία θαυμάσια πηγή εσόδων και καλύπτει περίπου το 1/5 ($100.000) του προϋπολογισμού, μετά από την εντυπωσιακή αύξηση των τελευταίων πέντε ετών, φαίνεται ότι έπιασε το μέγιστο. Οι λόγοι πολλοί, αλλά ο κύριος λόγος είναι ότι κάθε χρόνο έχουμε όλο και λιγότερους εθελοντές από τους ενορίτες. Οι μεγάλοι μεγαλώνουν και οι νεότεροι δεν έχουν πιά τον χρόνο ή δεν θέλουν να μπουν στην κουζίνα! Ετσι λοιπόν, τα καθαρά έσοδα είναι μικρότερα γιατί πληρώνουμε πλέον περισσότερο ξένο προσωπικό. Φαίνεται ότι αυτή η τάση θα αυξάνεται με την πάροδο των ετών.

Τα έσοδα από τα γεύματα, παρ’ όλη την φιλότιμη προσπάθεια εκείνων που τα διοργανώνουν, έχουν αρχίσει και υποφέρουν και αυτά από «γεροντάματα», δηλαδή έρχονται όλο και λιγότεροι συνδαιτημόνες. Οσο για τα κεριά της εκκλησίας, είναι μία πονεμένη ιστορία. Όταν πήγα πρώτη φορά στην εκκλησία στην Αμερική το 1985, το κερί είχε $1. Τριάντα τρία χρόνια αργότερα και ενώ οι αξίες των σπιτιών στο Somerville ανέβηκαν από τις $50-60.000 στο εκατομμύριο και πάνω, το κερί της εκκλησίας αποφέρει ακόμη στο Ναό έσοδο $1 ! Για το λόγο αυτό τα κεριά αποφέρουν κάθε χρόνο περίπου τα ίδια λεφτά δηλαδή γύρω στις $40.000. Αντίθετα, οι δωρεές προς την εκκλησία μας μειώνονται συνεχώς και από το 2015 που ήταν 75.000 $ κατέβηκαν προοδευτικά μέχρι το 2018 στις 33.000 $. Τα έσοδα του ναού από μυστήρια, γάμους δηλαδή και βαπτίσεις, ήτανε φέτος μόνο 800 $. Όμως αναρωτηθήκατε γιατί οι άλλες εκκλησίες έχουν πολύ περισσότερα μυστήρια; Τι είναι αυτό που τραβάει, που έλκει τα νέα ζευγάρια που έχουν δυναμική και μέλλον, να πάνε σε εκκλησίες οι οποίες είναι περιποιημένες, άριστα οργανωμένες, όμορφα διακοσμημένες με μάρμαρα και αγιογραφίες σύμφωνα με την παράδοση της εκκλησίας μας, και να κάνουν εκεί το γάμο τους, να βαφτίζουν και να μεγαλώνουνε εκεί τα παιδιά τους;

Απομένει να εξετάσουμε τα έσοδα από τη συνδρομή μας! Αυτά ανέρχονται σε $56.000 δηλαδή αποτελούν μόλις το 11% των εσόδων του Ναού! Αντιστοιχούν σε μόλις $250 ανά οικογένεια! Αναρωτηθήκατε ποτέ πόσα πληρώνουμε κάθε χρόνο μόνο για utilities, επισκευές και καθαριότητα; $80-85.000! Μάλιστα, $45.000 για γκάζι και ηλεκτρικό με τα πανάρχαια και ενεργοβόρα συστήματα μας που κοστίζουν άλλες $10-15.000 το χρόνο τουλάχιστον σε επισκευές, και άλλες $25.000 για να είμαστε καθαροί και ευπρεπισμένοι!

Είπα συνδρομή (dues) αλλά σωστότερο θα ήταν να την αποκαλέσω προσφορά (stewardship). Την προσφορά προς τον Θεό του Καλού Οικονόμου του Ευαγγελίου. Οφείλουμε να θυμόμαστε ότι εδώ είναι εκκλησία. Τα dues (συνδρομή) είναι μόνο για αθλητικούς συλλόγους και λέσχες. Εδώ πρέπει να υπάρχουν Μαθητές, Απόστολοι του Ευαγγελίου, stewards, που συνεισφέρουν με την καρδιά τους για να κρατήσουν ανοιχτή την Εκκλησία και να μεταδώσουν στους γύρω τους ανόθευτο το φως του Χριστού. Ο Απόστολος Παύλος είναι σαφής: «Ιλαρόν δότην -χαρωπόν δωρητήν- αγαπά ο Θεός» (Β’ Κορ. 9:7). Είναι κρίμα να είναι η προσφορά μας στον Θεό τόσο μικρή και να περιμένουμε από το εκκλησιαστικό συμβούλιο να δουλέψει ακόμη πιο σκληρά απ’ ότι δουλεύει για να καλύψει τα έξοδα που θα έπρεπε να καλύπτουμε μόνοι μας.

Με βάση αυτά που σας ανέφερα διαφαίνεται πλέον επιτακτική η ανάγκη να μπορέσουμε να εξασφαλίσουμε τα χρήματα που θα χρειασθούν για την ανανέωση των κτιρίων. Πέρα από την προσωπική ευθύνη του καθενός από μας για την αύξηση της ατομικής προσφοράς του στην Εκκλησία, εξετάζουμε πως αλλοιώς μπορούμε να αυξήσουμε τα εισοδήματα της. Εξετάζουμε αν η ανανέωση και ωραιοποίηση της Κοινοτικής Αίθουσας μπορεί να αποφέρει μεγαλύτερο σταθερό εισόδημα σε ετήσια βάση. Επίσης εξετάζουμε αν είναι οικονομικά σύμφορη η δημιουργία βρεφονηπιακού σταθμού (Day care center) ο οποίος θα μας πληρώνει ενοίκιο στο χώρο του σχολείου. Ακόμη, είναι πέρα για πέρα σίγουρο ότι η ανανέωση του πεπαλαιωμένου HVAC θα περικόψει έως και κατά 50% τα ετήσια έξοδα θέρμανσης.

Αδελφοί μου, έφθασε η ώρα μετά τους πανηγυρισμούς των 100 χρόνων να αντιμετωπίσουμε κατάματα και με θάρρος την κατάσταση. Θα προχωρούμε προσεκτικά αφού προηγουμένως εξετάζουμε με σοφία και ακρίβεια το τι πρέπει να γίνεται με γνώμονα το συμφέρον του Ναού. Τις αποφάσεις θα τις παίρνετε εσείς όλοι μέσα από τις Γενικές Συνελεύσεις. Όμως, δεν θέλω να ξεχνάτε ότι πρόκειται για τον Οίκο του Θεού και γι’ αυτό ο Κύριος δεν θα μας αφήσει απροστάτευτους και ακάλυπτους. Θα είναι μαζί μας σε κάθε βήμα μέσα από την Φοβερά Προστασία της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου Αξιον Εστίν που είναι και η Κτιτόρισσα του Ναού. Οπως έλεγαν οι παλιοί «Όταν ο Θεός μεθ’ ημών, ουδείς καθ’ υμών». Εμείς θα βάζουμε λίγη προσπάθεια, ο Θεός θα την πολλαπλασιάζει και θα την αυξάνει.

My Dearest Parishioners,

We have started a new Ecclesiastical year with a very uplifting spiritual event. The arrival of the myrrh-streaming icon of Panagia Kardiotissa to our church. On Friday, August 10th, we had a Paraklesis

with a presentation, and on Saturday, August 11th, a Liturgy and Anointing of the faithful on both days.

I would like to congratulate Fr. Konstantinos for bringing the Myrrh streaming Icon of Panagia Kardiotis-sa. Many faithful were touched by this great experience. These type of spiritual events elevate our

Christian faith and spirit. Father wants to do more spiritual events. Thank you Father, we greatly ap-

preciate it. I would also like to thank Domenica, Emanuel Sabau and Amberin-Evgeniya Pasha for their effort

to project the event in the lower hall, and those who came and helped during the two day event,

Presvytera Anna, Bill, Cookie, Diane, Guy, Louise, Petro, Taso, Phillipa, Georgia Eleni, Sevi, Katrina, Vic-toria, Eleni, and Arthur, and Georgia Ververis and Diane for staying late to clean the kitchen.

Our Greek School is off to a great start. We have thirty-two students in our Wednesday and Sat-

urday programs. This is the most students we have had in our program in a long time. The number keeps growing every year.

