EDITORIAL Vocational Education is the stronghold of our future civilization, the mainstay of our future progress as a country, the bastion of our future well-being. It deserves to be treated as such and we intend to prove it. Despite the moat surrounding our castle, we fight our way out of our isolation; we reach out to the world and try to prove ourselves…….

TRAVEL By Andreas Kourakos and Ilias Kritikos

Mystras is a Byzantine city of castles, 5km north-west of Sparta. The present city of Mystras, is a community of 807 inhabitants in total: Sclaviki, Pikoulianika, Taygete and Vlachochori. On a slope of the mountain of Taygetus, there is the deserted byzantine city which was the capital of the byzantine and medieval area of Mystras. It is full of church and houses ruins, while most of the

palaces were built on a steep slope and they are very impressive. The place is of unique beauty and is worth walking. This high hill, with its monasteries and its churches, the deserted houses, the spiral paths and the natural beauties, leaves the traveller with unforgettable impressions. Mytzithras is mentioned as an older name of the city, which was probably the name of some owner of the area. During two centuries, this city was very important and its ruins are a remarkable source of Byzantium’s history and civilization. The history of Mystras begins in the middle of the 13th century, when Franks dominated the Peloponnese. In 1249, "Vellarduinus the second" (Frank lord of Morea) had built a fortress (castle) on the top of

a steep mountain named Mystras or Mytzithras. Ten years later (1259), Vellarduinus was captured by Byzantium’s emperor Michael Paleologos and he ransomed his freedom by offering the castles of Monemvassia, Mystra and Maini (Mani). Since 1262, the castle of Mystra became the base of a Byzantine general who had annual service. The inhabitants of the neighbouring Lacedaemona (Sparta), began building their homes on the slope of Mystra, in order to be secure. The area was protected by walls, but as the number of the houses increased, new walls were built in order to enclose the new group of houses. The first one was named "Chora" and the second one "Kato Chora". At that time the cathedral, which was in Lacedaemona, was transferred there. Since 1308, generals almost always were permanent commanders. The area unfolded to a remarkable city and Mystras became the capital of the Peloponnese with permanent lord who had the title of "despot", so the "despotato of Morea" was created . The history of this despotato is a continuous fight against foreign invaders: Slavs, Franks, Albanians, Turks et. al. It is also a characteristic example of the bloom of the byzantine civilisation just before Byzantium’s total submission to the Turks. First despot of Morea was Emanuel (1348-1380),the second-born son of the Byzantine emperor "John Katakousinos the 6th". He was the founder of the despotato`s prosperity as well as the leader of its blooming related to art. After his death, Matthew became despote (1380-1383) and then Demetrius (1383-1384). Then "Theodor Paleologos the first"(1383-1407) took the authority, son of the Byzantium’s emperor John Paleologos. In the days of Paleologos` rule, Mystras dominated almost all over the Peloponnese. Later, in 1400, George Gemistos or else Plithon founded a philosophic school. This school was very important for the spiritual life of the city. "Theodoros the first", who at the end of his life became a monk, was succeeded by his nephew "Theodor the second" (1407-1443), second-born son of the emperor "Emanuel the second". His younger brother, Constantine Paleologe (1443-1449), was his successor. Emperor "John the 8th" died in 1448 and Constantine was proclaimed emperor one year later in the cathedral of Mystra, and left for Constantinople. Demetrius successed him as despot of Mystra, but he was an incapable lord who surrendered the castle to the Turks without even fight (1460). Mystras began to decline in the years of the Turkish rule, although it continued to have over 40 thousand of inhabitants and a flourishing trade. In 1821 Mystras took part in the Revolution, which ended in the ruin of the city by the Turk Ibrahim. The area was abandoned. Some inhabitants built houses in the area of present Sparta and others in present Mystra. In this way, Mystras fell into ruins. Today it is one of the most interesting archaeological places in Greece.

