Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith joined Donna McFadzean, Principal of St Finbar’s Primary School to announce funding of $20,000 for the school under the NSW Government’s $20 million Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) grant program.

“It is fantastic to make this announcement which will no doubt make life easier for many families in our local community,” Stuart Ayres said.

“We understand working parents need fl exibility and that is why we have now expanded the grant program and opened it up to more schools. This will provide more places for our kids and enable our local school communities to better meet this growing demand.

Mr Ayres also announced that more grants are available for Out of School Hours Care places.

Grants of up to $30,000 are available to help with the cost of establishing or extending existing OSHC services. The grants can be used for fi t-outs, tendering or equipment costs by schools with new or existing OSHC services.

Tyler (9) and Ella (7) have just begun a new and exciting adventure at Leonay Public School. With Tyler starting Year 4 and Ella entering into Year 2, they started their day bright and early and jumping with excitement. They just could not wait for the first day of school.

Dressed in their brand new school uniforms and school bags in tow, both Tyler and Ella had been counting down the days to their first day at their new school. Upon arriving on the first day they both felt the nerves kick in, however due to the endless support both Tyler and Ella received the nerves slowly slipped away.

Both Tyler and Ella met new friends, met their new teachers – who “are the best teachers in the entire world” and had what they would say was “the best first day of school ever”.

Changing schools is never easy but they both have embraced every element of change and have started their 2016 school year with a bang.

Younger brother Koby (4) also had an exciting first day at ‘Adventure Preschool’, where he too made new friends and got to play both inside and outside. After having such an exciting first day, he was so excited to go back again the next day.

Tyler, Ella and Koby have all started the year with great excitement and happiness and look forward to a great 2016 school year in Leonay and Emu Plains.

Not everyone wants to be Prime Minister, or don the baggy green cap. But in our own way, we each want to do well for ourselves, we each want to fi nd our own greatness. Some people look for it in what they accomplish, others in what they earn, others still in how their friends and neighbours view them.

Jesus’ disciples knew it – hey they were no diff erent! So when they heard Jesus talking about God’s kingdom - that he was the king - they asked him how they could get in on the action, how they could be great. What he said challenged everything they held dear, ‘I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’ (Matthew 18:3).

Huh, what can they show about greatness? Little children don’t have anything they can off er people. In fact, they rely on the adults in their lives to provide for them. They come with empty hands. They have to accept what’s done for them rather than proudly boast of what they’ve done.

But that’s Jesus’ point. True greatness isn’t something we can earn. It’s accepting we depend on God. It’s the opposite of pride. Greatness is trusting Jesus and His great work. It’s relying on that fi rst Easter rather than anything we have done. Greatness is being humble before God and saying, ‘nothing in my hands I bring, simply to your cross I cling’.

That’s a relief really, because the things we so quickly rely on for security and power and greatness are at the same time

our insecurities - the quicksand under our feet. ‘Will I have accomplished enough? Will I get enough stuff ? Will I know the right people to get me through when I’m in a bind?’ Jesus off ers a whole new way to look at life – and so with it, a whole new life! Have you found greatness?

Hi Everyone, I’m Laura Jones and I am so grateful and

very excited to be joining the District Gazette Team as their Journalist.

I was born in Johannesburg South Africa and have lived in Australia for the past seven years. I am currently a third year Journalism Student and am loving every second of working and gaining experience within the industry.

My family is made up of my parents, my younger brother and myself. My brother just recently fi nished his HSC and will be starting university this year doing a Bachelor of Science. My Dad is an engineer and my Mum is a primary school teacher.

I reside locally and during my free time I enjoy weight training and surprisingly enough... fi shing!

Hi Everyone, Enid Turns 100!

Recently, Glenbrook Women's Bowling club celebrated a special birthday of one of their members, when Enid Carter turned 100. Enid has been a member of Glenbrook Women's Bowling club for over 30 years, and has now joined the Centenarian Club.

Enid has been an active member of the Women's Bowls up until a few years ago. A tribute was presented by Vice President of Glenbrook Women's Bowls, Pat Harvey, and a presentation was made on behalf of the Nepean District Bowls Vice President, Carolyn Pugh.

Enid was clearly moved by the celebrations and well wishes. She thanked everyone for their kind words and tributes. An inspiration to us all, Enid now joins the elite 100's Club which is our Nations fastest growing group. We all wish her many more wonderful years and thank her for her contributions to our bowling club. Three Cheers for Enid!!!

PCS Does CSI: Investigating the World of Forensics

Penrith Christian School students in Years 8, 9 and 10 were immersed in crime scene investigation last month. Education Interactive ran an exciting hands-on program, giving students the chance to explore the fascinating world of Forensic Science by becoming investigators and solving a crime.

“This was way better than watching it on TV!” said one student, “We got to see how it really happens.”

Students investigated the case of a school girl found dead in a Sydney national park, their goal to work out how she got there and why she died. The case highlighted for the students the importance of cyber safety and the risks of drink spiking in everyday situations.

