What is the difference

between faith &

believing?


COMMON MISTAKE:

FAITH & BELIEVING

ARE SYNONYMOUS


Faith - πίστις (pistis)

Be Convinced – πείθω (peithō)

Believe - πιστεύω (pisteuō)


John 3:14-16 (ESV) 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the

wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted

up, 15 that whoever believes (pisteuo) in him

may have eternal life.16 “For God so loved the

world, that he gave his only Son, that

whoever believes (pisteuo) in him should not

perish but have eternal life


John 3:36 (ESV) 36 Whoever believes (pisteuo) in the Son has

eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son

shall not see life, but the wrath of God

remains on him.

Mark 11:24 (ESV) 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in

prayer, believes (pisteuo) that you have

received it, and it will be yours.


PISTIS (FAITH)


PISTIS (Faith) IS:

PEITHO (TO BE CONVINCED)


PEITHO IS:

1. HUMAN RESPONSE

2. TO BE CONVINCED


Philippians 1:25 (ESV) 25 Convinced (peitho) of this, I know that I will

remain and continue with you all, for your

progress and joy in the faith,

Philippians 1:25 (ESV) 3 For we are the circumcision, who worship by

the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and

put no confidence (peitho) in the flesh

Philemon 1:21 (ESV) 21 Confident (peitho) of your obedience, I

write to you, knowing that you will do even

more than I say.


PISTEUO (BELIEVE)


Hebrews 4:2-3 (KJV) 2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as

well as unto them: but the word preached

did not profit them, not being mixed with

faith in them that heard it. 3 For we which

have believed do enter into rest, as he said,

As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall

enter into my rest: although the works were

finished from the foundation of the world.

BELIEVING HAS TWO

COMPONENTS:

1. FAITH (pistis)

2. CONVICTION (peitho)


To be convinced is the

same as changing of

the mind

Mark 1:15 (ESV) 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and

the kingdom of God is at hand; repent

(metanoia) and believe (pisteuo) in the

gospel.”


IF ONE COMPONENT

IS MISSING THERE IS

NO POWER


John 4:48 (ESV) 48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see

signs and wonders you will not believe

(pisteuo).”

Luke 24:25 (ESV) 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones,

and slow of heart to believe (pisteuo) all

that the prophets have spoken!


Sometimes Jesus overrides

people’s unbelief if that

person is honest enough to

admit it


Mark 9:24-25 (ESV) 24 Immediately the father of the child cried

out and said, “I believe (pisteuo); help my

unbelief!” 25 And when Jesus saw that a

crowd came running together, he rebuked

the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute

and deaf spirit, I command you, come out

of him and never enter him again.”