HOW TO MAKE A HOT – AIR BALLOON

By class A4 with the guidance of Stefanos Janeteas, Stefanos Stathakos and Kostas Sgourdas Photographs taken by Stefanos Janeteas

MATERIALS AND TOOLS THAT YOU NEED:

50 sheets of rice paper (1x0,60m) Liquid glue 2 canes Wire A rag A wide stapler A pair of scissors

First, we take the sheets of rice paper and stick them together to make a square or a rectangular. We need 8 sheets of rice paper by length and 6 by height. Then we fold the paper to make a cylinder and we stick the two sides. After that, we cut off the two sides of the cylinder to make a rocket-like shape. We scrape the canes, split them open in half, bend them into a band and tie them together using wire. But be careful!!! We mustn’t scrape the canes too thin because they may break!! Also, we make sure that the cylinder can fit into the band!! Using the wire , we form a cross inside the band and put a hook hanging from the middle of the cross where the two wires meet. We staple the paper cylinder on the band. We sprinkle the rag with gasoline. We light a fire and hold the

balloon above it to so as to heat it. When the rice paper feels really hot, we hang the rag on the hook, lower it and set it on fire! We countdown from 10 to 0 and let the balloon go!! But the best part is…… ……..when you take your bike and run after it! Don’t let a stranger catch it !!! It is serious cause for a fight!!! ATTENTION!!! DO NOT ATTEMPT IT IN THE SUMMER!! You are running the risk of setting fire to the whole of Laconia!!! IN SHORT…..

1. Stick the sheets of paper 2. Fold to make a cylinder 3. Cut off the two sides 4. Split and scrape the canes 5. Bend into a band and tie together 6. Fit into the cylinder 7. Form a cross with wire with a hook in the

middle 8. Sprinkle the rag with gasoline 9. Heat the balloon 10. Set fire to the rag 11. Countdown from 10 to 0 and let it go!!

STRATEGIC…..

In Thermopiles, the allied Greek nations deployed a small force of between four and seven thousand heavy infantry soldiers against the invading Persian army of two million. Leading the Greek, was a force of three hundred Spartans, all fathers of male children, who would preserve their bloodlines after what was to be a deadly fight. Thermopiles was the only entrance into Greece for the Persian army – a narrow pass bordered by a sheer mountain wall on one side and a cliff drop-off to the sea on the other. The location decreased the advantage of the Persians numerical superiority and gave the Greek allies enough time to prepare a larger main force to defend against the Persian threat.

Greek people have the custom to fast during Megali Sarakosti to mime the fasting of Jesus Christ in the desert, a custom as old as the hills…..Sarakosti is the period between Ash Monday and the Resurrection of Christ. It is a period of preparation for our body and soul, to welcome the celebration of celebrations, the Easter.

FASTING IN MEGALI SARAKOSTI

Our diet changes during this period. Meat and dairy products are not included. Instead we eat vegetables , sea food and fresh fruit.

Sarakosti is a long lasting period for the people who fast, especially towards its end. So, people fasting used to have a calendar to count the days to its end. They would draw Sarakosti as a nun without a mouth to represent the fasting period. Her arms were crossed and had seven legs, one for every week of Sarakosti. They would cut off a leg every Saturday.

Many customs and traditions were a way of life for Greek people and we have tried to preserve them by transferring them from generation……

For those who love action and romance my opinion is that "Twilight" is one of the best options you may have when you go to the cinema, I watched it and it's unexpectedly good.

MOVIE REVIEW

For those who love jokes and funny movies “Superhero” is a very good option , I don't know about you but I laughed so much with that movie.

If you are one of those who like the movie to be creepy and have much action, never choose to rent "T.B.K" (treasure bind kill), it is the worse thriller I have ever watched. A good option is "Alliance Of Darkness" .

And last but not least, for those who love action and racing movies best option is "Death Race". It has so much action and some very famous actors.

Music is the best hobby almost everybody has, people like different types of music and different singers or bands. This has to do especially with the style, the nation, the age etc.

MUSIC REVIEW

I can say that Hip-Hop, R&B ,Rap ,Rock and metal (hard, nu ,death etc) are the most famous music types, for me all of them are good.

Rumors say that EMINEM (one of the most famous rappers in the world) died....some say from drug overdose, some that he committed suicide and some that he died in a car accident. None of these are true. The truth is that he has a daughter and he needs some quality time with her.

I guess that all of you know Evanescence and the famous song "Bring Me To Life" which is not the only famous and great song this band have. Amy Lee with her band made it to the top and they are one of the most famous rock band of 2009.

JAY-j is the second richest rapper in the world. He was featured with famous bands and singers , some of them are Liking Park , Riana , Madonna ,50 cent , Eminem and others. He wrote many great hits in the last 3-4 years and I hope he will continue this great work.

