6.   (10  points)    Ascorbic  acid  (vitamin  C)  is  remarkably  acidic  (pKa  4.2)  for  an  organic  compound  that  does  not  contain  a  

   -­‐COOH  group.    Determine  which  -­‐OH  group  is  the  most  acidic  and  explain  why  the  pKa  of  that  -­‐OH  is  so  low.      

   

The  OH  at  C3  is  quite  acidic  because  the  anion  can  be  delocalized  onto  the  carbonyl  oxygen,  just  like  the  anion  formed  from  a  carboxylic  acid.    The  other  -­‐OH’s  are  unexceptional.
