He was an adulterer, an alcoholic, and had never been a member of a church in his life. But when he went down to place member- ship, he gave public testimony to the church that there was no sin in his life, and that he had grown up in the church, and they readily ac- cepted him as a member. When he went home he told his wife what he had done, and his wife, a very godly lady, exploded. She condemned him for being a hypocrite, and demanded that he go back to the church the next week and confess what he really was. Well, God used his wife to really break him, and he took it to heart. The next Sunday he went back to church, walked down to the front again, and this time confessed to the church all his sins. He told them that he was dishonest, and alcoholic, an adulterer, and that he was truly sorry. After all that, the people of the church revoked his membership on the spot. He walked out of the church that day scratching his head and muttered to himself: “These church folks are really strange. I told a lie and they took me in; and when I told the truth they kicked me out.” Sometimes, I ask myself the same question? Why couldn’t this man after all he went through in life, come up to the plate and tell his story the way it happened the first time. Be- cause we live in a Society, that can’t accept the truth. We live in a story book society where everything is perfect, because that’s what we want “TO LIVE IN A PERFECT WORLD, OR A MAKE BELIEVE WORLD.” Everybody sees life the way they want to see it. Since you are reading this article, let me ask you some questions: Do you always tell the truth at all times? Don’t we all have a skeleton in our closets? Don’t we all want to forget the past and walk away from it? Do you ever look at people who don’t go to church, and think you are bet- ter than they are because you go to church? Because of your position and status, do you look down on other people, thinking that you are better than them? Do you ever look at people who are divorced, and think that you are better than they are because you are not? I promise you, everyone one of you will find yourself somewhere in this story, because at one time or another, all of us are quilty of trying to impress God. The message that God gives us today is that He offers us a new life and a new beginning. But to reach that point we need to look at ourselves and re-evaluate what we have done wrong in the past and correct it. Throughout history we have plenty examples of the great leaders of the church who lived their lives in sinfullness. We all know the story of St. Paul, what he was before he walked away from his Always remem- ber, “God’s Way is not always Man’s Way ......”.

Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos

sinful past. He persecuted and killed Christians. But as soonhe accepted Christ, he became the greatest apostle of thechurch. If we look at Noah, Abraham, & Moses, all three ofthem walked away from their past. And what did they be-come, the Giants of the faith.

If your life is filled with the examples I gave above thenyou need to change your lifestyle. If your decision that youare presently making does not require any faith at all, youare not walking towards God. The answer to this story is tofind God, but how do we do this when this world is filledwith hatred, jealousy, and bitterness.

People today crave for new things. New phones, newcars, homes, clothing, and etc. We are in an economicressession because of our wants and needs. We try to putthe blame on others, but in reality we play a major role inthe destruction of our economy. It’s about time that wetake full responsibility for our actions. So, the key wordhere is “CHANGE’’. The question is “CAN WECHANGE?’’

The answer is “YES WE CAN’’. I am not taking a po-litical stand here in repeating the words that some politi-cians use for their own personal gains. When I say that“WE CAN’’ I really mean it. When you have faith, you canconquer anything that you put your mind to do. I have al-ways believed in the three positive words, “MIND OVERMATTER’’. The first thing we should all learn from this isthat it isn’t important how we see ourselves, but only how

God sees us. We don’t have to boast, or show off our faithto people, let God be the Judge. Just remember the Parableof the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, that should give youthe insight of what impresses God.

Man has made great improvements over the Centuries. We have learned so much in just a short time. We havemade great strides in education, science, technology andetc. Yet life has not been better. Life is made easy but notbetter. We live with the same worries and fears, we worryabout not having enough, when there are people in theworld who barely receives a piece of bread to eat every-day.

We fear being diagnosed with cancer of some kind; wehave relationship problems, at school, at home, at work, even among our close friends. We have more broken fami-lies today than ever before. We have a growing number ofsuicides and divorces, and violence is on the rise not on adownfall. I ask you this question? Has life really improved, even though we have great technology. Why? Because manhas fallen away from God. Remember this, If you trulywant a good life—— get back with Christ. This is the an-swer to all our problems. We are so blinded by the examplesof the world that we can’t see infront of us what our desti-nation will be. At this moment, most of us are heading inthe wrong direction. We are not guiding our children in theways of the Lord. We are heading towards a spiritualdissaster.

Always remember, “God’s Way is not always“Man’s Way......”.

This article is PART II of the Pilgrimage to the Holy Landarticle which appeared in the September, 2010 issue of theKOINONIA. We hope you take the time to read this beau-tiful adventure and become inspired and moved by thesights visited by Fr. Michael and the members who accom-panied him on this journey back to their Christian roots.

