is responsible for the exquisite engraved composition in Pentelic marble on

the façade of the hilton Athens, as well as major interventions on its interior.

Peggy Zoumboulaki, whose gallery set a new course for art in Athens, was a

close friend of Moralis and many other influential artists, says in this issue: “his

work at the hilton symbolises many things: it depicts the goddess Athena, an

altar with offerings, flautists symbolising welcome, a horse and a boat. Symbol-

ism i find related to the Palimpsest, a manuscript or piece of writing material on

which ancient Greeks later superimposed or effaced earlier writing that none-

theless retained its essence.”

in this city, hospitality in the summer means many things, and most definitely

encompasses whatever dreams visitors have of Greece: islands and sea, fine

cuisine and the hidden treasures of Athens. The museums of the city, which host

both historical and contemporary creations, now aspire to holding visitors a little

longer in their warm embrace, with impeccable restaurants and cafés. Dionysiou

Areopagitou pedestrian walkway, under the watchful gaze of the Acropolis, is

perhaps one of the loveliest places for a stroll in Europe, while the Panathenaic

Stadium, the most ancient operational stadium of its kind is also one of the most

frequently visited sites in the capital.

it was our great pleasure to host the Antetokounmpo brothers, who are

living the ultimate American dream with a basketball in hand, and whose minds

never stray far from Greece. We also welcomed Sakis Tanimanidis, a world

traveller who shared the images and experiences of his journeys, as well as Athina

Economakou, who proves that talent can be channelled in more than one area.

την εξαίρετη εγχάρακτη σύνθεση σε πεντελικό μάρμαρο, στην πρόσοψη του

hilton Αθηνών, όσο και για σημαντικές παρεμβάσεις στο εσωτερικό του. Η Πέ-

γκυ Ζουμπουλάκη, που με την γκαλερί της άλλαξε τον χάρτη της τέχνης στην

πρωτεύουσα, και φίλη του, όπως και πολλών άλλων σπουδαίων καλλιτεχνών,

σημειώνει, μεταξύ άλλων, στη συνέντευξη που παραχώρησε στο περιοδικό: «Η

δουλειά του στο hilton συμβολίζει πολλά πράγματα: Απεικονίζει τη θεά Αθηνά,

ένα βωμό με τις προσφορές ιερειών, τις αυλητρίδες που συμβολίζουν το καλω-

σόρισμα, έναν ίππο κι ένα καράβι. Ο συμβολισμός της φιλοξενίας είναι επίσης

εμφανής. Συμβολισμός που εγώ βρίσκω ότι έχει σχέση με το παλίμψηστο. Αυτό

που οι αρχαίοι έσβηναν, έγραφαν κι έμενε πάντοτε η ουσία».

Φιλοξενία το καλοκαίρι, σε αυτή την πόλη, σημαίνει πολλά και περικλείει μέσα

της όσα ο ξένος ονειρεύεται για την Ελλάδα. Νησιά και θάλασσα, εκλεκτή κου-

ζίνα, αλλά και θησαυρούς, καλά κρυμμένους στην Αθήνα. Τα μουσεία, που φι-

λοξενούν την ιστορία και τη σύγχρονη δημιουργία, φροντίζουν να κρατούν τον

κόσμο λίγο περισσότερο στην αγκαλιά τους, με ιδιαιτέρως προσεγμένα εστι-

ατόρια και καφέ. O πεζόδρομος της Διονυσίου Αρεοπαγίτου, υπό το βλέμμα

της Ακρόπολης, αποτελεί ίσως μία από τις ωραιότερες βόλτες στην Ευρώπη,

ενώ το Καλλιμάρμαρο Στάδιο, το αρχαιότερο εν λειτουργία στάδιο της ιστορίας,

συγκαταλέγεται σε έναν από τους πιο συχνά επισκέψιμους χώρους της πόλης.

Εμείς, με τη σειρά μας, φιλοξενούμε εδώ τους αδελφούς Αντετοκούνμπο,

που ζουν το απόλυτο American dream με μία μπάλα στα χέρια και αναπολούν

πάντα την Ελλάδα που νιώθουν πατρίδα τους, τον Σάκη Τανιμανίδη, που ταξι-

ε άφόρΜη τό τρεΧόν ετός Ολυ-

μπιακών Αγώνων και τα 120 χρόνια από τους πρώτους αγώνες της σύγχρο-

νης εποχής, το Μουσείο Μπενάκη παρουσιάζει μία ξεχωριστή φωτογραφική

έκθεση. «Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες 1896: Οι ιστορικές φωτογραφίες του Άλμπερτ

Μάγιερ από τις Συλλογές του Μουσείου Μπενάκη, με το βλέμμα της Εύας Νά-

θενα», είναι ο τίτλος της έκθεσης, που με πρωτοποριακό τρόπο αναλαμβάνει

να μας ταξιδέψει ψηφιακά στους πρώτους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες, στην Αθή-

να του 1896, ζωντανεύοντας με ήχο και κίνηση τις ιστορικές φωτογραφίες του

επίσημου φωτογράφου των Αγώνων, Άλμπερτ Μάγιερ.

Η εκκίνΗσΗ

Στο σπάνιο αυτό φωτογραφικό υλικό του ομώνυμου λευκώματος, το οποίο φυ-

λάσσεται στα Ιστορικά Αρχεία του Μουσείου Μπενάκη, βασίστηκε η γνωστή

εικαστικός Εύα Νάθενα, που μαζί με τους συνεργάτες της αναβίωσε με μονα-

δικό τρόπο τις ιστορικές αυτές στιγμές. Οι Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες του 1896 απο-

τέλεσαν την πραγματική τομή στην ιστορία των αθλητικών εκδηλώσεων. Η ανα-

βίωση των Αγώνων συνέδεσε το κλασσικό παρελθόν με την ιδέα του σύγχρο-

νου αθλητισμού. Σταδιακά, ο συναγωνισμός μεμονωμένων ατόμων σε διάφορα

αθλήματα εξελίχθηκε σε αγώνες μεταξύ εθνικών ομάδων, οι οποίες εκπροσω-

πούν και αντιπροσωπεύουν λαούς και κοινωνίες. Έφτασαν έτσι οι νέοι Ολυμπι-

ακοί Αγώνες να αποτελέσουν την αφετηρία για τη διοργάνωση διεθνών συνα-

ντήσεων, με τη μορφή, πλέον, του παγκόσμιου αθλητικού γεγονότος. Ύστερα

από πολλούς αιώνες, οι Αγώνες «εγκαινίασαν» τη νέα τους εποχή στην πόλη

της Αθήνας και έτσι, το νέο ελληνικό κράτος είχε να επιδείξει μία ακόμη άμε-

ση σχέση με την αρχαιότητα, πέρα από τα λαμπρά ερείπια αρχαίων ναών και

πόλεων. Το γεγονός της αναβίωσης των γνωστότερων Αγώνων της αρχαιότη-

τας απέκτησε παγκόσμια προβολή και, όπως ήταν φυσικό, γοήτευσε τους αν-

θρώπους του πνεύματος, της οικονομίας, αλλά και τις ίδιες τις βασιλικές οικο-

γένειες της Ευρώπης. Η συμμετοχή τους στις επιτροπές της διοργάνωσης και

anniversary of the revival of first modern Olympics, the benaki Museum pre-

sents an exhibition of rare photographs entitled “Olympic Games 1896: The

historical photographs of Albert Mayer from the Collections of the benaki Mu-

seum, seen through the eyes of artist Eva nathena”. The innovative exhibi-

tion digitally transports us to the first modern Olympic Games in the Athens

of 1896, bringing to life the historical photos of official Games photographer

Albert Mayer with sound and movement.

tHe start

renowned artist Eva nathena and her associates explored the rare photo-

graphs stored in the historical Archives of the benaki Museum and gave them

a unique lease on life. The 1896 Olympic Games were a theretofore entire-

ly revolutionary approach in the history of sporting events. The revival of the

Games linked the classical past with the idea of modern sport. Gradually, the

competitions of individuals in various sporting activities evolved into competi-

tions between national teams, which represented peoples and communities.

And the new Olympic Games provided the basis for the organisation of in-

ternational sporting events. After many centuries, the Games celebrated the

dawn of a new era in the city of Athens, and the new Greek State presented

yet another direct link with antiquity, alongside its many ruins of ancient tem-

ples and cities. The revival of the best-known ancient games earned worldwide

acclaim, and quickly charmed one and all: from the ordinary spectator and the

organising committee to the royal families of Europe. Their participation in the

committees of the organisation, as well as their physical presence in Athens,

enhanced the prestige of the Games on a global level and filled the revival with

the glory of the athletes competing in the international arena.

η φυσική τους παρουσία στην Αθήνα, ενίσχυσε το κύρος των Αγώνων σε πα-

γκόσμιο επίπεδο και «έντυσε» την αναβίωση με την αίγλη όσων πρωταγωνι-

στούσαν στη διεθνή σκηνή.

ΤΑ «κλίκ» ΤΗσ ίσΤΟρίΑσ

Στο πλευρό των υποστηρικτών των Αγώνων βρέθηκε και η νέα τέχνη της επο-

χής: η φωτογραφία. Ξεχωριστός εκπρόσωπος των διάσημων φωτογράφων, ο

πολυταξιδεμένος και σπουδασμένος στις ΗΠΑ, Γερμανός Άλμπερτ Μάγιερ

(Δρέσδη, 1857-1924), ο οποίος ήδη είχε συνδεθεί με τη γερμανική αθλητική

αποστολή που θα ταξίδευε στην Αθήνα για τους Αγώνες και ανέλαβε τη θέση

του επίσημου φωτογράφου της αποστολής.

Το λεύκωμα που παρουσιάζεται στην έκθεση αναγγέλθηκε από τον Τύπο της

εποχής πριν από τη δημιουργία του, αφού η ελληνική εφημερίδα της Τεργέ-

στης, «Ημέρα», αλλά και η αθηναϊκή «Ακρόπολις», το παρουσίασαν ως τη δη-

μιουργία που θα αποτελούσε το ενθύμιο των Αγώνων για τις βασιλικές Αυλές

της εποχής και για τα μέλη της Επιτροπής των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων. Στις είκο-

σι πέντε λιτές φωτογραφίες που περιλαμβάνει, αποτυπώνεται το χρονικό των

Αγώνων, ξεκινώντας από τη Διεθνή Επιτροπή και τον Έλληνα δωρητή και εθνι-

κό ευεργέτη Γεώργιο Αβέρωφ, που ανέλαβε με δική του δαπάνη να αναστη-

λωθεί το αρχαίο Στάδιο της πόλης, χρησιμοποιώντας πάλι πεντελικό μάρμα-

ρο, όπως στην αρχαιότητα.

Οι φωτογραφίες αποτυπώνουν τόσο την τελετουργία όσο και την αθλητική

προσπάθεια. Τη φιλαρμονική ορχήστρα διαδέχονται οι δρομείς, οι δισκοβό-

λοι, οι σφαιροβόλοι, αλλά και οι αθλητές της ενόργανης γυμναστικής, που προ-

βάλλουν την αστική παράδοση των χωρών της δυτικής Ευρώπης, σε ασκήσεις

ακροβατικής τελειότητας. Οι εικόνες με τους κρίκους, τον ίππο και το μονόζυ-

γο, οδηγούν στο ελληνικό έμβλημα των Αγώνων, στον δρομέα Σπύρο Λούη,

tHe “clIcks” of HIstory

Photography, the new art of the era, easily found its place in the Games. Ger-

man Albert Mayer (Dresden, 1857-1924), a well-travelled and American ed-

ucated photographer who was connected with the German team, would

journey to Athens for the Games and undertake the role of official team pho-

tographer.

The album presented in the exhibition was announced by the Press of the

time before its creation, when the Greek newspapers from Trieste (imera) and

Athens (Acropolis) presented it as the souvenir of the Games for the royal

Courts and the members of the Olympic Games Committee. The twenty-five

austere images in the album presented the timeline of the games, from the in-

ternational Committee and Georgios Averof, the Greek donor and national

benefactor who had undertaken the restoration of the ancient Athenian sta-

dium in Pentelic marble at his own expense, restoring it to its former glory.

The photographs depict both the ritual and the athletic effort. The philhar-

monic orchestra preceded the runners, discus and shot put throwers, as well

as the gymnasts, who presented the urban tradition of Western European

countries to acrobatic perfection. The images with the rings, pommel horse

and bar lead to the Greek emblem of the Games, runner Spyros louis, who

posed for Mayer wearing a snow-white fustanella (traditional dress) after win-

ning the Marathon race.

Mayer’s photographic archive was destroyed in 1945 when the city of Dresden

was bombed in World War ii, and the remaining examples of the work of the

German photographer are rare and priceless. The few copies of the leather-

bound album were distributed to the honoured spectators and Games Com-

mittee members, including Georgios Streit, banker and minister of the Greek

Το φωτογραφικό αρχείο του Μάγιερ καταστράφηκε το 1945, όταν οι βομ-

βαρδισμοί του πολέμου ισοπέδωσαν την πόλη της Δρέσδης. Το γεγονός αυ-

τό καθιστά τα λίγα τεκμήρια της δουλειάς του Γερμανού φωτογράφου σπάνια

και ανεκτίμητα. Τα λιγοστά αντίτυπα του δερματόδετου Λευκώματος διανε-

μήθηκαν τιμής ένεκεν και στα μέλη της Επιτροπής των Αγώνων, μεταξύ αυτών

και στον Γεώργιο Στρέιτ, τραπεζίτη και υπουργό των ελληνικών κυβερνήσεων

της εποχής. Ο εγγονός του, Μαρίνος Γερουλάνος, πρόεδρος της Διοικητικής

Επιτροπής του Μουσείου Μπενάκη επί σειρά ετών, δώρισε το αντίτυπο στα

Ιστορικά Αρχεία του Μουσείου. Έκτοτε, το μοναδικό Λεύκωμα φυλάσσεται με

την προσοχή που επιβάλλει η σπανιότητα, προσφέροντας ταυτοχρόνως στην

Ιστορία και την Τέχνη.

Η έκθεση θα παρουσιάζεται στον χώρο «Τέχνη & Περιβάλλον»,

επίπεδο αναχωρήσεων του Διεθνούς Αερολιμένα Αθηνών, έως και

τις 16 Σεπτεμβρίου, και στη Μεσσηνία, στον ειδικά διαμορφωμένο

εκθεσιακό χώρο στην Costa navarino (αίθουσα Symbol), έως και τις

30 Νοεμβρίου 2016.

Government of the time. his grandson, Marinos Geroulanos, President of the

Administrative Committee of the benaki Museum for many years, donated a

copy to the historical Archives of the Museum. Since then, the unique album

has been preserved with the attention its rarity demands, offering a simulta-

neous glimpse into history and Art.

The exhibition will be presented at the “Art & Environment” exhibition

area in the Athens international Airport (Departures level, 2nd floor)

through 16 September, and at the specially designed Symbol hall

exhibition space in Costa navarino through 30 november 2016.

ζωή του εκεί ακριβώς που θέλει. Ένα μόνο κινδυνεύει να σταματήσει την Πέ-

γκυ Ζουμπουλάκη: ο αστάθμητος παράγων, όπως ο θάνατος του συζύγου της

Τάσου, το 1983, σε ηλικία μόλις 50 ετών, ο οποίος από τη δεκαετία του ’60 την

είχε μυήσει στον χώρο της τέχνης. Κι όμως… Με όπλο τη διαίσθηση, η Πέγκυ

Ζουμπουλάκη εγκαινίασε έναν νέο κύκλο ζωής της ομώνυμης γκαλερί, γεμά-

το μικρούς και μεγάλους θριάμβους. «Με έχουν πει φιλοχρήματη», λέει πλέκο-

ντας τα αεικίνητα, μικρά της δάχτυλα. «Σου δίνω τον λόγο μου, είμαι πολύ εντά-

ξει στις συναλλαγές μου και μ’ αρέσει να περνάω τη ζωή μου με πολύ λίγα. Ένα

μικρό σπίτι στην Ύδρα είναι η μεγαλύτερη ευτυχία. Δεν μ’ ενδιαφέρουν τα ρού-

χα. Εντάξει, έχω τα μπιζού μου, αλλά φοράω αυτά που χαίρομαι», αναφέρει δεί-

χνοντας τα μεγάλα «κουλτουριάρικα» δαχτυλίδια της.

Ήταν ίσως αυτή η διαίσθηση που την ώθησε να αναπτύξει ισχυρές φιλίες με

μερικούς από τους σημαντικότερους Έλληνες καλλιτέχνες, με τους οποίους συ-

νεργάστηκε στην γκαλερί της: Τσαρούχη, Γκίκα, Φασιανό, Νικολάου, Ακριθάκη,

Κυριακούλη, Takis, Chryssa, Μαρίνα Καρέλλα και βεβαίως Γιάννη Μόραλη. Με

τον τελευταίο, δε, η σχέση της εξελίχθηκε σε σχέση ζωής. «Δεν υπήρχε μέρα

που να μην έρθει από την γκαλερί».

ΤΟ ΟρΟσΗΜΟ ΠΟυ λεγεΤΑί HIlton ΑθΗνών

Η Πέγκυ Ζουμπουλάκη γνώρισε τον Γιάννη Μόραλη δύο χρόνια αφότου είχε

ολοκληρώσει τη συνεργασία του με το hilton Αθηνών (1959-1962), το 1964.

