The extension of Greece in Thessaly (1881), required the demarcation of new borders, which was reflected in a proposal by the English Commissioners of scale 1: 50,000, led by British major K. Ardagh. The map of the new Greek-Turkish borders was printed in 1881 and 1882 in London by the War Office. It consisted of 35 parts of paper 46.5 X 60 cm. The series was adopted on November 17, 1881 (six months after signing the contract) by the eight commissioners of Germany, Austro-Hungary, France, Britain, Greece, Italy, Russia and Turkey and the prototypes remained at the files of the French embassy in Istanbul. The “Map of K. Ardagh" entitled "Carte de la nouvelle frontière turco-grecque", 1881, measures 240 X 360 cm. It belongs to the collection of the Academy of Athens and was given for conservation on 15th July 2013. It consisted of 35 parts assembled together.

Lined with cotton textile, it had two wooden elements allowing the suspension. Loose and engrained dirt covered it’s surface.

The paper itself was particularly oxidized, weakened and brittle because of the acidity. It was fragmented into small pieces which were held only by the cloth lining. There were many losses. The paper was creased and cockled.

The map was so fragile that did not allow to be transferred from where it had been carried and unwound by the archivists. Α preliminary facing in situ was necessary.