Day 3 Saturday—Our day began at the Praetorium wherewe stood in the same prison cell that Jesus was detained. As Fr.Michael read the Gospel verses of His Passion, we were takenback to the night when Jesus was betrayed and arrested. Onceoutside, we walked along the Via Dolorosa, the road Jesuswalked to his Crucifixion. We then rode on to the remains ofthe Pool of Bethesda where Jesus healed the paralytic. Closeby we visited the Church of St. Anne which houses the sitewhere the Virgin Mary was born. We traveled on to Jericho, the oldest city of the world, existing for 10,000 years. Here wesaw the sycamore tree of Zacchaeus and visited the Monasteryof the Profit Elisha (Elisseos). Later we were lifted by cable carand then continued up on foot to the Mount of TemptationMonastery (Sarantarion) where Jesus was tempted by Satan for40 days. Our last stop of the day was the Dead Sea, the lowestpoint of the world. Few members of the group took a swim inthe salty waters where the excessive salinity allowed them tofloat effortlessly.Later that evening we proceeded to the Church of the Holy Sep-ulcher for midnight Divine Liturgy. Arriving early, we took ourplace in line to worship at the Tomb of Christ. Upon entering,we saw the Stone that sealed the Tomb; the actual Tomb wasfurther into the Sepulcher. Soon the Liturgy began, and Fr.Michael was given the honor to chant during the 4-hour longservice. At his urging we received Holy Communion at the sitewhere our Lord was buried and resurrected.

Day 4 Sunday—We left very early in the morning for thelong 6-hour journey through Israel to the Sinai Peninsula. Dur-ing the drive we saw the column of salt known as Lot’s wife,Masada, and Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. When we reached the Israeli-Egyptian border, we were greetedby another guide, Mustafa, who stayed with us while in Egypt. As we continued south through the peninsula, we were awed bythe natural beauty of the area. Nestled in the desert betweentwo red granite mountains is the Monastery of St. Catherine. The monastery was founded in 527 B.C. by Byzantine EmperorJustinian and was built on the site of an earlier chapel built in

337 A.D. by St. Helen. We were welcomed by the Geronda whogave us a brief tour of the monastery, showing us the BurningBush and Jethro’s well where Moses met his wife Zipporah.

Day 5 Monday—While most of group was sleeping, fivebrave members of our group gathered at 1:30 a.m. to climb Mt.Sinai. The remaining members attended sunrise Divine Liturgyin the Basilica of the Transfiguration within the Monastery. Af-ter the services, we were invited to venerate the holy relics ofSt. Catherine and given a silver ring in remembrance of St.Catherine who dreamed of receiving a ring from Jesus. Whenshe awoke, St. Catherine found a ring on her finger! We alsovisited the monastery’s world renowned museum. After greet-ing the exhilarated Mt. Sinai climbers, the group departed forthe return trip to Israel. We were reunited with our guide Raedwho took us to a mall in Eilat to enjoy a meal at McDonald’s!We continued on to Mt. Tabor to visit the Church of the Trans-figuration. From there we could see the Valley of Armageddonwhere the Book of Revelation tells us the last battle betweengood and evil will take place. We then checked into our hotelin Tiberias where some members of the group took an eveningswim in the pool.

Day 6 Tuesday—Our first stop of the day was the Monas-tery of St. Gerasimos Iordanitis, which is one of the oldest mon-asteries in the world founded in 455 A.D. It is said that the Vir-gin Mary, Joseph and Jesus rested there during their flight toEgypt. St. Gerasimos is known for removing a thorn from thepaw of a lion which became his lifelong companion. Upon thedeath of St. Gerasimos, the lion stayed by his side until its owndeath. Moving on to Nazareth, we visited the Church of theAnnunciation. We also visited the house of Joseph where hewas told by the Angel to take the Virgin Mary as his wife andwhere Jesus lived the first 30 years of his life. That evening wehad the pleasure of meeting Raed’s mother, brother Fr.Theodosios and his Presbytera.

Day 7 Wednesday—The day began with a scenic boat rideon the Sea of Galilee. The boat crew honored us by flying theAmerican flag and playing the American and Greek national an-thems. Upon landing at Tabgha, we visited the pastoral settingof the Mountain of the Beatitudes where Jesus preached the Ser-mon on the Mount. We travelled further to visit the Church ofthe Multiplication of the Fishes and Loaves (Heptaghion).Capernaum was our next stop where Jesus performed many ofHis miracles. There we saw the house where Jesus healedPeter’s mother-in-law and the synagogue where He taught regu-larly. Then we went on to Yardenit on the River Jordan, thebaptismal site of many Christians. Here, we had the honor ofbeing rededicated by Fr. Michael in the same waters that Jesuswas baptized by John the Baptist.

Day 8 –Thursday—Sadly, we reached the last day of ourspiritual pilgrimage. Our final stop was at the site of the Wed-ding at Cana where our Lord performed His first miracle ofchanging water into wine. Two of the original stone water jarsstill exist. Arriving in Tel Aviv, we ate our farewell dinner andcontinued on to the airport for our evening flight back home. The members of the pilgrimage wish to thank the Lord for bless-ing us during our journey and to thank Fr. Michael for organiz-ing this trip. His spiritual vision brought the trip to fruition, andwe can’t wait to see what he is planning next! We also wish tothank our Tour Guide, Raed, who brought the Holy Land to lifethrough his extensive historical and biblical knowledge.

Two months later—Raed Makhouli came to Baltimore fora heartwarming reunion with Fr. Michael and the tour group. After attending Divine Liturgy on Sunday, August 22nd, Raedpresented a breathtaking slide show and enlightening narrationabout Israel. We wish to thank Raed for visiting us and for shar-ing his fervent love of the Holy Land with the community of St.Nicholas. We also wish to thank Fr. Michael and the Holy Landgroup for hosting Raed’s trip to Baltimore.Guest speaker Raed presenting his program on the Holy Land.