Για την ίδια, τόσο η εγχάρακτη σύνθεση σε πεντελικό μάρμαρο στην πρόσοψη

του ξενοδοχείου, όσο και οι παρεμβάσεις του στο εσωτερικό του αποτελούν

καλλιτεχνικό ορόσημο για το έργο του. «Κατ' αρχάς, νομίζω ότι τον κέντρισε

πάρα πολύ η ιδέα ότι θα το κάνει. Επίσης, οι αρχιτέκτονες Βασιλειάδης, Βου-

ρέκας και Στάικος, που του πρότειναν τη συνεργασία, ήταν φίλοι του και τους

The woman who "introduced" the people of Athens to De Chirico and Pi-

casso, is someone whose almost imperceptible, girlish manner hides a giant

who knows how to steer her life in the exact direction she desires. There is

only one thing capable of stopping Peggy Zoumboulaki: unforeseen circum-

stances, such as the death of her husband Tasos, who initiated her into the art

scene in the 60s, in 1983 at the age of 50. And yet… Armed with intuition,

Peggy Zoumboulaki embarked on a new phase of her life on her own, and

founded a gallery, full of small and great triumphs. “i’ve been called avaricious,”

she says, clasping her restless little hands. “i give you my word, my business

transactions are all above board and i don’t need much money to live my life.

My small house on the island of hydra is my greatest happiness. i’m not inter-

ested in clothes. yes, i have my jewellery, but i wear the pieces that give me

pleasure,” she adds, pointing to her large, “cultured” rings.

it was her intuition that led her to develop strong friendships with some of

the most important Greek artists with whom she collaborated in her gallery:

Tsarouhis, Gikas, fasianos, nikolaou, Akrithakis, Kyriakoulis, Takis, Chryssa, Ma-

rina Karella and, naturally, yiannis Moralis. her relationship with the latter devel-

oped into a life-long rapport. “no day went by without him visiting the gallery.”

a landMark called tHe HIlton atHens

Peggy Zoumboulaki met yiannis Moralis in 1964, two years after his collaboration

with the hilton Athens (1959-1962). She believes that the engraved Pentelic

marble composition on the façade of the hotel, as well as his interventions on

the interior, are artistic milestones in his body of work. “firstly, i think he was very

much intrigued by the idea. Moreover, the architects Vassiliadis, Vourekas and

Staikos, with whom he would collaborate, were his friends and he held them

in high esteem. i believe his abstract style created a harmonious connection

between the Athenian building and the light of Attica. After the hilton Athens,

he began to incorporate abstract elements into his painting,” she continues,

εκτιμούσε. Πιστεύω ότι η αφαιρετική γραφή του εντάχθηκε αρμονικά στο ίδιο

το αθηναϊκό οικοδόμημα και στο αττικό φως. Μετά το hilton Αθηνών, η αφαι-

ρετική του δουλειά μπαίνει και στη ζωγραφική του», λέει διαβάζοντας τις σημει-

ώσεις που έχει ετοιμάσει.

«Η δουλειά του στο hilton Αθηνών συμβολίζει πολλά πράγματα: απεικονίζει

τη θεά Αθηνά, ένα βωμό με τις προσφορές ιερειών, τις αυλητρίδες που συμβο-

λίζουν το καλωσόρισμα, έναν ίππο κι ένα καράβι. Ο συμβολισμός της φιλοξε-

νίας είναι επίσης εμφανής. Συμβολισμός που εγώ βρίσκω ότι έχει σχέση με το

παλίμψηστο. Αυτό που οι αρχαίοι έσβηναν, έγραφαν κι έμενε πάντοτε η ουσία».

Για την Πέγκυ Ζουμπουλάκη, το hilton Αθηνών ήταν ένα πρωτοποριακό έργο

για την εποχή του και μάλιστα ιδιαίτερα δύσκολο. «Για μένα, το έργο του hilton

Αθηνών αποπνέει μία μουσική. Θα μπορούσαν να είχαν γραφτεί και νότες πάνω

στο μάρμαρο. Το έργο έχει και μία αύρα μοντερνισμού. Σαν να ξανάνιωσε τον

Μόραλη». Στην ίδια, έκανε εντύπωση επίσης το ότι τα σχόλια υπήρξαν ενθουσι-

ώδη: «Δεν θυμάμαι καμμία κακή κριτική για τον Μόραλη και το hilton Αθηνών».

Παίρνει μία ανάσα και συνεχίζει –αυτή τη φορά χωρίς να κοιτά τις σημειώ-

σεις της: «Πόσο αληθινά δούλεψε έναν τόσο μεγάλο όγκο!». Πώς τον δούλε-

ψε, αλήθεια;

«Α, το δούλεψε πάνω σε μακέτες, νομίζω πάνω σε γύψο. Δεν το χάραξε αυ-

τός, αλλά ήταν κάθε μέρα εκεί και έλεγχε τα πάντα. Συνεργάστηκε θαυμάσια με

την κεραμίστρια Ελένη Βερναρδάκη, με την οποία έκανε τις εσωτερικές παρεμ-

βάσεις του hilton Αθηνών».

ΟΤΑν Η Πεγκυ (ΠρώΤΟ)γνώρίσε ΤΟν γίΑννΗ

Η πρώτη συνάντηση της Ζουμπουλάκη με τον Μόραλη έγινε σε μία ταβέρνα

στην Αγία Ζώνη, στην Αθήνα, ύστερα από πρόσκληση του καλλιτέχνη Νίκου

Νικολάου, που είχε στενές σχέσεις και με τους δύο. «Είχα φοβερό τρακ. Ήταν

πολύ σημαντικός καλλιτέχνης, ωραίος άντρας, très chic, είχε τη φήμη του Δον

Ζουάν. Εγώ τότε επρόκειτο να παντρευτώ τον Τάσο, ζούσαμε μαζί, ήμασταν

“his work at the hilton Athens symbolises many things: it depicts the god-

dess Athena, an altar with offerings, flautists symbolising welcome, a horse

and a boat. The symbolism of hospitality is also evident. Symbolism i find re-

lated to the palimpsest, a manuscript or piece of writing material on which an-

cient Greeks later superimposed or effaced earlier writing that nonetheless

retained its essence.”

According to Peggy Zoumboulaki, the hilton Athens was a pioneering work

for its time, and a particularly challenging one. “for me, the hilton Athens pro-

ject exudes a music all its own. They could also have etched musical notes on

the marble. The project also has a modernist aura. it seemed to rejuvenate

Moralis.” She was also impressed by the enthusiastic reviews. “i can’t recall any

criticism about Moralis and the hilton Athens.”

She takes a deep breath and continues –this time without looking at her

notes. “how did he manage to work on such a massive scale?” Good question.

“i think he worked with plaster models. he didn’t etch it himself but was

on site each day and supervised every detail. As regards his interventions on

the interior of the hilton Athens, he collaborated brilliantly with ceramic art-

ist Eleni Vernardaki.”

WHen peGGy (fIrst) Met yIannIs

Zoumboulaki and Moralis first met at a tavern in Agia Zoni, in Athens, at the

invitation of nikos nikolaou, who knew them both well. “i was very nervous.

he was a very important artist, a handsome man, très chic and had the rep-

utation of a Don Juan. i was going to marry Tasos, we were living together

–and although it may now sound old fashioned– we were engaged. Μoralis

had amazing hands. And suddenly… the ice broke. he was so charming, di-

rect, and told jokes that immediately bridged the age difference between us.”

sUnsets on aeGIna

Peggy Zoumboulaki has fond memories of Aegina, Moralis’ studio and the large

group of friends and fellow artists at the home of nikos nikolaou. “Moralis

owned land on Aegina because nikolaou had a house there –and the sunsets

were glorious. nikolaou bought the land for Moralis and the house was de-

signed by architect Aris Konstandinidis, who was a wonderful man as well as

an important architect. he designed a house where Moralis could live with…

and without his last wife, yianna Vassalou, with whom he did not have much

in common. it was, in essence, two houses.”

nikolaou and Moralis studied together at the Polytechnic university of Ath-

ens and mosaics in rome, with a scholarship from the Athens Academy. They

had a friendly agreement to study abroad together, no matter who won the

scholarship. “They were friends to the end, but very different,” recalls Peggy

Zoumboulaki. “They would often argue. Moralis was practical and detail-ori-

ented, nikolaou was spontaneous and enthusiastic. They shared their daily

routine on Aegina until the end. i saw everyone there: Odysseus Elytis, Manos

hadjidakis and the entire generation of the 30s. Moralis didn’t want visitors.

he would meet his friends at Aiakeio patisserie.”

tHe “Money” factor

Peggy Zoumboulaki believes that the commercialisation of art began in the

60s. Art became a symbol of prestige, prices rose and people believed that

the galleries were responsible for pushing them up. “The artists, however,

were partially responsible –and we often found ourselves with significantly

inflated prices, and the artists of today must face the consequences of these

actions. There were some artists, regardless if they have made made mon-

ey for the gallery or not, whom i appreciate and thank, because they chose

to share their work with me. i’m not speaking of the generation of the 30s

–that was the golden era of the gallery– but of Psychopaidis, Takis, Chryssa,

Pavlos, bokoros, Karella and many others. And there is a younger generation

as well: Xagoraris, bitsikas, Ganas, Papakostas, Stefanidakis, Poulantzas, Ad-

amakis and Golemas, under the supervision of my daughter Daphne, who

undertook direction of the gallery in 2000. i believe these youngsters can

enjoy a career outside Greece, which is very difficult for present day artists.”

–θα πω τώρα κάτι ντεμοντέ– αρραβωνιασμένοι. Αυτό που με μαγνήτισε αμέ-

σως ήταν τα χέρια του. Είχε υπέροχα χέρια ο Μόραλης. Και ξαφνικά… ο πάγος

έσπασε μέσα σε δευτερόλεπτα. Ήταν τόσο γοητευτικός, άμεσος, έλεγε ανέκ-

δοτα κι αμέσως χανόταν η διαφορά της ηλικίας».

ΗλίΟβΑσίλεΜΑΤΑ σΤΗν ΑίγίνΑ

Έντονες είναι οι αναμνήσεις της Πέγκυς Ζουμπουλάκη από την Αίγινα, το ατελιέ

του Μόραλη, αλλά και τη μεγάλη παρέα των φίλων κι ομοτέχνων του στο σπίτι

του Νίκου Νικολάου. «Ο Μόραλης πήρε ένα οικόπεδο στην Αίγινα επειδή εί-

χε σπίτι εκεί ο Νικολάου –και τα ηλιοβασιλέματα ήταν υπέροχα. Το οικόπεδο

του το αγόρασε ο Νικολάου και το σπίτι το έφτιαξε ο Άρης Κωνσταντινίδης, ο

οποίος ήταν ένας θαυμάσιος άνθρωπος, εκτός από σημαντικός αρχιτέκτονας.

Έκανε ένα σπίτι για να μπορεί ο Μόραλης να ζει και μαζί και… χώρια με την τε-

λευταία του γυναίκα, Γιάννα Βασσάλου, με την οποία ήταν δύο τόσο διαφορετι-

κοί άνθρωποι. Ήταν στην ουσία δύο σπίτια».

Ο Νικολάου κι ο Μόραλης σπούδασαν μαζί στο Πολυτεχνείο, καθώς επί-

σης και στη Ρώμη, Ψηφοθετική, μέσω υποτροφίας που είχε κερδίσει ο Μόραλης

στον διαγωνισμό της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών. Αυτή ήταν η φιλική τους συμφωνία: να

φύγουν μαζί για σπουδές στο εξωτερικό, όποιος κι αν κέρδιζε την υποτροφία.

«Ήταν φίλοι μέχρι τέλους, αλλά τόσο διαφορετικοί», θυμάται η Πέγκυ Ζουμπου-

λάκη. «Και τσακώνονταν πολύ. Ο Μόραλης ήταν συγκεκριμένος και κοντά στη

λεπτομέρεια, ο Νικολάου ήταν αυθόρμητος και ενθουσιώδης. Και μέχρι τέλους,

η καθημερινότητά τους στην Αίγινα ήταν κοινή. Και ποιους δεν είχα δει εκεί: τον

Οδυσσέα Ελύτη, τον Μάνο Χατζιδάκι, κι όλη τη γενιά του ’30. Ο Μόραλης δεν

ήθελε επισκέψεις. Τους φίλους του τους έβλεπε στο ζαχαροπλαστείο Αιάκειο».

Ο ΠΑρΑγών «χρΗΜΑ»

Για την Πέγκυ Ζουμπουλάκη, η εμπορευματοποίηση της τέχνης άρχισε από τη

γενιά του ’60 κι ύστερα. Η τέχνη έγινε prestige symbol, οι τιμές αυξήθηκαν κι όλοι

νόμισαν ότι οι γκαλερί ήταν εκείνες που τις ανέβαζαν. «Oι καλλιτέχνες, όμως,

είχαν μερίδιο ευθύνης –και βρεθήκαμε πολλές φορές με πλασματικά μεγάλες

τιμές και τώρα πολλοί καλλιτέχνες το πληρώνουν. Υπήρχαν καλλιτέχνες που –

ανεξαρτήτως του αν άφησαν χρήματα στην γκαλερί ή όχι– εγώ τους εκτιμώ και

τους ευχαριστώ, διότι έδειξαν τη δουλειά τους σε μένα. Δεν μιλάω για τη γενιά

του ’30 –αυτός ήταν ο χρυσός αιώνας της γκαλερί–, αλλά για τους Ψυχοπαίδη,

Takis, Chryssa, Pavlos, Μποκόρο, Καρέλλα και πάρα πολλούς άλλους. Υπάρουν

και οι πιο νέοι: Ξαγοράρης, Μπίτσικας, Γκανάς, Παπακώστα, Στεφανιδάκη, Που-

λαντζά, Αδαμάκη, Γκολέμα, που είναι στην εποπτεία της κόρης μου Δάφνης, η

οποία από το 2000 έχει αναλάβει τη διεύθυνση της γκαλερί. Νομίζω ότι αυτά τα

παιδιά θα μπορέσουν να κάνουν καριέρα εκτός Ελλάδας, κάτι που έχουν κάνει

λίγοι καλλιτέχνες σήμερα».

ερΜης τόΥ άλεΚόΥ φάςιάνόΥ απαρ-

νείται τα εμβληματικά αρχαία φτερωτά πέδιλα και ποδηλατεί στο κέντρο της Αθή-

νας, υπό τους ήχους της λειτουργίας που γεμίζουν τον δρόμο από τα μεγάφω-

να της Παναγίας της Χρυσοσπηλιώτισσας.

Ο καλλιτέχνης εμπνέεται συχνά από την κλασσική μυθολογία: «Ο μύθος σε

οδηγεί προς την ελευθερία, σε βγάζει από την καταπίεση, τη φυλακή σου, σε

εμπνέει να γίνεις δυνατός και να φθάσεις στον σκοπό σου». Όμως, η απόδο-

ση του αρχαίου Έλληνα θεού κάθε άλλο παρά κλασσική είναι. Τόσο η κορμο-

στασιά του Ερμή, όσο και το εμβληματικό κηρύκειο με τα τυλιγμένα δύο φίδια,

των οποίων τα κεφάλια τους συναντιούνταν αντικριστά, αποδίδονται με την ξε-

χωριστή οπτική που χαρακτηρίζει τα έργα του ζωγράφου, χαράκτη και σκηνο-

γράφου Αλέκου Φασιανού.

Όπως και στην Αρχαία Ελλάδα, όπου ο θεός προστάτης των δρόμων πα-

ρουσιαζόταν στις διασταυρώσεις μεγάλων οδών, επάνω σε ξύλινες ή πέτρινες

στήλες, τις γνωστές και ως Ερμές, έτσι κι εδώ, το απείκασμα του θεού το συνα-

ντάμε στο πολύβουο και πολυεθνικό σταυροδρόμι της Αιόλου, ως οδοδείκτη,

επάνω σε ένα μεταλλικό στύλο ψηλότερο από 2 μέτρα.

Σε αντίθεση με τα γλυπτά των πρωτευουσών που επιβάλλονται με το μέγεθός

τους, ο μικρού μεγέθους Ερμής χάνεται στον οπτικό θόρυβο της διασταύρω-

σης, αποτελώντας μία εικαστική έκπληξη-δώρο μόνο για τους περαστικούς που

«τολμούν» να σηκώσουν τα μάτια τους πάνω από το ύψος τους...

ALEKOS FASSIANOS’ HErMES rEFUTES THE EMBLEMATIC winged san-

dals and cycles to the centre of Athens, to the sound of the service that fills the

street from the loudspeakers of Panagia Chrysospiliotissa church.

The artist is often inspired by classical mythology: “The myth leads you to free-

dom, unshackles you from oppression, your prison, and inspires you to be strong

and attain your goal.” however, his representation of the ancient Greek god

cannot be termed classical. both the statue of hermes and the characteristic

caduceus with two intertwined snakes whose heads face one another, are pre-

sented with a unique perspective that distinguishes the works of painter, en-

graver and stage designer Alekos fassianos.

As in Ancient Greece, where the patron god of the road was presented at

major crossroads on wooden or stone columns, which were known as hermes,

this presentation of the god stands on a metal column (over 2 metres in height)

at the vibrant and multicultural intersection of Aiolou and Vyssis streets.

unlike the sculptures in other capitals that are imposing in size alone, the

compact hermes is lost in the optical noise of the intersection, a visual surprise

gift for passers-by who “dare” to raise their eyes to the sky.

