Do they save fuel or not? It can arouse more discussion than almost any other caravanning accessory, yet it is difficult to find someone who has tried a deflector not to agree that it is beneficial. Although not true of all past designs, testing over the years has revealed that some deflectors have done more harm than good. Aerodynamics is a very complex science and the way that people think air behaves is reflected in the various deflector designs which have been trialled. Because of the many different caravan and tow vehicle combinations, until now there has been no readily available formula or scientific data for calculating caravan deflector dimensions and their efficiency. However, a British caravan parts company, Purpleline, recently concluded a decade of research to develop a deflector — known as the Aeroplus — which is now available in Australia after undergoing extensive testing by the UK’s Motor Industry Research Association. The association is recognised as Britain’s leading automotive research body and its testing revealed the Aeroplus reduced drag — thus increasing handling and towing stability — and cut fuel costs, as well as reducing the number of bugs, caught in the draft, sticking to the front of the van. The British testing, which was subjected to very high wind forces, together with further road analysis in Australia, revealed much improved economy has been achieved. Fuel savings averaging 15 per cent or between $4.50 and $5 per 100km have been recorded, depending on the tow vehicle, van and fuel price. On a recent trip to Victoria using the Aeroplus, Perth resident Michael Pestwich said he saved between 10 and 15 per cent on fuel and the deflector made a significant reduction in the number of insects sticking to the front of his van. He also found the ride was much better. The MIRA tests were conducted under strict guidelines in a wind tunnel using an English Swift caravan and both BMW and Mazda tow vehicles The Aeorplus deflector, which is manufactured from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene can be easily installed by anyone who can tighten a knob-screw. It is secured at two points on a roof-rack bar as close to the back of the vehicle as possible. They can be fitted to most standard roof-rack bars, such as the Rola or Universal brands, and add only 0.3m to the vehicle height and weigh just 3.5kg. The overall width is 135cm, with the deflector height from the top of the roof-bar being 20cm. The designers say the speed of the vehicle when the deflector is fitted should not exceed 96km/h. Aeroplus gains tick of approval after 10 years of research WestWHEELS CARAVANS, CAMPING PETER POAT The Department of Environment and Conservation, together with adventure tour operator Global Gypsies, are offering environmentally conscious holiday makers an opportunity to assist with fauna research and monitoring projects while enjoying escorted outback tours. These science safaris to various outback parks and reserves are arranged by Global Gypsies, with DEC co-ordinating and supervising the various tasks for participants. The next safari will travel to Lorna Glen, a proposed conservation reserve about 165km from Wiluna, from April 20-27. The tour, which follows two similar safaris last year, will run as a tag-along trip, with vehicles travelling in a convoy led by accredited eco guide Jeremy Perks. There is a limit of 10 participants and they will need to have a robust four-wheel-drive vehicle equipped with two-way radios. They can bring off-road caravans, camper trailers or tents to use for accommodation. Two places are also available in the escort vehicle, which is equipped with recovery gear, GPS, a satellite phone and first-aid kit. As well as assisting the DEC with field work — which includes mulga and bilby monitoring and bird netting, fauna study and fence repairs — there will be plenty of time for relaxing with bushwalking, off-road excursions, photography and, for budding artists, sketching and painting. The cost is $2150 a person (driving own vehicle), which includes catering, camping fees, scientific activities and a donation to the DEC Rangelands Restoration Project. accessory, yet it is difficult to find someonewho has tried a deflector not to agree that itis beneficial.
Although not true of all past designs,testing over the years has revealed thatsome deflectors have done more harm thangood. Aerodynamics is a very complexscience and the way that people think airbehaves is reflected in the various deflectordesigns which havebeen trialled.
Because of themany differentcaravan and towvehiclecombinations, untilnow there has beenno readily availableformula or scientificdata for calculatingcaravan deflector dimensions and theirefficiency.
However, a British caravan partscompany, Purpleline, recently concluded adecade of research to develop a deflector —known as the Aeroplus — which is nowavailable in Australia after undergoingextensive testing by the UK’s MotorIndustry Research Association.
The association is recognised as Britain’sleading automotive research body and itstesting revealed the Aeroplus reduced drag— thus increasing handling and towingstability — and cut fuel costs, as well asreducing the number of bugs, caught in thedraft, sticking to the front of the van.
The British testing, which was subjectedto very high wind forces, together with
further road analysis in Australia, revealedmuch improved economy has beenachieved. Fuel savings averaging 15 percent or between $4.50 and $5 per 100km havebeen recorded, depending on the towvehicle, van and fuel price.
On a recent trip to Victoria using theAeroplus, Perth resident Michael Pestwichsaid he saved between 10 and 15 per cent onfuel and the deflector made a significantreduction in the number of insects stickingto the front of his van. He also found theride was much better.
The MIRA tests were conducted understrict guidelines in a wind tunnel using anEnglish Swift caravan and both BMW andMazda tow vehicles
The Aeorplus deflector, which ismanufactured fromacrylonitrile butadienestyrene can be easilyinstalled by anyonewho can tighten aknob-screw. It issecured at two pointson a roof-rack bar asclose to the back of thevehicle as possible.
They can be fitted tomost standard roof-rack bars, such as theRola or Universal brands, and add only 0.3mto the vehicle height and weigh just 3.5kg.
The overall width is 135cm, with thedeflector height from the top of the roof-barbeing 20cm.
The designers say the speed of the vehiclewhen the deflector is fitted should notexceed 96km/h. It can easily be removedwhen you are not using your vehicle to tow.

The Department of Environment andConservation, together with adventure touroperator Global Gypsies, are offeringenvironmentally conscious holiday makers anopportunity to assist with fauna research andmonitoring projects while enjoying escortedoutback tours.
These science safaris to various outbackparks and reserves are arranged by GlobalGypsies, with DEC co-ordinating andsupervising the various tasks for participants.
The next safari will travel to Lorna Glen, aproposed conservation reserve about 165kmfrom Wiluna, from April 20-27.
The tour, which follows two similar safarislast year, will run as a tag-along trip, withvehicles travelling in a convoy led byaccredited eco guide Jeremy Perks.
There is a limit of 10 participants and theywill need to have a robust four-wheel-drivevehicle equipped with two-way radios. They
can bring off-road caravans, camper trailers ortents to use for accommodation.
Two places are also available in the escortvehicle, which is equipped with recoverygear, GPS, a satellite phone and first-aid kit.
As well as assisting the DEC with field work— which includes mulga and bilby monitoringand bird netting, fauna study and fencerepairs — there will be plenty of time forrelaxing with bushwalking, off-roadexcursions, photography and, for buddingartists, sketching and painting.
The cost is $2150 a person (driving ownvehicle), which includes catering, campingfees, scientific activities and a donation to theDEC Rangelands Restoration Project.
