St John Ambulance NSW (St John) is proud to announce local Emu Plains resident, Stephen Green, has been recognised for dedicating a remarkable 12 years of valued and profi cient voluntary service to the organisation.

Mr Green received an esteemed Service Medal of the Order at the St John 2015 Annual Awards Ceremony, held over the weekend at Sydney University.

This year 62 volunteers received a Service Medal – a cohort that has collectively provided 1,375 years of service, and dedicated at minimum 81,420 hours of duty.

Based on tradition inherited through St John’s proud historical roots that date back 130 years, Service Medals are awarded to volunteers after 12 years of service, and for every fi ve years thereafter.

St John Commissioner, Didier Moutia, said to receive a Service Award was a testament to a volunteer’s commitment to gaining a high level of fi rst aid expertise, and their ongoing care for the health and safety of the NSW community.

“To be recognised for a profi cient year of service with St John is an outstanding achievement. Annually, volunteers must complete advanced fi rst aid re-accreditation to ensure they are fully trained in the most up-to-date medical techniques, re-certify their CPR skills and complete a minimum of 60 duty hours of service,” Commissioner Moutia said.

“I love being and working with young children” said McCarthy Catholic College, Year 11 student Angelica Calder, when I interviewed her at Mud Puddles Cottage, Long Day Care and Pre School, at Emu Plains. MCC Year 11 student Janaya Roberts, enjoying work placement at Orchard Hills Pre School, expressed a similar sentiment “I love connecting with young children”. Angelic and Janaya are studying Early Childhood and Care at McCarthy Catholic College Trade Training Centre. They and their TTC Year 11 colleagues in Automotive, Hairdressing, Hospitality, Metals and Engineering, Electrotechnology, Brick and Block, Carpentry and Plumbers are part of a developing approach which combines ‘hands on’ trade education with the HSC. McCarthy has forged strong reciprocal links with a large range of Nepean and Western Sydney businesses.

Angelica especially enjoys ‘seeing young children’s smiles and laughter’ and ‘getting to know each child’. However, the greatest challenge Angelica experiences is ‘knowing what kids want if they don’t use words’. Mud Puddles Cottage has lived up to its excellent local reputation and been most welcoming of Angelica and similar work placement students; staff members have been

particularly supportive. Angelica feels ‘like I belong here’. Much of Angelica’s successful work placement may be attributed to MCC TTC Early Childhood and Care teacher Janet Tawadros and the thorough preparation provided in the college’s excellent facilities. Janet has long involvement in the early childcare industry and been the Director of two Child Care Centres. Above all Angelica loves being ‘wanted and needed by kids’!

Janaya and Angelica both aspire to complete a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care and to eventually progress to primary teaching. However, Janaya ‘loves coming to work’ at Orchard Hills Pre School; her block work placement has enhanced her regular Wednesday commitment. Janaya expressed her greatest enjoyment in ‘playing, making things, conversations and reading’. However, Janaya’s practical experience has taught her more about ‘keeping children on track’ and how to be ‘supportive, especially when children have separation anxiety’. Both centres demonstrate a colourful creativity and secure environments full of children’s art work, exciting displays, dynamic activity and supportive staff and MCC students!

Death and LifeThere’s no quicker way to slam the brakes on a conversation than to

ask ‘Have you thought about your death lately?’ If you’re not sure, try it out! And yet death is the one thing we’re all sure of in life. Well, that and taxes.

Just the other day a friend and colleague of mine, Ivan, was diagnosed with a serious tumour. It’s serious because it could lead to death. He’s not that old, he’s energetic, and he’s got people around him who love him and would deeply miss him. I’m sure you know someone whose got that sort of news too, maybe even you yourself. And we react strongly to it because we know the natural connection between sickness and death.

But what if we thought about our death a bit more. What diff erence would it make? What would we do diff erently? What would we say a stronger yes to, and likewise, what would we say no to?

A guy named Paul saw Jesus alive again after Jesus had died (He was called Saul then, in Acts 9:1-19). In the years afterward he was reminded about death all too often. He was often beaten up, jailed, and nearly drowned. But do you know what he said in the face of all that? ‘To live is Christ, to die is gain’ (Philippians 1:21). What he was saying was that he’d thought about his death and now how he was going to live. And so he made a clear choice about what he said yes to, and what he’d say no to. He was going to trust Jesus’ off er for free and true life before he died, and the full experience of it after he died.