αγώνας, προσπάθεια, πάθος, βήματα προς την επιτυχία, άλλοτε μικρά και άλ-

λοτε μεγαλύτερα, μέχρι την απόλυτη καταξίωση στη χώρα όπου όλα μπορούν

να συμβούν, την Αμερική». Αυτό θα μπορούσε να είναι το τρέιλερ για μία ταινία-

blockbuster με θέμα τη ζωή των δύο αδελφών. Τα τέσσερα από τα πέντε παιδιά

της οικογένειας Αντετοκούνμπο, με ρίζες από τη Νιγηρία, γεννήθηκαν στην Ελ-

λάδα και έζησαν εδώ με αρκετές δυσκολίες. Ωστόσο, δεν το έβαλαν ποτέ κάτω

και τα δύο μεγαλύτερα αδέλφια, ο Θανάσης και ο Γιάννης, καταβάλλοντας με-

γάλη προσπάθεια κατέκτησαν την επιτυχία στο άθλημα που, απ’ ότι φαίνεται, εί-

ναι πλασμένοι για να κάνουν. Από την Α2 κατηγορία του ελληνικού μπάσκετ και

τον Φιλαθλητικό, ο Γιάννης Αντετοκούνμπο, εδώ και τρία χρόνια, αποτελεί το πιο

υποσχόμενο ταλέντο των Μιλγουόκι Μπακς, γράφοντας, μόνον εφέτος, μέσους

όρους που άγγιξαν σχεδόν το triple-double και σπάζοντας το ένα ατομικό ρε-

κόρ του μετά το άλλο, επιβεβαιώνοντας έτσι ότι είναι ζήτημα χρόνου να γίνει κι

εκείνος all-star. Ο Θανάσης βελτιώνεται συνεχώς, προσπαθώντας να καθιερώσει

το τεράστιο ταλέντο του στους Knicks της Νέας Υόρκης, αλλά και να αποκτήσει

υψηλού επιπέδου εμπειρίες, για να είναι έτοιμος σε περίπτωση που αποδεχθεί

μία από τις πολλές προτάσεις που έρχονται από την Ευρώπη. Τα δύο αδέλφια,

πάντως, παραμένουν χαμηλών τόνων, επιστρέφουν στην Ελλάδα κάθε φορά που

πάρτι –τα Antetokounbros Streetball Events– και με υπερηφάνεια θα φορέσουν

τη γαλανόλευκη φανέλα της Εθνικής στον δρόμο προς τους Ολυμπιακούς του Ρίο.

Πώς ξεκίνησαν τα antetokounbros streetball events;

θανάσης Αντετοκούνμπο: Είναι κάτι που ξεκίνησε αυθόρμητα. Ένα πρωί γρά-

ψαμε ένα tweet ότι θα παίξουμε στη γειτονιά μας. Δεν θέλαμε να το κάνουμε

μεγάλο θέμα και, φυσικά, δεν περιμέναμε να μαζευτεί 3.000 κόσμος! Έτσι, το

κάνουμε πια κάθε χρόνο, πιο οργανωμένα, σε διαφορετικά μέρη, για να ευχα-

ριστήσουμε περισσότερους φίλους μας.

γιάννης Αντετοκούνμπο: Φέτος το event «ταξίδεψε» στο Ηράκλειο, στη Θεσ-

σαλονίκη και στην Αθήνα. Μακάρι του χρόνου να γίνει σε περισσότερες πόλεις

της Ελλάδας, για να απολαύσουμε και εμείς την ομορφιά της χώρας μας, αλλά

και για να δώσουμε χαρά στον κόσμο και να μεταδώσουμε έστω και λίγο από

τον ενθουσιασμό μας για το άθλημα που τόσο αγαπάμε.

Πώς είναι η καθημερινότητα σε Μιλγουόκι και νέα υόρκη;

θ.Α.: Προπόνηση, προπόνηση και προπόνηση… (γέλια) Τον ελεύθερο χρό-

νο τον περνάμε με την οικογένειά μας. Δεν μπορείς να κάνεις και πολλά, όταν

possible: America.” it could be the trailer for a blockbuster film based on the

lives of the two brothers. four of the five children of the Antetokounmpo fam-

ily from nigeria were born and raised in Greece, and underwent considerable

hardships. nonetheless, they never gave up and the two eldest brothers, Tha-

nasis and Giannis, focused their efforts on succeeding in the world of sports,

seemingly fulfilling their destiny. from category A2 of Greek basketball and the

filalthlitiko, Giannis Antetokounmpo has proved the most promising talent on

the Milwaukee bucks, whose five triple-doubles this year alone made bucks

history, confirming that it is simply a matter of time before he, too, becomes

and all-star. Thanasis continues to improve, is making great strides establishing

his considerable talent on the new york Knicks, and is getting the most from

these exceptional experiences so as to be ready to potentially accept one of

the many offers from Europe. The two brothers, however, maintain a low pro-

file, return to Greece every time they feel nostalgic for their homeland, organ-

ising basketball parties known as “Antetokounbros Streetball Events” and are

proud to wear the blue and white jersey of the national Team as they repre-

sent Greece at the summer Olympics in rio de Janeiro.

How did the antetokounbros streetball events start?

thanasis antetokounmpo: it began quite spontaneously. One morning we

tweeted that we would be playing basketball in our neighbourhood. We didn’t

want to make a big deal about it and definitely did not expect 3,000 people

to turn up! The event is now annual, is more organised and is held at different

venues so we can thank our many friends.

Giannis antetokounmpo: This year the event “went on the road” to herak-

lion, Thessaloniki and Athens. i hope that next year we’ll be able to visit more

cities in Greece, so we can enjoy the beauty of our country while giving pleas-

ure to the people, in an attempt to communicate even a fraction of our en-

thusiasm for the sport we love.

What are your daily routines like in Milwaukee and new york?

t.a.: Practice, practice and more practice… (laughs). We spend our free time

with our family. you can’t do too much when living the life of an athlete.

G.a.: i don’t really go out that often and living in Milwaukee, which is a quiet

city, helps me to remain focused on basketball and my family –the two most

important things in my life.

the national team is developing as we’d all hoped…

G.a.: yes, we’re both on the national team for the rio Olympic Games and it’s

our great pleasure and honour.

you wrap yourselves in the Greek flag every time you win. Greeks all over

the world are proud of your achievements and follow you everywhere. What

does Greece mean to you?

Greece is our homeland, the country where we were born. We play games

all season and think about when we will return to Greece, hear Greek and see

the Greek people. Although our parents are from nigeria, we don’t have any

ties with that country.

you could have changed your names to english ones (John and nathan, for

example), but you kept your Greek baptismal names. Why?

t.a.: i tell my teammates that Thanasis is my name and that’s what i want to be

called. i like my name and would never change it.

G.a.: Why would we change our names? We’re Greeks! Do Americans play-

ing in Greece change their names? being asked our names inevitably leads to

an interesting conversation about our roots –and we like that.

the two of you are more than brothers. you’re like a single unit. are you

ever competitive?

t.a.: i wouldn’t say competitive. We motivate each other so we can both

achieve our maximum potential.

G.a.: it’s because we train together and with our younger brother Kostas that

we aren’t selfish –we simply help one another.

you’re very close as a family. How important is family to you?

t.a.: it’s everything. Many people forget where they come from, but that’s what

counts at the end of the day. it isn’t about material goods or glory or anything

else. After all, the institution of family plays a very important role in Greek culture.

G.a.: if it weren’t for family, we wouldn’t be where we are right now. Many

Greek families have close ties, but ours is a special case, because we’ve survived

many difficult times together…

apart from the family, has anyone else given you a helping hand?

t.a.: Of course! i even remember a man in a café who gave me a glass of water

when i was thirsty… And to show our gratitude, we also want to do the same,

to give back to the people, to society. i wish we were in a position to help even

more people, either with basketball or financially.

let’s go back to your school days. Were you good students?

G.a.: We weren’t bad ones, but we were consumed by sport. We graduated

from the Sports Secondary School in Egaleo.

t.a.: One of our teachers told me i would be an excellent student, if i didn’t

like basketball so much. And when i replied that i wanted to play on the nbA,

he said, “Do you know how many athletes all over the world want to play in

the nbA, and how few actually succeed? Very few!”

…and you were among the chosen few. Was basketball always your sport?

G.a.: When i was young i wanted to be a footballer, because of my father and

older brother. Our father was sad in the beginning –but now he’s happy and

proud of us.

thanasis, you’ve become very close to your teammate, carmello anthony.

What’s he like?

t.a.: he’s a man who has helped me a great deal in the last two years. We became

close when i told him i wanted to learn from him and he was willing to teach me.

γ.Α.: Ετσι κι αλλιώς, δεν βγαίνω πολύ και το να βρίσκομαι στο Μιλγουόκι, που εί-

ναι μία ήσυχη πόλη, με βοηθάει να παραμένω συγκεντρωμένος στο μπάσκετ και

στην οικογένειά μου –τα δύο πιο σημαντικά πράγματα για μένα στη ζωή.

Με την εθνική τα πράγματα εξελίχθηκαν όπως τα θέλαμε όλοι…

γ.Α.: Ναι, είμαστε και οι δύο στην Εθνική ομάδα για τους Ολυμπιακούς αγώνες

του Ρίο και αυτό είναι μεγάλη μας χαρά και τιμή.

Τυλίγεστε με την ελληνική σημαία σε κάθε σας νικητήριο παιχνίδι. Οι Έλ-

ληνες, απανταχού, είναι υπερήφανοι και σας ακολουθούν παντού. Τι είναι η

ελλάδα για σας;

Η Ελλάδα είναι η πατρίδα μας, η χώρα που γεννηθήκαμε. Παίζουμε αγώνες μέσα

στη σεζόν και το μυαλό μας είναι στο πότε θα έρθουμε στην Ελλάδα, να ακού-

σουμε ελληνικά, να δούμε Έλληνες. Παρότι οι γονείς μας είναι από τη Νιγηρία,

εμείς δεν έχουμε καμμία σχέση με αυτή τη χώρα.

θα μπορούσατε να έχετε αλλάξει τα ονόματά σας σε αγγλικά (John και nathan,

για παράδειγμα), όμως εσείς κρατήσατε τα βαφτιστικά, ελληνικά ονόματα. γιατί;

θ.Α.: Έχω πει στους συμπαίκτες μου ότι αυτό είναι το όνομά μου, έτσι θέλω να

με φωνάζουν. Μ’ αρέσει που με λένε Θανάση και δεν θα το άλλαζα ποτέ.

γ.Α.: Γιατί να τα αλλάξουμε; Αφού είμαστε Έλληνες! Δηλαδή, οι Αμερικανοί που

παίζουν στην Ελλάδα, αλλάζουν τα ονόματά τους; Έχει ενδιαφέρον, πάντως, το

γεγονός ότι κάθε φορά που μας ρωτάνε πώς μας λένε, ξεκινάει μία συζήτηση

για τον τόπο καταγωγής μας και αυτό μας αρέσει.

εσείς οι δύο είστε πια κάτι περισσότερο από αδέλφια. είστε σαν ένα. Δεν

είστε ποτέ ανταγωνιστικοί;

θ.Α.: Δεν θα έλεγα ανταγωνιστικοί. Λειτουργούμε σαν κίνητρο ο ένας για τον

άλλον, ώστε να φτάσουμε το μάξιμουμ των δυνατοτήτων μας.

γ.Α.: Επειδή κάνουμε προπόνηση και μαζί με τον μικρότερο αδελφό μας, τον Κώ-

στα, δεν σκεφτόμαστε εγωιστικά, απλώς βοηθάμε ο ένας τον άλλον.

είστε πολύ δεμένοι σαν οικογένεια. Τι είναι για σας η οικογένεια;

θ.Α.: Είναι το παν. Πολλοί ξεχνούν από πού προέρχονται, αλλά στο τέλος της

ημέρας, αυτό είναι που μετράει. Ούτε τα υλικά αγαθά, ούτε η δόξα, ούτε τίπο-

τα. Άλλωστε, η ελληνική κουλτούρα έχει πολύ ψηλά τον θεσμό της οικογένειας.

γ.Α.: Αν δεν υπήρχε η οικογένεια, δεν θα βρισκόμασταν εδώ αυτή τη στιγμή. Πολ-

λές ελληνικές οικογένειες έχουν αυτό το δέσιμο, όμως εμείς είμαστε ιδιαίτερη

περίπτωση, γιατί έχουμε περάσει μαζί πολλά και δύσκολα…

εκτός από την οικογένεια, σας βοήθησαν και άλλοι άνθρωποι;

θ.Α.: Εννοείται! Θυμάμαι μέχρι και εκείνον τον άνθρωπο, σε ένα καφενείο, που

μου έδωσε ένα ποτήρι νερό όταν δίψασα... Και για να δείξουμε την ευγνωμοσύ-

νη μας, θέλουμε κι εμείς να κάνουμε το ίδιο, να προσφέρουμε κάτι στον κόσμο,

στην κοινωνία. Μακάρι να είμαστε σε θέση να βοηθήσουμε περισσότερο κό-

σμο, είτε μπασκετικά, είτε οικονομικά.

Πάμε στα σχολικά σας χρόνια. Ήσασταν καλοί μαθητές;

γ.Α.: Δεν ήμασταν και κακοί, αλλά μας απορρόφησε ο αθλητισμός. Αποφοιτή-

σαμε από το Αθλητικό Λύκειο Αιγάλεω.

θ.Α.: Ένας καθηγητής μας μού έλεγε πως θα ήμουν άριστος μαθητής, αν δεν

μου άρεσε τόσο πολύ το μπάσκετ. Και όταν κάποτε του είπα πως ήθελα να παί-

ξω στο ΝΒΑ, μου απάντησε: «Ξέρεις πόσοι αθλητές σε όλο τον κόσμο θέλουν

να παίξουν στο ΝΒΑ και πόσο μικρό ποσοστό το πετυχαίνει τελικά; Μηδενικό!».

…και εσείς ήσασταν μέσα σ’ αυτό το ελάχιστο ποσοστό. είχατε πάντα στο

μυαλό σας το μπάσκετ;

γ.Α.: Εγώ μικρός έλεγα ότι θέλω να γίνω ποδοσφαιριστής, λόγω του μπαμπά και

του μεγάλου αδελφού. Στην αρχή, ο πατέρας μας στενοχωρήθηκε, τώρα πια

όμως νιώθει ευτυχισμένος και υπερήφανος για μας.

θανάση, έχετε έρθει πολύ κοντά με τον συμπαίκτη σου carmello anthony.

Τι άνθρωπος είναι;

θ.Α.: Είναι ένας άνθρωπος που με βοήθησε πολύ τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια. Ήρ-

θαμε κοντά, όταν του είπα ότι ήθελα να μάθω από αυτόν και εκείνος ήταν πρό-

θυμος να μου δείξει.

γιάννη, έπαιξες ένα από τα καλύτερα παιχνίδια σου μπροστά στον αγαπημέ-

νο σου παίκτη, τον κobe Bryant. Τι σου είπε όταν συναντηθήκατε;

γ.Α: Ότι πρέπει να δουλέψω πολύ, ότι μπορώ να γίνω σπουδαίος και ότι αυτό

είναι στο χέρι μου. Μου είπε επίσης να εκμεταλλευθώ την καλοκαιρινή περίοδο

για να βελτιωθώ, διότι τότε οι περισσότεροι ξεκουράζονται και έτσι μπορώ να

κερδίσω έδαφος και να είμαι «μπροστά» όταν ξεκινήσει η σεζόν.

Αλήθεια, τι θα κάνετε το καλοκαίρι;

γ.Α: Θα κάνουμε ό,τι πρέπει για να γίνουμε καλύτεροι: θα αποκοπούμε λίγο από

τον κόσμο και θα επικεντρωθούμε στη δουλειά μας. Όλοι μας θα κάνουμε προ-

πονήσεις σε Ελλάδα, Μιλγουόκι και Λος Άντζελες. Όταν ο μικρότερος αδερφός

μας, ο Άλεξ, τελειώσει με τις υποχρεώσεις του στο σχολείο, θα έρθει και εκεί-

νος μαζί μας. Όσο είμαστε στην Ελλάδα, συνεχίζω προπονήσεις με προπονητή

από το Μιλγουόκι. Όλα είναι προπόνηση. Χωρίς αυτήν, δεν θα δίναμε συνεντεύ-

ξεις, δεν θα κάναμε φωτογραφίσεις, δεν θα γινόταν το event Antetokoubros.

Πώς βλέπετε τον εαυτό σας σε 10 χρόνια;

γ.Α: Καλύτερους. Ευχόμαστε να είμαστε υγιείς και να παίξουμε και τα τέσσερα

αδέλφια στην Εθνική και στο ΝΒΑ, αν γίνεται και παράλληλα!

Giannis, you played one of your best games with your favourite player, kobe

Bryant in the stands. What did he say to you when you met?

G.a.: That i should work hard, that i could become a great player and that it

was up to me. he also told me that i should take advantage of the summer to

improve, because other players tend to rest during the off season, and i would

be “ahead of the game” when the season started.

and what do you do in summer?

G.a.: We do whatever it takes to improve: we cut ourselves off from the world

and focus on our work. We will all train in Greece, Milwaukee and los Ange-

les. When our youngest brother Alex finishes school, he’ll join us. it’s all about

practicing. Without it, we wouldn’t give interviews or take part in photo shoots

–and there would be no Antetokoubros events.

How do you see yourselves in ten years time?

G.a.: Even better than we are now. We hope to be healthy and that all four

Antetokounmpo brothers will be playing on the national Team and for the

nbA, and simultaneously if possible!