The interactive sessions provided students with the opportunity to sift through evidence, such as fi ngerprints, digital microscopy, toxicology, DNA profi ling, autopsy, fi bres and much more.

“This workshop was such a great way for students to really understand the science behind investigations”, said Science teacher Denise Bailey. “Rather than watching it from afar, they were involved in the investigation, relying on their scientifi c skills to solve the case.”

Water is an integral part of the great Australian lifestyle, and with the prevalence of home swimming pools, it is very important that water safety is a priority at all times. Australian experts say that children need constant supervision when they're in, on, or around any water, that pool gates must be self closing and well maintained, and that all children should Learn To Swim from an early age. But how early should a child start swimming lessons?

It is recommended that children start swimming lessons from 6 months, but you can practice early water familiarisation before starting formal lessons. Make sure your baby has regular baths and showers, and becomes accustomed to and comfortable with the sensation of water being trickled and then poured over their head, from a very young age.

Babies are not born with a fear of the water, instead this fear is acquired as the child grows, so a 6 month old will accept the water more readily than an older child. In addition to safety, there are strong benefi ts to introducing babies to the water early, including the development of gross motor skills, and improved strength, co-ordination and balance, as baby is supported by the water and less restricted by gravity.

Warm water combined with gentle exercise relaxes and stimulates baby's appetites, with many parents reporting that their babies usually eat and sleep better after swimming. Additionally, the uninterrupted quality time whilst swimming facilitates an even deeper bond between parent and child.

It is also important to remember that swimming pools are not the only hazard in the home. Home pools and spas are obvious drowning hazards, but there are many other items and areas which present a signifi cant drowning threat to young children in and around the home, such as buckets, bathtubs, eskies, fountains, fi shponds, lakes, drains, infl atable pools, and even pet bowls. It is crucial that these are emptied, covered, put away and not left where they can fi ll up with water.

Only by applying this many layered approach can we keep our children safer around water.

When parents give their children negative emotional messages that focus on who the child is rather than his or her behaviour, they unwittingly dig a pit of shame so deep and so wide, it may take the child a lifetime to climb out of it.

“You do it deliberately to annoy me”“I’m going to ring grandma to tell her how awful you are”“You are as stupid as your father”“Go ahead and try it, you’ll just fail like you always do”“Why are you so clumsy?”“I’m so angry with you I can’t stand the sight of you”Negative and emotional messages that attack a child’s sense

of self and what she can do, leave their mark and can lead to mental health problems into adolescence and adulthood.

When parents approach a child’s mistaken behaviour at the level of the behaviour, they say things like…

“I’m really disappointed that you kicked the ball at the laundry window, especially as I warned you about it fi ve minutes ago.”

“What might have been a better choice?”“When you and your brother argue, I feel so frustrated.”A little bit of guilt is healthy and adaptive. Children learn what

is acceptable behaviour when parents focus on communicating what they didn’t like about the behaviour and how the child might do better next time. Prolonged ranting, raving, lecturing, and anger cause excessive guilt which induces shame.

One of my colleagues saw an interaction between a parent and a child the other day. The mother screamed at him “how many times do I have to tell you not to do that” and she walked away from him. The little boy, no older than 3, put his head down and banged his head with both fi sts. He then went and sat behind a park bench and cried.

Was he feeling shame or guilt do you think? Is he learning that he can’t rely on the adults in his life to help organise his thoughts and feelings, and more importantly his behaviours?

Penrith Christian School is this year celebrating 35 years of operation as a Christian school serving the Penrith region.

The School commenced as a ministry of what was then the Penrith Christian Fellowship Centre and was located in Dean Place before moving to a rural site in the Londonderry area in 1983-1984.

In 1985 the School was relocated to its current site on the junction of the Northern Road and the M4 Motorway; the church building having been completed in 1984.

Since then, Penrith Christian School has grown steadily as parents, seeking a Christian education for their children, have continued to support the school. In the early days the buildings were built with the aid of volunteers, and much growth in the School’s facilities is attributed to the commitment and the service of those early pioneers.

By the mid-90s the existing Library (now called the iCentre), and associated technology blocks, were completed as the School moved into secondary education and expansion to two streams.

The School continues to be a vital part of the ministry of ImagineNations Church; and, over the years has introduced additional classes in the secondary years, as well as Early Childhood Services, off ering Preschool and Preparatory School programs for 3 and 4 year-olds.

Throughout the years PCS has never lost sight of the vision and goal of the founders who wanted to provide an education for our children that acknowledged the centrality of the Christian worldview in all areas of the curriculum; developing students in the academic, social, physical and spiritual domains.