In an email the other day Ivan, that friend I told you about said the same thing about the possibility of his death, ‘To live is Christ, to die is gain’.

Have you ever thought about your death? It doesn't have to be gloomy, in fact, it can be life changing.

Most of us take our lungs for granted, but sometimes they tell you something is wrong and action should be taken to have them checked.

18th November 2015 is World COPD Day and the Lung Foundation is raising awareness of the prevalence and impact of COPD. Pharmacies throughout the Nepean area will be conducting free lung tests on this day.

One in seven Australians, 40 years or older has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) without knowing it – which is something to think about.

COPD is the umbrella term for diseases including Emphysema, Chronic Bronchitis and Chronic Asthma which cannot be cured or reversed, but there is strong medical evidence to show that early diagnosis, combined with self-management strategies including Pulmonary Rehabilitation at the early stages of the disease can reduce the burden of COPD.

Symptoms for an individual with COPD tend to come on gradually over years.

Breathlessness may lead those with the condition to cut back on physical activities. This gradual decline continues until simple daily activities like showering, dressing or even making a cup of tea, become almost impossible.

Should you be breathlessness, have a cough that won’t go away, have phlegm production, or walking from the shops to

your car an endurance event, than have it checked out. The sooner you can be treated the better.

John Ruttle who has lived in Emu Heights for the past 44 years has lived with COPD for the last decade. I did not believe in going to a doctor. In 2005, after 12 months of getting breathlessness, couldn’t walk 100 metres, I decided to go to my GP. I was sent to a specialist and was diagnosed with COPD. They found that my breathing was obstructed and the cells in my lungs were starting to become blocked.

Once diagnosed, I did a Pulmonary Rehabilitation course at the Nepean Hospital.

The course includes exercises, how to live with your condition and what lifestyle changes you need to do.

To keep myself active, I became the President of the Lung Support Group and also a NSW Advocate for the CPAG team to the Lung Foundation.

Over the past twelve months my health has deteriorated and now need to take oxygen more regularly; my medications have also been changed.

People with COPD also get anxiety and depression and other medical problems. So if you do have the symptoms shown above, have them checked with your GP. Don’t let it go too long.

Last month I spent three days at Westfi eld Penrith promoting AD/HD Awareness Month. Shopping centres tend to bring out the worst in children and parents. Tired and harried parents. Tired, hungry, and overwhelmed children. It can be a volatile mix involving frustration, yelling, smacking, put-downs, and threats of abandonment. I’ve seen adult temper tantrums of extraordinary magnitude.

So, as I go to Westfi eld on the occasions when I am promoting the work that I do, I go with some trepidation about what I will see, hear, and feel. Well, this time I was most pleasantly surprised. On quite a few occasions I saw children who were very upset, having a moment. And how did the parents respond? They stopped to give their child a hug and a kiss. It was that simple. It was heart-warming. The parents realised that their child wasn’t giving them a hard time, they were having a hard time.

I heard Dr Justin Coulson speaking on the radio the other week. He does very good work and has a website called “Happy Families”. He provided an interesting analogy. If your child could not swim and fell into a swimming pool, what would you do? Would you yell at her, and tell her how stupid she is for falling in? No, you would jump into the pool and save her. And then what would you do? You would teach her how to swim. And that act of learning to swim can take quite a long time, involving much patience, practice and repetition - conquering fear, and celebrating achievements.

Children’s behaviour is the same. They are not giving YOU a hard time. Kids are little. They are learning how to manage themselves and how to navigate this big, scary, and wonderful world. They need us to help make things better, and to guide them how to manage their emotions and actions. And they need this, from us, over and over and over again. It’s our job to be the bigger, stronger, wiser, and kind person in the relationship (Circle of Security) and to teach our kids to go forward with courage and care.

And please know this, it is OK for you to ask for and receive help to be the best parent you can be. We are all in this together.

The annual National Energy Australia SwimSAFER week is once again around the corner, this year running from the 22nd to the 28th of November, and is as relevant as ever before. The recently released Royal Life Saving 2015 National Drowning Report reveals that, tragically, drowning is still the biggest cause of accidental death in Australian children under 5. There was also an alarming 30% increase in drowning deaths in children aged 0 to 4, with a total of 26 deaths in this age group (compared to 20 in the previous year), and over half (54%) happened in swimming pools.

Furthermore, more drowning deaths (37%) occurred in NSW than in any other state of territory.

