This is because the Divine Liturgy is a joyous celebration of theLord’s Resurrection, but Lent is a time of sorrow and repentance. As a spiritual help, the Churchallows us to receive communion during the weeks of Great Lent at a special service called theLiturgy of the Pre-sanctified Gifts. It is a service which consists of Great Vespers and holycommunion. The Holy Communion is prepared and consecrated on the previous Sunday. That ishow the service gets its name: Pre – before; in advance, sanctified – made holy; consecrated.

SUNDAYS OF LENTFrom Monday 18th March 2013 starts the Great Lent of our Church, which prepares us for Easter. The Holy Week is not part of the Great Lent of 40 days – it is in addition to the 40 days! All the Sundays of the Great Lent (five Sundays) have special meanings or are dedicated to aparticular Saint or event in the Church’s life. The First Sunday is “Sunday of Orthodoxy. It is the day we celebrate the return of icons to thechurch. At one time in the history of the Church, the emperor and his followers tried to abolishthe use of icons in the Church. They said that people were worshipping them as idols; theytherefore tried to abolish all veneration of icons. Finally, a large Church council was called wherethe leaders of the Church decided that the icons were an important part of our belief about JesusChrist. They defined the right way to use icons, saying that the icon should be honoured orvenerated, but not worshipped as an idol. The Second Sunday of Lent is dedicated to St Gregory Palamas. St. Gregory showed usthrough his own life and writings that it is possible for men to share in God’s glory through thegrace of the Holy Spirit. He taught us that through prayer and fasting we could participate in thelight and life of God’s Kingdom, even in this world. The Third Sunday of Lent focuses on the Veneration of the Cross. The Cross is placed in themiddle of the Church to remind us that Christ suffered and died in order to give us new life. TheCross reminds us that we are called upon to prepare ourselves to be worthy of receiving that newlife, even if it means that we also must suffer in order to do what God wants. The Fourth Sunday of Lent is dedicated to St. John of the Ladder because he wrote a set ofinstructions for living a Christian life. He said that the Christian life is a struggle; it is a fightagainst evil. He gave us suggestions on how to live in the right way an how to fight eviltemptations. Each step in the right direction is like rising a step on a ladder, so he called his bookThe Ladder of Divine Ascent, or the Ladder to the Kingdom. The Fifth Sunday of Lent is dedicated to St. Mary of Egypt, a young woman who lived a verysinful life, but repented sincerely and changed her way of life. She left her bad ways and went tolive in the desert. There, she spent the remainder of her life in prayer and fasting and repentingof her past deeds. She shows us in her life that we must be truly sorry for our sins if we wish toreturn to life with God. '. O. >

Upon the announcement of an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in January 2013, thefollowing articles have been received for publication in the Saint George

Community Newsletter.

INSPIRATION, ENCOURAGEMENT AND MENTORING…..Father Diogenis Patsouris is a person who has inspired, encouraged and been an example formany people, including me. From a young age I was captivated by his exemplary demeanorand his ability to worthily uphold the very difficult vocation of being an Orthodox Priest in avast community such as St George Thebarton. It is valid to say that many qualities contribute to the encouragement and inspiration that Fr Diogenis transfers to others. Hisaspiration for education and the fruition of one of his dreams that of the establishment and the successful 30-year journeyof St George College, alone serves as a worthy source of inspiration. In achieving this goal Fr Diogenis has provided manystudents, including myself, the opportunity to receive a multi-lingual and Orthodox faith-based education in a highlycomplex, ever growing multicultural Australia. This opportunity has permitted me to choose from a number of life pathways, which may have otherwise been difficult or impossible for me to have considered. Most assuredly the sacred vocation of the priesthood which I have been blessed with has as a fundamental core my educationat St George College and Fr Diogenis' direct encouragement, nurturing and support which he has provided to me from mychildhood and continues to do so. His willingness to offer advice and support when requested, has assisted me greatlyespecially in my new role as a Parish Priest. This has made the weight of the cross that I bear lighter enabling me to continuemy mission in a positive manner. As well as his advice and support Fr Diogenis has also been generous with the resourcesthat a newly ordained priest may require, and for these I sincerely thank him.Fr Diogenis' inspiration and example does not stop there. In my short ministry as an ordained clergyman, I haveencountered many parishioners and people in general who have been, in one way or another, assisted by Fr Diogenis. WhatFr Diogenis will never know is the countless times across Australia when I have been identified as an Orthodox Priest, thequestion that follows is "Do you know Fr Diogenis at the church at Thebarton?" This question has come from Greeks and non-Greeks alike.Fr Diogenis is memorable for people in so many ways - some of these are his generosity, his demeanor and his overallconcern for Greeks in Adelaide. These characteristics and many more, not only make Fr Diogenis a key leader in the GreekAustralian Orthodox community, simultaneously rendering him an instrumental asset to the wider Australian society. Therefore it is not surprising that he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the 2013 Australian Day HonorsUpon hearing the testimonials, and experiencing firsthand the positive contributions of Fr Diogenis Patsouris, a young priestlike me can only obtain inspiration and encouragement. Above all, Fr Diogenis has been instrumental in promulgating theGospel message to his Community not only by his instruction, but most importantly through his positive example. I take thisopportunity to thank him for everything he has done and does for me and wish him many more blessed years of ministry inour Lord's Vineyard.Fr Michael PsaromatisIwould like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Very Reverend Father Diogenis Patsouris upon receiving an Orderof Australia Medal. He truly deserves this medal as he is a person who is able to influence those around him in a positiveway! Leading by example, he is a great role model.I met Father Diogenis as a youngster whilst serving in the altar at St George Church - now I am proud to say that I workclosely with him as Head Chanter. Father Diogenis has been a role model for me since childhood. I have benefitedsignificantly in life through his mentoring and I am proud to say that as my Spiritual Father he has always been there for meand has given me sound advice on dealing with personal and religious issues.Through my Education at Saint George College I experienced first-hand the support and guidance he gives to students. As ateacher in the afternoon schools I gained many skills to improve my teaching ability. Now, as a teacher at Saint GeorgeCollege, I use those skills as a counsellor and mentor for others. I observe how the next generation of students, including ouroverseas students, admire Father’s dedication and appreciate his guidance. He is always there to support people in thegeneral community, but especially so when it comes to education.Father, Congratulations upon being a recipient of an OAM. I wish you many years of good health and happiness.

