Zara (retailer) Zara (Spanish: [ˈθaɾa]) is a Spanish clothing and ac- cessories retailer based in Arteixo, Galicia, and founded in 1975 by Amancio Ortega and Rosalía Mera. It is the flagship chain store of the Inditex group, the world’s largest apparel retailer. The fashion group also owns brands such as Massimo Dutti, Pull and Bear, Uterqüe, Stradivarius, Oysho and Bershka. It is claimed that Zara needs just two weeks to develop a new product and get it to stores, compared to the six- month industry average, and launches around 10,000 new designs each year. Zara has resisted the industry-wide trend towards transferring fast fashion production to low- cost countries. Perhaps its most unusual strategy was its policy of zero advertising; the company preferred to in- vest a percentage of revenues in opening new stores in- stead. This has increased the idea of Zara as a “fashion imitator” company and low cost products. Lack of adver- tisement is also in contrast to direct competitors such as Uniqlo and United Colors of Benetton. Zara was described by Louis Vuitton Fashion Director Daniel Piette as “possibly the most innovative and devas- tating retailer in the world.” Zara has also been described as a “Spanish success story” by CNN. 1 Origins and history

Amancio Ortega opened the first Zara store in 1975 in acentral street in downtown La Coruña, Galicia, Spain.[3]Ortega named his store Zorba after watching the classicfilm Zorba the Greek, but apparently there was a bar thatwas called the same, Zorba, two blocks away, and theowner of the bar came and said, “this is going to confusethings to have two Zorbas.” They had already made themolds for the letters in the sign, so they just rearrangedthem to see what they could find, and they found Zara, which leaves fans wondering where the additionalA camefrom, but there is speculation that they had more thanone set of letters.[4] The first store featured low-pricedlookalike products of popular, higher-end clothing fash-ions. 3 Manufacturing and distribution

Zara is a vertically integrated retailer. Unlike similar ap-parel retailers, Zara controls most of the steps on thesupply-chain, designing, manufacturing, and distributingits products.[2] Zara set up its own factory in La Coruña(a city known for its textile industry) in 1980, and up-graded to reverse milk-run-type production and distribu-tion facilities in 1990. This approach, designed by ToyotaMotor Corp., was called the just-in-time (JIT) system. Itenabled the company to establish a business model thatallows self-containment throughout the stages of materi-als, manufacture, product completion and distribution tostores worldwide within just a few days.[7]

Regarding the design strategy, an article in Businessworldmagazine[8] describes it as follows: “Zara was a fashionimitator. It focused its attention on understanding thefashion items that its customers wanted and then deliv-ering them, rather than on promoting predicted season’strends via fashion shows and similar channels of influ-ence, which the fashion industry traditionally used.50% of the products Zara sells aremanufactured in Spain,26% in the rest of Europe, and 24% in Asian and Africancountries and the rest of the world.[9] So while some com-petitors outsource all production to Asia, Zara makes its

most fashionable items—half of all its merchandise—ata dozen company-owned factories in Spain and Portugal, particularly in Galicia and northern Portugal where labouris somewhat cheaper than in most of Western Europe.Clothes with a longer shelf life, such as basic T-shirts,are outsourced to low-cost suppliers, mainly in Asia andTurkey.[10]

Zara can offer considerably more products than similarcompanies. It produces about 11,000 distinct items an-nually compared with 2,000 to 4,000 items for its keycompetitors. The company can design a new product andhave finished goods in its stores in four to five weeks;it can modify existing items in as little as two weeks.Shortening the product life cycle means greater successin meeting consumer preferences.[11] If a design doesn'tsell well within a week, it is withdrawn from shops, fur-ther orders are canceled and a new design is pursued.Zara relies on sophisticated information technology, suchas PDAs with wireless transmission capabilities, in thehands of store managers, to monitor customers’ ficklefashion changes.[12] Zara has a range of basic designs thatare carried over from year to year, but some fashion for-ward designs can stay on the shelves less than four weeks, which encourages Zara fans to make repeat visits. An av-erage high-street store in Spain expects customers to visitthree times a year. That goes up to 17 times for Zara.[13]

On September 6, 2010, Financial Times reported thatInditex launched the first online boutique for its best-selling brand Zara. The website will begin in Spain, the UK, Portugal, Italy, Germany and France—six coun-tries that are among the most important of the company’s76 markets. When asked about the company’s late ar-rival to internet retailing, Pablo Isla, chief executive, saidthey have been waiting for online demand to build be-fore launching into cyberspace. All items on sale at itsZara outlets would be available online and at the sameprices. Customers can choose from the usual range ofpaying methods and opt either for a free store pick-up orpaid-for postal delivery. The online return and exchangepolicy is identical to the store system, with shoppers given