I would like to thank Domenica and the Educational ministry for organizing a nice back to school event. The Greek School program and policies where presented and our principal and teachers were

introduced. They talked about their philosophy and teaching style.

On Sunday, October 28th, our students had a great Oxi Day program with poems, songs and dancing. It was a very inspiring performance. Congratulations to our kids, teachers and parents. I

would like to thank Kosta Mamakos for teaching our kids dancing with a lot of enthusiasm, inspiration

and discipline. I would like to congratulate our new principle, Vasiliki Lagogiannis, and welcome back our returning teacher, Georgia, and our new teachers, Andria and Eleni.

As we are approaching the end of the calendar year we will do a review of the events of this

year. This has been a very busy and very productive year in many aspects. 1) The Centennial Anniversary Album was finally published and presented to the Community on Sunday

August 26.

2) After long and challenging negotiations the parking lot agreement has been signed with the CHA. It is in effect now, and the annual rent has been increased from $164,000 to $204,000. This is another mile-

stone financial achievement.

3) The GA has voted in 2016, to hire an Accounting firm to review the financials for 2015 and 2016. I am pleased to inform you that, Rucci, Barbado and Falzole, CPA firm was hired and the review has been

completed. We have received a draft of the report and Cookie is working to finalize it. It will be present-

ed on the next GA. It’s the first time in over 20 years that the church financials have been reviewed by an outside company.

4) The PC is working to finalize the Endowment fund of $104,000. The money is currently in a money

market account earning 2.22%. This year was also full of events. We started the New Year with a New Years Eve party and net

profit of $7500, Karnavali with Lykeion Ellinidon $800, Bakaliaro Luncheon $3,500, Palm Sunday Lunch-

eon $3,400, Parishioner of the Year Luncheon $430, Gyro Day $6,500, Art Beat $600, Several Hall Rent-als, preparation of 5 memorial coffee hours $965, Panagia’s Luncheon $1000. The extraordinary event,

the Festival. Festival Revenue 186,000 and net profit $104,000. This was another amazing festival. The entire community working together for the biggest fundraising event of the year. Unbelievable results.

Congratulation and thank you to everyone who has helped and supported our festival.

Thank you Father for your prayers and all your help. Congratulations to the Co-chair persons Andy and Diane for a fantastic job organizing and running this festival. Congratulations and thank you to

all the team captains and every member of their team. You all have done an outstanding Job. The


food line did a record $75,000. Thank you Stellio and your entire team for an outstanding job preparing

the food in the summer and cooking for 10 days before and during the festival. Thank you Kostas and all the members of the gyro team for another outstanding year $46,000 and 4k gyros sold. Thank you Guy

and your bar team, you did $24,500, another great year. Thank you Sevi and all the ladies, the pastry did

$13,500, another great sold out year. Thank you Maria and your Loukoumades and frappe team. Another record year $8,600. All net profits. Thank you Domenica and Louise for a great job with the Ad Book, over

$11,000. Thank you Mike and your team with the Kid’s Activities, $1938. Thank you Presbytera with the

Religious booth and all your help with the food line. Thank you Richard with for the Church tours and the concert. Thank you Cookie for being at the church 24/7 watching the church, creating and printing all the

signs, counting all the money three times and being there to help with anything that was needed. Thank

you Taso for assisting with the money. Thank you Lizza for your help in the preparation of the festival food, the add book and the money. Thank you Mike for setting up the lights, the credit card machines,

the internet connections and being there any time we were calling you with a new problem. Thank you

Demetri Dalianis for being there any time we needed help with the electrical system and save us when the fuse died. A special thanks to Dora and all the Philoptochos ladies for another great year. They help pre-

paring the food all summer, bake all the pastries and serve at the food lines and the pastry booth all days. Outstanding commitment and work. I apologize if I have missed anyone.

Furthermore The Dormition Table is operating twice a month, financially independent.

The financials of the church are slowly improving. As of October 17th, the church’s net worth was $623,900. Our expenses are growing fast too.

We now need to turn our attention to the future. We all are aware of the deterioration of the build-

ings and church. The need to restore them is great. Fr. Konstantinos and the Parish Council have the vi-sion to renovate our buildings and our church. The RED team is working diligently to create a well-

developed plan to build the foundation for our church’s next fifty years. A special GA has approved the

hiring of Spencer, Sullivan and Vogt Engineering firm to prepare a detailed plan for renovating the build-ings and our church. The RED team had the first meeting and a presentation of the preliminary plans. This

is the start of a very challenging and critical period for our church both financially and spiritually.

As we are renovating, we need to find ways to fill our church by attracting new parishioners and families, especially those with children. We will be moving gradually into stewardship. An outreach Minis-

try has been established and a Stewardship Ministry will be created soon. These Ministries, will create

plans and co-ordinate their efforts to bring new parishioners and families into the church. The plan to renovate the Church and building is a major project. It’s going to require a large

amount of money. What do we need to succeed?

The elements for a successful project are: a vision, a well-designed and realistic plan, a good man-agement team, good execution, control and lastly funding. Father has a great vision for the renovations of

the building and the church which is shared by all RED team and PC members. The RED team has hired

the perfect engineering firm for this project. It was very obvious when they presented preliminary plans to us at our first meeting. We were all impressed by the detail of their work. They are creating a very good

and realistic plan. I also believe we have a great plan and vision. Father Konstantinos has been the driving

force for this project for years. We have an excellent RED team with Andy as chairperson, an Executive Council with leadership, and very supportive and hardworking PC members. The engineering firm will

lead us in this project. They have a lot of experience and expertise renovating old Churches. They reno-vated St. Vasilios church in Peabody and they were highly recommended. We all share the vision for this

project and we are committed to succeed. They provide the plan, costs for all elements of the project,

hire firms to do the work and supervise and control the entire project. All this for a fee. How will the project be funded? A % of the cost will come from the cash we have. Church has

$250-300k that can be used. A substantial % from Fundraising, we will need to be creative, methodical and persistent. The last part over 50% or more from a loan. To secure a loan we need to demonstrate the ability to repay it. We need to create an effective business

plan to substantiate this ability.



Having signed the improved parking lot lease helps a lot with the $40k increase and 4% annually. We

have increased the rents on 7 Central Street by $275 a month. We are still under market value. We need to generate additional revenue from other areas, such as.

1) Hall Rental Increase revenue. We plan to create a world-class community center with catering capabili-

ties. Instead of simply renting the hall, we will share the revenue with catering companies and keep all the bar revenue. There are many opportunities. There are few halls for events and especially with ample park-

ing. A new sprinkler system will allow us to eliminate the fire supervision cost. We will get a full liquor li-

cense. This will eliminate the need to get temporary liquor licenses. The temporary liquor license triggers the need for a police details and fire detail at all of our events. We may not need to always have a police

detail especially for smaller events. The elimination of the fire department supervision and the reduction of

the police details will reduce the hall rental costs and will allow us to rent it more frequently and generate a much higher revenue.

2) Day care center revenue. Day care centers are in great and increasing demand. We have instructed

our engineering team to incorporate a day care facility into the plans. We are searching to find companies who are going to lease our facilities and they will run the day care program.

These two areas could give us yearly $100k in revenue. We also need to review all the church expenses and evaluate what can be done to increase efficiencies.

Important areas for review, Energy Audit and efficiency, Utilities, Insurance and Repairs-maintenance.

We have a great need for better financial management. I am pleased to announce that a Finance Ministry has been created and it had its first meeting. The Ministry members are, Fr. Konstantinos, Chair-

person Diane Karavitis, Cookie Caulfield, Taso Dres, Bill Galatis, Christina Karogianis, John Stefanou and

yours truly. I would like to thank them all for their commitment and dedication to this important and criti-cal ministry.

This project is a huge commitment. It is very critical to the spiritual and financial health of our

church and community. We all need to work together as one team to finish this project. Our priest, the president, all the members of the PC, all members of the ministries and all the parishioners need to put

aside our personal differences and work together for the common goal, to build a stronger church for our

children and grandchildren. Let’s create an environment where they can preserve our faith, language, val-ues, principles and heritage and create better foundations for our church’s next 50 years. We can do it.

I am very proud of what we have accomplished this year. We are a small community but very ac-

tive and productive. Our achievements are the result of Protopresbyter Fr. Maneta’s vision, and leader-ship, the dedication of all hard working Parish Council members, all the ministries of the church and its

members and all the parishioner who have worked unselfishly together and have donated

their time, treasures and talents.

