STANDIKC has prepared a book well suited to the needs of the young engineer or technologist who is anxious to utilize his academic knowledge in aiding solu- tion of problems of the petroleum and natural gas industry. Although much scientific infonnation has been uncovered in the past 20 years pertaining to efficient production of hydrocarbons from high- pressure reservoirs, technical needs have not been fulfilled, and the trade literature contains a slightly perplexing variety of suggestions for bridging some of the gaps. With a backgrounnd of both academic and industrial experience, Dr. Standing has presented a selection of methods for utilizing available infonnation to the best advantage in solving many engineering problems. Examples of representative solutions have been carefully illustrated with step-by-step instructions, and indi- cation is given occasionally of the un- certainty involved in approximations that may be necessary. Although information on phase behavior of natural hydrocarbon systems is pre- sented under the categories: gases, con- densate systems, and dissolved gas sys- tems, the divisions of the book could have been made on the basis of sampling, P-V-T relationships, vapor-liquid equilib- ria calculations, and material balance concepts with about equal advantage to many readers. Considering the present state of the literature, the section on vapor-liquid equilibria should be espe- cially helpful to those who have occasion to calculate phase relationships for pres- sures exceeding 1000 pounds per square inch. The concept of "convergence pres- sure" gradually developed through the years for extrapolating reliable values of "equilibrium constants" to values that are applicable at pressures approaching the dew- and bubble-point pressures of hy- drocarbon systems is presented in helpful detail by means of charts and problem ex- amples. The reader with experience in the field covered by the book may not fully agree with Dr. Standing in all of his conclu- sions but wall be inclined to believe that the author would be one of the first to modify his procedures and conclusions when substantially, better information be- came available. XHE descriptive style of this book is what one might expect of a small encyclopedia. The entries vary from a line to several pages. There are few tables, and line drawings are used sparingly. .Among the entries are found, besides the elements and a selection of compounds, trade names of all sorts, phenomena, apparatus, minerals, noted chemists, chemical firms, Latin terms, and abbreviations. Litera- ture citations, especially of books, are given in many cases, also the names of the makers of chemical products. Foreign countries are well represented. At "Chemie-Verlage" is a list of chemical publishers, with their addresses; "Chem- iserie Untersuchungs- u. (Continued from page 835) possible multiple-year subscriptions and a "start any time** plan for nonmembers.

The· new plan is not free of difficulties. The -uniformity of expiration date has simplified our system of maintaining records, "billing, reporting circulation, maintaining mailing stencils, and making cutoffs f o r nonpayment. This has been reflected in financial savings and in publishing costs less than normal. Such benefits must riot l>e given u p without expectation of others o f even greater value.

Attention has been directed to the possibility of sending journals for which subscriptions were entered at a rate less than the current one. This is less serious than it appears at first. Wi th rates set in the spring for the following year, the loss on subscriptions entered to begin at times other than Jan. 1 would be a few months at most. For multiple-year subscriptions, the maximum period of discrepancy would be o n e year.

Careful study has been made. The changes are advantageous to the subscriber. Trie benefits expected for the ACS seem to outweigh the drawbacks. Cer-tainly, the plan merits a careful trial.