ει ότι είναι ένας άνθρωπος που έχει φτάσει πιο ψηλά από οποιονδήποτε άλλο

σύγχρονό του στο επάγγελμά του, παραμένει πάντα ταπεινός. Για αυτό, όταν

εκφράσαμε τον σεβασμό μας για τον χρόνο που μας αφιέρωσε στη συνέντευ-

ξή μας, επέμεινε πως νιώθει ότι η τιμή ήταν δική του. Το ντύσιμό του έδειχνε

έναν άνθρωπο που ξέρει τις τάσεις της μόδας, αλλά τις χρησιμοποιεί μέχρι εκεί

που δεν προδίδεται η πραγματική εικόνα του εαυτού και της ηλικίας του. «Ανοι-

χτός» στην εποχή που βρίσκεται, αφουγκράζεται τις τάσεις, παρότι συζητήσα-

με αρκετά και για το παρελθόν.

Τι σας έκανε να αφήσετε την πόλη Haverfordwest της Ουαλίας και να πά-

τε στο λονδίνο; Ήθελα να γίνω οδηγός σε αγώνες ταχύτητας. Ζούσα στο

Κent, που είναι πολύ κοντά στο Λονδίνο, και οι γονείς μου μεταφέρθηκαν στο

haverfordwest της Ουαλίας, απ’ όπου ήταν η μητέρα μου. Έτσι, ξεκίνησα να

βρω μία δουλειά που θα μου εξασφάλιζε αρκετά χρήματα για να κάνω καρτ και

μοτοκρός. Η εταιρεία για την οποία εργαζόμουν, παρότι ζούσα στην Ουαλία,

είχε ως έδρα το leeds κι εκεί άρχισα να κοινωνικοποιούμαι. Παράλληλα, πολλοί

άνθρωποι που έκαναν τις διακοπές τους στον τόπο καταγωγής μου, την Ουα-

λία, μου έλεγαν να πάω στο birmingham. Εκεί γνώρισα τους Duran Duran σε ένα

club που λεγόταν “rummer”, που ήταν όπως το “blitz” στο Λονδίνο...

θα μπορούσατε να μας μιλήσετε για τους νεορομαντικούς και το “Blitz”;

Ήταν ενδιαφέρουσα εποχή. Οι νεορομαντικοί κοιτούσαν στο παρελθόν, αλλά

το έκαναν με διαφορετικό τρόπο. Ήταν νοσταλγικοί και συνδύαζαν τα σακάκια

με το makeup και την ηλεκτρονική μουσική. Επρόκειτο για μία εκ νέου ερμηνεία

των 20s του Cecil beaton. Επειδή εγώ ήμουν αρκετά ντροπαλός, το makeup με

το συγκεκριμένο ντύσιμο μου επέτρεπε να είμαι κάποιος άλλος. Δεν υπήρχαν

brands όπως τα Armani ή Versace και έπρεπε να πάει κάποιος σε ανεξάρτητες

boutique για να δημιουργήσει την εικόνα του.

ALTHOUGH TIMOTHY EVErEST IS A MAN who has reached greater heights

than any other of his contemporary professional peers, he remains humble.

hence, when we expressed our gratitude for the time he devoted to this in-

terview, he insisted that the honour was his alone. his clothing demonstrat-

ed that he is cognisant of fashion trends. nonetheless, no fad is permitted to

betray the true image of himself or his age. Comfortable living in the present

day, Timothy Everest continues to sense the pulse of trends, despite discuss-

ing the past in depth.

Why did you leave Haverfordwest in Wales for london? Would you believe

i wanted to become a racing driver? We were living in Kent, which is very near

the capital, and my parents decided to move the family to haverfordwest, my

mother’s hometown. i looked for a job that would pay enough money for me

to do kart and motocross. i was working for a branch in Wales but the com-

pany’s head office was in leeds, so i started to make connections in England. in

addition, many people vacationing in Wales advised me to go to birmingham. it

was there that i met Duran Duran at a nightclub called “rummer”, which was

like the “blitz” in london…

could you describe the neo-romantics and the “Blitz”? it was an interesting

time. The neo-romantics nodded to the past, but did things differently. They

were nostalgic and combined jackets with makeup and electronic music. it was

a fresh interpretation of Cecil beaton’s 20s. because i was quite shy, the makeup

and clothes allowed me to become someone else. There were no brands like

Armani or Versace, and we scoured independent boutiques to create the look.

you “pestered” esteemed tailor tommy nutter for weeks until he finally

gave you a job as his assistant. tell us about the time leading up to this co-

operation. i moved to london were i continued to go to parties. One day, i

saw an advert in the “Evening Standard” newspaper for a “Savile row appren-

tice”. i called again and again and they finally offered me an interview. When i

told my boss in Wales, he seemed a bit envious, saying, “don’t get too upset

if they don’t hire you.” They finally called and offered me a 3½ month proba-

tionary period that ended up lasting 4½ years. And the young woman working

as the Pr Manager at nutter became my wife!

While working at nutter, you met many celebrities, from the Beatles and

the rolling stones to John Galliano. What was this social “catapult” like? i

was young, cool and thought i knew it all. Joining nutter was like playing with a

top-drawer football team. Tommy invited me to parties at Elton John’s house,

as well as to others hosted by his many acquaintances. he was about 40 and

he enjoyed having me and my friends around –we were about 20 at the time.

Elton John’s house was insane: we saw everyone there was to see, from foot-

ballers to freddie Mercury and Joan Collins. At one of those parties when i was

21, a lady offered me 500 Pounds to dive into the pool and i said, “no, i don’t

want to wreck my outfit.”

When did you realise that men were beginning to be more conscious of

their appearance? Men have been interested in clothes since the movie star

eras defined by Cary Grant and Steve McQueen. in the past, however, the men-

tality prevailed that only homosexuals were interested in their appearance. in

the late 80s and early 90s, 17 and 18 year olds began to talk about the shops

where they bought their clothes –and this was a big change that is associated

with the development of brands and consumer buying habits.

are more or fewer clothes purchased these days? More clothes are bought

on the “high street” and present day consumers are more responsive to the

quality of coffee, food and technology than they were in the past. They aren’t

τής της συνεργασίας. Μετακόμισα στο Λονδίνο, όπου συνέχισα να πηγαίνω

σε πάρτι. Μία μέρα πήρα την εφημερίδα “Evening Standard” κι εκεί βρήκα την

αγγελία που έλεγε «ζητείται παιδί για τη Savile row». Έτσι, τους πήρα τηλέφω-

νο ξανά και ξανά και τελικά με κάλεσαν για συνέντευξη. Όταν το είπα στο τότε

αφεντικό μου στην Ουαλία, με ζήλεψε λίγο και μου είπε «μην στεναχωρηθείς, αν

δεν σε πάρουν». Τελικά, με κάλεσαν και μου έδωσαν ένα δοκιμαστικό διάστημα

3½ μηνών που κράτησε 4½ χρόνια. Το κορίτσι που τότε ήταν η υπεύθυνη δη-

μοσίων σχέσεων του nutter, είναι η σύζυγός μου!

Δουλεύοντας για τον nutter γνωρίσατε τους πάντες, από τους Beatles και

τους rolling stones μέχρι τον John Galliano. Πώς ήταν αυτή η κοινωνική «απο-

γείωση»; Ήμουν νέος, αρκετά cool και πίστευα ότι ξέρω τα πάντα. Πηγαίνοντας

Ο Tommy με καλούσε σε πάρτι στο σπίτι του Elton John και όλων των ανθρώ-

πων που γνώριζε. Ήταν γύρω στα 40 και του άρεσε να έχει τριγύρω του εμένα

και τους φίλους μου, που ήμασταν γύρω στα 20. Στο σπίτι του Elton John επι-

κρατούσε μία τρέλα: έβλεπες από ποδοσφαιριστές μέχρι τον freddie Mercury

και την Joan Collins. Στα 21 μου, σε ένα τέτοιο πάρτι, μία κυρία μου πρόσφερε

500 λίρες για να βουτήξουμε στην πισίνα και της απάντησα «όχι, δεν θέλω να

χαλάσω την εμφάνισή μου».

Πότε παρατηρήσατε ότι οι άνδρες άρχισαν να προσέχουν περισσότερο τα

ρούχα τους; Οι άνδρες ενδιαφέρονταν πάντα για τα ρούχα, από την εποχή του

Cary Grant και του Steve McQueen. Βέβαια, παλιότερα υπήρχε η νοοτροπία ότι

οι gay ήταν εκείνοι που ενδιαφέρονταν περισσότερο για το ντύσιμό τους. Στα

τέλη των 80s - αρχές των 90s, άρχισαν οι 17χρονοι, 18χρονοι της εποχής, να

The younger generation understands the importance of holding on to things.

that’s good news for you… good for bespoke. fifteen years ago i didn’t be-

lieve my creations would pass the test of time. i thought they would be worth-

less. bespoke is very expensive, but it retains its value. Dedicating up to 60 hours

on a garment is a significant time investment.

and you discovered that there was a market in bespoke casual, the market

in which you became a pioneer. How has this trend developed? from the

very beginning, i have always felt the need to communicate my work. i met a

young woman who had founded her own public relations firm and it was from

our discussions that the idea of a new bespoke movement evolved –and we

faced the challenge of presenting tailoring in a cool and intriguing manner. The

initiative proved incredibly successful. initially we made jackets and dress shirts,

but soon expanded into dress and casual shirts for the clients of Savile row,

who were primarily from creative industries such as technology, art or graph-

ic design. in celebration of our 25th anniversary, we opened a shop specialis-

ing in this very area. We offer both ready-to-wear and bespoke garments. Af-

ter all, this is a time when the entire world is bespoke, who not clothes? i am

currently intrigued by the idea of integrating technology and traditional clothes.

Επιλέγουν κυρίως πολυτελείς οίκους και τους ενδιαφέρει περισσότερο η ποιό-

τητα του καφέ, του φαγητού και της τεχνολογίας. Δεν είναι σαν τις προηγούμε-

νες γενιές, που αγόραζαν κάτι για να το πετάξουν μετά. Η νεότερη γενιά αντι-

λαμβάνεται την αξία τού να κρατάει κάτι.

Αυτό είναι καλό για εσάς... είναι καλό για το bespoke. Δεκαπέντε χρόνια πριν,

πίστευα ότι δεν θα διαρκούσαν στον χρόνο αυτά που έφτιαχνα, ότι θα ήταν χω-

ρίς αξία. Το bespoke είναι πολύ ακριβό, αλλά έχει αξία. Το να αφιερώνεις μέχρι

και 60 ώρες σε ένα ένδυμα είναι πολύς χρόνος.

Έτσι είδατε ότι υπάρχει αγορά σε αυτό που γίνατε πρωτοπόρος, το bespoke

casual. Ποια είναι η εξέλιξη αυτής της τάσης σήμερα; Από τον πρώτο καιρό,

ένιωσα ότι πρέπει να επικοινωνώ τη δουλειά μου. Συνάντησα ένα νέο κορίτσι

που ξεκινούσε μία εταιρεία δημοσίων σχέσεων και από τις μεταξύ μας συζητή-

σεις προέκυψε η ιδέα αυτής της καινούργιας κίνησης του bespoke –έτσι έπρε-

πε να μιλήσουμε για το ράψιμο με έναν πιο cool και ενδιαφέροντα τρόπο. Η κί-

νηση γνώρισε μεγάλη επιτυχία. Έτσι, πέρα από jackets και πουκάμισα, αρχίσαμε

να δημιουργούμε πουκάμισα και μπλουζάκια για τους πελάτες της Savile row,

οι οποίοι προέρχονται από δημιουργικές βιομηχανίες όπως η τεχνολογία, η τέ-

χνη, ή το graphic design. Στον εορτασμό των 25 μας χρόνων, ανοίξαμε ένα κα-

τάστημα ειδικευμένο σε αυτό. Έχουμε ready-to-wear και bespoke. Σε μία επο-

χή που ο κόσμος γίνεται bespoke, γιατί να μην είναι και τα ρούχα; Τώρα πια με

συγκινεί η ιδέα της ενσωμάτωσης της τεχνολογίας στο παραδοσιακό ντύσιμο.

The idea was conceived by Marianne naim, a Greek-british web designer who

has been living in Greece for the past 10 years. She became a mother and ex-

perienced the challenging nature of going on outings with her child first-hand,

as well as the lack of information related to family-friendly activities in Greece.

“i started asking my friends who were parents, and the broader parent com-

munity, so as to make a list of places and activities in Athens that are ideal for

families,” recalls Marianne. Today, family Goes Out features over 400 places

and activities in Attica and each destination is categorised according to age, ser-

vices and amenities on offer. The website, which is available in three languages

(English, french and Greek), also hosts a family travel blog by Celeste Tat, an

συχνά την ιστορία της να σε διαπερνά, συνθέτοντας μία παρακείμενη πραγμα-

τικότητα, ένα εύγλωττο σκηνικό μέσα στο οποίο διαδραματίζεται η καθημερινή

ζωή. Πουθενά αλλού η αίσθηση αυτή δεν είναι εντονότερη απ’ ό,τι στον πεζό-

δρομο της Διονυσίου Αρεοπαγίτου.

Η διαδρομή, που ξεδιπλώνεται στις υπώρειες του Βράχου της Ακρόπολης,

αποτελεί ένα υπαίθριο μουσείο μοναδικής σπουδαιότητας: εδώ η Ιστορία προ-

βάλλει ανάγλυφη, δεσπόζουσα. Στη μία πλευρά του δρόμου, αναπτύσσεται ένα

μείζον αρχαιολογικό πάρκο, ενώ στην άλλη, ορίζεται το σύνορο της σύγχρονης

πόλης, με κατοικίες, γραφεία, το Μουσείο. Ανάμεσά τους, ο πεζόδρομος συ-

νιστά το πεδίο του διαλόγου, την terra incognita μεταξύ του τότε και του τώρα.

υΠΟ ΤΟ βλεΜΜΑ ΤΗσ ΜελίνΑσ

Στην αφετηρία της διαδρομής στέκει στα δεξιά η προτομή της Μελίνας Μερκού-

ρη (1920-1994), που πρώτη οραματίστηκε την ενοποίηση των αρχαιολογικών

χώρων της Αθήνας, σε έναν «Μεγάλο Περίπατο» που θα αναδείκνυε τα σπου-

δαία κλασικά μνημεία. Λίγο μετά, πάλι στα δεξιά, το άγαλμα του Στρατηγού Μα-

κρυγιάννη, πολεμιστή της Επανάστασης του 1821, που έδωσε και το όνομά του

στη γύρω περιοχή. Πίσω του, ξεκινά η οδός Βύρωνος, μία από τις εισόδους στην

παραδοσιακή Πλάκα, με τα νεοκλασικά σπίτια, τα νησιώτικα στενά, τα μνημεία και

τα παραδοσιακά καταστήματα. Από την απέναντι πλευρά, η οδός Αρεοπαγίτου

διασταυρώνεται με την οδό Μακρυγιάννη, έναν πεζόδρομο με πολλά καφέ και

εστιατόρια. Εκεί, βρίσκεται και ο σταθμός μετρό της Ακρόπολης, όπου εκτίθενται

αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα που αποκαλύφθηκαν κατά την κατασκευή του, καθώς

και αντίγραφα έργων τέχνης από την Ακρόπολη. Στις εισόδους του σταθμού,

βλέπει κάποιος αντίγραφα των γλυπτών από τα αετώματα του Παρθενώνα, ενώ

στις αποβάθρες εκτίθεται αντίγραφο της ζωφόρου του ναού.

Συνεχίζοντας τον περίπατο επί της Αρεοπαγίτου, αριστερά δεσπόζει το κρυ-

στάλλινο Νέο Μουσείο της Ακρόπολης (www.theacropolismuseum.gr), που

A walk in the city centre is often permeated by history, creating an alternate re-

ality, an eloquent scene in which daily life unspools. This feeling is strongest on

Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian walkway. Our starting point is at the foot

of the Sacred rock, and the route traverses an outdoor museum of unparal-

leled importance: history is displayed in all its glory and dominates every step.

A significant archaeological park extends on one side, while the other acts as

the border of a modern city, with homes, offices and the Acropolis Museum.

The pedestrian walkway stretches between the two, a terra incognita linking

the past and present.

Under tHe WatcHfUl GaZe of MelIna MercoUrI

We set off from the statue of Melina Mercouri (1920-1994), who is credi-

ted with first envisioning the unification of the archaeological sites of Athens,

a “Grand Promenade” that would reveal its great classical monuments to the

rest of the world. On our right, just a short distance down the road, we find the

statue of General Makrygiannis, the great warrior of the 1821 revolution and

the man after whom the surrounding area was named. Vyronas Street, one of

the entrances to traditional Plaka, with its neoclassical houses, narrow alleyways

reminiscent of the islands, and traditional shops, starts behind the General. On

the opposite side, Areopagitou Street crosses Makrigianni Street, another pe-

destrian walkway with many cafés and restaurants, as well as the Acropolis met-

ro station, in which archaeological findings uncovered during construction of

the station and replicas of works of art from the Acropolis are exhibited. rep-

licas of sculptures from the pediments of the Parthenon stand at the entranc-

es to the station, and a replica of the frieze of the temple adorns the platforms.