Each year, hundreds of Australian families have a child presented to emergency rooms after an immersion accident. For every child drowning death there are three to four more children admitted to hospital as a result of a non-fatal drowning incident.

Almost one quarter of those children admitted will experience some form of permanent brain damage resulting in lifelong disabilities. A further ten children will be presented who do not require further hospitalisation, but had a close call. The statistics are alarming, so what can we do to make our children safe?

Swim Australia advise that while we cannot ensure our children are ever completely safe around water, we can make them SAFER. The R added to the word safe represents the Risks presented by water. Swim Australia initiated the EnergyAustralia SwimSAFER program to raise awareness and provide education to caregivers and children alike on how easily children can drown, and what steps can be implemented to prevent such tragedies. National Energy Australia SwimSAFER week aims to convey this message by reinforcing the SwimSAFER layers of protection – Be Aware, Be Secure, Be Confi dent, Be Prepared – through a presence at selected Learn To Swim schools, posters, online and social media campaigns, educational materials, CPR buddies, in lesson safety programming and media attention.

2015 Coo-ee March Re-Enactment

On October 10, 1915, the original Coo-ee recruitment march left Gilgandra with 26 marchers. On November 12, they arrived in Sydney with 263 marchers.

The march was a way of increasing recruits to fi ght for King and Country in the Great War. To commemorate the 100 year anniversary of this famous march, a re-enactment will take place, again beginning at Gilgandra, before fi nishing in Sydney on November 11 (Remembrance Day).

Local residents are being encouraged to support the 2015 Coo-ee March Re-enactment by lining the streets as they pass through the district.

On Saturday November 7, the march will make its way from Glenbrook to Emu Plains and then to Penrith. At 10:00am, they will be at Lennox Bridge in Glenbrook, followed by the Old School House in Emu Plains at 11:00am. It will then makes its way to High Street in Penrith at 12:30pm, Memory Park at 12:45pm and the Penrith Paceway at 1:30pm.

the Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation recently held a fundraising night at the Emu Plains Sports Club in Leonay to celebrate providing Emu Heights resident Joshua Farr, who suff ers from Cerebral Palsy, with a new manual wheelchair to assist in his daily living requirements. Guests were treated to a delicious two course dinner for both children and adults.

A raffl e was held, with prizes including over $500 worth of Waterford Brookside glasses and a framed and signed 2015 Penrith Panthers jersey.

Mayoral Statement - Airport UpdateThe Western Sydney Airport draft Environmental Impact

Statement (EIS) has been released for public exhibition by the Federal Department of Infrastructure and Development.

The public exhibition period closes on Friday 18 December 2015"Last month we opened the EIS for the fi rst time like everyone

else so I can’t comment on specifi c details. But I can assure you, ever since the airport was announced, we’ve been speaking to both State and Federal Governments on a whole range of issues we believe relate to an airport. We have also been actively pushing for the opportunities an airport can bring.

I consider the 60 day exhibition period inadequate to address the level of detail involved and the impacts an airport may have - this airport has already been with successive governments for decades.

The draft EIS is approximately 4000 pages. Penrith Council has been calling for a minimum of 90 days to respond to the draft EIS.

Penrith, along with neighbouring Western Sydney Councils (WSROC and MACROC) have appointed an independent team of experts to go over the EIS to inform our submission. This will ensure we can accurately represent the best interests of our community.

We’re looking for commitments on jobs, road, rail and other infrastructure to support the airport.

For Western Sydney and Penrith residents to benefi t as a result of the airport construction and operation, it needs to be fully integrated and connected with the region – through road and rail. This will stimulate jobs growth beyond the airport.

We also want to see that our natural environment and the amenity of our community is protected. The EIS must accurately address environmental and social impacts to ensure the health and wellbeing of our community is maintained and our beautiful natural environment protected. A key issue is how noise is to be eff ectively managed, this is not negotiable.

Each day more than 65,000 people leave our City to go to work – sitting on congested roads and crowded trains, taking them away from their homes and families. We’ve been consistently talking to both State and Federal Governments on a range of issues including a rail link between the airport and the western line.

Imagine the increased productivity if even before the airport opens, the Western Sydney Orbital was complete and the South West rail line extended through the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area to the western line. This would connect the North and South West growth centres and create access to tens of thousands of jobs within an easy commute." said Councillor Karen McKeown, Mayor of Penrith

Loyalty is (now) a One-Way StreetIn the early 70’s I can remember going to the local Bank of NSW (now Westpac)

branch with Mum and Dad and my sisters to meet with the Bank Manager for a home loan. We were all dressed up and as we approached the door Dad turned to us kids and warned us sternly to be on our best behaviour, glaring at each of us and poking us menacingly in the chest.