As we all know, food plays an important role in our lives. Who hasn't tried a "pita giros" or a burger? I bet that you all have , so I’ll tell you some of my experiences about some famous restaurants and fast-food spots of Sparta.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Goodies is a good fast food restaurant I can say that I like this type of food, it's too bad that is not as busy as it should be . It's in the central square and you have many options like Vegetarian menu or Chicken Burger etc.Maybe people in Sparta don't like fast-foods or they prefer to eat in grills and restaurants.

My Suggestion : Try something before you reject it especially when it comes to food.

BOOK REVIEW It’s not very common for Greeks to be book lovers or book eaters especially in the

last decade. Very few people are into reading books, they are usually teenagers and they prefer science-fiction books like Hurry Potter or The Lord Of The Rings.

The only thing that I can say about these two is that they where bestseller books as well as box-office hits.

• In 1941 the German mechanic Conrad Zuse made Z3 which was useful in making the design of rockets and fighting jets.

FIRST GENERATION COMPUTERS

In 1906 Li De Forese Clee De Forest made a important discovery. He used ATAPOSOFF AND BETTY to create the first computer named ABC in 1934.

The ABC remains useless because of the work of other scientists. After World War II plenty of governments who participated in this war realized its strategic use.

• In 1943 Great Britain made Colossus, to steal the messages that Germans were sending with radio signals. The construction of Colossus was secret even some years after the war.

• In 1948 Howard Aiken in the U.S.A co-operated with IBM making MARK-1 which was as big as half a football stadium and the wires used were more than 1400 miles long. Mark-1 was not fast , it took 3 to 5 seconds to make a calculation but could do much more difficult ones than humans can and faster.

• U.S.A government co-operated with Pennsylvania's college, leaders of the project were Eckert, Mauchly and Goldstein and they made E N I A C in 1945. To make ENIAC work they used 18.000 lamps, but it was 1.000 times faster than MARK-1.

Successful attempts of making a computer was EDVAC 1946 and UNIVAC 1951, whose technology seems now old but they were using magnetic drums as contemporary computers do.

The most important thing about 1st generation computers is that they were so big because of the number of lamps they needed to work.

The color that is on top of fashion is purple (clothes or shoes or accessories)! Of course the shoes All Star and Vans too…

Boy’s look: Girls, when you adopt the

men’s style of wear you don’t need to wear the representation accessories (large jeans, white shirt) with that only one is enough. The experts insist to ‘break’ the total with the female details (coat with deep and impressive color, pumps with biretta, hair stiff pony tail, make up, and manicure) for one well-balanced result!!!

TIPS The small scarves or ties on your neck are not only accessories but a fashion statement!!!

HOT FASHION trend

• All……white! White, beige and ecru in total and the accessories. White skirt with white bag. Very cool.

• White and black! A combination that is always trendy and easy. Especially the black with loll designs.

• Your All Star with a drawing is more

fashion than any other. Try to draw on them and then you’ll see that they are SUPER!

• In Fashion is to wear torn jeans jackets and shoes. • Also you must try to do something that no one else does ! Do

everything you want on your clothes. Don’t think that some may criticize your style. Be your self!

FIGHTING ALONE A mercenary inside the castle of the knights

I am defending myself.

I am defending myself against nothing specific.

The images of other times and my childhood dreams being my tour guide

I penetrate the oxidation and make my way to the nucleus.

And all of a sudden, I pleasantly discover that I’m not a mercenary.

I discover that I am fighting in defense of my own things.

I keep fighting even though I am alone.

THE CALL OF THE WILD By Vasilis Nikoloulias

In 1896, some men found gold in Klondike in the north of Canada. The winter was very cold that year. The land was under snow and ice but thousands went there to try and find gold. Everything was taken to Klondike on sledges in winter. Teams of strong dogs pulled the sledges across the snow and ice. But the men who drove the sledges needed more dogs. ……..

LOVE BY DESIGN

By Yioulia Skliarouk The book says that it is winter and it is raining. Tom is bored

at school and goes to work. He started working in the library and he hates it! He wants to be an artist and a photographer but he failed his exams so he can’t go to an Art College. One day when he is in the library the door opens and a girl walks in. A beautiful girl in red coat. She smiles at him and Tom falls in love. In the end, the author does not reveal if they get married or if they remain good friends…..

