Estate Planning Presentation:

on Sunday,

April 15, in the

social hall fol-

lowing Divine

Liturgy, an Es-

tate Planning

seminar will be

led by attorney

Robert Chandler who assists families

and individuals with their estate

planning needs, including directing

the appropriate disposition of assets,

tax minimization, incapacity plan-

ning, and probate avoidance. He

counsels regarding integration of

assets (e.g. life insurance policies,

retirement accounts, business inter-

ests, and real property) into a com-

prehensive wealth transfer plan. Ad-

vanced planning needs of some cli-

ents involve sophisticated tools and

techniques. These include transfer of

wealth through lifetime gifting, cre-

ation of insurance trusts, charitable

split interest trusts, special needs

trusts, and generation skipping

transfers. Mr. Chandler has over 40

years of legal experience and was a

guest speaker in the 2016 St. George

Lenten Lecture Series.

Festival of Nations (FON)

May 3-6: running for 86 years,

helping others discover our world

and its cultural diversity,

www.festivalofnations.com. St.

George community has been in-

volved from the beginning. This event is

a fun way to celebrate a culture that

many parishioners share and the pro-

ceeds benefit our church and its minis-

tries. Please join us by volunteering at

the Greek Café. Roles inc. move in, set-

up, food prep, server, clean up, break-

down, move-out. Use Sign-Up Genius to

volunteer: www.tinyurl.com/2018FON-

Greek or contact Tom Lampros. The dates

avoid Easter and Mothers’ Day this year

so we are expecting some good crowds.

Updated Directories Available

Soon: new parish member directories

will print family street/mailing address-

es, phone numbers (including cell) and

email addresses that are currently in the

church database. If you do NOT want

any of these to be published, please con-

tact the church office by April 9 to indi-

cate which should be “unlisted.”

Why Fish for Funeral Makaria/

Luncheon? Fish is the traditional and

appropriate main dish for four reasons:

1) fish is the ancient symbol for being a

Christian because the ancient word

ΙΧΘΥΣ is the acronym for Jesus Christ

God's Son Savior see https://

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichthys), 2) Jesus

called Peter and Andrew to become

"fishers of men" (Mt. 4:18; Mark 1:17), 3)

broiled fish is the meal that Jesus ate

after His Resurrection (Luke 24:42), 4)

Fish is an acceptable fasting food

(during fasting periods) as a concession

to the pastoral circumstances of a funer-

al (see https://orthodoxwiki.org/

Fasting). If a funeral takes place within

Great and Holy Lent, no cheese/dairy is

allowed. However, wine, like fish, is

allowed by concession.

Social Hall & Kitchen Notice: re-

minder to ministry leaders, please check

with the office in advance to make sure

that it isn’t already booked before plan-

ning to use the social hall or kitchen.

Reservations must be confirmed by Fa-

ther Rick who manages the official

church calendar. If your group would

like to host social hour on a specific Sun-

day, please contact Naomi Tsantir (612-

781-6485) to be added to the fellowship

schedule.

Parish Council Update: The Parish

Council approved a proposal, at the

February meeting, to improve the sound

system in the: sanctuary, choir loft, so-

cial hall and lower level hallway. Thank

you to Milam Paraschou for designing a

plan to enhance sound projection and

tonal quality, while reducing feedback.

The total cost is $6,300. An anonymous

donation has been made for the first

$2,500 and the Council wants to raise an

additional $1,500. The remaining funds

will come from capital improvements.

Please contact Alexis Bighley at abigh-

[email protected] if you would like to con-

tribute.

Parishioners interested in trying their

hand at ushering will have an oppor-

tunity to attend a brief training on April

22, following Divine Liturgy. If you are

looking for a way to serve the church

and meet your fellow church goers, this

is your chance. For more information,

contact Diane Anastos.

come. We thank you for supporting the

ministries of our parish!

Letter from the Youth Minister:

To our Beloved Community,

I hope everyone is having a blessed

Lenten Season. It is such a blessing to see

the community worshiping together and

enjoying fellowship after Divine Liturgy.

Everyone is so kind and vibrant that it is

such a joy to see everyone coming to-

gether.

On March 3rd we had our annual Len-

ten Retreat where the adults had a Len-

ten lecture in the social hall while I had

activities and lesson plans prepared for

the children. To my surprise, the chil-

dren preferred to sit in with the adults. It

was so wonderful! Others preferred find-

ing a nice quiet place to work on home-

work, or just relax in the vicinity. I was

very proud of each and every one of

them. Orthodoxy is not just one shared

religion that we all gravitate toward, it is

much more of a way of life. Seeing the

children comfortable to relax at St.

George and integrate it in their lives.

On March 17th, our GOYA youth group

visited and volunteered at Feed My

Starving Children, where they created

meal packages that are sent around the

world to server hungry children. It was

great to see all the participation we had!

Not only that, we were but only one

group there. The entire place was

packed, even though it was St. Patrick’s

Day! Together that night, we packed 232

boxes of food. This came to a grand total

of 50,112 meals. Wow!

Finally, I wanted to say thank you to

all the children who participated in this

year’s Oratorical Festival. I though eve-

ryone put in a lot of effort into making

the event a great success! The kids did so

wonderful. Our pre-school through 3rd

grade all sang the Trisagion hymn. The 4

-6 graders all showed their crafts that

they are selling for fundraiser donations.

And the Junior and Seniors presented

their presentations based on a topic of

their choice. Thank you especially to the

teachers for helping make this happen.

They have dedicated time out of their

Sunday School time to help prepare their

students. Thank you so much!

In Christ,

From the Parish Council President Alexis Bighley

Dear Fellow Parishioner,

There is good news on St George 's investment earnings for 2017. We have two investment accounts, one of which is for opera-

tions of the church, and the other, a restricted donor account. The total dollars and earnings in those accounts for 2017 are:

end cash balance $ 245,397, earning 10.36%

Special thanks to the Investment Committee: Jim Theros, Jon Kennedy and George Mastrogiorgis for excellent oversight.

Please feel free to contact me if you would enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of serving on any committees for St. George. I look forward to

seeing everyone at the Parish Assembly meeting on Sunday, April 29, where we will serve a light lunch.
