A FEW WORDS ABOUT GREECE

Greece is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Western Asia, and Africa. Greece has the longest coastline on the Mediterranean Basin and the 11th longest coastline in the world. Greece has a Mediterranean climate. Greece is divided into continental and island with 1500 islands , which are located in the blue waters of the Aegean and Ionian Sea. In geographical map it appears as a small piece of land , but in reality Greece is a country of endless beaches, which everyone discovers for himself again and again . It has a long and rich history which brought great cultural influence to three continents . It is the birthplace of democracy and philosophy . Yet Greece is the birthplace of the Olympic Games, drama , tragedy and comedy .Greece has a fantastic Mediterranean cuisine , which consists of meats and exotic seafood dishes .

The Parthenon is the most important and characteristic monument of the ancient Greek civilization and still remains its international symbol

Delphi, the home of the Oracle . Delphi was considered by the ancients to be the centre of the world and the holiest of all the holy sites.

Ancient Olympia

The High Priestess of the Flame-lighting Ceremony in Ancient Olympia lights the Olympic flame at a rehearsal before the Lighting Ceremony for the Olympic Games in ancient Olympia.

Olympia, the sanctuary of Zeus and birthplace of the Olympic Games, lies in a verdant valley of the western Peloponnese at the confluence of the rivers Alpheios and Kladeos. A landscape of great natural beauty, the whole valley was in ancient times thickly wooded and full of wild olive trees, from the leaves of which were made the wreaths that crowned the Olympian champions; hence the site was named Altis, meaning grove. It was also named Olympia after Mt Olympus, the abode of Zeus. The Temple of Zeus, which once housed the Golden and Ivory statue of Zeus (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World)

The project, "the diamond of Olympia", represents Hermes, the messenger of the gods,with the small Dionysos trying to get something from his hand.

Knossos Palace

Knossos is the most important and best preserved palace of the Minoan Civilization. It is located nearby Heraklion in Crete and is connected to the myths of the Labyrinth with the Minotaur and the story of Icarus.(7000 BC)

Mycenae is one of the richest archaeological sites in the world and a brilliant tribute to the great Mycenaean culture . According to the legend , the famous city walls were built by the Cyclops because of the size and weight of the stones used.

Knossos Palace

Above the town of Kalambaka, northeast of Thessaly, rock formations are straight out of a science fiction movie. Many geologists and historians have tried to unravel how these stone pedestals were created 60 million years ago, but no theory has been proven. Today, this region is considered historical patrimony by UNESCO, called Meteora, which means “suspended in the air.”

The monastery of Simon Peter or Simonopetra is the monastic state of Mountain Athos, the eastern peninsula of Halkidiki .. It is built on the top of a huge solitary rock , practically hanging off a cliff 330 meters above the sea .

Easter manners and customs from all over Greece Easter is the most important

feast of Orthodoxy .Women dye their eggs red , grandparents buy new clothes for their grandchildren and godparents shoes and candles . In the province the houses and the streets are whitewashed .On Good Friday, the faithful follow the procession of floral-decorated Sepulchre of Christ in the streets .On Saturday they celebrate the Resurrection and everyone puts on his best to go to church . At midnight , however, a priest shows upcarrying the Holy Fire and distributes to the faithful while singing "Christ has risen ".The faithful slowly depart to eat with their family the traditional Magiritsa , the Easter brioche and crack the eggs dyed red .The next day everyone impales lambs,drink ouzo and wine, sing and dance.

Christmas manners and customs from all over Greece

Caroling is part of the Greek Christmas tradition. carol is called Kalanta or Kalanda in Greek. Kids go out caroling on Christmas Eve,New Year’s Eve and Epiphany Eve (January 5th).

New Year, every family cuts her own pie, which means hiding a coin. The pie is usually cut into equal pieces for each family member, from the smallest to the biggest. The one who gets the slice with the hidden coin is considered to have a very good year.

At the Christmas table, the Christmas bread is blessed as this will support the life of the household and the family’s. They cut it on Christmas Day, giving many blessings.

In towns and villages in the morning of Epiphany, the traditional blessing of the waters is performed, diving the Holy Cross, to commemorate the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. Several adventurous swimmers defy low temperatures and plunge into seas, rivers and reservoirs to catch the cross and receive the blessing of the priest.

Pyrgos is a city in western Peloponnese and the capital of the prefecture of Iia. The City of Pyrgos is built on seven hills and is 5km from the sea, 19 km from Ancient Olympia and 315 km from Athens .It is the administrative and commercial center of the region .The seaport is Katakolon.

The history of the city of Pyrgos Pyrgos appears as a city in 1687, with the war between Venetians and Turks. The founder of the modern city, Tsernotas, built on the hill of Eparcheion a large tower and from there the town got its name. In ancient times an important center was the city Elis who oversaw the Olympic Games. In the 19th and 20th century, Pyrgos became a crossroad of raisin trade.

Mercouri Estate "The road to the magical world of wine"

⦿ The Mercouri Estate, one of the oldest estates in Greece, located in an area of outstanding natural beauty , in Korakochori , near Katakolon ( 2km). It is an old , large farm , with 140 years history in producing wine , olive oil and oldest currants. Here the vines are in a single, large, flat vineyard right next to the sea.Here the saltiness, the cool night breeze and sandy soil contribute to the wine. Today, the varieties grow on the estate and the wines produced from them have managed to win a total of 14 countries in the global market with many awards each year.

It is a popular stop for cruise ships, offering an opportunity for passengers to visit the site of Ancient Olympia. Katakolo is a seaside town in the municipality of Pyrgos in western Elis, Greece.

Katakolo combines mountain and sea, as it is the current port of the preference’s capital, the city of Pyrgos. The port is full of cafeterias and taverns which replaced the old raisin houses, giving a traditional tone to the area.