Thank you All very much for your dedication, hard work, commitment and love.

Πολυαγαπημένοι μου ενορίτες,

Έχουμε ξεκινήσει την νέα εκκλησιαστική χρονιά με ένα πολύ αναζωογονητικό πνευματικό γεγονός. Την άφιξη της εικόνας στην εκκλησία μας της Παναγίας της Καρδιώτισσας που αποδίδει μύρο. Την

Παρασκευή, 10 Αυγούστου, είχαμε μία παρακληση και την παρουσίαση της εικόνας, και το Σάββατο, 11

Αυγούστου, Θεία Λειτουργία και την άλειψη των πιστών με μύρο και τις δύο μέρες. Θα ήθελα να συγχαρώ τον π. Κωνσταντίνο πού έφερε την Εικόνα της Παναγίας της Καρδιώτισσας.

Πολλοί πιστοί άγγιξαν αυτή την μεγάλη εμπειρία. Αυτά τα πνευματικά γεγονότα αυξάνουν την χριστιανική πίστη και το χριστιανικό πνεύμα. Ο π. Κωνσταντίνος θέλει να κάνει περισσότερες πνευματικές εκδηλώσεις. Τον ευχαριστούμε, και το εκτιμούμε πολύ.


Θα ήθελα επίσης να ευχαριστήσω την Ντομένικα, Emanuel Sabau και Amberin-Evgeniya Pasha για την

προσπάθειά τους να προβάλουν την εκδήλωση στην κάτω αίθουσα και όσους ήρθαν και βοήθησαν κατά τη διάρκεια της διήμερης εκδήλωσης, Πρεσβυτέρα Aννα, Bill, Cookie, Δήμητρα , Guy, Λουίζ, Πέτρο, Τάσο,

Φίλιππα, Γεωργία, Ελένη, Σεβαστή, Κατρίνα, Βικτώρια, Ελένη και Θανάση, καθώς και τη Γεωργία Βερβέρη

και την Δήμητρα, οι οποίες έμειναν έως αργά για να καθαρίσουν την κουζίνα. Το Ελληνικό μας Σχολείο έχει ξεκινήσει σπουδαία. Έχουμε τριάντα δύο (32) μαθητές στα

προγράμματα της Τετάρτης και του Σαββάτου. Αυτοί είναι οι περισσότεροι μαθητές που είχαμε στο

πρόγραμμα μας εδώ και πολλά χρόνια. Ο αριθμός συνεχίζει να αυξάνεται κάθε χρόνο. Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω την Ντομένικα και την Εκπαιδευτική Διακονια για την οργάνωση μιας ωραίας

εκδήλωσης “πίσω στο σχολείο’’, όπου παρουσιάστηκε το πρόγραμμα, η πολιτική, και οι εκπαιδευτικοί μας.

Οι εκπαιδευτικοί μίλησαν για τη φιλοσοφία και το στυλ διδασκαλίας τους. Την Κυριακή, 28 Οκτώβρη, οι μαθητές μας είχαν ένα ωραίο πρόγραμμα της Ημέρας του “Oχι” με ποιήματα, τραγούδια και χορό. Ήταν

μία πολύ εντυπωσιακή γιορτή. Συγχαρητήρια στα παιδιά, τους δασκάλους και τους γονείς. Θα ήθελα να

ευχαριστήσω τον Kώστα Μαμάκο για τη διδασκαλία χορού στα παιδιά, με πολύ ενθουσιασμό, έμπνευση και πειθαρχία. Θα ήθελα να συγχαρώ την νέα μας Διευθύντρια Βασιλική Λαγογιάννη, και να καλωσορίσω

τήν επιστρέφουσα δασκάλα Γεωργία, και τις νέες δασκάλες μας ΄Αντρια και Ελένη. Καθώς πλησιάζουμε στο τέλος του Ημερολογιακού έτους, θα κάνουμε μια ανασκόπηση των

εκδηλώσεων του τρέχοντος έτους. Το 2018, ήταν πολύ απασχολημένο και πολύ παραγωγικό έτος.

1) Το Λεύκωμα της επετείου των Εκατό Ετών δημοσιεύθηκε τελικά και παρουσιάστηκε στην Κοινότητα την Κυριακή 26 Αυγούστου.

2) Μετά από μακροχρόνιες και δύσκολες διαπραγματεύσεις έχει υπογραφεί η συμφωνία στάθμευσης

αυτοκινήτων με το CHA. Το ετήσιο ενοίκιο αυξήθηκε από $ 164.000 σε $ 204.000. Αυτό είναι ένα άλλο ορόσημο και οικονομικό επίτευγμα.

3) Η Γ.Σ ψήφισε το 2016 να προσλάβουμε μια εταιρεία λογιστικής για να αναθεωρήσει τα οικονομικά για

το 2015 και το 2016. Είμαι στην ευχάριστη θέση να σας ενημερώσω ότι η εταιρεία Rucci, Barbado και Fal-zole, CPA προσλήφθηκε και η αναθεώρηση ολοκληρώθηκε. Λάβαμε ένα σχέδιο της έκθεσης και η Cookie

χρήματα είναι σήμερα σε έναν λογαριασμό χρηματαγοράς που κερδίζει 2.22 %.

Αυτό το έτος ήταν επίσης γεμάτο με εκδηλώσεις. Ξεκινήσαμε το Νέο Έτος με ένα Πρωτοχρονιάτικο πάρτι και καθαρό κέρδος $7500, το Καρναβάλι με το Λύκειον των Ελληνίδων $800 δολλάρια, το Γεύμα

Βακαλιάρου $ 3,500, το Γεύμα της Κυριακής των Βαίων $3,400 δολάρια, το Γεύμα της Ενορίτισσας της

Όλη η κοινότητα συνεργάζεται για τη μεγαλύτερη διοργάνωση συλλογής κεφαλαίων του έτους. Απίστευτα

αποτελέσματα. Συγχαρητήρια και ευχαριστώ όλους όσους βοήθησαν και υποστήριξαν το φεστιβάλ μας. Eυχαριστούμε τον π. Κωνσταντίνο για τις προσευχές και για όλη του τη βοήθεια. Συγχαρητήρια

στους συμπροεδρεύοντες Andy και Diane για μια φανταστική δουλειά διοργάνωσης και λειτουργίας του

φεστιβάλ. Συγχαρητήρια και ευχαριστίες σε όλους τους αρχηγούς ομάδων και σε κάθε μέλος της ομάδας

τους. Όλοι έχετε κάνει μια εξαιρετική δουλειά. Η γραμμή τροφίμων έσπασε ρεκόρ πωλήσεων $75.000.

Ευχαριστούμε τον Στέλιο και όλη την ομάδα της κουζίνας για την εξαιρετική δουλειά της προετοιμασίας

φαγητού ολο το καλοκαίρι και για το μαγείρεμα για 10 ημέρες πριν και κατά τη διάρκεια του φεστιβάλ.

Ευχαριστώ τον Κώστα και όλα τα μέλη της ομάδας γύρου για μια άλλη εξαιρετική χρονιά, $ 46.000

και 4k πωλήσεις του γύρου. Ευχαριστώ τον Guy και την ομάδα του μπαρ, κάνατε 24.500 δολάρια, για

ακόμη ένα σπουδαίο έτος. Ευχαριστώ την Sevi και όλες τις κυρίες της ομάδας γλυκισμάτων, κανατε

$13.500 δολάρια, ένα ακόμα μεγάλο ποσό. Ευχαριστούμε την Μαρία και την ομάδα στους Λουκουμάδες

και τον Φραπέ. Ένα άλλο ρεκόρ αξίας $ 8.600. Όλα καθαρά κέρδη. Ευχαριστώ την Ντομένικα και την

Louise για μια εξαιρετική δουλειά με το βιβλίο διαφημίσεων, πάνω από $ 11.000. Ευχαριστούμε τον Mike

και την ομάδα με τις Δραστηριότητες των παιδιών, $1,938.