Continuing to walk along Areopagitou, we encounter the new Acropolis

Museum (www.theacropolismuseum.gr), which was designed by architects ber-

nard Tschumi and Mihalis fotiadis and opened in 2009. Since then, it has wel-

comed several million visitors and has been awarded many awards and distinc-

tions. The building consists of two basement levels, a ground level and three

stories, surrounding an area that operates as an open museum-excavation site.

The exhibits are grouped in an exhibition space covering over 14,000 square

meters, and include findings from the slopes of the Sacred rock. Although some

date from the Mycenaean and Geometric periods, the majority of the exhib-

its comprise internationally renowned masterpieces from the Archaic, Classi-

cal and roman periods.

tHe reMnants of War

The Weiler building, which today houses the Museum of the Centre for Acrop-

olis Studies, is located next to the Acropolis Museum and was built in 1836.

Originally designed in the German neo-romantic style, its stone masonry had a

visible coating. in 1920, the building housed the Police barracks and in Decem-

ber 1944 became the centrepiece of civil struggles during the battle of Athens,

known in Greece as the Dekemvriana, a series of clashes between EAM-ElAS

(the Greek left-wing resistance) and the british army supported by the Greek

Government. As a result of the conflicts, the coating was destroyed. its current

image, with its bricks exposed, seems to whisper historical accounts of a very

painful period of the Greek Civil War.

In tHe footsteps of tHe ancIent Greeks

next to the entrance of the museum, on the right, we encounter the so-called

“Mikri Polikatikia” (small block of flats), a magnificent interwar building and one

of the newer monuments of the city, listed by the Ministry of Culture and de-

signed by architect V. Kouremenos in 1930. The building was the subject of

many debates in 2007, when the decision was made to demolish it to ensure

the view of the Parthenon from the new Museum was unimpeded. however,

the reactions of the residents, various governing bodies, associations of archi-

tects etc., led to the abandonment of the idea.

The monuments of the South Slope of the Acropolis can be seen opposite

Mikri Polikatikia. Entering the archaeological site from the entrance at Thrasyllou

and Areopagitou streets, you will find yourself on the ancient road that connect-

ed the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Acropolis. There lies the Sanctuary

of Dionysus Eleuthereus, with traces of the ancient temple, and renowned Di-

onysian Theatre, also built in the 6th century bC. it was in this theatre that the

great dramatists of antiquity, Sophocles, Aeschylus, Euripides and Aristophanes

“taught” their works for the first time. The marble façade of the Choragic Monu-

ment of Thrasyllos was built in 320 bC, around a natural cave on the south wall

of the Acropolis, above the Theatre of Dionysus. The tour of the archaeologi-

cal site still passes alongside the Sanctuary of Asclepius (420 bC), which served

as a hospital, the impressive Choragic Monument of nicias (320 bC), and the

Stoa of Eumenes, which was donated to Athens by King Eumenes ii of Perga-

mon in the 2nd century bC.

lIGHt and lIfe In tHe present day

Another interwar building, also designed by architect V. Kouremenos in 1929,

draws our gaze across Areopagitou, followed by the church of Agia Sophia,

which stands before an earthen plateau with stairs, next to Meropeion Philan-

αναπτύσσονται σε περισσότερα από 14.000 τ.μ., συμπεριλαμβάνονται ευρήμα-

τα από τις κλιτύς (πλαγιές) του Βράχου της Ακρόπολης, κάποια της Μυκηναϊ-

κής και της Γεωμετρικής περιόδου, αλλά κυρίως τα περίφημα σε όλο τον κόσμο

αριστουργήματα της Αρχαϊκής, Κλασικής και Ρωμαϊκής περιόδου.

ΠΟλεΜών κΑΤΑλΟίΠΑ

Στο πλάι του Μουσείου, το κτήριο Weiler, που σήμερα φιλοξενεί το Κέντρο Με-

λετών Ακροπόλεως, κτίστηκε το 1836, σε γερμανικό νεορομαντικό ρυθμό, για

να στεγάσει το πρώτο Στρατιωτικό Νοσοκομείο της Αθήνας. Το 1920 στεγά-

στηκε εκεί το Τάγμα Χωροφυλακής. Αρχικά το κτήριο ήταν επιχρισμένο, αλλά

το 1944 αποτέλεσε πεδίο μαχών κατά τα Δεκεμβριανά, τις ένοπλες συγκρού-

σεις του ΕΑΜ-ΕΛΑΣ με τις κυβερνητικές-βρετανικές δυνάμεις. Αποτέλεσμα της

σύρραξης ήταν να καταστραφούν οι σοβάδες από το εξωτερικό του κτηρίου. Η

σημερινή του εικόνα, με την ακάλυπτη πλινθοδομή, μοιάζει με μία χαμηλόφωνη,

συναινετική ιστορική αναφορά στην επώδυνη περίοδο του ελληνικού εμφυλίου.

σΤΑ βΗΜΑΤΑ Τών ΑρχΑίών

Δίπλα ακριβώς στην είσοδο του Μουσείου, δεξιά, βρίσκεται η λεγόμενη «Μικρή

πολυκατοικία», έξοχο μεσοπολεμικό κτίσμα που ανήκει στα νεότερα μνημεία

της πόλης, διατηρητέο από το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού και σχεδιασμένο από τον

αρχιτέκτονα Β. Κουρεμένο το 1930. Η πολυκατοικία προκάλεσε πολλές συζη-

τήσεις το 2007, όταν αποφασίστηκε η κατεδάφισή της, προκειμένου η θέα του

Παρθενώνα από το Νέο Μουσείο να είναι απρόσκοπτη. Ωστόσο, οι αντιδρά-

σεις των κατοίκων, διάφορων φορέων, συλλόγων αρχιτεκτόνων κ.λπ., οδήγησαν

στην εγκατάλειψη της ιδέας.

Απέναντι, αναπτύσσονται τα μνημεία της Νότιας Πλαγιάς της Ακρόπολης.

Μπαίνοντας στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο από την είσοδο των οδών Θρασύλλου

και Αρεοπαγίτου, βρίσκεστε ήδη στην πορεία ενός πανάρχαιου δρόμου που

συνέδεε το ιερό του Ολυμπίου Διός με την Ακρόπολη. Εδώ, βρίσκεται το Ιερό

του Διονύσου Ελευθερέως, με τα ίχνη του αρχαϊκού ναού, αλλά και το περίφη-

μο Διονυσιακό Θέατρο, επίσης του 6ου π.Χ. αιώνα. Στο θέατρο αυτό, οι σπου-

δαίοι δραματουργοί της αρχαιότητας, Σοφοκλής, Αισχύλος, Ευριπίδης, Αριστο-

φάνης, «δίδαξαν» για πρώτη φορά τα έργα τους. Πάνω από το θέατρο, δεσπό-

ζει το σπήλαιο του χορηγικού μνημείου του Θρασύλλου, του 320 π.Χ., μίας κτι-

στής μαρμάρινης πρόσοψης μπροστά από το φυσικό σπήλαιο του βράχου. Η

περιήγηση στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο περνά ακόμη από το Ιερό του Ασκληπιού,

του 420 π.Χ., που λειτουργούσε ως θεραπευτήριο, το μεγαλόπρεπο χορηγικό

μνημείο του Νικία, του 320 π.Χ., τη Στοά του Ευμένους, δωρεά στην Αθήνα του

βασιλιά της Περγάμου Ευμένη Β', τον 2ο π.Χ. αιώνα.

Φώσ κΑί ΖώΗ σΗΜερΑ

Στην απέναντι πλευρά της Αρεοπαγίτου, το βλέμμα τραβά άλλη μία πολυκατοι-

κία του Μεσοπολέμου, επίσης σχεδιασμένη από τον αρχιτέκτονα Β. Κουρεμέ-

thropic foundation. if you happen to walk along Areopagitou in the evening, this

section of the walkway is transformed into a bright play area. The children take

over the public space with their noisy games and perpetual motion, lending the

street a character that is more casual, earthier, and far removed from its monu-

mental dimension. The Parthenon supervises from above, and although it is no

longer the focus of the scene, it fits seamlessly in with the life of the residents.

Continuing our walk, we encounter the wide steps to the Odeon of herodes

Atticus on the Acropolis side, built by herodes, the wealthy Athenian sophist

in honour of his wife Aspasia Annia rigillis. The theatre is currently used main-

ly for musical events and features 32 rows of marble stands, a semi-circular or-

chestra and three-storey scenic wall behind the stage. Today, the herodeon

hosts frequent theatrical performances and concerts.

acropolIs: Α spectacUlar pHenoMenon

At the end of Areopagitou Street, at the intersection with Apostolou Pavlou

pedestrian walkway, which slopes down towards the temple of hephaestus,

a cobblestone path on the right marks the starting point for the ascent to the

Acropolis. from there, following the route that was reconstructed by architect

D. Pikionis and masterfully integrates the ancient monuments, traces of earlier

habitation, trees and rocks in an organic landscape, we enter the world of clas-

sical Athens: the sanctuary of the Acropolis. This emblematic monument reigns

νο, το 1929, και λίγο μετά, μπροστά σε ένα χωμάτινο πλάτωμα με σκαλιά, το εκ-

κλησάκι της Αγίας Σοφίας, πλάι στο Μερόπειο Ίδρυμα. Αν τύχει και κάνετε τον

περίπατο κάποια απογευματινή ώρα, θα δείτε το κομμάτι αυτό του πεζόδρο-

μου να μετατρέπεται σε φωτεινό παιδότοπο. Τα παιδιά της περιοχής, που οικει-

οποιούνται τον δημόσιο χώρο με το θορυβώδες παιχνίδι και τη διαρκή κίνησή

τους, δίνουν στον δρόμο ένα χαρακτήρα που αποσπάται από τη μνημειώδη δι-

άσταση, πιο καθημερινό, πιο γήινο. Ο Παρθενώνας, που επιβλέπει από ψηλά,

δεν αποτελεί τώρα το επίκεντρο, αλλά εντάσσεται ήπια στη ζωή των κατοίκων.

Συνεχίζοντας τον περίπατο, στην πλευρά της Ακρόπολης ξεκινούν τα σκαλο-

πάτια που οδηγούν στο Ωδείο Ηρώδου του Αττικού, το οποίο έχτισε ο Ηρώ-

δης, βαθύπλουτος Αθηναίος σοφιστής, προς τιμήν της γυναίκας του Ασπασίας

Αννίας Ρηγίλλης. Το κτήριο προοριζόταν κυρίως για μουσικές εκδηλώσεις και

διαμορφωνόταν με 32 σειρές από μαρμάρινες κερκίδες, ημικυκλική ορχήστρα

και τριώροφο υπερυψωμένο σκηνικό οικοδόμημα πίσω από τη σκηνή. Σήμε-

ρα, στο Ωδείο πραγματοποιούνται συχνά θεατρικές παραστάσεις ή συναυλίες.

Στο τέλος της οδού Αρεοπαγίτου, στη συμβολή με τον πεζόδρομο της Απο-

στόλου Παύλου που κατηφορίζει προς τον ναό του Ηφαίστου, ένα πλακόστρω-

το μονοπάτι στα δεξιά αποτελεί την αφετηρία για την ανάβαση στην Ακρόπο-

ώς αποφασίσατε να ασχοληθείτε με το κό-

σμημα; Η ιδέα μού ήρθε πέρυσι, όταν μία φίλη μου που σχεδιάζει κοσμήματα,

έφτιαξε κάποια κομμάτια ειδικά για μένα. Εκείνη τη στιγμή, σκέφτηκα πως θα ήθε-

λα να δημιουργήσω και τη δική μου συλλογή. Ήθελα, έτσι κι αλλιώς, να επενδύσω

επιχειρηματικά στη μόδα, αλλά όχι σε ρούχα. Άρχισα να κάνω ταξίδια, να ψάχνω

για πέτρες, πολύτιμους λίθους και να μελετώ τα καινούργια στιλ διεθνώς. Ωστόσο,

με τη δουλειά τον χειμώνα, λόγω γυρισμάτων, δεν προλάβαινα καν να το σκεφτώ.

Μόλις, όμως, σταμάτησε η σειρά που έκανα στο Mega, λόγω οικονομικών προ-

βλημάτων του καναλιού, την ίδια μέρα παίρνω τη φίλη μου και της λέω, «Ξεκινάμε»!

είχατε προηγούμενη εμπειρία και σχέση με τον σχεδιασμό κοσμημάτων; Όχι,

δεν είχα ιδέα, αλλά ευτυχώς με το που έπιασα την πρώτη ύλη στα χέρια μου, ένιω-

σα σαν να ήταν κάτι που ήξερα από πάντα. Δεν δυσκολεύτηκα να το μάθω –ίσως

γιατί το ήθελα πολύ. Η διαδικασία παραγωγής ενός κοσμήματος είναι απίστευτα

αγχολυτική, συγκεντρώνομαι σ’ αυτό και ξεφεύγω εντελώς από την πραγματικό-

τητα και από τους ρυθμούς της ζωής μου. Με ισορροπεί απόλυτα σε σχέση και

με την επαγγελματική μου ζωή ως ηθοποιού.

Τι προτείνετε ως τάσεις στα κοσμήματα φέτος το καλοκαίρι; Προτείνουμε

πολλά διαφορετικά στιλ. Έχουμε chic κοσμήματα με ημιπολύτιμους λίθους, επι-

χρυσωμένες και ασημένιες αλυσίδες και έχουμε και τα πιο boho, με μεγαλύτερες,

ημιπολύτιμες, ενεργειακές πέτρες, που μας «ταξιδεύουν» στο καλοκαίρι, στα ελ-

ληνικά νησιά και στη θάλασσα. Τα περισσότερα από τα κομμάτια μας είναι μονα-

δικά, κυριολεκτικά, και επειδή σκέφτομαι λίγο ρομαντικά, θα ήθελα να συνεχιστεί

αυτό, ώστε κάθε πελάτισσα να φοράει κάτι μοναδικό, εκτός από κάποια κοσμήμα-

τα που, αναγκαστικά, θα βγαίνουν σε μεγαλύτερη ποσότητα. Όλα τα κοσμήματα

Έχω την αίσθηση ότι είστε ένας άνθρωπος που, όποιο επάγγελμα και να κά-

νατε, αυτό θα έπρεπε να περνάει μέσα από την τέχνη. είναι αλήθεια; Ναι. Ζω

How did you decide to work with jewellery? The idea came to me last year,

when a friend of mine who designs jewellery made some pieces just for me. At

that moment i wished i could create my own collection. i’d wanted to invest

in a fashion business for some time, but not clothes. i started travelling, look-

ing for stones, precious gems and studied the new international styles. how-

ever, when winter came, and with it filming and plenty of work, i didn’t have

much time to think about it. As soon as the series i was working on for Mega

TV wrapped due to financial constraints, i called my girlfriend that very same

day and said, “let’s get started!”

do you have any experience designing jewellery? no, i don’t, but fortunately,

as soon as i touched the materials with my hands, i felt as if it was something i’d

always known. i found it easy to learn –perhaps because i wanted it so much.

The jewellery making process is an incredible stress reliever. i concentrate on

it and manage to shake off reality and the disquieting elements of my life. it’s

the ideal counterbalance for my professional life as an actress.

Which jewellery trends do you recommend for this summer? We offer

many different styles. We have chic jewellery with semi-precious stones, gold

plated and silver chains, and we also have more boho pieces with larger, semi-

precious energising stones that take us on a journey to the Greek islands and

the sea. Most of our pieces are quite literally unique, and because i have a ro-

mantic mind, i would like to continue in this way, so that each of our custom-

ers wears one-of-a-kind pieces, with the exception of a few items that will be

unavoidably produced in greater quantities. All our jewellery can be seen at

I have the feeling that you are the type of person that needs to have

contact with art, no matter which profession you may choose. do you

agree? yes, i live an artistic life. On the other hand, i could happily live a life

καλλιτεχνικά, από την άλλη, όμως, θα μπορούσα να ζήσω και πέρα από το επάγ-

γελμα του ηθοποιού. Δεν είμαι από τους ανθρώπους που αν δεν παίξω μία σεζόν

στο θέατρο, θα μου στοιχίσει. Εγώ ζω καλλιτεχνικά και μέσα από τον σχεδιασμό

κοσμημάτων σε ένα χώρο δικό μου, με λίγους ανθρώπους, πιο προστατευμένο,

χωρίς την έκθεση που έχει το επάγγελμα του ηθοποιού.

Αλήθεια, έχετε νιώσει πολλές φορές εκτεθειμένη; Ναι, αλλά ποτέ με την άσχη-

μη έννοια του όρου. Έτσι είναι το επάγγελμα του ηθοποιού: υπάρχουν πλευρές

αυτής της έκθεσης που μου αρέσουν και κρύβουν τη ματαιοδοξία και τη φιλοδο-

ξία που έχουν όλοι όσοι κάνουν αυτό το επάγγελμα. Υπάρχουν όμως και στιγμές

που χρειάζομαι λίγη απομόνωση και ηρεμία –να μη βλέπει κανείς τι κάνω. Το έχω

ανάγκη. Φυσικά, όταν ο κόσμος σού δείχνει την αγάπη του, χωρίς να σε ενοχλεί,

είναι καλοδεχούμενος. Λαμβάνω τόσο ωραία μηνύματα από τον κόσμο, που θα

ήταν αχαριστία να πω ότι δεν το αντέχω όλο αυτό.

