SUMMARY

The purpose of the present studywas to investigate and analyse the teaching of St.Gregory, bishop of Nyssa, in connection with apathy and the passions. Among thepassions,specialemphasiswasgiventothenatureandfunctionofthepassionofdesire,duetoitsprominentpositionintheologyaswellasintheworkoftheHolyFather.Thisstudyreachedthefollowingmainconclusions:

1.AsaqualityofGod,apathyisdynamicasitreflectsthemeredynamismofspiritandtheactiveinternalcompletenessoftheTrinitarianlife.Theapathyofmanbeforethefall,beingtheresultofhisparticipationintheapathyofGod,constitutesahighlyactiveandcombative force, a harmoniously rich and prolific equalizer that does not sacrifice oreliminate the body and the senses. It is synonymous with intellectual freedom andindependenceofspirit,yetdoesnotexcludepleasure(in itspureand immaterialform),nor the passion itself that is spiritual and apathetic. Throughmans fall, the passionviolently entered into human nature, as an illogical and brutal element and startedundermining it.Apathywas lost and its recovery after the fall ispossible through anongoingspiritualbattleofturningthenegativepassionsintopositiveandusefulelementsforhumanlife.

2.Theessenceof thesoul ismentaland logic,yet theunionof thesoulwith thebodygivesadditionalactivitiestoitsstructure:desireandanger,thatareunfairlycalledsoul,as theydonot belong to its essence, but constitute additions and encrustations to theunited, indivisible,mental and logichuman soul, that is created in the image ofGod.Theseelementsareplacedinanimaginaryborderpointbetweenthesoulandbody,fromwhichtheyinclineasmovementstowardsthegoodoritscontrary,dependingonhowtheyareused.Thedistortionofthenatureandthepurposeofthepassionsoriginatesand finds itsexcuse in thedressingafter the fallof the leathermantles thatcarried intothemthewildcharacteristicsoftheillogicalnature.Theintroductionofthebrutalwayofreproduction into human nature, was the gate through which entered the illogicalpassions, now used asways ofmaintenance and survival ofman in the after the fallsavageworld.However, evennowwe cannot exclude theparticipation,under certainconditions,ofpassionsinthelifeintheimageofGod.

3.TheendlessdesireforthenobleistheonlywaytoberaisedtowardsGodasbeforethenonpresumedofthedivinenature,theintellectofmanstandsstill.Godisbeyondclearunderstandingandhidden inhis invisiblenatureoffers to thesoula senseofhispresence.Whilephysicalbeauty attractsdesire throughgentlenessof the appearance,ease,diffusionandblandness, thesensationofgreatandamazingcourageconstitutesa

prominent featureandanattractionof the immortaldivinebeauty.Inorder toadvancethehumanpassionontotheimaginaryandintangiblevisionofthegood,thepowerofthedesireof the soulmustbe trained and refined.The ascetic teaching and thenobleteaching introduced by the Song of Songs are the securemethods throughwhich thedesire,clearedfromanynegativeattitudes,gainsascendingtendenciesthusbecomingasinequanonconditionfortheintellectualdevelopmentofman.

4.The traineddesire is transformed into apathetic and irreproachablepassion,whichelaborates theunityof thesoulwithGodand then flows into thesoul,notcoveringanexistinggap,butaddingtoitsspiritualrange,expandingthesoultoitslimits,whicharethelimitsoftheperishablehumannatureunitedtothebody.Thepowerofdesireofman,having led througha seriesofgrades (onedesirecameafteranother) the finitehumannaturetoextremelimits,hascompleteditswork,givingsoulwhatitdesired.Thepurifiedsoul united with God through love, reaches the nature of no need, according to itsstrength.Asitcannotdesireanymore,itdismissesthedesiringmovementanddisposal,whichexistsonlywhenthedesired isnotpresent.Inthisfinalstate,thefunctionofthedesirecomestoanend,isexceededandreplacedbythedominanceofpleasure.

5.Throughhisincarnatedlife,theLordconstitutedamodelofproperuseofthedesiringpowerofthesoul.TheapatheticpassionofthesoultowardsChristisamereresponsetothepassion thatHe feels for the soul.Afterdeath, thepassions thatwilldominate theresurrected human nature are derivatives of the transformed desire, the same thatenrichedwith theirdynamism theapatheticstateofmanbefore the fall.As thehumannaturethenwillnotbelimitedneitherbythefinitelimitsoftheperishablebodynorbythe limits setby the evil, the desirewillnot reflectanymore the lackor theneed tofulfillavoidbutwillexpresstheendlessand imperturbablemovementoftherecreatedmanthatendlesslymovesuptowardsthegoodsofGod.