THE GRAPES OF WRATH

By Jennie Rapatsoulea In the 1930’s, very little rain fell in the central states of the

USA. The poor soil broke up and turned to dust. Then the strong winds blew away the dust and the soil disappeared. Families are forced to leave their farms to find work picking fruit in California. But the farmers in California cannot pay the people who have come to pick the fruit. In the souls of people , the grapes of wrath were ripening. The people were about to harvest anger and destruction…….

BLACK BEAUTY

By George Christakos This is the story of a horse called ‘Black Beauty’. It used to

live in a farm with its mother, but they didn’t work in the farm. They pulled carriages or carried ladies and gentlemen on their backs. Black Beauty was a fine horse so his boss was very pleased with him. One November night he saved the people on the carriage because he didn’t go across a wooden bridge that was broken. In December, Black Beauty went on a long trip and had to spend the night in a stable. Afire broke out but all the horses came out safe. Not long after that, his boss got sick and left with his family to the south of France to rest. So Black Beauty was given to Lady Westland who wanted to be in fashion so she used reins. One night there was an accident when the horse was whipped and stepped on its driver who died. The horse changed then many bosses, others were good and others were bad. In the end , it found happiness in a farm where his groom was an old acquaintance……..

She sent her to Lowood Sch ool where Jane was very happy and stayed there for eight years. Her teacher, Mrs. Temple, helped her to learn French, drawing and playing the piano. Jane went to work in Thornfield Hall as a teacher to a little girl, Apele. It was a big house with many gardens. Apele’s father, Mr. Rochester, asked Jane to marry him. Two days before the wedding, a mad woman came into her room, put on her wedding dress and veil and then tore them in two. On their wedding day, a lawyer, Mr. Briggs, said that they couldn’t get married because Mr. Rochester was already married. Jane left the house and nearly died but she was saved by a priest and his sisters. With his help she found her family and discovered that she was very rich. They got married and lived happily ever after!!

By Kostas Georgakopoulos The story is about a little boy. His name is George and he is eight years old. He lives with his family in Chicago. He has two older sisters. George is very lively and he likes to annoy everyone. His parents and his sister Betty don’t like him very much. Only his sister Mary loves and understands him. If he did something bad his father would lock him in his room. After an accident, his parents sent him to his aunt Sandy in Los Angeles. At the train station three boys attacked and mugged him. Three days later his sister called his aunt and asked her to send George back home because his mother wanted to send him to a school in Austria. His only company there was his diary where he wrote all the things that he did. One day the Headmistress of the school left George in class at night as a punishment for fighting with another boy. It was dark and he was very cold. In his effort to light a fire, it spread in the whole class. His mother came and took him back home and George said how sorry he was for everything he had done…..They lived as one happy family………

After Gythio’s UFO ,a monkey from Vahou came foreword and has gained public attention……

A strange situation came out these days at Vahou in Itilo. As

Petros Kapenarakos from Vaho t old us, for some days now an animal goes to Mr. Kapernarakos’ garden during the night hours and eats some of his vegetables and it also plays with his pets provided that it is very quiet. As he described it to us, this animal looks like either a chimpanzee or a monkey from Malaysia, even though he has never seen it in daytime. As he told us: “ I see a black mass in the dark which looks like a monkey. I can distinguish its tail, its head, little things like that… I haven’t seen it in daytime so I don’t know what exactly it is.”

When he perceived the animal, as he told us, he called Aegina’s

animal care center and other loving animals’ organizations so that they would act accordingly, but he didn’t forget to give interviews in many TV shows, because this animal “ is a jewel for the nature and for our town which has been burnt twice “ while he mentio ned that “ I went on TV and said that, anyone who owns it, anyone who left it … and knows if its health is ok, please call to give more information, I don’t

allow anyone to come in, this area is being guarded by armed friends of mine and I don’t allow anyone until the animal be tamed down, as the manager of Aegina’s center told me either to approach us or do anything”.

When we asked Mr. Kapernarako if he had taken pictures with it

he told us that his camera can’t take pictures in the dark. When we asked Mr. Kapernarako if we could go with special cameras to take pictures from it he told us “ I won’t allow you to com e in”, and after a while he told us that we had to pay to go there. Also, with a view to persuade us that the animal exists, he told us “ come and see my vegetables which have been eaten by it”. He also emphasized “ I don’t want to take any credit for this event and the only reason for this interview is for increasing tourism”. IT’ S CLEARLY A MONKEY BUSINESS………..

WEIRD AND OFF-BEAT