Αυτό τον καιρό ασχολείστε αποκλειστικά με το κόσμημα; Ναι, γιατί είμαστε λί-

γοι άνθρωποι και πολλές οι παραγγελίες και επειδή όταν αναλαμβάνω κάτι, θέλω

να έχω εγώ τον έλεγχο και την ευθύνη της προσπάθειας, δίνοντας το 100% του

εαυτού μου. Και στο κομμάτι της ηθοποιίας, αφήνω τα πράγματα να εξελιχθούν,

να διερευνήσω τις προτάσεις που θα μου έρθουν, τι ανάγκες θα έχω, τι θα θέλω

περισσότερο να κάνω και να αποφασίσω.

Ποια διάσημη θα θέλατε να φοράει τα κοσμήματά σας; Είμαι πολύ τυχερή, για-

τί την πρώτη μέρα που άνοιξε το e-shop, ήμουν καλεσμένη στην Ελένη Μενεγάκη

και τα δώρα που της έκανα τα έχει φορέσει τόσες φορές στην εκπομπή, που είναι

σαν να μου έχει κάνει την καλύτερη διαφήμιση. Την έχω ευχαριστήσει δημόσια.

Αυτό η Ελένη δεν το κάνει συχνά και στην Ελλάδα είναι η καλύτερη που μπορεί να

τα φορέσει, καθώς είναι τόσο δημοφιλής και αγαπητή.

Διακρίνω ότι σας χαρακτηρίζει η συστολή και η ωριμότητα. Ήσαστε πάντα

έτσι; Από μικρή ήμουν πολύ υπεύθυνη, με στόχους, και ποτέ δεν «ξέφυγα», ούτε

καν στην εφηβεία. Δεν έκανα τρέλες. Πάντα είχα μία έμφυτη ισορροπία.

σας κουράζει αυτό; Πολύ. Έχω το σύνδρομο της καλής μαθήτριας, θεωρώ ότι

απαγορεύεται να κάνω λάθος και για όλα όσα συμβαίνουν στη ζωή μου, καταλο-

γίζω ευθύνες σε μένα και ποτέ στους άλλους. Έχω την εικόνα του καλού παιδιού,

με ευγένεια, σεβασμό και εκτίμηση προς τους άλλους, αλλά αυτό κάποιες φορές

με λυγίζει και με αδειάζει. Από την άλλη, λέω «αυτό είμαι» και τουλάχιστον έχω

πέντε φίλους που στην κρίσιμη στιγμή, βλέπω πόσο με εκτιμούν και με αγαπούν

γι’ αυτό που είμαι. Αυτό και μόνον αξίζει.

Πολλοί λένε ότι έχετε το κοκαλάκι της νυχτερίδας, πως ό,τι και να κάνετε, σε

όποια θεατρική, τηλεοπτική ή κινηματογραφική παραγωγή και αν συμμετέχε-

τε, αυτή θα έχει επιτυχία. Τι απαντάτε; Η αλήθεια είναι ότι όλες οι επαγγελματι-

κές μου επιλογές είχαν να μου δώσουν πράγματα. Προφανώς και μετράνε όλες

οι συνθήκες. Ίσως και η τύχη. Εγώ, από τη μεριά μου, αρχικά λειτουργώ με το έν-

στικτο και στη συνέχεια δίνω πάντα τον καλύτερο εαυτό μου, με προσπάθεια και

διαρκή εξέλιξη, γιατί έχω απαιτήσεις από μένα. Αυτό βοηθάει όταν και οι άλλοι εί-

ναι έτσι, γιατί παρασύρει ο ένας τον άλλο και αυτό μόνο σε θετικά αποτελέσμα-

τα μπορεί να οδηγήσει.

είστε πολύ ενεργή στα social media, ιδιαιτέρως στο ίnstagram. Πώς προέκυψε

αυτό; Τυχαία. Επειδή τα δύο τελευταία καλοκαίρια δεν δούλευα, κατ’ επιλογή, και

όντας στη Μύκονο διακοπές, ή σε μία ωραία παραλία, μ’ άρεσε να βγάζω φωτο-

γραφίες. Έτσι, άρχισα σιγά σιγά να ανεβάζω όλο και πιο συχνά, μ’ άρεσε και η αντί-

δραση του κόσμου και τώρα έχει πάρει άλλες διαστάσεις πια και χαίρομαι γιατί για

μένα είναι ξεκούραση ο χρόνος που θα ασχοληθώ να ανεβάσω μία φωτογραφία.

that doesn’t involve acting. i’m not one of those people who would find it

difficult to come to terms with not acting in the theatre every season. i live

artistically and through jewellery design in a space that is mine, with few

people, that is more protected and without the exposure of being an actor.

Have you often felt exposed? yes, but never in the negative sense. it’s what

the life of an actor entails: there are aspects of this exposure that i like, which

hide the vanity and ambition that everybody in this profession has. There

are moments, however, that i need a little privacy and tranquillity –when no

one can see what i’m doing. i need it. but when people do show me their

love without being intrusive, i welcome it. i receive such lovely messages

from fans that it would be ungrateful to say that i can’t bear the exposure.

are you working exclusively with jewellery at the present time? yes, be-

cause we are few people and there are lots of orders, and because when

i undertake something, i want to have control and responsibility and give

100% of myself. And when it comes to acting, i let things develop and ex-

plore the offers i receive, the needs i have, what i want more –and then i

decide.

Which star would you like to wear your jewellery? i’m very fortunate to

have been invited to Eleni Menegaki on the first day we launched the e-shop,

and she has worn the gifts i bought her several times on the show, which has

proved to be the best of advertisements. i’ve thanked her publically. Eleni

doesn’t do this often, and she’s the best star in Greece that could wear my

pieces, because she is so popular and loved.

you seem both shy and mature. Were you always like this? i’ve been very

responsible, with goals, since i was a young girl, and never got “out of hand”

as an adolescent. i didn’t do crazy things. i’ve always had an innate balance.

do you ever find it tiring? Very. i suffer from the good student syndrome

and feel that it’s forbidden to make mistakes and attribute everything that

happens in my life to me –never to others. i project the image of a good girl,

who is kind, respectful and appreciative, but it is sometimes too much of a

burden and makes me feel empty. On the other hand, i say, “this is who i

am”, and at least i have a handful of friends who appreciate me and love me

for just as i am. That alone makes it all worthwhile.

Many say that you’re charmed –that whatever you do or whichever thea-

trical, television or film production you’re involved in will succeed. What

do you say? The truth is that all my professional choices left me with some-

thing, but it goes without saying that the conditions played their part. And

perhaps luck. i operate instinctively and always give my best self, expending

a great deal of effort and continuous development, because i’m very de-

manding of myself. This helps when others are the same way, because we

encourage one another and this only produces positive results.

you’re very active on social media, particularly on Instagram. How did

that come about? randomly. i chose not to work the past two summers,

and was on vacation on Mykonos, or on a nice beach –and i enjoyed tak-

ing pictures. i slowly started to post more and more often, and i liked the

response i received. it’s now taken on a new dimension and i’m happy, be-

cause i find the time it takes to post a photograph relaxing.

you’ve taken the place of the paparazzi that used to chase you… it was

an instinctive response, and there came a time when i took on the role so

they wouldn’t chase me. That’s the very reason that i post pictures with my

υποκαθιστάτε όμως και τους παπαράτσι που σας κυνηγούν… Μου βγήκε εν-

στικτωδώς και από ένα σημείο και μετά, το έκανα κυρίως για να μη με κυνηγούν.

Ειδικά τις φωτογραφίες με τον σύντροφό μου, γι’ αυτό τον λόγο τις ανεβάζω. Για

να μη με κυνηγούν, να μη χρειάζεται να «πουλιέται» η προσωπική μου ζωή.

Τι ρόλο παίζει ο έρωτας στη ζωή σας; Πολύ σημαντικό ρόλο, είναι η ισορροπία

μου για όλα τα πράγματα, ειδικά όταν βρίσκομαι σε μία υγιή σχέση. Με έχει βο-

ηθήσει σε όλους τους τομείς της ζωής μου και ψυχολογικά, και στις αποφάσεις

μου, και στις επιλογές μου. Έχω αλλάξει αρκετά και φαίνεται αυτό. Έχω μεγαλύ-

τερη αυτοπεποίθηση.

Τι άλλο θέλετε να κάνετε στη ζωή σας; Θέλω να κάνω οικογένεια, θέλω να προ-

χωρήσω τις συλλογές με τα κοσμήματα και στο εξωτερικό, όπου οι πελάτες δεν θα

επιλέξουν το κόσμημά μου επειδή είμαι γνωστή ηθοποιός, αλλά γιατί τους αρέσει.

Θέλω λοιπόν να δημιουργήσω ειδικές συλλογές, με ακόμα καλύτερα υλικά, για τους

πελάτες του εξωτερικού. Ως ηθοποιός, θέλω να κάνω επιλεγμένες δουλειές και να

μη νιώθω ότι έχω την οικονομική ανάγκη να δουλέψω σε κάτι που δεν με εκφράζει.

θα ήθελα να μας πείτε ποια είναι τα αγαπημένα σας μέρη εδώ. Αγαπώ πολύ το

κέντρο και τώρα το καλοκαίρι κατεβαίνω και στην παραλιακή. Φυσικά, έρχομαι πο-

λύ συχνά και στην πισίνα του hilton Αθηνών, γιατί είναι σαν όαση μέσα στην πό-

λη: κάνεις το μπάνιο σου, απολαμβάνεις τον ήλιο και τις υπηρεσίες που σου προ-

σφέρονται στο εστιατόριο και στο bar και επιστρέφεις στο σπίτι σου ξεκούραστη.

What role does love play in your life? A very important one, it’s my balance

for everything, especially when i’m in a healthy relationship. it’s helped me in

all areas in my life and with my psychological well-being, my decisions and my

choices. i’ve changed a lot and it shows. i’m more confident.

What else would you like to do with your life? i want to have a family, i want

to launch my jewellery collections abroad, where people won’t buy it because

i’m a famous actress, but because they like the pieces. i would like to create

special collections, with even better materials for customers abroad. As an ac-

tress, i would like to choose my roles without needing to work on something

that doesn’t express who i am, simply for the money.

can you tell us about your favourite places in the city? i love the centre and

the coast in the summer. i often come to the hilton Athens pool, because it’s

like an oasis in the city: you can swim, enjoy the sun and the services offered in

the restaurant and bar, and return home completely rejuvenated.

Κό ΠεριΒάλλόν διαμορφώνεται με τρόπο που να εξυπηρετεί το σήμερα,

τις σύγχρονες ανάγκες των ανθρώπων της. Η πόλη που κάθε φορά βλέπουμε,

εικονογραφεί το παρόν, τη δεδομένη συγκυρία –με εκφραστικά της μέσα τους

δρόμους, τα κτήρια, τις υποδομές, την ανθρώπινη δραστηριότητα. Μέσα σε

αυτό τον αστικό λαβύρινθο, διάσπαρτα, εδώ κι εκεί, τα τοπόσημα της πόλης δι-

ακόπτουν την πλοκή της καθημερινότητας, επαναφέροντας τον περαστικό σε

κάτι πιο στοιχειώδες, πιο γήινο, στους βασικούς άξονες επάνω στους οποίους

το παρόν που σήμερα αντιλαμβανόμαστε, αναπτύχθηκε.

Το Παναθηναϊκό στάδιο, ή Καλλιμάρμαρο, το αρχαιότερο εν λειτουργία στά-

διο του κόσμου, από τα πιο εμφατικά τοπόσημα της Αθήνας, προκαλεί αυτό το

βαθύτερο βλέμμα –μία καταχώριση στο ημερολόγιο της πόλης που απαιτεί το

μερίδιο του σήμερα που της αναλογεί.

Βρίσκεται στη λεωφόρο Βασιλέως Κωνσταντίνου, κάτω από τον λόφο του Αρ-

δηττού. Με την πρώτη ματιά, γίνεται προφανές πως η μορφή του διαφέρει πολύ

από αυτή των σύγχρονων σταδίων: ακολουθώντας τις αντιλήψεις και τα μέτρα

του 4ου π.Χ. αιώνα, είναι πεταλόσχημο, με συνολικό μήκος στίβου 204 περί-

που μέτρα και πλάτος 33,35 μέτρα. Ανεγέρθηκε από τον Λυκούργο το 330 π.Χ.,

έξω από τα τείχη της πόλης, σε ένα φυσικό κοίλωμα που σχηματιζόταν ανάμε-

σα στους λόφους Αρδηττό και Άγρα. Μπροστά ακριβώς από την είσοδο του

σταδίου, κυλούσε ο Ιλισσός, το ένα από τα δύο ποτάμια της Αθήνας, που σήμε-

ρα έχει πλήρως επικαλυφθεί. Ένα μικρό μόνο τμήμα του παραμένει ακάλυπτο,

λίγο νοτιότερα από το στάδιο, προς την πλευρά του ναού του Ολυμπίου Διός.

Ο ρΟλΟσ ΤΟυ σΤΑΔίΟυ σΤΗν ΑρχΑίΟΤΗΤΑ

Το στάδιο ανεγέρθηκε προκειμένου να φιλοξενεί τους γυμνικούς αγώνες των

Μεγάλων Παναθηναίων. Τα Μεγάλα Παναθήναια, η σημαντικότερη γιορτή στην

αρχαία Ελλάδα μετά τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες, τελούνταν κάθε τέσσερα χρό-

νια στην Αθήνα προς τιμήν της θεάς Αθηνάς και περιλάμβαναν μουσικούς και

αθλητικούς αγώνες με απονομή επάθλων. Όσον αφορά στους αθλητικούς αγώ-

νες που διεξάγονταν στο Παναθηναϊκό στάδιο, γνωρίζουμε από επιγραφή του

4ου αιώνα π.Χ. τόσο τα αγωνίσματα όσο και τα έπαθλα, τα οποία τα μετρούσαν

σε αμφορείς ελαιολάδου. Νέοι από όλη την Ελλάδα, χωρισμένοι στις κατηγο-

ρίες των «παίδων», των «αγένειων» και των «ανδρών», διαγωνίζονταν στο στά-

διο (αγώνας ταχύτητας), στο πένταθλο (ακοντισμός, άλμα εις μήκος, δισκοβο-

λία, στάδιο και πάλη), στο παγκράτιο, στην πυγμή και στην πάλη.

Το Καλλιμάρμαρο ανακαινίστηκε το 140 μ.Χ. από τον Ηρώδη Αττικό, στη μορ-

φή που αποκαλύφθηκε από τις ανασκαφές του 1870. Υπολογίζεται ότι χωρούσε

50.000 θεατές και είχε, όπως και σήμερα, κτιστές σκάλες ανάμεσα στις κερκίδες.

Από τον Ηρώδη πραγματοποιήθηκε και η μετατροπή της αρχικής ευθύγραμ-

μης μορφής σε πεταλόσχημη, με την προσθήκη της σφενδόνης, χαρακτηριστι-

κής μορφής των ελληνικών σταδίων στους Ρωμαϊκούς χρόνους. Αναπόσπα-

στο στοιχείο στον αγωνιστικό χώρο ήταν οι αμφιπρόσωπες ερμαϊκές στήλες,

λίθινα λατρευτικά αγαλμάτια του Ερμή, αντίγραφα των οποίων βλέπει κανείς και

σήμερα στον χώρο, αλλά και το πλήθος αγαλμάτων που κοσμούσαν το στάδιο.

Στους Βυζαντινούς χρόνους, χάθηκε η αίγλη του σταδίου και τμήματά του

χρησιμοποιήθηκαν ως οικοδομικά υλικά για κτίσματα της εποχής. Την εικόνα

lustrate the present day, the current situation –expressing themselves through

their roads, buildings, infrastructure and human activity. The city’s landmarks are

scattered throughout this urban maze, interrupting the banality of day-to-day life,

and for passers-by, they recapture something more elemental, earthier, on the

very foundations upon which the present day is perceived to have developed.

The Panathenaic Stadium, or Kallimarmaro, the oldest operating stadium in

the entire world, one of the most distinctive landmarks of Athens, deserves a

closer look –an entry in the calendar of the city that demands the share of the

present it rightfully deserves.

it is located on Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue, under Ardittos hill. At first

glance, it varies in obvious ways from modern stadiums: in the style of the 4th

century bC, it is horseshoe shaped, with a total track length and width of ap-

proximately 204 and 33.35 metres respectively. it was erected outside the

city walls by lycurgus in 330 bC, in a natural cavity formed between Ardittos

and Agra hills. ilissos river, one of the two rivers of Athens, flowed directly in

front of the entrance to the stadium and is now almost entirely covered. Only

a small section remains uncovered, just to the south of the stadium, near the

Temple of Olympian Zeus.

tHe role of tHe stadIUM In antIQUIty

The stadium was built to host athletic Great Panathenaic Games. The Great

Panathenaic festival, the most important festival of Ancient Greece after the

Olympic Games, was held in Athens every four years in honour of the goddess

Athena, and included musicians and athletic competitions with a prize giving cer-

emony. The athletic competitions were held in the Panathenaic Stadium, and

an inscription from the 4th century bC indicates that both the events and priz-

es were measured by amphorae filled with olive oil. young men from all over

Greece, were divided into “boys”, “youths” and “men” categories, and compet-

ed in races, the pentathlon (javelin, long jump, discus, stadion (short foot race)

and wrestling), and the pankration (a combination of wrestling and boxing).

