Vinyl Acetate can be polymerized to form resins with exceptional bonding qualities for wood, glass, metal and fibre.
Vinyl Acetate can be used for synthesis of a-b-di-chloroethyl acetate, b-monochlor ethyl acetate, b-chloro acetals, 2-amino-thiazole, chloroacetalde-hyde and many others.

Close control of low-temperature processing is said to have been made possible by a low-range radiation pyrometer developed by the Brown Instrument Co., Philadelphia 44, Pa. Especially useful where the measuring instrument does not or can not come into contact with materials or processing equipment, it is recommended for dairy and other food fields.
Comparative sise of pyrometer parts Tests were carried out in rubber and plastic mills and in continuous curing ovens and paint pigment kilns.
The pyrometer includes a low-range radiation-sensitive head designed for optimum operation a t temperatures under 1,000 ° F. ; a control box which controls the temperature of the head, and the reference junction of the temperature of the thermopile, at approximately 120° F.; and an electronic recorder, with control features if desired. The system is claimed to respond to temperature changes of 1 ° or 2° F . within the span of ambient temperature to 212° F. I t is offered as an uncalibrated unit only.
Steam-Jacketed Flow Meter
The Fischer <fc Porter Co., Hatboro, Pa., announces a steam jacketed Flow-rator instrument for materials having high melting points such as molten sulfur, naphthalene, and phosphorus. Remote totalization, recording, and control of the flow rate is available. Flow indication is also provided at the primary element. The indicating extension is furnished with steam heating coils and the entire meter body is jacketed for 100 p.s.i. steam gage pressure to ensure that the material metered remains in the liquid phase in all parts of the instrument.
Heating and Cooling System,
Regular production has begun on portable units of a self-contained Dow therm heating and cooling system a t Blaw-Enox Co., Blawnox, Pa. The system consists of one 100,000-B.t.u. per hour electrovapor generator; one 100-gal. surge tank; one 50-square foot cooler; one cooling pump for circulation of the liquid Dowtherm; one complete charge of Dowtherm "A."
heat transfer fluid; and the instrumentation and framework including the control panel.
During the heating cycle, the Dowtherm fluid is vaporized by the action of a 30-kw. electric immersion heater with an explosion resistant terminal cover. Design working pressure for the vapor generator i s 60 p.s.i. During cooling liquid Dowtherm is withdrawn from the surge tank, forced by the cooling pump through the cooler, then through the customer's piping arrangement and vessel, jacket, or coil, and then back to the upper inlet fit-. ting of the surge tank. The surge tank has capacity adequate to contain all of the Dowtherm fluid, thereby permitting removal of fluid from other vessels for purposes of inspection.
Alloy Scales J or Quantometer
Applied Research Laboratories, 4336 San Fernando Rd., Glendale, Calif., have developed a recording system to be applied to their direct-reading instrument for
speetrochemical analysis, the Quantom-etcr. The system, which employs removable plastic panels fitted with direct-reading scales for each element being determined, allows panels to be made up for each type of alloy. The instrument can be set up for the analysis of any alloy of a certain base metal in a few minutes.
Calorimeter Evaluations of color differences can be
made rapidly and precisely by means of its photoelectric tristimulus colorimeter which measures color on three scales, Henry A. Gardner Laboratory, Inc., 4723 Elm. St., Bethesda 14, Md., states. Photocell windows and measuring circuits have been selected so that the three values of color are read directly from 10-turn potentiometer rheostats. These three rheostats may be set to the values of some standard color and a specimen of similar color then placed in exposure position. As a selector switch is turned to each of three positions, deflection of the current-deflecting galvanometer shows the magni-

Bloom Gelometer An instrument for determining the jelly
strength of glue is being manufactured by the Precision Scientific Co., Chicago 47, 111. Originally developed for determining the the jelly strength of food products, it has also been found applicable to the routine testing of certain paints. The principle of operation is the lowering of a plunger a pre
determined distance (usually 4 mm.) into the jelly. The force applied to the plunger to drive it against the resistance of the jelly, a direct measure of the jelly strength of the material, is reported in grams.
Moisture Indicator To widen the range of usefulness of its
moisture tellers, the Harry W. Dietert Co., Detroit 4, Mich., has developed a model for light bulky materials. I t is equipped with a 12-inch-deep sample pan which will accommodate large samples of wool, fibers, cloth, and similar materials. Special construction of the pan prevents excessive heat loss and measures uniform temperatures throughout the sample.
Samples of wool fiber of 300 grams weight are said to be dried in 15 minutes without damage. The temperature is controlled by means of a thermostat in the range of 125° to 300° F .
Chemical Motor A gear motor and a corrosion-resisting
chemical motor, developed to meet difficult machinery-drive problems, are being produced in a joint, cooperative endeavor by the Reliance Electric & Engineering Co., Cleveland 10, Ohio, and Philadelphia Gear Works, Inc., Philadelphia 34, Pa. Both companies will sell the finished product.
Sampling Bottle Cage A sampling cage which will hold a 32-
ounce sampling bottle and can be used for obtaining spot or running samples through an opening of 47/8 inches or larger was designed by Vapor Recovery Systems Co., 2820 North Alameda St., Compton, Calif., for use with its gastight gaging and sampling unit on low-pressure vessels in lieu of a pressure-type sampling bomb. Operation consists of lowering the cage to the desired level and uncorking the bottle by means of the tape or chain.
