1 Compliance Statements and Recycling

1.1 Declaration of Conformity (EU)

The B‑WIC and B‑SMC adhere to the guidelines of the council of the European Community for meeting

the requirements of the member states regarding the RoHS directive.

1.2 Information for Disposal and Recycling

This test set (including all accessories) is not intended for household use. After use the

test set cannot be disposed of as household waste!

For customers in EU countries (incl. European Economic Area):

OMICRON test sets are subject to the EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment

Directive (WEEE directive). As part of our legal obligations under this legislation,

OMICRON offers to take back the OMICRON test set and ensure that it is disposed of by

an authorized recycling facility.

For customers outside the European Economic Area:

Please contact the competent authorities for the relevant environmental regulations in your

country and dispose the OMICRON test set only in accordance with your local legal

requirements.

2 Safety

2.1 Disclaimer

If the equipment is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, the protection provided by the

equipment may be impaired. Opening the device invalidates all warranty claims. Before operating the

B‑WIC and B‑SMC, read the safety instructions in this document carefully. If you do not understand

some safety rules, contact OMICRON Lab before proceeding.

2.2 Safety Instructions

► The B‑WIC and B‑SMC are SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage according to IEC 60950) devices, also

known as protection class III equipment.

► Only use the B‑WIC and B‑SMC in conjunction with the Bode 100. Do not apply any external

voltages or currents.

2.3 Designated Use

B‑WIC and B‑SMC have been especially designed to measure the impedance of passive components in

conjunction with the Bode 100 in laboratory or manufacturing environments.

2.4 Operator Qualification

Testing with B‑WIC and B‑SMC must only be carried out by qualified, skilled and authorized personnel.

Personnel receiving training, instructions, directions, or education on B‑WIC and B‑SMC must be under

constant supervision of an experienced operator while working with the equipment. Testing with B‑WIC

and B‑SMC must comply with the internal safety instructions as well as additional relevant documents.

2.5 Cleaning

To clean the B‑WIC and B‑SMC, use a cloth dampened with isopropanol alcohol. Prior to cleaning, always ensure that all connections to the B‑WIC and B‑SMC and DUT 1are disconnected.

Application Information

4 Application Information

The B‑WIC and B‑SMC test fixtures are designed to measure the impedance of passive components in

the frequency range from 1 Hz to 50 MHz in conjunction with the Bode 100 vector network analyzer.

4.1 Measurement Principle

B‑WIC and B‑SMC contain a resistive measurement bridge with a voltage divider and a current shunt.

The measurement principle is a relative voltage / current method where CH1 receives a voltage signal

proportional to the voltage at the DUT and CH2 receives a voltage signal proportional to the current

flowing thru the DUT.

Open / Short / Load calibration must be carried out to compensate for parasitic effects and non-ideal

behavior occurring at higher frequencies. To learn how to calibrate the B‑WIC and B‑SMC, please refer

to 4.4 Calibration / Correction on page 8.

4.2 Device Connection

The figure below shows the connection from Bode 100 to B‑WIC and B‑SMC. It is recommended to use

the 0.5 m long BNC cables delivered with the Bode 100 for the connection.

4.3 Software Settings & Configuration

When measuring with B‑WIC and B‑SMC make sure to use the Impedance Adapter measurement

mode in the Bode Analyzer Suite as shown below:

Note, that you must perform an impedance calibration / correction before you can start measuring.

Check out the next chapter to learn how to perform the Open / Short / Load calibration.

After the calibration has been performed, you can start either a single

sweep or a continuous sweep by clicking on the corresponding icons.

4.4 Calibration / Correction

Before you can start a measurement, Open / Short / Load calibration / correction must be performed.

This moves the reference plane from the Bode 100 front panel to the DUT connection points of the

B‑WIC and B‑SMC as shown below:

To start a calibration, select either the User-Range Impedance Calibration or the Full-Range Impedance

calibration by clicking on the corresponding icon.

4.4.1 Calibrating B-WIC using B-CAL board

4.5 Connecting the DUT

Please follow the rules outlined in this section to ensure best measurement accuracy using B‑WIC and

B‑SMC

4.5.1 Avoid Leads and Large DUTs

Do not use extra leads to connect the DUT to the B‑WIC and B‑SMC test fixtures. Extra leads will

introduce stray capacitance to ground / housing. This can cause currents to bypass the internal

measurement bridge, causing errors in the measurement. The same is true for physically large DUTs.