Ευχαριστούμε την Πρεσβυτέρα με το θρησκευτικό περίπτερο και όλη τη βοήθειά της στο

φεστιβαλ. Ευχαριστουμε τον Richard για την συναυλία. Ευχαριστούμε την Χρυσοθέμη (Παξιμάδη) για το γεγονός ότι βρίσκεται στην εκκλησία 24 ώρες το 24ωρο, 7 ημέρες την εβδομάδα, παρακολουθώντας την εκκλησία, δημιουργώντας και εκτυπώνοντας όλες τις επιγραφές, μετρώντας όλα τα χρήματα τρεις φορές,

και βοηθώντας με οτιδήποτε χρειαζόμαστε. Ευχαριστώ τον Τάσο για την βοήθεια με τα χρήματα. Ευχαριστώ Λίζζα για την βοήθεια προετοιμασίας των φαγητών του Φέστιβαλ, του διαφημηστικού βιβλίου

και το μέτρημα χρημάτων. Ευχαριστώ τον Mike για την εγκατάσταση των φώτων, των μηχανών των

πιστωτικών καρτών, των συνδέσεων στο διαδίκτυο και την παρουσία του οποιαδήποτε στιγμή τον καλούμε με ένα νέο πρόβλημα. Ευχαριστούμε τον Δημήτρη Νταλιάνη που είναι εδώ κάθε φορά που χρειαζόμαστε

βοήθεια με το ηλεκτρικό σύστημα και μας έσωσε όταν έπεσε η ασφάλεια του γύρου. Μια ιδιαίτερη

ευχαριστία για τη Ντόρα και όλες τις κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου για ένα ακόμα σπουδαίο έτος. Βοήθησαν στην προετοιμασία του φαγητού όλο το καλοκαίρι, εψησαν όλα τα αρτοσκευάσματα και σέρβιραν στις γραμμές

φαγητού και στον πάγκο ζαχαροπλαστικής, όλες τις ημέρες. Εξαιρετική δέσμευση και εργασία. Ζητώ

συγγνώμη αν έχω ξεχάσει κανέναν. Επιπλέον ο Πίνακας Συντάξεων λειτουργεί δύο φορές το μήνα, οικονομικά ανεξάρτητος. Με όλες

αυτές τις οικονομικές δραστηριότητες, τα οικονομικά της εκκλησίας βελτιώνονται σιγά-σιγά, καθώς τα έξοδά μας αυξάνονται γρήγορα. Στις 17 Οκτωβρίου, η καθαρή οικονομική αξία ήταν $623.900 δολάρια.

Τώρα πρέπει να στραφούμε προς το μέλλον. Όλοι γνωρίζουμε την άσχημη κατάσταση των κτιρίων και της

εκκλησίας. Η ανάγκη για την αποκατάστασή τους είναι μεγάλη. Ο π. Κωνσταντίνος και το Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο έχουν το όραμα να ανακαινίσουν τα κτίρια και την εκκλησία μας. Η ομάδα RED εργάζεται

επιμελώς για να δημιουργήσει ένα καλά αναπτυγμένο σχέδιο για την οικοδόμηση της βάσης για τα

επόμενα πενήντα χρόνια της εκκλησίας μας. Μια ειδική Γ.Σ. έχει εγκρίνει την πρόσληψη της εταιρείας Spencer, Sullivan και Vogt Engineering για την προετοιμασία ενός λεπτομερούς σχεδίου ανακαίνισης των

κτιρίων και της εκκλησίας μας. Η ομάδα RED είχε την πρώτη συνάντηση και παρουσίαση των

προκαταρκτικών σχεδίων. Αυτή είναι η αρχή μιας πολύ δύσκολης και κρίσιμης περιόδου για την εκκλησία μας τόσο οικονομικά

όσο και πνευματικά. Καθώς ανακαινούμε, πρέπει να βρούμε τρόπους να γεμίσουμε την εκκλησία μας

προσελκύοντας νέους ενορίτες και οικογένειες, ειδικά εκείνους με παιδιά. Θα προχωρήσουμε σταδιακά στην οικονομική επιστασία (Stewadship). Έχει δημιουργηθεί η Διακονία Outreach και σύντομα θα

δημιουργηθεί η Διακονια Οικονομικής Επιστασίας. Αυτές οι διακονίες θα δημιουργήσουν προγράμματα και

θα συντονίσουν τις προσπάθειές τους για να φέρουν νέους ενορίτες και οικογένειες στην εκκλησία μας. Το σχέδιο ανακαίνισης της εκκλησίας και του κτιρίου είναι ένα μεγάλο έργο. Θα χρειαστεί ένα

μεγάλο χρηματικό ποσό. Τι χρειαζόμαστε για να πετύχουμε; Τα στοιχεία για ένα επιτυχημένο έργο είναι:

ένα όραμα, ένα καλά σχεδιασμένο και ρεαλιστικό σχέδιο, μια καλή ομάδα διαχείρισης, καλή εκτέλεση,

έλεγχος και, τέλος, χρηματοδότηση. Ο π. Kωνσταντίνος έχει ένα υπέροχο όραμα για τις ανακαινίσεις του

κτιρίου και της εκκλησίας που μοιράζονται όλα τα μέλη της RED και τα μέλη του εκκλησιαστικού

Συμβουλίου. Η ομάδα RED έχει προσλάβει την τέλεια μηχανική εταιρεία για αυτό το έργο. Ήταν πολύ

προφανές όταν μας παρουσίασαν τα προκαταρκτικά σχέδια στην πρώτη μας συνάντηση. Μας

εντυπωσιάστηκαν από τις λεπτομέρειες της δουλειάς τους. Δημιουργούν ένα πολύ καλό και ρεαλιστικό

σχέδιο. Πιστεύω επίσης ότι έχουμε ένα όραμα. Ο πατέρας Κωνσταντίνος υπήρξε η κινητήρια δύναμη του

έργου αυτού εδώ και χρόνια. Έχουμε μια εξαιρετική ομάδα RED με τον Andy ως πρόεδρο. Ένα εκτελεστικό

συμβούλιο με ηγετικές ικανότητες και πολύ υποστηρικτικά και εργατικά μέλη στο ΔΣ. Έχουμε προσλάβει

μια καλή μηχανική εταιρεία για να μας οδηγήσει σε αυτό το έργο. Έχουν μεγάλη εμπειρία και τεχνογνωσία

για την ανακαίνιση των παλαιών εκκλησιών. Έχουν ανακαινίσει την εκκλησία του Αγίου Βασιλείου στο Pea-

body. Όλοι συμμεριζόμαστε το όραμα για αυτό το έργο και δεσμευόμαστε να επιτύχουμε.

Η εταιρεία μηχανικών που έχουμε προσλάβει θα παράσχει το σχέδιο, το κόστος για όλα τα στοιχεία του έργου, θα προσλάβει επιχειρήσεις για να κάνουν το έργο και θα επιβλέψει και ελέγξει ολόκληρο το έργο. Όλα αυτά με αμοιβή. Πώς θα χρηματοδοτηθεί το έργο; Ένα ποσοστό του κόστους θα προέρχεται από τα μετρητά που

έχουμε. Η Εκκλησία έχει 250-300k που μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν. Ένα σημαντικό ποσοστό από έναν


έρανο για κεφάλαια. Το τελευταίο μέρος πάνω από 50% ή περισσότερο θα ειναι δάνειο. Για να

εξασφαλίσουμε ένα δάνειο πρέπει να επιδείξουμε την ικανότητα αποπληρωμής του δανείου. Πρέπει να δημιουργήσουμε ένα αποτελεσματικό επιχειρηματικό σχέδιο για να τεκμηριώσουμε τη δυνατότητα

αποπληρωμής του δανείου. Έχοντας υπογράψει τη βελτιωμένη μίσθωση πάρκινγκ βοηθά πολύ με $40,000

αύξηση ενοικίου και 4% ετήσια αναπροσαρμογή. Επίσης απο τα αυξημένα ενοίκια στο 7 Central. Έχουμε αυξήσει τα ενοίκια κατά 275 δολάρια το μήνα φέτος. Βρισκόμαστε ακόμα κάτω από την αξία της αγοράς.

Πρέπει να δημιουργήσουμε πρόσθετα έσοδα από άλλους τομείς, όπως π.χ.

1) Αύξηση εσόδων απο Ενοικίαση Αίθουσας. Σχεδιάζουμε να δημιουργήσουμε ένα παγκόσμιας κλάσης κοινοτικό κέντρο με δυνατότητες εστίασης. Αντί να ενοικιάσουμε απλά την αίθουσα, θα μοιραστούμε τα

έσοδα με εταιρείες εστίασης και θα διατηρήσουμε όλα τα έσοδα από το μπαρ. Υπάρχουν πολλές ευκαιρίες.

