Injection Lipolysis for Body & Facial Contouring

What is it about?

Injection Lipolysis is an innovative procedure originally developed by Dr. Patricia Ritters from South America in the 1990>s. Injection Lipolysis or Lipodissolve, as it is commonly known is a medical technique whereby fat deposits found under the skin may be eliminated by means of localized injections of Phosphatidylcholine, a natural food supplement extracted from Soybean and Deoxycholate, a bile acid. Both of these compounds are endogenous in that they are present in the body and are mediators in the many metabolic reactions involved in fat metabolism.

The numbers of treatments required differ from one person to the next, depending on the body area and the body size. Generally two to four treatments are required, with intervals of six to eight weeks, to obtain successful results.

How does it work?

The active substance, phosphatidylcholine, causes the breakdown of fat cells and release of the fatty acids which are then eliminated by the body>s normal metabolism. This process takes around six to eight weeks and therefore, one should not expect any results prior to that time period. Patients usually experience swelling, redness and possible bruising after the treatment. Within a couple of days, any discomfort or pain in the treated area are usually disappears. One of the main advantages of injection lipolysis is the fact that it always yields smooth body contours unlike the high proportion of cases after traditional liposuction that result in unevenness and depressions at the site of treatment.

Permanent Hair Reduction

• Whatisitabout?Permanent hair reduction may be achieved by a variety of light-based systems including lasers, and intense-pulsed light. Unwanted hair can be removed anywhere on the body such as the legs, armpits, upper chin and bikini line. With each consecutive treatment the hairs ultimately become fewer in number and finer in appearance.

• Howdoesitwork?The primary principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis. Lasers can cause localized damage by selectively heating melanin (dark pigment) in the root of the hair (the follicle), while not heating the rest of the skin. All hair goes through a cycle including a growth phase, resting stage and shedding phase. The highest concentration of melanin is present in the follicle during growth and consequently only hair that is in this phase will be weakened by lasers and other light-based systems. At any one time only 20% of body hairs are in the growth phase, hence the requirement for multiple treatment sessions.

• Isthisprocedurerightforyou?At Dr. Hessa Al-Buainain Center, we have a choice of different lasers and light-based devices for permanent hair reduction. These include the Alexandrite Laser, ND: YAG laser, Advanced Intense Pulsed Light system, and IPL.

The laser that is appropriate for your ski type is selected and typically a minimum of four sessions is required. In between sessions, hair will re-grow.

Following a full course of treatment, the «hair free» period will differ from one individual to another and can vary from several months to several years. With multiple treatments, long-term hair removal is possible, but hair re-growth is also possible and repeat treatments may be necessary. Studies have shown that hair removal system can reduce hair count by 40 to 80 percent. Results vary from one person to another, with some individuals responding better than others.

Many patients find that maintenance session done once or twice a year are ideal for keeping unwanted hair at bay after completing the initial treatment protocol.

In a minority of patients hair loss may only be temporary and complete re-growth may occur.

What are Ablative and Non-Ablative Lasers and how do they work?

Ablative Lasers So - called “ablative” or skin resurfacing lasers briefly direct an intense burst of laser energy onto the surface of the skin. This energy heats water within the surface layers of the skin, causing both the water and the tissue of the skin to turn to vapour. Every time the laser passes over the skin, some of the outermost layers of the skin are removed in a precise and controlled way to the appropriate depth.The skin then heals over a period of time, as new layers of collagen are produced. The skin can literally resurface itself, causing an improvement in the appearance of sun damaged or acne scarred skin. After the treatment, the skin will look much healthier than it did previously.This intensive treatment can significantly reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and pigment (or skin colour) changes on the face, neck, and other parts of the body. They can be used in sensitive areas, such as lines around the lips, eyes and even eyelids, or over the whole of the face. Acne and other types of scars and certain stretch marks can also be improved.There are two main types of ablative laser - the original machines used were carbon dioxide lasers, and more recently erbium:YAG laser systems have been introduced.

Non - Ablative Lasers The so called non-ablative lasers have been a more recent introduction in types of aesthetic equipment for skin resurfacing.These lasers have lower energy levels than ablative lasers (which resurface or remove the outer layer of skin completely), and try to cause damage within the dermal layer of the skin without removal of the outer epidermal layers. That is to say that the laser treats the layers of skin under the surface without damaging the surface too much. This lessens the recovery period after the treatment and reduces the number of complications that can occur.It is thought that the laser’s heat in the dermal layers causes collagen to be produced which helps reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. However, the results from this type of procedure are less obvious than those which can be achieved with ablative laser skin resurfacing during which the surface of the skin is removed.