4.5.2 Electrode Dimensions

The following pictures show the geometry of the B‑WIC and B‑SMC electrodes.

Maximum DUT wire diameter is 1.8 mm.

Minimum spacing of DUT wires (clearance) is

3 mm. The electrode length is 24 mm.

Maximum DUT size that can be placed in the

B-SMC is of 9.5 mm length and 7.5 mm width.

Note that the needle electrode is in the center.

4.6 Measurement Range and Accuracy

Measurement accuracy and measurable impedance range are limited by the following factors:

• Open / Short / Load calibration respectively correction:

The measurement is relative to the calibration elements. Hence, accuracy depends on the

accuracy of the calibration elements.

• Noise:

Especially when reducing the signal level or increasing receiver bandwidth values, noise can be

the limiting factor. To reduce noise, use a higher signal level and lower receiver bandwidth

setting.

• Contact resistance:

Both, the B‑WIC and B‑SMC are subject to contact resistance. The gold plating of the

electrodes lowers the contact resistance to around 0.5 mΩ. Make sure to have clean contacts

before performing Short calibration and low value impedance measurements!

The following figure shows the measurement range and the typical relative accuracy that can be

expected when measuring impedance with B‑WIC and B‑SMC:

Note: The relative accuracy results were determined using an Agilent E4980A precision LCR meter as

reference. The measurements were done using 10 Hz receiver bandwidth setting to reduce noise.

Bezpečnostní pokyny:

• Zařízení B-WIC a B-SMC nesou ochranu SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage (Bezpečnostní velmi nízké napětí) podle směrnice IEC 60950), která je také známa jako třída krytí III.

• Zařízení B-WIC a B-SMC používejte ve spojení s analyzátorem Bode 100. Neaplikujte jakákoli vnější napětí nebo proudy. Určené použití:

Zařízení B-WIC a B-SMC byla vyvinuta speciálně k měření impedance pasivních komponent ve spojení s analyzátorem Bode 100 pro použití v laboratořích a výrobních zařízeních.

Kvalifikace operátora: Testování pomocí zařízení B-WIC a B-SMC smí provádět pouze kvalifikovaná, vyškolená a pověřená osoba. Osoby, které jsou školeny, poučovány a trénovány v použití zařízení B-WIC a B-SMC, musí být při práci se zařízením pod neustálým dohledem zkušeného operátora. Testování se zařízením B-WIC a B-SMC musí vyhovovat interním bezpečnostním pokynům a dalším relevantním dokumentům.

• Utilice los accesorios B-WIC y B-SMC exclusivamente con el instrumento Bode 100. No aplique tensiones o corrientes externas. Aplicación prevista:

Los accesorios B-WIC y B-SMC están especialmente diseñados para medir la impedancia de los componentes pasivos junto con el instrumento Bode 100 en entornos de laboratorio o de fabricación.

• B-WIC i B-SMC su SELV uređaji (engl. Safety Extra Low Voltage prema standardu IEC 60950) poznati i kao zaštitna oprema III. klase.

• Koristite B-WIC i B-SMC samo u spoju s uređajem Bode 100. Ne upotrebljavajte bilo kakav vanjski napon ili struju. Predviđena namjena:

B-WIC i B-SMC posebno su dizajnirani za mjerenje impendancije pasivnih komponenti u spoju s uređajem Bode 100 u laboratoriju ili u proizvodnom okruženju.

Kvalifikacije rukovatelja: Ispitivanje pomoću B-WIC i B-SMC uređaja smiju provoditi samo kvalificirani, stručni i ovlašteni zaposlenici. Zaposlenici koji prolaze obuku, instrukcije, poduku ili tečaj o uređajima B-WIC i B-SMC moraju biti pod stalnim nadzorom iskusnog rukovatelja prilikom rada s opremom. Ispitivanje uređajima B-WIC i B-SMC mora biti u skladu s unutarnjim sigurnosnim uputama i dodatnim relevantnim dokumentima.

A B-WIC és a B-SMC készülékkel végzett vizsgálatok során be kell tartani a belső biztonsági utasításokat és a további vonatkozó dokumentumokban foglaltakat.