Δεν υπάρχουν πολλές αίθουσες για εκδηλώσεις και ειδικά με μεγάλη δυνατότητα στάθμευσης αυτοκινήτων στο Somerville. Ένα σύστημα ψεκάσματος νερού θα μας επιτρέψει να εξαλείψουμε το

κόστος επιτήρησης απο την Πυροσβεστική Υπηρεσία. Θα λάβουμε μια μόνιμη άδεια για την κατανάλωση

αλκοόλ. Αυτό θα εξαλείψει την ανάγκη λήψης προσωρινών αδειών για τα αλκοολούχα ποτά. Η προσωρινή άδεια για τα αλκοολούχα ποτά ενεργοποιεί την ανάγκη για εποπτεία της αστυνομίας σε όλες τις

εκδηλώσεις μας. Μπορεί να μην χρειαζόμαστε πάντα εποπτεία της αστυνομίας ειδικά για μικρές εκδηλώσεις. Αυτά θα μειώσουν το κόστος μίσθωσης χώρου και θα μας επιτρέψει να ενοικιάσουμε την

αίθουσα πιο συχνά και να παράγουμε πολύ υψηλότερα έσοδα.

2) Τα έσοδα του κέντρου μέριμνας. Τα κέντρα ημερήσιας φροντίδας βρίσκονται σε μεγάλη και αυξανόμενη ζήτηση. Έχουμε δώσει εντολή στην ομάδα μηχανικών να ενσωματώσει μια εγκατάσταση

ημερήσιας φροντίδας στα σχέδια. Ψάχνουμε να βρούμε εταιρείες που πρόκειται να χρησιμοποιήσουν τις

εγκαταστάσεις μας και τρέχουν το πρόγραμμα ημερήσιας φροντίδας. Αυτοί οι δύο τομείς θα μπορούσαν να μας δώσουν ετήσια έσοδα ύψους 100.000 δολαρίων.

Πρέπει επίσης να επανεξετάσουμε όλα τα έξοδα εκκλησίας και να αξιολογήσουμε τι μπορεί να γίνει για να

αυξηθεί η αποτελεσματικότητα. Σημαντικοί τομείς για ανασκόπηση, ενεργειακός έλεγχος και αποδοτικότητα, ασφαλιστικές δαπάνες και έξοδα επισκευών-συντήρησης.

Έχουμε μεγάλη ανάγκη για καλύτερη δημοσιονομική διαχείριση. Είμαι στην ευχάριστη θέση να

ανακοινώσω ότι έχει δημιουργηθεί η Διακονία και είχε την πρώτη συνάντηση. Τα μέλη είναι, ο π. Κωνσταντίνος, πρόεδρος η Diane Karavitis, Cookie Caulfield, Tάσος Ντρες, Βασίλης Γαλάτης, Χριστίνα

Καρογιάννη, Γιάννης Στεφάνου και Βαγγέλης Κεχρής. Θα ήθελα να τους ευχαριστήσω όλους για τη

δέσμευσή τους και την αφοσίωσή τους σε αυτήν την σημαντική και κρίσιμη διακονία. Αυτό το έργο είναι μια τεράστια δέσμευση. Είναι πολύ κρίσιμο για την πνευματική και οικονομική

υγεία της εκκλησίας και της κοινότητας μας. Όλοι πρέπει να συνεργαστούμε ως μία ομάδα για να το

ολοκληρώσουμε. Ο ιερέας μας, ο πρόεδρος, όλα τα μέλη του ΔΣ, όλα τα μέλη των διακονίων και όλοι οι ενορίτες πρέπει να ξεπεράσουν τις προσωπικές μας διαφορές και να συνεργαστούν για τον κοινό στόχο,

να οικοδομήσουμε μια ισχυρότερη εκκλησία για τα παιδιά και τα εγγόνια μας. Ας δημιουργήσουμε ένα

περιβάλλον όπου μπορούν να διατηρήσουν την πίστη, τη γλώσσα, τις αξίες, τις αρχές και την κληρονομιά μας και να δημιουργήσουμε καλύτερα θεμέλια για τα επόμενα 50 χρόνια της εκκλησίας μας. Μπορούμε να

το κάνουμε.

Είμαι πολύ περήφανος για αυτό που καταφέραμε φέτος. Είμαστε μια μικρή κοινότητα αλλά πολύ δραστήρια και παραγωγική. Τα επιτεύγματά μας είναι το αποτέλεσμα του όραματος και της ηγεσίας του

π. Κωνσταντίνου, την αφοσίωση όλων των σκληρά εργαζόμενων μελών του Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου, όλων των Διακονιών της εκκλησίας και των μελών αυτών και όλων των ενοριτών που εργάστηκαν ανιδιοτελώς

μαζί και δώρισαν το χρόνο, τους θησαυρούς και τα ταλέντα τους.

Σας ευχαριστούμε πολύ για την αφοσίωσή σας, τη σκληρή δουλειά, τη δέσμευση και την αγάπη σας.

SUNDAY SCHOOL REPORT


We are happy to welcome back all of our students and teachers to Sunday School this

year and happy to welcome two new teachers, Stavroula Eliadis and George Eliadis. We know this is going to be a great new school year and hope to welcome more students.

As a reminder students should be in church at the start of the liturgy and sitting with their classes at 9:30am. The children should be participating in the liturgy by listening to the

epistle and Gospel, reciting the Creed and Lord´s Prayer and receiving Communion. So

please make every effort to have the children in church on time. Thank you.

Once again our High Goal class will be working on the Oratorical Festival. This is a wonderful ex-

The annual Christmas pageant will be held on Sunday, December 23rd following the morning lit-

Είμαστε στην ευχάριστη θέση να καλωσορίσουμε όλους τους φοιτητές και καθηγητές

μας στο Κατηχητικό σχολείο φέτος και να καλωσορίσουμε δύο νέους δασκάλους, την Σταυρούλα Ηλιάδη και τον Γιώργο Ηλιάδη. Γνωρίζουμε ότι πρόκειται για μια σπουδαία νέα

σχολική χρονιά και ελπίζουμε να καλωσορίσουμε περισσότερους μαθητές.

Ως υπενθύμιση, οι μαθητές πρέπει να είναι στην εκκλησία κατά την έναρξη της

λειτουργίας και να καθίσουν με τις τάξεις τους στις 9:30 π.μ. Τα παιδιά πρέπει να συμμετέχουν στη

λειτουργία, ακούγοντας την επιστολή και το Ευαγγέλιο, απαγγέλλοντας τον Απόστολο και την Προσευχή του Κυρίου και να λάβουν Θεία Κοινωνία. Επομένως, παρακαλούμε να καταβάλλετε κάθε προσπάθεια να

έχετε εγκαίρως τα παιδιά στην εκκλησία. Ευχαριστώ.

Για άλλη μια φορά η τάξη του High Goal θα συμμετάσχουν στο Ρητορικό Φεστιβάλ. Αυτή είναι

μια θαυμάσια εμπειρία και έτσι σας ζητάμε να ενθαρρύνετε όλα τα παιδιά σας να έρθουν. Εδώ θα δείτε τα

φετινά θέματα.


Η ετήσια εκδήλωση των Χριστουγέννων θα λάβει χώρα την Κυριακή, 23 Δεκεμβρίου, μετά την πρωινή λειτουργία. Εάν θέλετε να βοηθήσετε με οποιονδήποτε τρόπο, ενημερώστε μας.

PHILOPTOCHOS REPORT

ΚΟΙΝΟΤΗΣ


Dear Parishioners,

On behalf of the members of the Philoptochos Board, I would like to thank you all for your constant support to our efforts to help our needy fellow citizens in any possible way.

Our first general assembly will take place on November 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.in the upper hall of our church. Please consider participating and supporting our mission. On November 25th, we are cele-brating our patron saint, Saint Katherine, and there will be artoklasia after the Divine Liturgy.

The Dormition Family Table, continues to offer hot meals to every citizen, in Somerville, every other Wednesday of each month, at the lower hall of our church. The board members and our ladies cook, serve, and clean after, with the professional contribution of our cook Mr. Stellios Sfikas. On Wednesday, November 21st, we will be cooking a Thanksgiving dinner for our fellow citizens in need. Please come, join us to help people, and share with us the joy of giving.