The Kallimarmaro was renovated in 140 AD by herodes Atticus, in the form

revealed by the excavations of 1870. it is estimated to hold 50,000 specta-

tors and featured stairs between the stands, just as it does today. herodes al-

so carried out the conversion of the original rectilinear stadium into its current

horseshoe shape with the addition of the sphendone, which was as character-

istic form of Greek stadia in roman times. The bifacial herms were integral el-

ements of the track, stone statues of hermes, replicas of which can be seen in

the stadium today, as were the plethora of statues that adorned the stadium.

in the byzantine era, the stadium lost its glamour, and sections of the struc-

ture were used as building materials. The image of this abandonment and de-

struction was perceived by European travellers, who were the first to refer

to the ruins of the stadium with admiration, from the 14th century onwards.

Οί ΠρώΤΟί συγχρΟνΟί ΟλυΜΠίΑκΟί Αγώνεσ

Με την ίδρυση του νέου ελληνικού κράτους και μέσα στο πλαίσιο αξιοποίησης

της αρχαιοελληνικής παράδοσης για τη διαμόρφωση μίας ευδιάκριτης εθνικής

ταυτότητας, ξεκίνησαν ήδη από το 1836 οι ανασκαφές, που αποκάλυψαν ίχνη

του ρωμαϊκού σταδίου του Ηρώδη. Στα ευρήματα αυτά βασίστηκε ο αρχιτέκτο-

νας Αναστάσης Μεταξάς, το 1869, που ανέλαβε την ανακατασκευή από πεντε-

λικό μάρμαρο, όπως ακριβώς και το Ηρώδειο στάδιο.

Ωστόσο, πέρα από την αναμφισβήτητη αρχαιολογική και ιστορική του αξία, τα

Καλλιμάρμαρο αποτελεί κι ένα από τα μείζονα σύμβολα του αθλητισμού, καθώς

εδώ πραγματοποιήθηκαν οι πρώτοι σύγχρονοι Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες, το 1896,

εγκαινιάζοντας τη μεγαλειώδη αυτή γιορτή του παγκόσμιου πολιτισμού. Ήδη

από το 1875, στον χώρο του Παναθηναϊκού σταδίου διεξάγονταν οι Ζάππειες

Ολυμπιάδες, με τη χορηγία του Ευάγγελου Ζάππα. Το 1894, όμως, ο Γάλλος

βαρόνος Pierre de Coubertin ανακοίνωσε στο Διεθνές Αθλητικό Συνέδριο του

Παρισιού τη βούλησή του να διοργανώσει τους πρώτους διεθνείς Ολυμπιακούς

Αγώνες της νεότερης Ιστορίας. Το Παναθηναϊκό στάδιο, με τις προφανείς αρχι-

τεκτονικές αναφορές του στην κλασική αρχαιότητα, το λίκνο των Αγώνων, κρί-

θηκε ο πλέον κατάλληλος χώρος για τη διεξαγωγή, γεγονός που το κατέστη-

σε παγκόσμιο σύμβολο του αθλητισμού. Η υπέρογκη δαπάνη για την ανακατα-

σκευή του καλύφθηκε από τον Γεώργιο Αβέρωφ.

Οι πρώτοι Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες πραγματοποιήθηκαν από τις 25 Μαρτίου μέχρι

τις 3 Απριλίου, με μεγάλη επιτυχία. Τότε ακούστηκε για πρώτη φορά ο Ολυμπια-

κός Ύμνος, σε ποίηση του Κωστή Παλαμά μελοποιημένη από τον Σπύρο Σαμα-

ρά. Το χρυσό μετάλλιο του μαραθώνιου δρόμου κατέκτησε ο Σπύρος Λούης.

Από τότε, στο Καλλιμάρμαρο έχουν φιλοξενηθεί πολλές αθλητικές και πολι-

τιστικές εκδηλώσεις, όπως συναυλίες και παραστάσεις. Μεγάλη στιγμή του στα-

δίου ήταν ο τελικός Κυπέλλου Κυπελλούχων στο μπάσκετ, την περίοδο 1967-

68: τον αγώνα μεταξύ ΑΕΚ και Σλάβιας Πράγας παρακολούθησαν περισσότε-

ροι από 80.000 θεατές, αριθμός που παραμένει αξεπέραστος για αγώνα μπά-

σκετ. Στιγμές δόξας έζησε επίσης το στάδιο κατά τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες

της Αθήνας το 2004, με το άθλημα της τοξοβολίας και τον τερματισμό του μα-

ραθώνιου δρόμου.

ving ancient tradition in order to shape a distinct national identity, excavations

began in 1836, which uncovered traces of the roman stadium of herodes. it

was on the basis of these findings that the plan for its reconstruction was pre-

pared by architect Anastasis Metaxas in 1869. The reconstruction of the stadi-

um with the use of Pentelic marble is distinguished by its high degree of fidelity

to the ancient monument of herodes.

Moreover, beyond its unquestionable archaeological and historical signifi-

cance, the Kallimarmaro is also a major symbol of athletics, as the first modern

Olympic Games were held there in 1896, reintroducing this magnificent cel-

ebration into world culture. The Zappian Olympiad, sponsored by Evangelos

Zappas, was held in the Panathenaic Stadium as early as 1875. however, at the

international Athletic Congress of Paris in 1894, frenchman baron Pierre de

Coubertain announced his willingness to organise the first international Olym-

pic Games in modern history. The Panathenaic Stadium, with its obvious archi-

tectural references to classical antiquity, the birthplace of the Games, was the

most appropriate venue, and it became a global symbol for athletics. The ex-

orbitant cost of reconstruction was covered by Georgios Averof.

The first modern Olympic Games commenced on 25 March and concluded

on 3 April, and were a resounding success. it was in the Panathenaic Stadium

that the Olympic hymn was heard for the first time, with lyrics by poet Kostis

Palamas and music by composer Spyros Samaras. The gold medal in the Mara-

thon race was won by Spyros louis.

Since then, the Kallimarmaro has hosted many athletic and cultural events

such as concerts and shows. The stadium stood proud in all its glory for the fi-

nal Winners Cup in basketball (1967-1968): the match between AEK Athens

and Slavia Prague was attended by over 80,000 spectators, the largest number

of fans to ever attend a basketball game. The Athens 2004 Olympics also pro-

vided moments of suspense and emotion during the archery contests and as

the finishing line for the Marathon race.

ΟΜίσΜΑΤίκΟ ΜΟυσείΟ

Μία εμβληματική σιδερένια πόρτα, σχεδιασμένη από τον Ερνέστο Τσίλλερ, μας

υποδέχεται σ’ ένα από τα πιο καλαίσθητα και ατμοσφαιρικά σημεία στην Αθή-

να. Το Νομισματικό Μουσείο δεν είναι ένα τυχαίο μέρος: «μυρίζει» ιστορία και

κρύβει θησαυρούς μίας άλλης εποχής, σε κάθε του γωνιά. Συγκεκριμένα, εδώ

έμενε κάποτε ο Ερρίκος Σλήμαν. Το σημερινό Νομισματικό Μουσείο, άλλο-

τε, ήταν η οικία του αρχαιολόγου και μάλιστα της είχε δώσει την ονομασία «Ιλί-

ου Μέλαθρον». Ο ίδιος είχε ιδιαίτερη αγάπη στα φυτά και συνήθιζε να περνά-

ει πολλές ώρες στον κήπο του μεγάρου του. Ο κήπος, αν και πέρασαν πολλές

δεκαετίες, παραμένει ζωντανός και δροσερός. Ανάμεσα στις ροδιές, τις φιστι-

κιές, τις ροδακινιές, τις βερικοκιές και τις κληματαριές –πολλά από τα δέντρα τα

είχε φυτέψει ο ίδιος ο Σλήμαν–, βρίσκουμε ένα πολυγωνικό κιόσκι: δεν είναι άλ-

λο από το καφέ του μουσείου, που δημιούργησε το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού το

2007. Από τότε, κάθε Αθηναίος, περαστικός, φιλότεχνος, επισκέπτης ή τουρί-

στας, έχει την ευκαιρία να σταματήσει για λίγο τον χρόνο και να απολαύσει έναν

καφέ ή ένα κρασί μέσα σ’ έναν καταπράσινο παράδεισο, προτού συνεχίσει τη

μέρα του στην πολυσυλλεκτική Αθήνα. Ιδανική επιλογή για τα καλοκαιρινά βρά-

The building that houses the numismatic Museum was once the residence of

When the “vehicle” is the impressive and unarguably dazzling Acropolis Mu-

decided to stop in for a delicious lunch. And the menu prevails, thanks to its

Greek colour and local Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) ingredients.

Santorini fava (split pea dip) served with caper leaves and Aitolikou fish roe are

two dishes that are well worth sampling. On weekdays from one to four, while

lunching or sipping a coffee, visitors have the opportunity to listen to live, lyri-

cal melodies played on the harp. And on friday evenings, the restaurant plays

host to well-known musicians from the Athenian jazz scene.

Ένα καφέ με φως και γεύσεις από Κυκλάδες στο κέντρο της Αθήνας: αυτό ακρι-

βώς είναι το Cycladic Café, εντός του Μουσείου Κυκλαδικής Τέχνης, του οποίου

ο σχεδιασμός έγινε από το βραβευμένο αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο Kois Associated

Architects, με πηγή έμπνευσης τη συλλογή της κυκλαδικής τέχνης του μουσεί-

ου. Λιτές κυκλαδικές γραμμές, πλούσια βλάστηση και αυθεντικές νησιωτικές γεύ-

σεις, είναι τα στοιχεία που αιφνιδιάζουν και κάνουν αυτό το conceptual καφέ τό-

σο γοητευτικό. Χωρίς αμφιβολία, το υποβλητικό αέρινο στέγαστρο-γλυπτό του

Στέλιου Κόη αποτελεί το σήμα κατατεθέν του χώρου. Οι διακριτικές φωτοσκι-

άσεις που δημιουργεί, σε συνδυασμό με το άπλετο φυσικό φως που διαχέεται

παντού, δημιουργούν μία αρμονική αίσθηση που δεν συναντάς σε άλλον χώρο

στο πολύβουο Κολωνάκι, αλλά και στο υπόλοιπο κέντρο της Αθήνας. Σ’ αυτό

το λιτό και φωτεινό καφέ, μπορείτε να πάρετε το πρωινό σας, ή να απολαύσετε

ένα καλομαγειρεμένο brunch, ή ένα μεσημεριανό γεύμα. Μη χάσετε τα μονα-

δικά αβγά ποσέ που σερβίρονται πάνω σε τραγανή τάρτα από ναξιώτικες πα-

τάτες και τρυφερό αχνιστό σπανάκι. Για ένα ελαφρύ lunch, ενδείκνυται το ψητό

φιλέτο μπακαλιάρου στη σχάρα, με σάλτσα από παρθένο ελαιόλαδο, λεμόνι και

νει αυτόν τον ενδιαφέροντα κατάλογο με το νησιωτικό άρωμα.

Όταν το «όχημα» είναι το επιβλητικό και, από κάθε άποψη, φωτεινό μουσείο

της Ακρόπολης, είναι δύσκολο να μην πετύχει η συνταγή. Βέβαια, το εστιατόριο

που βρίσκεται στον 2ο όροφο του εν λόγω μουσείου ξεπέρασε γρήγορα τις

προσδοκίες των περισσοτέρων και έγινε από μόνο του στέκι σοφιστικέ Αθη-

ναίων, επιχειρηματιών, τουριστών και μποέμ θαμώνων. Η θέα στην Ακρόπολη

και στους υπόλοιπους ιστορικούς λόφους της Αθήνας θα μπορούσε από μόνη

της να είναι ο λόγος για τον οποίο αγαπήθηκε τόσο πολύ αυτός ο χώρος. Όμως

υπάρχουν πολύ περισσότεροι… Ίσως να μπορούμε να αποδώσουμε αυτό το

ζωντανό κλίμα που αντικρίζουμε κάθε φορά εδώ στην ενέργεια των Καρυάτι-

δων: τουρίστες που συζητάνε ενθουσιασμένοι για τα εκθέματα, παρέες που εναλ-

λάσσονται δίνοντας παλμό, business κοινό ή απλώς υποψιασμένοι περαστικοί

που, διασχίζοντας τη Διονυσίου Αρεοπαγίτου, σκέφτηκαν να κάνουν μία στάση

για ένα απολαυστικό lunch. Όσο για το μενού, κερδίζει χάρη στο ελληνικό του

χρώμα και στις ντόπιες πρώτες ύλες, με ονομασία προέλευσης (ΠΟΠ). Η Σα-

ντορινιά φάβα που σερβίρεται με καππαρόφυλλα και το αυγοτάραχο Αιτωλικού,

είναι δύο πιάτα που αξίζει να δοκιμάσει κάποιος. Τις καθημερινές, από τη 1:00

μ.μ. μέχρι τις 04:00 μ.μ., καθώς γευματίζετε ή πίνετε τον καφέ σας, έχετε την ευ-

καιρία να ακούτε τις λυρικές μελωδίες ζωντανής άρπας. Όσο για τα βράδια των

Παρασκευών, τότε φιλοξενούνται γνωστοί μουσικοί της αθηναϊκής τζαζ σκηνής.

Υτη η Πόλη εινάι ΓόητεΥτιΚη όχι μό-

νο για τους φανερούς, αλλά και για τους κρυφούς θησαυρούς της. Σ’ αυτή την

κατηγορία ανήκει το Kasseta record Shop, ένα πολύ ιδιαίτερο και ενημερωμένο

δισκάδικο, που βρίσκεται κρυμμένο σε μία στοά στην οδό Σοφοκλέους 5, στο

κέντρο της Αθήνας. «Ο χώρος αυτός, από το 1961, ήταν ένα από τα πιο κλα-

σικά δισκάδικα της Αθήνας, το neodisc, άρα κουβαλάει χρόνια την κουλτούρα

του βινυλίου –και μόνον το παρελθόν του, επιβεβαιώνει τη μοναδικότητά του»,

θα πει ο Δημήτρης Κυβέλος, ο οποίος στον ιστορικό αυτό, για τη μουσική, χώ-

ρο άνοιξε το 2011 το Kasseta record Shop. Περνώντας έξω από το δισκάδικο

είναι αδύνατον να μην κοντοσταθείς και να μη νιώσεις το beat της μουσικής. Κα-

θώς μπαίνεις στον χώρο, ιδιαιτέρως αν τον επισκέπτεσαι για πρώτη φορά, είναι

αδύνατον να μη χαθείς για ώρες στις σπάνιες κυκλοφορίες από βινύλιο, ή στους

«ψαγμένους» δίσκους από ανεξάρτητα labels, ειδικά για τους φαν των ηλεκτρο-

νικών ήχων και της dance μουσικής. «Στο Kasseta, δύσκολα θα μπει περαστικός.

Θα έλεγα ότι έρχονται οι μυημένοι στον ήχο του μαγαζιού και οι συστημένοι

από αυτούς. Σπάνια θα μπει κάποιος που θα αρχίσει να ψάχνει τα ράφια, και αν

το κάνει αυτό, ίσως είναι η πρώτη φορά που έρχεται», ομολογεί ο ιδιοκτήτης. Η

συλλογή ανανεώνεται διαρκώς, με τους περισσότερους δίσκους να εξαφανίζο-

νται πριν καν προλάβει ο Δημήτρης να τους τοποθετήσει στα ράφια. Όσο για

τη μεγάλη αγάπη για τη δουλειά του, αυτή φαίνεται από το πώς μιλάει για το βι-

νύλιο: «Το βινύλιο για μένα εμπεριέχει αναμνήσεις και εποχές, ήχους που έχω

συνδέσει με σημαντικούς σταθμούς της ζωής μου, άρα φορτισμένους με συ-

ναισθήματα. Είναι ένα μέσο ακρόασης ήχου που παραμένει πεισματικά εκτός

τεχνολογικών εξελίξεων και πλάθει με τα χρόνια τον δικό του μύθο. Αυτό από

μόνο του το κάνει διαχρονικό».

ATHENS IS A FASCINATING CITY, AND NOT SIMPLY for the obvious rea-

sons, but for its hidden treasures. Kasseta record Shop, a very special and cur-

rent music store tucked away in an arcade at 5 Sofokleous Street in Athens, is

a prime example. “in 1961, this space was one of the most traditional record

shops in Athens, neodisc, and boasts years of vinyl culture. it’s past alone en-

sures its unique nature,” announced Dimitris Kyvelas in 2011, when he opened

Kasseta record Shop in the historic, from a musical perspective, space. When

walking by the shop, it is impossible to resist lingering a while to feel the beat

of the music. As visitors enter the space, particularly the first time, they inevi-

tably get lost for hours in rare vinyl releases and “refined” records from inde-

pendent labels for electronic and dance music fans. “Passers-by hardly ever

enter Kasseta. Our customers are well initiated to the sounds of the shop and

new ones are usually referred by them. rarely will someone start to search

the shelves, and if they do, it may be their first visit,” admits the owner. The

collection is continually replenished with more records, which tend to disap-

pear before Dimitris has the chance to place them on the shelves. And as for

his great love for his work, it is evident when he speaks of vinyl: “for me, vinyl

contains memoires and seasons, sounds i associate with major events in my

life that were emotionally charged. it’s a way to listen to music that stubbornly

remains outside technological developments and over time, vinyl has written

a myth of its own. This alone makes it timeless.”

