Fathers and mothers need more concrete and practical information on legal drugs (alcohol, tobacco...) and illegal ones: their effects, how to prevent abuse, how to communicate with their children and how to gain access to information and couselling.

We shall carry on with the seminaries, conferences and workshops on this topic.

The majority of surveyed currently live with their parents, who are homeowners. 20% are tenants: this group is constituted by students who share an apartment and the rent expenses with other students. Finally, 4,5% live in halls of residence.

75,5% have a room of their own where they are currently living.

11% of the mothers and 15,5% of the fathers have no qualifications, they do not have a Primary School Certificate, they cannot be considered illiterate but hold no official school diploma. As for the rest of parents, the situation is as follows:

55,5% of the young people who were surveyed trust their teachers and talk to them about their problems at school. This case applies to almost all students at primary and compulsory secondary schools.

46,5% occasionally talk to their friends about their problems.

40% spend time with their friends outside the home, and 37,5% only occasionally. These percentages are understandable and normal if we take into account those students who no do live at their parents´ and the fact that we are surveying a rural area.

On the other hand, 80% of the surveyed do not go to cafés, cybercafés or other leisure spaces after school. This is due to several reasons: ▫ They have to travel to other towns in order to find a leisure space. ▫ They have low purchasing power.

Asociación de Mujeres Progresistas, αgorα

98% reported that none of their friends ever forced them into drug abuse. 95,5% do not smoke nor drink alcohol. 69% reported that the most popular people in their groups no dot smoke nor drink. 89% are not unhappy with their parents´ attitude towards them.

60% do not skip school, 30% clearly report that their parents do not know whether they go to class or not. In order to understand these facts, we must keep in mind that school attendance is controlled at primary schools, compulsory secondary schools and high schools by means of a programme which allows teachers to communicate with parents. All university students came out of age, class attendance is therefore not compulsory for them.

“No smokers were reported for one half of the households.

In 66% of the households, no family members drink alcohol.

Half of the surveyed do not feel affected by problems at home.

The answers on their parents´ attitude are more homogeneous:▫ 45% feel that their parents do not understand them▫ 33% do not feel understood sometimes▫ 22% agree with the statement “My parents understand me”

In 73% of the cases, it seems that there are no economic problems at home and the surveyed feel satisfied with what their parents provide them.

68% of the surveyed show adequate performance at school.

Sometimes they do not know how to spend their leisure time. 45% report that they do not know how to face this situation. Again, we must remember that they live in a small town with few resources for young people.

Only 6.5% occasionally feel unhappy.

11% occasionally smoke.

20% occasionally drink. 22% of the surveyed do not know how to give up bad habits (alcohol, tobacco, etc.). 66,5% do not know the pernicious effects of health-damaging habits. 82% report to be happy with their life; the rest report that they occasionally feel happy with it.

55% take part in extracurricular activities. This is relatively easy for those attending primary and compulsory secondary schools, as the Spanish education system provides with this kind of activities. The situation changes when an extracurricular activity is not offered at school or at high school.

71% would like seminaries at their school that dealt with the pernitious effects of drugs, drug-abuse prevention, etc.

Their opinion changes if the seminaries are addressed to their parents. One half of the students agreed with this measure, the other half did not. We therefore ask themselves whether the surveyed feared that their parents could thus exert stricter control over them.

The fact that the young people surveyed live in a rural area has determined some of their answers. This changes if we ask university students who do not live at home.

Most of the surveyed were in favour of informative seminaries.

We shall propose workshops addressed to young people of different ages. We shall work with psychopedagogues in order to organize these sessions.