On December 2nd, 2018, we are having the Christmas luncheon, and we look forward to seeing you all, in order to help us meet the needs we set forth in our recent board meeting. As always we will be selling traditional pastries and tsourekia prepared by us at the church, with the unlimited and highly appreciated support of our fellow parishioners, Mr. Dionysios Kourafalos, and Mr. Stellios Sfikas. All the ladies that partici-pate in the preparation of the delicious goods give their very best to achieve another sold out bake sale!

Please consider joining our Philoptochos association, and continue to offer us your love and support. You are mostly appreciated by all of us, and especially by numerous unknown people who need us to make this world a better place for them. Thank you!

Το τραπέζι της αγάπης συνεχίζει να προσφέρει, καθε δεύτερη Τετάρτη κάθε μήνα, μαγειρευμένα φαγητά, παρασκευασμένα από τα χέρια των κυριών του συλλόγου μας, με την φροντίδα, και την γνώση τoυ αγαπημένου μας Στέλιου Σφήκα.

Την παραμονή της εορτής των Ευχαριστιών, Τετάρτη 21 Νοεμβρίου, θα προσφέρουμε γεύμα στους συνανθρώπους μας που τόσο το χρειάζονται! Παρακαλούμε θερμά να ενωθείτε μαζί μας, για να μοιραστούμε μαζί την χαρά του να δίνεις στους συνανθρώπους μας οταν χρειάζονται βοήθεια.

Στις 2 Δεκεμβρίου 2018, θα πραγματοποιήσουμε το καθιερωμένο Χριστουγενιάτικο τραπεζι και θα διατεθούν προς πώληση παραδοσιακά γλυκά και τσουρέκια, που θα παρασκευάσουμε στην εκκλησία μας. Τέλος, θα θέλαμε να ευχαριστήσουμε όλους και όλες εσάς από καρδιάς που με την συμπαράσταση, και την ευγενική σας βοήθεια, συμβάλετε στην πραγματοποίηση των στόχων της Φιλόπτωχου μας. Greetings from Omiros Greek School! As the new director of the school, I am very excited to

announce that our Greek school family has grown over the years. Not too long ago, the school had a very small number of students’ attendance. This academic year though, the numbers went up, and

we hope that this number will continue to rise.

As students grow in number, more teachers got hired as well. Four teachers will be teaching the

Omiros Greek School students; Mrs. Eleni Giannaki, Ms. Georgia Nikolakakos, Ms. Vasiliki Lagogiannis & Ms. Andria Nicodemou. The children will not only be taught the Greek language, religion, culture and history,

but also a combination of music and theater. Students will be very creative at the performances, so stay

tuned.

Lastly, we also have some volunteers; Mr. Kosta Mamakos will be teaching our students Greek dances; we would like to thank Kosta for his time donation and welcome him on board. In addition, we

would like to welcome and thank the president of the Education Ministry, Mrs. Domenica Karavitakis, as

well as the Parish council and the PTO committee for their great support.

Χαιρετισμούς από το Ελληνικό Σχολείο “Όμηρος”! Ως ή νέα διευθύντρια του σχολείου,

είμαι πολύ ενθουσιασμένη να σας ανακοινώσω ότι η ελληνική σχολική οικογένεια μας έχει αυξηθεί μέ τα χρόνια.

Όχι πολύ καιρό πριν, το σχολείο είχε πολύ μικρό αριθμό μαθητών. Αυτό το ακαδημαϊκό έτος,

ωστόσο, οι αριθμοί αυξήθηκαν και ελπίζουμε ότι αυτός ο αριθμός θα συνεχίσει να αυξάνεται.

Καθώς ο αριθμός των μαθητών αυξήθηκε, προσλήφθήκαν και περισσότεροι εκπαιδευτικοί.

Τέσσερις δάσκαλοι θα διδάσκουν τους μαθητές του ελληνικού σχολείου “Ομηρος”. Η κ. Ελένη Γιαννάκη, η δ. Γεωργία Νικολάκακου, η δ. Βασιλική Λαγογιάννη και η δ. Άνδρια Νικοδήμου.

Τα παιδιά δεν θα διδάσκονται μόνο την ελληνική γλώσσα, τη θρησκεία, τον πολιτισμό και την

ιστορία της Ελλάδας, αλλά και ένα συνδυασμό μουσικής και θεάτρου. Οι μαθητές θα είναι πολύ

δημιουργικοί στις παραστάσεις, οπότε μείνετε συντονισμένοι.

Τέλος, έχουμε και αρκέτους εθελοντές. Ο κ. Κώστας Μαμάκος που θα διδάσκει στους

μαθητές τους ελληνικούς χορούς. Θα θέλαμε να τον ευχαριστήσουμε γιά τη δωρεά του χρόνου

του καί να τον υποδεχτούμε στο σχολείο μας.

Our Greek School “Omiros” is off to a great start! Over 30

students are in our classrooms, eager to learn and enjoy their time together. It is such a great pleasure to see them every week and we

thank all the parents that have entrusted us with their children’s

Greek education. On October 12th we held our first Back-to-School Night organized by the Greek School, with the collaborative effort of

the Parish Council and all our ministries that support our children: the Educational Committee, GOYA,

PTO, Sunday School. The purpose of the event was for the parents to meet the teachers, and the Greek dance teacher, Mr. Mamakos, learn about the curriculum, visit the classrooms, and experience

what their children are living while attending our Greek School. During the night our teachers shared

their experience and educational philosophy. In their own words:

Vasiliki Lagogiannis: “Give your children one of the most incredible gifts; Greek literacy benefits cognitive skills and provides educational advantage at school and further education. My goal, as a teacher, is to motivate students learn the Greek language, culture and history, through meaningful interaction and activities. The learning process will take place in a safe and positive learning environ-ment, where students feel comfortable to express themselves and interact with their peers. My teach-ing philosophy is based on student-centered learning, which moves students from passive receivers of information to active participants in their own discovery and learning process”.

Georgia Nikolakakos: “…I believe it is a great privilege, and our great obligation too, for every child to learn the Greek language, at a level where they can effortlessly communicate with friends and fam-ily in Greece, but also knowing the history and culture, so they can feel Greece is not just a vacation place but their second home. A home that they will be fully equipped to return back to, if they wish to do so. Hellenism, history and mythology, are not there just to teach us about facts and dates. Hellen-istic studies are a great tool to teach us about respect, humanity, philanthropy, friendship and further help your children shape their thoughts and personalities. It is now my time to work with you and support your children in not missing out on any of these.”

Eleni Giannakis: “…I used to live in Athens Greece, where I was working for many years as a coor-dinator of training programs and as a teacher of Greek language to foreigners, mostly migrants, sup-porting them integrate into the Greek society. Last year I moved to U.S. as a migrant myself and started working in Greek schools of Boston area. I think I am very fortunate because although I left my country behind, I came to a place that you can meet Greek people everywhere, people who try to keep their Greek identity alive. Not only that but I was also given the opportunity to work with their children, the new genera-tion. As Greek and as a teacher I will be pleased with my work if I can help them, of course, to learn Greek but furthermore to dis-cover the beauty of the Greek language and culture, to understand how the Greek civiliza-tion has influenced the modern world and eventually, realize how important it is to pre-serve what we have inherited.”

Το Ελληνικό μας Σχολείο "Ομήρος" ξεκινάει με πολλή αγάπη και

μεράκι! Πάνω από 30 μαθητές βρίσκονται στις αίθουσες διδασκαλίας μας, πρόθυμοι να μάθουν και να απολαύσουν το χρόνο τους μαζί.

