AutoAnalyzer ® brings speed and efficiency of chemical automation to M & Ρ Alkalinity tests . . . lets you run continuous analyses from moving streams quickly and reliably, or automatically analyze individual samples in the laboratory.

The new system can be used wherever M & Ρ Alkalinity tests are important. . . in quality control production... in countless industrial processing applications such as water treatment, pulp and paper, air carbonation, mining and many others.

*Detects and records other elements too, e.g.: aldehydes, ABS, chlorine, COD, toxic gases, etc. Over 100 fully automated determinations now possible, more are coming.

REPORT

within a few years, t ha t determination of chemical substances will be made periodically upon thousands of persons who are apparent ly well, in an effort to detect the earliest stages of cancer, arteriosclerosis, and other diseases. Indeed, in some states, plans have already been made, and are being implemented, to screen selected population groups for a specific congenital metabolic defect (phenylketonuria) , the ill effects of which have been shown to be part ial ly or wholly alleviated by the institution of early remedial measures. The systematic collection of such data, even if apparently unproductive a t first, is bound to increase the understanding of many illnesses, and, by facilitating early recognition of disease, will lead to early corrective therapy and reduced mortal i ty. Many of the clinical facilities required for such long-range studies already exist, but the development and expansion of such programs must await more numerous laboratory facilities. More important still, such programs must await the training of competent personnel who are skilled in the discipline of clinical chemistry.

Medicine, like other sciences, moves inexorably toward the determination of facts related to specific problems so tha t causes and cures may be established. A team approach is essential. As shown by Van Slyke, the chemist can make many valuable contributions.