30 days to change their minds. Queries will be handled bycustomer service operators or via e-mail or chat messag-ing. Inditex said that iPhone and iPad applications thatallowed purchasing would soon be available.[14]

On November 4, 2010, Zara Online extended the ser-vice to five more countries: Austria, Ireland, the Nether-lands, Belgium and Luxembourg.[15] Online stores willbegin operating in the United States and South Korea in2011.[16] The simple website allows shoppers to filter asearch for garments by; type of garment, colours, sizes, prices, reference number, etc. Customers can view prod-ucts in precise detail from different angles and use a Su-perZoom feature to get an exceptional close-up look atthe details of each item.[15]

In 2011, Zara entered the Australian market with a threestory, 1400sqm store in the Westfield Sydney complexopened on April 21, 2011 and a second three story1800sqm store at Bourke Street Mall Melbourne whichopened on 15 June 2011.[17][18][19] Zara will open its thirdAustralian store in November 2011 at Burnside VillageShopping Centre in Adelaide, South Australia. It will beAustralia’s largest at 2,300sqm, and modelled on the de-sign of their Fifth Avenue, New York store.[20]

In November 2011, Zara entered the South African mar-ket with a flagship store in the upmarket suburb of Sand-ton, in Sandton City Shopping Complex, Johannesburg. In March 2012, Zara opened their second store in SouthAfrica, at Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Durban. Laterin 2012, a third store was opened in Cape Town at theVictoria & Alfred Waterfront mall.

3.1 Toxic-free production

In 2011, Greenpeace started a dialog with Zara toban harmful toxins from the clothing production.[21]In November 2012, Greenpeace published the “Toxicthreads: the big fashion stitch-up” report, in whichZara was identified as the worst polluter.[22] In 6 of the10 clothes that were examined, nonylphenol ethoxylateswere found, and in 2 cases cancer-inducing amines fromazo dyes were found.[23] After this publication, Zara waschosen as an example as biggest retailer in the worldto raise awareness. Multiple protests were held at Zarashops all over the world,[21] demanding Zara to comeup with an ambitious plan to detox its clothes and valuechain.[24]

After 9 days of intense public pressure, Zara decided toswitch to a fully toxic-free production.[21] The fashion re-tailer promised to stop discharging toxins for its clothingproduction,[25] which also affects 7 other brands in theInditex Group: Pull & Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka,Stradivarius, Oysho, Zara Home and Üterque. Some ofthe most damaging toxins will be refrained of earlier, for example PFC’s will be banned by 2015. Zara alsopromised to make information about its suppliers dis-charging of toxins publicly available for at least 100 sup-

pliers (at least 40 of which are located in China) by theend of 2013. With this commitment, Zara follows Nike,Adidas, Puma, H&M, Marks & Spencer, C&A and Li-Ning, who implemented a Detox-policy as well.[21]

3.2 Human rights concerns

On August 16, 2011, a Brazil television show called ALiga (of the Bandeirantes TV network) accused the com-pany of using suppliers who were running sweatshops fortheir outsourced production.[26] The following day, theRegional Superintendency of Labour and Employment ofSão Paulo, Brazil, closed a factory that produced Zara’sclothing for its poor labour conditions. Illegal Bolivianssewed clothes for 12–14 hours a day, earning about 1USD for each dress they sewed, although the retail pricein Brazilian stores was about 70 USD for the same dress. Many of the workers were forced into paying their wagesto human traffickers who had smuggled them into thecountry.[27][28] In a statement, Zara’s representatives saidthat the accusations of slave labour made against the re-tailer represent a “serious breach in accordance with theCode of Conduct for External Manufacturers and Work-shops of Inditex.” They also countered that all factoriesresponsible for unauthorized outsourcing have been askedto regularize immediately the situation of the workers in-volved. “The Inditex group, along with Brazil’s Ministryof Work, will strengthen the supervision of the produc-tion system of all its suppliers in the country to ensurethat such cases do not occur again.”[29]

OnMarch 21, 2012, the Swedish investigative journalismtelevision program Uppdrag Granskning (from SverigesTelevision) reported stories of 25 Zara employees, bothshop managers and staff, that testified about severe abuseand terror against Zara employees in Sweden and Europe.Zara’s representative responded that the company will in-vestigate and solve these problems. The union of shopworkers, Handels, responded that Zara had promised im-provement and was breaking its legal agreements andUnionen, which organises white-collar workers such asshopmanagers, called Zara’s management style “manage-ment by fear”.
