The research committee of the American Electroplaters' Society reported recently triat the porosity of electroplated nickel foil varies with the crystal structure of the deposit,. Since it has been generally conceded that wrought foils are less porous than similar clectrodeposited foils from commercial baths, this discovery may well prove "to be the cornerstone for improving t l ie corrosion resistance of nickel electro-deposits. Future researches on this subject will determine if nickel baths operating under commercial conditions can be modified to give a crystal structure with a n improved corrosion resistance.

He3 JFlaw Data DwrraW W. Osborne, Bernard Wein-

stock, and Bernard M. Abraham of the chemistry division of Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago, have determined that liquid He3 does not have a transition t o a superiluid state such as that exhibited by liquid l ie 4 . The rate of isothermal flow of liquid He3 was observed t o decrease nioiiotonically as the temperature was lowered. In contrast, the rate o>f flow of liquid He4 through the same channel was observed to decrease as the temperature was lowered, until the lambda, point of 2.19° K. ( - 4 5 6 ° F.) was reached, and below this point the rate rose very sliarply.

Since He3 is present in ordinary helium

only a.o one part in 10 million, experiments» involving the use of isotopically pure He3 previously have been impossible. However, the Argonne group was able to perform the research because of the availability of appreciable quantities of He3 of which the laboratory is the producer.

From the results obtained, it is clear that no superfluid transition occurs in He3

down to 1.05° K. ( - 4 5 7 . 8 ° F.).