Fractional Laser Devices Used in Dr. Hessa CenterAffirm™ from Cynosure – This is a 1440nm non-ablative laser with Cynosure’s proprietary Combined Apex PulseSM (CAP) technology. This is a special lens mounted over the end of the laser that consists of approximately 1,000 diffractive elements per cm2 which put simply ‘bends’ the wavelength of light emitted from the laser so as to affect more surface area per single pulse of the laser. The Affirm™ targets the superficial layers of sun damaged skin, and delivers both a high and low energy of light within the treatment zone, due to the lens configuration, which they claim enhances collagen remodelling whilst also stimulating collagen production.

BOTOX for Refining Contouring

• Whatisitabout?Facial lines are caused by the repeated use of facial muscles in a particular manner. Expressions such us squinting, frowning and smiling, caused by movement of the muscles under the skin, tend to create wrinkle and folds in the skin. The use of Botulinium toxin Type A (Botox) for the reduction of facial lines, is the most popular cosmetic treatment world-wide. Botox has been used in medicine for other indications for many years. Even very young children are treated for squints and nervous ticks with Botox injections. The substance cannot cause any permanent damage or travel within the body since it attaches itself to the target muscle and cannot migrate from there.

• Isthisprocedurerightforyou?Even though Botox does not eliminate static wrinkles, where the skin has already been damaged (such wrinkles should be treated by other means including facial peels and filler injections), Botox is highly effective in eliminating:

• horizontal and vertical foreheads lines• crow>s feet around the eyes• Turkey neck due to contracted platymal bands• Popply chin

• Howdoesitwork?Botox temporarily blocks nervous transmission to the target muscles, namely the mimic muscles. This leads to a temporary relaxation of these muscles, and hence the reduction in the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, which are those that arise from facial expression. The treatment takes 10 minutes and it takes anywhere between 2 to 14 days to see the full effects. The benefits can last up to 4 months and results may vary.

A safe and effective procedure, Botox by Allergen is FDA approved for cosmetic corrections and most people find the injections cause only mild discomfort with rare side effects. At time bruising and mild swelling can occur that last up to ten days. However, other rare adverse effects such us drooping of the brow and the eyelids are fully reversible and only last a few weeks.

FILLERS for Facial Contouring

• Whatisitallabout?Various dermal fillers used to fill out wrinkles and hollow in the face and enhance facial beauty and symmetry.

• Isthisprocedurerightforyou?Fillers are used for a procedure known as <soft tissue augmentation>, that is an effective means of re-contouring the face. In a young face, the technique may be used to enhance cheek bone, increasing chin definition and filling in acne scars. In an older face, soft tissue augmentation replaces the need for a surgical facelift in the vast majority of cases, since it can replace volume loss and restore youthful facial contours.

• Howdoesitwork?Soft tissue augmentation involves the artistic and strategic injection of filler substances to eliminate shadows and hollows and restore the shape of the face to that which it was in youth as well as to augment facial features. The technique is relatively straightforward, but as harmless as it sounds, the patient must be made aware of the many different filler substances and the side effects and advantages of each.

Temporary fillersThe most commonly used temporary filler is Hyaluronic acid, which is a natural component of the skin. Marketed under several trade names including; Restylane>, <Perlane> and <Juvederm> Hyaluronic acid is safe since it is natural, degrades and is eliminated and therefore the cosmetic correction lasts only four to six months. Hyaluronic acid does not regenerate this skin but merely acts as a bulking agent. At Dr. Hessa Al-Buainain Center Hyaluronic acid fillers are used for temporary face and lip augmentation.

Permanent fillersThis category includes products such as Silicone, Polyacrylamide gel (trade names: <Aquamid>, <Outline>) and Polymethylmethacrylate (trade names: <Artecoll>, <Dermalive>). These products are synthetic gels that are not biodegradable and cannot be removed from the body in the event of any undesirable reaction, or even where the cosmetics results are unsatisfactory. Permanent fillers ultimately yield unnatural wax-like appearance to the face. In addition, they have been found to cause lumps and inflammation, known as <granuloma>. In many cases this potentially serious and disfiguring condition cannot be treated effectively and can occur many years after the time of injection.Permanent fillers are not used at Dr. Hessa Al-Buainain Center.

Chemical Peeling

What is it about?There are two types of skin peels –Superficial and Medium-depth Peels. Both are very safe and effective in achieving a uniform exfoliation of the surface and lower layers of epidermis. Regular peels give your skin a healthy glow and slow down skin aging.