John Saredakis

Eight Welfare Centres exist; eightmonasteries; Womens’ Auxiliary/Philoptohes in almost every parish; Youth Programs within parishes in mostStates; Day Care Centres; University, Hospital, Police and Correctional Services chaplaincies; missionaryprograms; as well as regional organisations providing a range of specific services for their local people withspecial needs. The Congress commenced with a Concelebration of all Hierarchs conducted at Redfern on Sunday 19th January, followed by a reception in the Cathedral Hall. The evening Doxology service was at St Spyridon ChurchKingsford, in the presence of distinguished guests and delegates. The Congress was officially opened by theMinister for Tourism, Hon George Souris (representing the NSW Premier). Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroitrepresented His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew I and delivered His message, in English. At the official dinner there was a very pleasant and unexpected surprise when, through skype, PatriarchBartholomew delivered his speech in Greek whilst visually observing our church leaders, delegates andrepresentatives. Concurrently, Congress delegates saw and heard our Patriarch in “real time” on the huge videoscreen. On Monday 20th January, Archbishop Stylianos presented the Keynote Address with the topic “Let us run withendurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” (Heb. 12:1-2). The Financial Report for the Archdiocese was followed by presentations on each of the above groups.Deliberations of the issues raised within these reports were undertaken by committees. All the delegates tookpart in committee deliberations followed by a report with recommended actions for promulgation, in order forcontinuous improvement in these services during the next phase of the four-year cycle. It was evident that within the majority of the services/programs of our Church there are volunteers from allwalks of life including the professions – they are directors, members of boards or in the various social and churchprograms. We acknowledge their contribution and as everyone’s time is valuable, we encourage their continuedinvolvement.Nominations and elections were held for membership of the Archdiocesan Council which comprisesproportionate Clergy and Lay representation, based on the population and number of parishes in each State. ThisCouncil has the financial and administrative responsibility for the operations of the Archdiocese in Australiaunder the chairmanship of His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos. Voting by all delegates resulted in the SouthAustralian representatives being Very Rev Diogenis Patsouris, Very Rev Silouanos Fotineas and Messrs JohnKiosoglous, Evan Christou, Con Dalas and John DouvartzidisDelegates reported that this Congress was the most informative to date. There was commitment and passionevident in the delivery of reports as well as compassion and sensitivity for those requiring the services. Reportscontained some history and milestones, the current statistics and financials of the organisations, culminating inan outline of future plans for growth! Burning and sensitive issues raised by delegates were answered fully, inan honest and professional manner.Looking across the sea of faces at the conference (enhanced considerably by the use of audio and visualtechnology with large video screens) it was evident that there are many young enthusiastic people at the helm ofthe umbrella-organisations and parishes - this augurs well for our Church! Evident also was the strong