These days we have moved well and truly into the 21st Century with a technology-rich environment, and diverse learning experiences across a wide range of subjects and interest areas. Peri Peri Barbecue Chicken PizzaEasy • Time 50 min • Serves 4

Ingredients • 2 Red Capsicums• 70g (1/4 Cup) No-Fat Greek Yoghurt• 2 Garlic Cloves• 1 Long Red Chilli, Chopped• 1 Teaspoon Sweet Paprika• 1 Teaspoon Dried Oregano Leaves• 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice• 2 Teaspoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil• 400g Chicken Tenderloins• 1 Large Red Onion, Cut Into Thin Wedges• 2 Pizza Bases• 80g (1 Cup) Coarsely Grated Mainland Noble White

Reduced-Fat Cheddar• 1 Lebanese Cucumber, Seeded, Finely Chopped• Micro Coriander, To Serve

Method1. Preheat barbecue with hood on medium. Spray capsicums

with oil. Cook, turning, for 15-20 minutes or until charred. Place in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Stand for 5 minutes. Peel and deseed. Thickly slice 1 1/2 capsicums. Process other half in a food processor until smooth. Place in a bowl and stir in yoghurt. Season.

2. Meanwhile, process garlic, chilli, paprika and oregano until coarsely chopped. Add lemon juice and oil. Process until combined. Season. Transfer to a bowl and add chicken. Marinate for 10 minutes. Chargrill, turning, for 4-5 minutes or until cooked through. Slice and keep warm.

3. Spray onion with oil. Chargrill, turning, for 2-3 minutes until tender.

4. Place pizza bases on 2 baking trays. Sprinkle with cheese. Top with capsicum and onion. Barbecue, with hood closed, for 12-14 minutes or until base is crisp and cheese melts.

5. Top the pizzas with chicken, cucumber and coriander. Drizzle with capsicum yoghurt.

WHAT’S COOKING International Folk Dancing, Come One, Come All

Folk dancing is a community-oriented activity, originating in village settings where socialising was integral to the dance experience. Two international folk dance groups, where dances from all around the world are taught, operate in this local area.

No partner is required, since most dances are danced in a circle formation. Another ‘plus’ is the variety of fabulous music accompanying each dance, whether it is fl owing Armenian music or the pulsating rhythms of Bulgaria.

Leonay resident Jeanette Mollenhauer is the current President of Folk Dance Australia, a member of the International Council for Traditional Music, and has taught folk dancing (in schools, universities, community groups, and retirement villages) for fourteen years.

Pars Defect Pain – Rest is Not the Only Answer

The ‘pars interarticularis’ (part of the vertebral arch) is one of two (left or right) bony bridges that connect the upper with the lower facet joints in a vertebra. A pars defect (spondylolysis) is a break or weakness (see diagram) in one or both of these bridges. It can be due to:

1. a congenital abnormality (present at birth) called an ‘attenuated pars’, or

2. a stress fracture. The main vertebrae aff ected are L5 (85 - 95%), and L4 (5 – 15%),

but rarely higher lumbar vertebrae. It can be diagnosed by plain X-ray, CT or MRI. 50 - 81% of people with spondylolysis end up with the bilateral fractures of the pars interarticularis, resulting in forward slippage (spondylolisthesis) of the vertebra.

Most pars defects are asymptomatic, but some present as lower back pain. Typically when the patient stands on one leg and leans backwards, pain results. When the defect is on one side only, standing on the opposite leg elicits the pain (Syrmou 2010). Pain typically gets worse with sports and better with rest (Harris nd)

About 6% of the general population have a pars defect (Syrmou 2010). However the injury is more common in adolescents participating in high risk sports (gymnastics, diving, weight lifting, wrestling, rowing, fi gure skating, dancing, volleyball, soccer, tennis). Up to 30.4% experience lower back pain (Malanga 2015) often due to a pars defect (McTimoney & Micheli 2003).

No optimal treatment plan exists in the literature, pain relief medications may be used but nonsteroidal anti-infl ammatory drugs (NSAIDs) should be avoided as they slow down the bone growth and healing (Syrmou 2010). Some authors (Harris nd) state that ‘only rest’ can heal a pars defect, with acupuncture and massage having no benefi t. This is incorrect.

Rest is vital, however stiff lower back muscles increase the forces on the vertebrae to which they are attached and so the likelihood of re-injury. Infl ammation reduces the ability of tissue to heal. Muscle elongation therapy uses both dry needling techniques and specifi c muscle elongation techniques to address both these issues, and (along with rest) helps many cases of long standing back pain associated with pars defects to heal very nicely.

You might not feel like getting out of bed but you have children who want to celebrate Easter, the way they always have. This year do it diff erent. A way of doing this is to start sharing happy memories of your loved one.

Sharing these memories help to fi ll the empty space left by your loved one and to keep their memory alive.

Happy Easter!Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time

We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caff eine, which when ingested by a

dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal.

If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fl uids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal.

There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure

that your pet has a safe Easter:

• Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet.

• Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate.• Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets.

Dogs have a good sense of smell and will fi nd chocolate in kid’s schoolbags!

• Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around.

In the spirit of Easter what better way to brighten up the veterinary hospital, than to host a colouring in competition. All entries will be displayed on the walls of the veterinary hospital.