Once inside, the Bank Manager greeted us by name, all of us, because that was our Bank and he knew us and we knew him. We went there all the time to bank Dad’s wages or to pay bills or any number of things.

The Bank Manager knew that my parents were dedicated, hard working and honourable people and on the basis of their character as much as financial position he gave them a Home Loan. It was an age when the banks would back their clients in good times and bad, and in response earned the loyalty of their clients.

For better or worse things have moved on significantly since those days. Most transactions are done over the Internet and there is no personal relationship and as a result the Banks loyalty to their clients has also been lost.

Many of us remain loyal to our Bank because that’s what our Parents taught us. Sadly though, our loyalty counts for nothing. In fact Banks are more interested in attracting new customers than looking after existing clients.

Recently, APRA issued new lending requirements to banks and increased capital requirements. In response the Banks changed their lending rules in various ways and as I write this Westpac have just announced an increase in Interest Rates for existing customers!

Loyalty between Bank and Customer is now a one-way street and unfortunately client loyalty to their Bank is misplaced. If your Bank has declined a loan or isn’t offering you their best interest rate, talk to us. We can simply and easily tell you how much you can borrow and find you a great rate.

Don’t Let Your ‘Back Scans’ Defi ne You!

One of the most often run examinations for back pain is a radiological scan - an X-ray, CT scan or MRI. All these scans are excellent in certain circumstances and they can add valuable information to a clinical picture. So many people with back pain request or even expect their GP to order a scan and are disappointed or even upset when this doesn’t happen. However as highlighted in a quote from an ABC Four Corners report on Sep 28, 2015, ‘the truth is, many of the scans, tests and procedures ordered by medical practitioners are wasteful, unnecessary and potentially harmful’! So if on occasion your GP denies you a scan for back pain they may actually be doing you & the public purse a favour.

I see patients scans & the accompanying reports almost every day. Scans reveal many things, such as vertebrae with fractures, trophic or Modic changes, vertebrae with altered shapes, fused vertebra; many types of bulging discs, loss of disc height, osteophytes (bony outgrowths from vertebrae), stenosed (blocked) spinal canals & nerve exits, facet joint arthritis, etc.

There are many causes of back pain, and proper diagnosis is vital. In some cases what is revealed on a scan is very important and helpful. In the majority of cases (as suggested by experts in the Four Corners report) scans reveal little about the cause of back pain, nor for that matter about likely response to treatment. Still many patients come in having been told, based on scan results, that they’re just getting old and that there is little that can be done about their pain or their state of debility. These folk then simply put up with the pain which is often quite high, even with multiple medications.

While not every case of back pain will be fi xed with manual therapies and indeed some people may need surgery or other treatments, simple intervention with appropriate muscle elongation therapy can have surprising results. Using specifi c techniques we remove infl ammatory fl uids from back tissues & lengthen them so that tissue function normalises. With regular treatment over a few weeks or months depending on the severity of the problem in most cases chronic back pain goes completely, even in many long standing cases.

Share Your Story of GriefI'm wondering why we can talk openly about birth but we can't about death. What's with that? Is it because we can’t deal with emotions? People get upset, sad and sometimes inconsolable. If they want to talk, let them talk.

Birth stories abound, every time women get together. They talk about the pain, the drugs, the doctor, the midwife, how long the labor was and if it was natural or caesarian.

These are all acceptable conversations to have but if you mention death, the conversation ends. Why?

I wonder what would happen if you tweeted about how grief has impacted you? Not only in the beginning but a year later or 5 years later.

You want to remember that person who occupied that space in time, your loved one. You want to be able to say their name and tell stories about them. Whether the stories are happy or sad, you just want them to be remembered.

We gather around the new mum and support her for as long as she needs.

This doesn't happen for someone who is grieving. Support is there for around 6 weeks and then you’re meant to get over it

and get on with your life.We're robbing people of telling their stories. Women tell

birthing stories their whole lives. Giving birth impacts them so much, it's extremely emotional and is amazing in every way, it just has to be shared.

Let everyone's story be told

It lets everyone know that you had that person in your life, no matter how long or short a time. It helps you feel that they mattered and added to your life. Telling your story helps you keep their spirit alive and keeps them real for you.