commitment of our elder statesmen and our mature priests of the 1960-80s (who worked tirelessly accompaniedby their presvyteres). They have indeed “run with endurance the race..” having contributed considerably bystruggling and paving the way, so that our Archdiocese can now harvest the toils of their labour! Thecontributions made are acknowledged and the youth are being supported and encouraged, as one group preparesto offer the baton and reins to the other. Our Archdiocese is truly a Church in action!Unfortunately, due to the pressures of busy life, the clergy and lay people do not have the time nor opportunityto reflect and communicate with counterparts in other States. Within this harmonious and relaxed environmentaway from the daily grind, old friendships were rekindled with interstate counterparts, important experiencesshared, common interest issues discussed and most importantly, new friendships created. This Congress actuallygave delegates the opportunity, during the short breaks and mealtimes, to reach out and touch somebody new, thereby starting another chain of events and friendships!Upon return to their home States the delegates reported the outcomes to their respective committees fordiscussion - outcomes confirmed by the circulars from the Archdiocese! Hopefully, there will now be anenergised and progressive programme being developed within each Community/Parish.Congratulations to the Organising Committee for developing and executing the tight program. Thanks to themany parishes for their financial contribution which enabled the daily operations to run smoothly; to the hostparishes for the evening meals and to those delegates who travelled from interstate. Most of all, thanks to StSpyridon Church and St Spyridon College for hosting the 11th Clergy/Laity Congress in Sydney. We pray for health and wisdom for Patriarch Bartholomew, our Primate Archbishop Stylianos and all our leadersas they guide us whilst we continue to “run with endurance the race that is set before us…”Presv Anna Patsouris

KNOWING OUR SAINTSAblissful couple standing before a priest ashe intones the beautiful prayerscontained in the sacrament of marriageare aware of the solemnity ofthe words but cannot grasp thereal significance of one of theprayers, unless they know thestory of the Forty Martyrs ofSebaste. It is over 1500 years since theprayers were introduced bythe Holy Fathers in themarriage ceremony. Thosewho have taken the trouble toask why the Forty Martyrs areinvoked in this sacrament heara sacred story which is bothtragic and beautiful and givesadded meaning to the occasion. The prayer “Remember them (the bride andgroom) O Lord, as thou didst thy Forty HolyMartyrs, sending down upon them crowns fromHeaven…” The symbolic crowns, with whichmany nervous “koumbaro/koumbara” havefumbled in the wedding ceremony, stems fromthe traditional crowns sent from Heaven for theholy martyrs and thereupon hangs one of themost poignant tales in church history. The story begins in the fourth century, duringthe reign of the cruel Emperor Licinius(A.D.320) when a group of forty young soldiersof the Roman army garrisoned in the city ofSebaste Armenia (located in north-easternTurkey) were deeply committed to the service ofJesus Christ, while finding it possible to servethe emperor in the devout country of Armenia, the first nation to proclaim Christianity as thereligion of the realm. They were courageous and

fiercely proud of their garrison as any paganarmy in Rome, but unlike others, they had foundthe truth of the word of Jesus Christ and livedaccordingly. They could beararms for their country andconcurrently worship the Princeof Peace – not too difficult toconceive today as there arechaplains in the national armedservices as well as within lawenforcement bodies! However, there were no chaplains at thattime to guide or support thespiritual needs of the forty youngmen of the Roman Army locatedat Sebaste. The forty young men acceptedChrist as their Savior on their owninitiative, knowing full well thatthey risked their personal safety - it was only amatter of time before Licinius became aware ofthe group. He immediately issued an edict thatthose who failed to worship the pagan godswould face punishment that could includetorture or death. As a result a contingent was sent from Rome toSebaste for the express purpose of bringing tojustice the forty soldiers of this Armeniangarrison, all of whom refused to disavow Christ. As a result, on a bitterly cold day the forty youngsoldiers were stripped naked and led to theshores of the lake where the frigid winds wouldeventually painfully freeze them to death. The forty young soldiers stood shivering in thecold whilst looking across to the warm fires ofthe pagans, to which they could go if they wouldonly deny Christ – the group determined tostand firm. However, one young man weakened

and started towards the warmth of the glowingfires but unfortunately died before he could reachthem. As death approached, a band of angels descendedfrom Heaven and placed crowns on the heads ofthe dying young soldiers, a spectacle which soovercame one of the pagan guards that he strippedhimself and rushed to die alongside thebridegrooms of Heaven! The defection of the latearrival from the group of pagans brought to fortythe number who died for Christ on that sombreday, replacing the solitary young man who died invain! It is for this reason that a prayer invoking the fortyyoung members of the Roman garrison is includedin the wedding rite as a symbol of the blessing of

Heaven for those who keep their faith in JesusChrist. It is also evident that a person can come toJesus Christ even later in life, providing they trulybelieve, as did the young pagan defector!Young couples are blessed with the special prayerto support and guide their pathway, so that theymay follow the examples set by the Prince ofPeace, and stay true to the teachings of our LordJesus Christ. The Church celebrates the holy death of the FortyMartyrs of Sebaste on 9 March - However, because9th March this year falls on Saturday of the Souls, the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste celebrations wereheld on Friday 8 March.Pres Anna Patsouris