Είναι μεγάλη χαρά να έχουμε μαζί μας τα παιδιά κάθε εβδομάδα και

ευχαριστούμε όλους τους γονείς που μας εμπιστεύτηκαν την ελληνική παιδεία των παιδιών τους. Στις 12 Οκτωβρίου πραγματοποιήσαμε για

πρώτη φορά την εκδήλωση «Επιστροφή στα θρανία» που διοργάνωσαν οι δάσκαλοι του σχολείου με τη

συνεργασία του Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου και όλων των διακονιών της εκκλησίας μας που υποστηρίζουν τα παιδιά μας: την Εκπαιδευτική Επιτροπή, GOYA, PTO, το Κατηχητικό Σχολείο. Σκοπός της εκδήλωσης

ήταν οι γονείς να συναντήσουν τους δασκάλους, τον δάσκαλο ελληνικών χορών κύριο Μαμάκο, να μάθουν για το πρόγραμμα σπουδών του σχολείου, να επισκεφθούν τις αίθουσες διδασκαλίας και να βιώσουν το πρόγραμμα των παιδιών τους. Κατά τη διάρκεια της εκδήλωσης οι δάσκαλοι μοιράστηκαν

την εμπειρία και την εκπαιδευτική φιλοσοφία τους. Με τα δικά τους λόγια:

Βασιλική Λαγογιάννη: “Δώστε στα παιδιά σας ένα από τα πιο απίστευτα δώρα. H Ελληνική παιδεία

ωφελεί τις γνωστικές ικανότητες και παρέχει εκπαιδευτικό πλεονέκτημα για τη σχολική και περαιτέρω

εκπαίδευση των παιδιών σας. Ο στόχος μου, ως εκπαιδευτικός, είναι να ενθαρρύνω τους μαθητές να μάθουν την ελληνική γλώσσα, τον πολιτισμό και την ιστορία, μέσω ουσιαστικών αλληλεπιδράσεων και

δραστηριοτήτων. Η διαδικασία εκμάθησης πραγματοποιείται σε ένα ασφαλές και θετικό μαθησιακό

περιβάλλον, όπου οι μαθητές αισθάνονται άνετα να εκφράζονται και να αλληλεπιδρούν με τους συμμαθητές τους. Η φιλοσοφία διδασκαλίας μου βασίζεται στην εκμάθηση με επίκεντρο τον μαθητή, η

οποία προτρέπει τους μαθητές από παθητικούς δέκτες γνώσεων σε ενεργούς συμμετέχοντες στην

διαδικασία ανακάλυψης και εκμάθησης”.

Γεωργία Νικολακάκος: "Πιστεύω ότι είναι ένα μεγάλο προνόμιο και μεγάλη υποχρέωσή μας για κάθε

παιδί να μάθει την ελληνική γλώσσα σε ένα επίπεδο όπου να μπορεί να επικοινωνήσει εύκολα με τους φίλους και την οικογένειά του στην Ελλάδα αλλά και

να γνωρίζουν την ιστορία και τον πολιτισμό , ώστε να αισθάνονται ότι η Ελλάδα δεν

είναι απλώς ένας τόπος διακοπών αλλά το δεύτερο σπίτι τους. Ένα σπίτι που θα είναι πλήρως εξοπλισμένα για να επιστρέψουν, αν το επιθυμούν. Ο Ελληνισμός, η ιστορία

Γνωρίστε τους δασκάλους του Ελληνικού Σχολείου μας

Vasiliki Lagogiannis - Principal Ms. Vasiliki Lagogiannis was born and raised in Peloponnese, Greece. She gradu-ated from the University of Patras, Department of Education. Since moving to

the US, she started as a teacher’s assistant at J. Henry Higgins Middle School,

District of Peabody Public Schools, working with students in special education; she also taught Greek as a second language at St. Vasilios Greek School in Pea-

body, MA and at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Ipswich MA. Vasiliki has been certified in professional training in SPED. In addition, she attends the MATSOL conferences

(Massachusetts Association of Teachers of Speakers of Other Languages) every year. Currently, she

teaches English, Social Studies and Science to ELL students (English as Second Language) at the J. Hen-ry Higgins Middle School, while pursuing her Masters Degree in Special Education, with a major in Mod-

erate Disabilities.

Βασιλική Λαγογιάννη – Διευθύντρια

Η κα Βασιλική Λαγογιάννη γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στην Πελοπόννησο. Αποφοίτησε από το Τμήμα Εκπαίδευσης του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών. Από τότε που μετακόμισε στις ΗΠΑ, εργάστηκε ως βοηθός

σας να διαμορφώσουν τις σκέψεις και τις προσωπικότητές τους. Τώρα είναι καιρός

να συνεργαστώ μαζί σας και να υποστηρίξετε τα παιδιά σας να μην χάσουν αυτές τις αξίες ".

Ελένη Γιαννάκη: "Ζούσαμε στην Αθήνα, όπου εργαζόμουν εδώ και πολλά χρόνια ως συντονίστρια εκπαιδευτικών προγραμμάτων και ως δασκάλα της ελληνικής

γλώσσας σε αλλοδαπούς, κυρίως μετανάστες, υποστηρίζοντάς τους να ενταχθούν

στην ελληνική κοινωνία. Πέρυσι εγκαταστάθηκα στις ΗΠΑ ως μετανάστης και άρχισα να δουλεύω στα ελληνικά σχολεία της περιοχής της Βοστώνης. Νομίζω ότι είμαι πολύ τυχερή γιατί αν και εγκατέλειψα την

πατρίδα μου, ήρθα σε ένα μέρος όπου μπορεί κανείς να συναντήσει τον ελληνικό λαό παντού,

ανθρώπους που προσπαθούν να κρατήσουν ζωντανή την ελληνική τους ταυτότητα. Όχι μόνο αυτό, αλλά και μου δόθηκε η ευκαιρία να συνεργαστώ με τα παιδιά τους, τη νέα γενιά. Ως Ελληνίδα και ως δασκάλα

θα χαρώ αν μπορώ να βοηθήσω τα παιδιά μας να μάθουν ελληνικά αλλά και να ανακαλύψουν την

ομορφιά της ελληνικής γλώσσας και του πολιτισμού για να καταλάβουν πώς ο ελληνικός πολιτισμός επηρέασε τον σύγχρονο κόσμο και τελικά να συνειδητοποιήσουν πόσο σημαντικό είναι να διατηρήσουμε

αυτό που έχουμε κληρονομήσει. "

Άνδρια Νικοδήμου: « Ξεκινώντας από μια σειρά από έννοιες και αφηγήσεις κάθε φορά, τα παιδιά

διερευνούν την ελληνική γλώσσα μέσα από μουσικά και κινητικά παιχνίδια, ρυθμικά και μελωδικά

κρουστά, οπτικά σύμβολα, " ηχητικές ιστορίες ", ηχητικά τοπία μέσα από θεατρικά έργα και τραγούδια. Η διαδικασία βασίζεται σε διεπιστημονικές δραστηριότητες βασισμένες στο κύριο πρόγραμμα σπουδών κάθε

τάξης, που στοχεύουν στην ανάπτυξη - και προέρχονται από δημιουργική σκέψη.» «... μέσα από αυτές

ΚΟΙΝΟΤΗΣ

Andria Nicodemou - Teacher

Andria is a multifaceted musician and teaching artist from Cyprus. She is a graduate

from Corfu University in Classical Percussion and has received her Masters of Music in Contemporary Improvisation from the New England Conservatory, in Boston. Andria’s

teaching experience varies and it’s a blend of various art forms, informed and influ-

enced by the Dalcroze and Reggio Approach. Her teaching approach is an ‘open-ended’ play where movement, theatricality and sound are equally important. It’s a sharing pro-

cess of tools focusing on developing the creative thinking. As an early childhood educa-

tor, she encourages and guides children to develop their imagination and expressivity, their confidence in collaborating and sharing with others, and becoming free to express from an internal

source developing their personal language. She has been giving interactive workshops and taught in res-

idencies at private and public schools around MA, including the Preparatory Department of New England Conservatory and the Greek Orthodox Cathedral School, where she developed a curriculum, teaching the

Greek language, history and culture through interactive activities. Andria is the co-founder of Thread En-

semble, who gives interactive performances and it’s an awarded ensemble by the City of Boston and Boston Cultural Council. She has worked in diverse interdisciplinary art projects in Europe, USA and Can-ada and she made her appearance as a speaker at the Change Maker Conference in Boston and at the

Ignite conference for creative community builders at Lesley University.

συνεδρίες του MATSOL (Ένωση Καθηγητών Μασσαχουσέτης, για την εκμάθηση της δεύτερης γλώσσας) κάθε χρόνο. Τα τελευταία χρόνια διδάσκει Αγγλικά, Ιστορία και Χημεία σε μαθητές τρίτης γυμνασίου (την

Αγγλική ως δεύτερη γλώσσα) στο δημόσιο Γυμνάσιο του J. Henry Higgins, ενώ παράλληλα κάνει τις

μεταπτυχιακές της σπουδές στην Ειδική Αγωγή.

Eleni Giannakis - Teacher

Mrs. Eleni Giannakis was born in Chalkida, Greece. She lived and worked in Athens

and since last year she moved to Boston with her family. Eleni studied philosophy, pedagogy and psychology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She

has worked for about seventeen years in the field of vocational training, coordinating

and teaching in educational programs aiming to help foreigners who lived in Greece to learn the Greek language as well as Greek culture. In addition, she was tutoring

Greek school students. Since moving to Boston, she has been working as a Greek-

language teacher in Greek schools in the area.

