MEET: Josh Barnes LIVES ON: Goodrich Ave YEARS IN P.P.: 7 years

MEET: Ellen Prusinski LIVES ON: Suburban Court YEARS IN P.P.: 6 years Originally from Cleveland, Ellen earned her degrees at Grinnell College (BA) and Indiana University (MPA and PhD). A Fulbright scholarship supported her dissertation research, focused on human rights education for migrant women, in Indonesia. She also spent two years teaching English in China. In 2013, she and husband Garrett moved to Suburban. He took a faculty position (Photography) with UK. Since 2014, Ellen has been with Centre College, in the Education Department. Her research interests are gender and community-based learning, e.g., she has studied the links between feeling safe at school, academic achievement, and gender. It won’t be for a while, as the couple now has a toddler (Lowell), but at some point Ellen would like to live and study abroad again. Now, however, she very much enjoys the friendly neighborhood, bringing up Lowell, and nearby amenities (such as Good Foods Co-op).

IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD…(each month we interview 3 people in the neighborhood, see their full interviews @ pensacolapark.org \

MEET: Mareth Gillespie LIVES ON: Penmoken Park YEARS IN P.P.: 31 years

Born in Chicago, Mareth and her family moved to Louisville when she was 13 years old. After high school, she moved to Lexington to attend UK. Her degree in Social Work led to a 34-year career as a caseworker working to help vulnerable people, such as drug addicts, the mentally ill, and victims of sexual abuse, become self-sufficient. After retiring in 2012, Mareth has continued to serve the community, volunteering with the Democratic Party and Faith Pharmacy. Mareth has a daughter, Alexandra, who is a speech pathologist in Louisville. Her husband, Gerry, is a gifted musician. In addition to the cats that have been part of her life (she currently has three), the family had a saddle-bred horse, which was dearly loved. Since 1988, the friendliness of the neighborhood, the coziness of her home, and the lovely backyard have made Penmoken the place she wants to be.

Born and raised in Lexington, Josh began working part-time at Georgetown College when he was a student at Dunbar. The Cincinnati Bengals had their summer training camp there, and Josh began helping maintain the athletic fields. Upon completing high school, the job became full-time. At age 21, he accepted a position as Assistant Sports Turf Manager at UK. In addition to maintaining beautiful fields, he is proud of the students he has successfully mentored. A self-proclaimed nerd, Josh likes playing video games, watching sports (professional football, softball, ice hockey), and reading comics – Batman, Superman, and others. He, wife Candice, and son Alex like the neighborhood’s friendly atmosphere. Josh said that he almost expects to see Opie Taylor walking down the street. It’s that comfortable and nice. While it will likely be hard to leave the neighborhood, at some point Josh would like to operate a food truck on Maui.

ADOPT-A-TREE : THE MILLION GALLON CHALLANGE Help the Urban Forest Initiative reach their goal of adopting enough trees to fill the Million Gallon challenge storm water gauge. Why Lexington? The majority of urban trees in Lexington are on private property, and due to this all of our yards make up the urban forest. These urban trees help intercept and slow down rainfall in its canopy, which is especially important to Lexington, which currently suffers from having its grey water infrastructure (eg storm drains) be overwhelmed with rain water. So, how can you help?

1. Adopt a tree in your yard. Particularly your favorite one! 2. Measure the circumference of its trunk 4.5 feet from the ground, and take a photo of tree! 3. Go online and complete the application @ https://ufi.ca.uky.edu/adopt-a-tree

Once you fill in the info, you will be able to find out the individual benefits of your tree and you will inform the Urban Forest Initiative how many trees are servicing Lexington as a whole.