Σχολή του Αριστοτέλειου Πανεπιστήμιου ως μηχανικός, συνέχισε τις σπου-

δές του, με μάστερ, στη Διοίκηση Επιχειρήσεων στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Βοστό-

νης, για να καταλήξει, έπειτα από αρκετά ταξίδια και το μικρόβιο του επιχειρείν,

να δημιουργήσει μία εταιρεία παραγωγής τηλεοπτικών προγραμμάτων και την

εβδομαδιαία ταξιδιωτική εκπομπή “World Party”, που καθηλώνει το κοινό στους

δέκτες της ελληνικής τηλεόρασης. Σύντροφος και συνοδοιπόρος του σε αυτή

τη μοναδική περιπέτεια, δεν είναι άλλος από τον καλό του φίλο Γιώργο Μαυρί-

δη, για τον οποίο, όπως δηλώνει ο Σάκης Τανιμανίδης, «Γεννηθήκαμε φίλοι!»

Ετοιμόλογος, ιδιαιτέρως κοινωνικός και με περίσσια ενέργεια, ο Σάκης Τανιμα-

νίδης αντιμετωπίζει τη ζωή σαν ένα ατελείωτο πάρτι, ενώ στο λεξιλόγιό του δεν

χωράει η λέξη «σύνορα». Από την Αλάσκα και τον Αμαζόνιο έως τη Μογγο-

λία και τη Νέα Γουινέα, οι εικόνες του κόσμου τον έκαναν να εκτιμάει την κάθε

στιγμή της ζωής, αλλά και να χαρακτηρίζει την Ελλάδα ως την πιο όμορφη χώ-

ρα του κόσμου, με διαφορά. «Η Ελλάδα είναι, κατά τη γνώμη μου, η μοναδική

χώρα που συνδυάζει με τέτοιο τρόπο και σε αυτόν τον βαθμό, τον μοναδικό

της πολιτισμό με το φυσικό κάλλος και την απαράμιλλη φιλοξενία». Αρνείται να

εγκαταλείψει την πατρίδα του και ας έχει ταξιδέψει σε κάθε γωνιά της Γης, γιατί,

όπως τονίζει, «ο λαός της Ελλάδας είναι το πιο δυνατό της χαρτί» –και γι' αυτό

σχεδιάζει το επόμενο επιχειρηματικό του βήμα με βάση τους νέους αυτής της

χώρας. Όνειρό του είναι η δημιουργία ενός Entrepreneurial hub, όπως συνη-

θίζεται να αποκαλείται διεθνώς, δηλαδή ενός κέντρου, όπου νέοι με φιλοδο-

ξίες, όνειρα και έντονη δημιουργικότητα, θα μοιράζονται τις επιχειρηματικές

τους ιδέες και θα τις υλοποιούν από κοινού. «Το ελληνικό έδαφος είναι πρό-

σφορο για καλλιέργεια και ανάπτυξη νέων επιχειρηματικών ιδεών. Οι νέοι αυ-

τού του τόπου έχουν αντικειμενικά πολύ υψηλό επίπεδο πανεπιστημιακής κα-

τάρτισης και όμως δεν κάνουν τα όνειρά τους πράξη, λόγω της καταπιεσμένης

δημιουργικότητας, επακόλουθο της κρίσης».

HE GrADUATED WITH A DEGrEE IN ENGINEErING from the Polytech-

nic faculty of Aristotle university, went on to earn his Masters in business Ad-

ministration at boston university, and after several trips and being bitten by the

business bug he eventually founded a TV production company and the “World

Party” weekly travel programme that has capitated Greek audiences. his part-

ner and companion on this remarkable adventure is none other than his good

friend George Mavridis. “We were born friends!” proclaims Sakis Tanimanidis.

Articulate, incredibly sociable and brimming with excess energy, Sakis Tani-

manidis treats life like an endless party, and the word “borders” has no place

in his vocabulary. from Alaska to the Amazon to Mongolia and new Guinea,

the images of the world made him appreciate every moment life has to offer,

and led him to conclude that Greece is, by far, the most beautiful country in

the world. “in my opinion, Greece is the only country to combine its unique

culture, natural beauty and unparalleled hospitality in such an extraordinary

way.” he refuses to abandon his home, despite having travelled to every cor-

ner of the earth, because, “The people of Greece are the ace up its sleeve,”

tionally, that is a centre where young people with aspirations, dreams and pro-

of new business ideas. The young people of our land possess a very high level

of academic training and yet are unable to realise their dreams due to the sup-

pression of creativity, a consequence of the economic crisis.”

ραδεχτεί ότι ανήκει στις Κυκλάδες. Aπό τη μία, λευκά σπιτάκια και από την άλλη,

περίτεχνα αρχοντικά, καταπράσινη ενδοχώρα, τρεχούμενα νερά, ακόμη και κα-

ταρράκτες που σε τίποτα δεν θυμίζουν τις Κυκλάδες. Σύμφωνα με τη μυθολογία,

πήρε το όνομά της από τον Άνδρο, ο οποίος έλκυε την καταγωγή του από τους

θεούς Απόλλωνα και Διόνυσο. Αποτελούσε σημαντικό κέντρο της ευρύτερης

περιοχής από την αρχαιότητα, ενώ από τον 19ο αιώνα και έπειτα, γνώρισε ιδι-

αίτερη ακμή. Αυτό οφείλεται σε μεγάλο βαθμό στους ντόπιους εφοπλιστές που

στήριξαν το νησί και συνεισέφεραν σημαντικά στην ανάπτυξή του. Γουλανδρής,

Εμπειρίκος και Πολέμης, είναι μερικά μόνο από τα ονόματα που κατάγονται από

την Άνδρο. Εκείνα τα χρόνια, απέκτησε και το προσωνύμιο «Μικρή Αγγλία».

Η Άνδρος θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί και ως νησί του πολιτισμού και της

τέχνης. Φωτεινά πνεύματα που διέπρεψαν στα γράμματα και στις τέχνες ήταν

Ανδριώτες, με κορυφαίο βέβαια τον ποιητή Ανδρέα Εμπειρίκο. Ξεχωριστή μορ-

φή ήταν και ο Θεόφιλος Καΐρης, ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους Έλληνες πνευ-

ματικούς του 19ου αιώνα. Όπως και ο Μιχάλης Δερτούζος, καθηγητής στο

ΜΙΤ των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών, που θεωρείται ο «πατέρας» της πληροφορικής.

Η ΜΑγευΤίκΗ χώρΑ

Η Χώρα της Άνδρου, χτισμένη στην ανατολική πλευρά του νησιού, αποτελεί

έναν παράδεισο πολιτισμού, με τη λιτή και σοφή της αρχιτεκτονική. Οι περίπα-

τοι στα πανέμορφα σοκάκια της Χώρας, με τα περίτεχνα καπετανόσπιτα, τους

περιποιημένους οικισμούς με τους περιστερώνες, τους νερόμυλους και τις βυ-

ζαντινές εκκλησίες, μεταφέρουν άμεσα την κοσμοπολίτικη αύρα στον επισκέπτη.

Εδώ, βρίσκεται το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο, αλλά και το πολύ σημαντικό Μου-

σείο Μοντέρνας Τέχνης. Το διεθνούς φήμης Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης του

Ιδρύματος Βασίλη και Ελίζας Γουλανδρή φιλοξενεί κάθε χρόνο μοναδικές εκθέ-

σεις ζωγραφικής και γλυπτικής. Εγκαινιάστηκε το 1979, με αφορμή την έκθεση

των έργων του Ανδριώτη γλύπτη Μιχάλη Τόμπρου. Στη συνέχεια, τα εκθέματα

εμπλουτίστηκαν με μέρος της συλλογής του Ιδρύματος, που αποτελείται από

περισσότερα από 300 έργα διακεκριμένων Ελλήνων και ξένων καλλιτεχνών. Το

πρώτο αυτό τμήμα του μουσείου αποτελεί σήμερα την Παλαιά Πτέρυγα και φι-

λοξενεί γλυπτά των Τόμπρου, Ζογγολόπουλου, Chryssa, Νικολαΐδη, Τάκη κ.ά.

Οι εκθέσεις σημαντικότατων καλλιτεχνών του αιώνα μας, που διοργανώνονται

ανελλιπώς από το 1986 μέχρι σήμερα, είναι σημείο αναφοράς στα πολιτιστικά

δρώμενα, καθιερώνοντας στον ελληνικό πολιτιστικό χάρτη, τόσο το μουσείο,

όσο και την Άνδρο. Στους χώρους του μουσείου έχουν φιλοξενηθεί, μεταξύ

άλλων, καλλιτέχνες όπως οι Πανιάρας, Picasso, Matisse, Καραγάτσης, Kandinsky,

Μπουζιάνης, balthus, Γαλάνης, Giacometti, Κlee, Chagall, De Chirico, rodin, Joan

Miro, Georges braque, Νίκος Χατζηκυριάκος Γκίκας, Σοφία Βάρη κ.ά.

Τα αρχαιολογικά μουσεία στη Χώρα και την Παλαιόπολη αποτυπώνουν την

πολυκύμαντη ιστορία του νησιού κατά τους αρχαίους χρόνους, χάρη στις πλού-

σιες συλλογές τους. Το Μουσείο Ελιάς Κυκλάδων, στο χωριό Πιτροφός, δίνει

την ευκαιρία στον επισκέπτη να δει από κοντά ένα τυπικό δείγμα μίας ελαιοπα-

ραγωγικής μονάδας προβιομηχανικής τεχνολογίας και να γνωρίσει τη λειτουρ-

γία μίας παραδοσιακής μορφής οικοτεχνίας.

ΤΟ ΑΠερΑνΤΟ γΑλΑΖίΟ

Οι παραλίες της Άνδρου ξεχωρίζουν τόσο για τα περίεργα ονόματά τους, όσο

ANDrOS STUBBOrNLY rEFUSES TO ADMIT IT BELONGS to the Cyclades.

On the one hand, white houses and on the other, ornate mansions, a verdant

inland, gurgling streams and even waterfalls –nothing that calls the Cyclades to

mind. According to legend, the island took its name from Andros, a descend-

ant of the gods Apollo and Dionysos. it has been an important region since an-

tiquity, and flourished from the 19th century onwards. This was largely due to

local ship owners who supported the island and made significant contributions

to its development. Goulandris, Empeirikos and Polemis are but a few of the

names originating from Andros. in those prosperous times the island acquired

the nickname “little England”.

Andros could also be termed an island of culture and art. bright spirits who

excelled at literature and art were from Andros, culminating in the great poet

Andreas Empeirikos. Theofilos Kairis, one of the most eminent Greek intellec-

tuals of the 19th century, was an extraordinary man, as was Michallis Dertou-

zos, who became a professor at MiT in the united States and is considered the

“father” of information technology.

MaGIcal cHora

Chora of Andros, which is built on the eastern side of the island, is a cultural

paradise, with its simple and wise architecture. Walks in the beautiful cobble-

stone alleyways of Chora, lined with ornate mansions owned by sea captains,

well-kept settlements with dovecotes, watermills and byzantine churches con-

vey its cosmopolitan aura to visitors.

The Archaeological Museum and the very important Museum of Modern

Art are both found there. The internationally acclaimed Museum of Contem-

porary Art, basil & Elise Goulandris foundation in Chora hosts unique paint-

ing and sculpture exhibitions each year. The Museum was inaugurated in 1979,

with an exhibition featuring work of local sculptor Michalis Tobros. The exhibits

were later enriched by part of the collection owned by the foundation, which

consists of over 300 works by distinguished Greek and foreign artists. This first

section of the museum is now the Old Wing and hosts sculptures by Tobros,

Zoggolopoulos, Chryssa, nikolaidis, Takis and others. Exhibitions of major art-

ists of the 20th century have been organised regularly since 1986 and are a

benchmark for cultural events, having firmly established the museum and An-

dros both in Greece and abroad. Works of artists like Paniaras, Picasso, Mat-

isse, Karagatsi, Kadinsky, bouzianis, balthus, Galanis, Giacometti, Klee, Chagall,

De Chirico, rodin, Joan Miro, Georges braque, nikos hadjikyriakos Gikas and

Sophia Vari have been hosted by the museum.

The rich collections of the archaeological museums in Chora and Palaeo-

polis illustrate the turbulent history of the island in ancient times. The Cyclades

Olive Museum in Pitrofos offers visitors the opportunity to observe a typical

example of pre-industrial revolution olive oil production, and to learn about

the operation of a traditional cottage industry.

tHe endless BlUe

The beaches of Andros stand out because of their odd names, turquoise wa-

ters and the surrounding landscape. There are many options for bathing on

Andros, while most organised beaches are located in the southeast section of

the island, near Gavrio and batsi. bays and impressive rock formations can be

και για τα γαλαζοπράσινα νερά και το τοπίο που τις περιβάλλει. Η Άνδρος έχει

πάρα πολλές παραλίες, με τις περισσότερες οργανωμένες να βρίσκονται στο

νοτιοανατολικό μέρος του νησιού, κοντά στο Γαύριο και το Μπατσί. Όρμοι και

εντυπωσιακοί βραχώδεις σχηματισμοί, όπως ο όρμος Καμπανού, ο όρμος της

Χώρας, του Βιταλίου, του Ζόρκου, και δεκάδες μικρά και μεγάλα ακρωτήρια,

εναλλάσσονται με κάτασπρες παραλίες με άμμο, όπως το Νημπορειό στη Χώ-

ρα, η Χρυσή Άμμος στο Κυπρί και η Άχλα, για να μιλήσουμε μόνο για τις πιο γνω-

στές. Πρόβλημα για τις περισσότερες παραλίες του νησιού αποτελούν οι άνε-

μοι, καθώς ακόμα και τους καλοκαιρινούς μήνες, πολλές φορές, οι βοριάδες θα

καταστήσουν κάποιες παραλίες «απαγορευτικές». Η πιο γνωστή παραλία της

Άνδρου ονομάζεται Της γριάς το πήδημα, με χαρακτηριστικό τον κάθετο βρά-

χο και τα καταπληκτικά νερά της. Ακόμη μία παραλία που αξίζει να επισκεφτεί-

τε, στο βόρειο κομμάτι, είναι η Γυάλια και η πίσω Γυάλια, στην οποία θα φθάσετε

κατεβαίνοντας 120 περίπου σκαλιά.

ΠρεΠεί νΑ ΔείΤε

Το σπήλαιο στο χωριό Αλαδινό, το οποίο έχει ηλικία 4,5-5 εκατομμυρίων ετών

και έκταση περίπου 500 τ.μ. Κρεμαστοί βράχοι, σταλακτίτες και σταλαγμίτες,

προσφέρουν ένα ξεχωριστό θέαμα. Επιπλέον, ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά μνη-

μεία της Χώρας είναι το Κάστρο της Άνδρου, αλλά μετά τον βομβαρδισμό από

τους Γερμανούς το 1943, σήμερα έχουν μείνει μόνο τα ερείπια.

Κάθε επίσκεψη στην Άνδρο γεννάει συναισθήματα και επιφυλάσσει εκπλήξεις.

Η κοσμοπολίτικη αύρα της, φυσική και αβίαστη, ορίζεται από το παρελθόν της,

χωρίς καθόλου να εκφυλίζεται από τις σύγχρονες πινελιές, με τις οποίες κατα-

φέρνει να συνυπάρχει αρμονικά.

found at Kampanou, Chora, Vitaliou, Zorkou, as well as dozens of small and

large headlands alternating with white sand beaches like nimborio in Chora,

Chrysi Ammos in Kypri and Achla, to mention only the most famous. The winds

are a problem for most beaches, even during the summer months when some

beaches are “prohibited” due to the strong gales. The best-known beach on

Andros is “Tis grias to pidima” (old woman’s leap), with its characteristic verti-

cal cliff and amazing waters. Another beach worth visiting in the north is Gialia

(and Piso Gialia), which is accessible by descending roughly 120 stairs.

“MUst-sees” on andros

The cave at the village of Aladino, which is approximately 4.5-5 million years old

and covers an area of 500 square metres is well worth a visit. hanging rocks,

stalactites and stalagmites present an extraordinary spectacle. Moreover, the

Castle of Andros is one of the most important monuments in Chora, but it is

in ruins after bombing by the Germans in 1943.

Every visit to Andros generates new emotions and surprises. its cosmopoli-

tan aura, natural and effortless, is a legacy from the past and remains impervi-

ous to the modern brushstrokes of the present day, with which it succeeds in

Το russian ballet Theater παρουσιάζει τη «Λίμνη των Κύκνων», τη συγκινητική

ιστορία αγάπης του κλασσικού χορού. Παρουσιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά στις

4 Μαρτίου του 1877 στο Θέατρο Μπολσόι και αποτελεί κορυφαία πρόκληση

στην καριέρα των χορευτών, αφού οι δεξιοτεχνικές ικανότητες και ο λυρισμός

που απαιτούνται για την ολοκληρωμένη ερμηνεία της είναι σχεδόν πέρα από

τα ανθρώπινα όρια. Παράλληλα, πρόκειται για ένα αυτόνομο μουσικό έργο, με-

τό, ένα από τα αρτιότερα της αρχαίας ελληνικής δραματουργίας, η θεματική της

σύγκρουσης μεταξύ των νόμων της ηθικής και των νόμων της πολιτείας φτά-

νει στην κορύφωσή της, με τους δύο ήρωες να επαληθεύουν την τραγική τους

haute couture met high gastronomy for the fourth consecutive year on friday 27 May at “taste the fashion in the wild”, an event brimming with glamour and… taste, in support of “eliZA – the society for the prevention of cruelty to children”. this year, christoforos peskias, stelios parliaros and kostas Athanasiou from the hilton Athens were inspired by the unique collections of 3 distinct international fashion brands by emilia wickstead, roksanda and vivienne westwood to create imaginative and original dishes.