Ελένη Γιαννάκη – Δασκάλα

Η κα Ελένη Γιαννάκη γεννήθηκε στη Χαλκίδα. Ζούσε και εργαζόταν στην Αθήνα ώσπου πριν ένα χρόνο

μετακόμισε στη Βοστώνη μαζί με την οικογένειά της. Η Ελένη σπούδασε Φιλοσοφία, Παιδαγωγική και

Ψυχολογία στο Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών. Εργάστηκε για περίπου δεκαεπτά χρόνια στον τομέα της επαγγελματικής κατάρτισης με αντικείμενο τον συντονισμό και τη διδασκαλία σε

εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα που αποσκοπούσαν στο να βοηθήσουν αλλοδαπούς που ζούσαν στην Ελλάδα

να μάθουν την ελληνική γλώσσα και να εξοικειωθούν με την ελληνική κουλτούρα. Παράλληλα ασχολήθηκε με ιδιαίτερα μαθήματα σε Έλληνες μαθητές. Από τότε που μετακόμισε στη Βοστώνη,

εργάζεται ως δασκάλα σε ελληνικά σχολεία της περιοχής.

Άντρια Νικοδήμου – Δασκάλα

Η Άντρια είναι μία πολυδιάστατη μουσικός και καλλιτεχνικός παιδαγωγός από την Κύπρο. Είναι απόφοιτος

του Ιονίου Πανεπιστημίου της Κέρκυρας, στα κλασσικά κρουστά, με μεταπτυχιακό στον σύγχρονο αυτοσχεδιασμό, από το New England Conservatory (NEC) της Βοστώνης. Η διδασκαλική της εμπειρία

ποικίλλει και είναι ένα μείγμα διαφόρων μορφών τέχνης, επηρεασμένη από τις Dalcroze και Reggio

μεθοδολογίες. Η διδακτική της προσέγγιση είναι ένα ανοικτό παιχνίδι, όπου η κίνηση, η θεατρικότητα και ο ήχος είναι εξίσου σημαντικά. Είναι μια διαδικασία κοινής χρήσης εργαλείων που εστιάζουν στην

ανάπτυξη της δημιουργικής σκέψης. Ως εκπαιδευτικός της πρώιμης παιδικής ηλικίας, ενθαρρύνει και

Καθοδηγεί διαδραστικά σεμινάρια και έχει διδάξει σε ιδιωτικά και δημόσια σχολεία της Μασαχουσέτης, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του Προπαρασκευαστικού Τμήματος του New England Conservatory και του

Ελληνικού Ορθόδοξου Καθεδρικού σχολείου, όπου ανέπτυξε το πρόγραμμα διδασκαλίας, διδάσκωντας

την ελληνική γλώσσα, την ιστορία και τον πολιτισμό μέσω διαδραστικών δραστηριοτήτων. Η Άντρια είναι συνιδρύτρια του μουσικού συνόλου Thread Ensemble, που δίνει διαδραστικές μουσικές παραστάσεις και

είναι ένα βραβευμένο σύνολο από το Πολιτιστικό Συμβούλιο της Βοστώνης. Έχει εργαστεί σε διάφορες

πολυδιάστατες παραστάσεις στην Ευρώπη, τις ΗΠΑ και τον Καναδά και έκανε την εμφάνισή της ως ομιλήτρια στο συνέδριο Change Maker στη Βοστώνη και στο συνέδριο Ignite για δημιουργικούς

δημιουργούς της κοινότητας στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Lesley. Είναι παραλήπτης της χορήγησης των

Πολιτιστικών Υπηρεσιών του Υπουργείου Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού της Κύπρου για τη διοργάνωση τριήμερου διεθνούς συνεδρίου στο Ευρωπαϊκό Πανεπιστήμιο.

Georgia Nikolakakos – Teacher

Ms. Georgia Nikolakakos was born and raised on the island of Crete. She holds a degree

in Accounting and Marketing from the First Institute of Vocational Training in Heraklion, Crete. During her studies she was working as an after school activity teacher in a pri-

vate primary school for five years. Ms. Georgia moved to Boston, MA six years ago. Dur-

ing her stay here, she attended a private college where she got her second degree in Hospital Sterilization Technician. Ms Georgia also holds a CPR certification for adults and

infants. She had been a Greek Language Teacher at the Annunciation Cathedral Greek

School in Brookline, MA for two years and at Omiros Greek school four years. Ms. Geor-gia is an inspiring teacher that enhances classroom productivity and creates a favorable

learning environment for all her students.

Γεωργία Νικολακάκος - Δασκάλα

Η κα Γεωργία Νικολακάκος γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στο νησί της Κρήτης. Είναι απόφοιτος σχολής

Λογιστικής, Μάρκετινγ και Διοίκησης Επιχειρίσεων από το Πρώτο Ινστιτούτο Επαγγελματικής

Κατάρτησης στο Ηράκλειο, Κρήτης. Κατά την διάρκεια των σπουδών της εργάστηκε σε ιδιωτικό σχολείο ως δασκάλα δημιουργικής απασχόλησης για πέντε χρόνια. Η Γεωργία μετακόμισε στη

Βοστώνη πριν απο έξι χρόνια. Κατά την παραμονή της, παρακολούθησε ιδιωτικό κολέγιο στο Brook-

line, Μασσαχουσέτης, όπου πήρε το δεύτερο πτυχίο της ως Τεχνικός Αποστείρωσης Χειρουργικών Εργαλείων. Η Γεωργία κατέχει επίσης πιστοποίηση CPR για ενήλικες και βρέφη. Έχει διδάξει στο ελληνικό σχολείο του Καθερδικού Ναού Βοστώνης για δύο χρόνια και στο ελληνικό σχολείο ‘Ομηρος

για τέσσερα χρόνια. Η Γεωργία, ως εκπαιδευτικός, εμπνέει και ενισχύει τη παραγωγικότητα της τάξης και δημιουργεί ένα ευνοϊκό περιβάλλον μάθησης για όλους τους μαθητές της.

PRESVYTERA’S ORGANIC MARGARINE 1.5 cup organic coconut oil (REFINED)

1 cup organic virgin olive oil

1 cup water

2 Tbsp organic sunflower liquid lecithin (AMAZON)

2 Tbsp organic lemon juice

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp organic turmeric (for color)

Put everything in blender for 1-2 minutes until mixture thickens like mayonnaise. Pour in

containers and store in refrigerator. Lenten and Healthy.

ΟΡΓΑΝΙΚΗ ΜΑΡΓΑΡΙΝΗ ΝΗΣΤΙΣΙΜΗ ΠΡΕΣΒ. ΑΝΝΑΣ 1.5 κούπα οργανικό coconut oil (REFINED)

1 κούπα οργανικό ελαιόλαδο

1 κούπα νερό

2 κουταλιές σούπας οργανική υγρή λεκιθίνη από ηλιόσπορο (AMAZON)

2 κουταλιές σούπας οργανικό ζουμί λεμονιού

1/2 κουταλιά γλυκού αλάτι

1/4 κουταλιά γλυκού οργανικό κουρκουμά (turmeric) γιά χρώμα

Τα χτυπάτε όλα στο μπλέντερ για 1-2 λεπτά και μόλις γίνει κρέμα, το αδειάζετε σε δοχείο και το

φυλάτε στο ψυγείο. Είναι καλύτερο και από βούτυρο.

PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR DUES, YOUR CHURCH NEEDS THEM!! If you have not already paid your 2017 or 2018 dues, please make arrangements to send your pay-ment to the church office as soon as possible. The Parish needs to meet its financial obligations The 2018 dues are the same as the 2017.

Family $ 350.00

Single $ 300.00

Seniors $ 150.00

If you would like to sponsor a coffee hour after Church, please contact the Church

Office. Coffee hours do not have to be only in memory of deceased loved ones.

Two or more families could also join together and sponsor a coffee hour.

You might want to consider hosting a coffee hour in honor of a family member’s

birthday, name day, wedding, anniversary, graduation, promotion, retirement, and beginning

of fall, end of the winter, an early spring…..or “just because!” If you want the

Parish Council to prepare the coffee hour for you, please contact the Church of-

fice for the different rates that are applicable depending upon what food you

would like served.
