Reactions 1306 - 19 Jun 2010 S Peginterferon-α-2b Sensorineural hearing loss: case report A 60-year-old man, who had previously received interferon-α and ribavirin for 12 months, started receiving SC peginterferon-α-2b [Pegintron] 100 µg/week with ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C virus infection. He presented 42 weeks later with sudden right-sided tinnitus and deafness. Right ear hearing loss was noted at 0-90dB during audiometry, and sensorineural hearing loss was diagnosed. Peginterferon-α-2b was withdrawn, and a 10-day course of prednisolone was started. After this course, his hearing had almost normalised. Full recovery was observed 6 months later. Author comment: It is thought that treatment with peginterferon-α-2b requires careful observation of the hearing. Shin MK, et al.
