A potential ballot measure that may appear on the November ballot in Providence would require Providence hotels of 25 rooms or more to pay all hotel employees a minimum wage of $15 per hour. At this point, how do you feel about this proposal?

There are 10 hotels in Providence. Two hotels – the Omni and the Biltmore – pay their housekeepers around $15 an hour. This proposal would level the playing field for workers at all large hotels who do the same job.

Many Providence housekeepers start at $8.50 per hour, before taxes, which is less than some babysitters make. The initiative would amount to an approximately $1.85 increase in pay for each room a housekeeper cleans.

There are approximately 1000 Providence hotel workers. Most of them live in Providence. An increase in their wages would mean they have more money to invest in their homes and to spend in local businesses in their neighborhoods.

Only hotels that have 25 rooms or more will be covered by this initiative. Most are owned by large institutional companies that can afford to pay a minimum wage to their hotel workers. The initiative exempts small hotels and B&Bs.

If Providence raises the minimum wage to $15 per hour for hotel workers, visitors may stay in other cities where hotel prices are lower, which will hurt our tax revenue and we will lose jobs and convention business.

This proposition is being paid for by the labor unions who are just trying to give big hotels a headache so they will make their employees join the union and increase the amount of dues the union collects. Now these unions are pushing another job-killing policy that will hurt our struggling economy even more.

This ordinance also covers hotel restaurants which are not part of the hotel industry. Hotel restaurants will not be able to compete with free-standing restaurants like the ones in our community. Tipped workers such as bartenders, waiters, and waitresses already make good money and shouldn’t get $15 per hour on top of their tips.
