    DORMITION OF THE VIRGIN MARY

    GREEK ORTHoDOX CHURCH

    (Kee

    ees)

My brothers and sisters in the household of God,

The Holy Eparchial Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is overseeing the rebuilding of the Saint Nicholas Church which was de-stroyed in the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001.

The new Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at Ground Zero will be far more that a rebuilt parish. It will be a National Shrine of our Holy Arch-diocese. It is destined to be a place of pilgrimage for our Nation and the whole world. In the next ten years, it is estimated that more than fifty mil-lion people will see this National Shrine of our Church. It represents a liv-ing embodiment of our Greek Orthodox Christian faith. It is at the epicen-ter of history that defines the Twenty-first Century.

Every Priest and Parish Council across the Archdiocese are encouraged to invite their fellow Parishioners, to make a one year commitment of $100 or more to raise the necessary funds to assist with the rebuilding of this Na-tional Shrine by 2016. Therefore, I personally invite you, your family to participate joyfully and enthusiastically.

I am asking you and your family to join you our Metropolis family across New England by contributing a minimum of $100 to demonstrate the unity of our Church and our commitment to our Faith. It will be a demonstration of the bonding to our heritage. Saint Nicholas, our National Shrine, will live forever.

The initiative for this program is being launched in all parishes throughout the country this coming Sun-day, November 8. The program ends on December 6-the Feast Day of St. Nicholas.

Praying that the blessings, peace and joy of our Lord be always with you,

    With Archpastoral love,

    M E T H O D I O S

    FATHERS REPORT

    KOI NOT H

Do you not realize that the Body of Christ (the Church) is liable to more diseases than this flesh of ours

and that it is infected more quickly and cured more slowly? (St. John Chrysostom, On the Priesthood, 4:2)

Dearly beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,

I feel obliged to express my feelings of gratefulness to you and share with you my enthusiasm for the

great success of the 2015 Parish Festival. All of you worked hard under the competent guidance of the Parish

Council and produced results that even much larger communities havent produced. I want to thank each one

of you for your sincere efforts to grant our community your time, talent and treasure. May God bless you in

    eternity!

With the occasion of our Churchs upcoming 100th Anniversary I want to share with you some engag-

ing thoughts about our common future. I want you to focus on the alarming statistics that describe church de-

cline in the United States which were presented at the Clergy Laity Assembly of our Metropolis. The Pew Fo-

rum now says that 35% in the Millennial generation have no religion, up 10 points from 2007. To make things

worse for us we learn that Orthodox Christians have one of the lowest rates of detention across Christian and

non-Christian denominations. Only 53% of adults who were raised in the Orthodox Church still identify

themselves as Orthodox Christians. Compare this to Hindus (80%), Jewish (75%), Mormon (64%) and

Catholic (59%). To make things even more worse, we no longer have new immigrants from Greece that would

replace those who walked away from our churches.

These statistics, as we can tell by watching our own diminishing numbers are grim. As the leader of

this parish I feel responsible to safeguard its future and entity. We must wake up and take action! We cant

face the second centennial of our Parishs challenges using those same ideas and working methods that have

contributed to its decline. A change is needed ! Our mission -salvation- will be the same, however the means

to attend it must be different! Our change will involve everything except the faith, the dogma of the Church.

In these times which are difficult for Christianity, we are left with one choice: to spread the Orhodox faith

among our fellow Americans. We must remember again the words of our Lord: Go into all the world and

preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15). We must remember that our role in the Church is to become

Christs disciples and not plain parish members.....

However, our parish environment becomes critical if we want to accept newcomers to Orthodoxy. We

must become friendlier, communicative, helpful. We must initiate welcoming and engagement practices, shar-

ing our parishs story, while learning and assimilating the culture and story of a newcomer. In our Church we

must create opportunities for friendship and fellowship service to new non-Greek members. We must become

capable to care about the issues not only of our fellow-parishioners, but also of our neighbors in the city of

Somerville. We must offer inspiring worship during our services so that people can encounter God in a life

changing way. Create gift based ministries and empowering leadership. We must take care of our property like

a good noikokyris!. We must make sure that the condition and appearance of our buildings is neat and attrac-

tive, representative of our Orthodox tradition! We have a duty, a huge responsibility to ensure the financial

support and future of our parish.

The Church, the parish, is the Body of Christ. What do we do when our body is sick? We call the doc-

tor. What do we do when the Body of Christ is sick, when the Parish is not in good health? The approach is the

same. We act biblically. We study the healing of the Paralytic when the Lord asked him: Do you want to be

made well? (John 5:1-5), and apply it to ourselves.

Dearly beloved fellow co-ministers in the Lords field, dearly beloved parishioners,

We walked together the way to Christ during the past four years. Together we did so many things. I

have seen you participate with enthusiasm in our churchs life. And I know that deep in your hearts you have

this flame where you want to help lead it to new heights. Now is the time to think about how to prepare our

home, to confront the looming winter. We need hard work, consensus and a lot of prayer. So that we can tell

the Lord when the time is ripe: Lord you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents be-

    sides them (Matt. 25:20).

    With Pastoral love,

    Fr. Konstantinos Manetas

missed mentioning anyone. Thank you all.

During the last few months of 2015, we will be doing the final preparations for the centennial celebra-

tion of our beloved Dormition Church. The fast approaching New Year is a very historic one. It marks the

100th year from the date our church was established by Greek immigrants many of whom came from Alatsata

in Asia Minor. The New Years Eve celebration will be the beginning of a full year of festivities which the

100th Anniversary Committee along with our Priest, the Parish Council and all the Churchs Ministries has

planned. Lets start celebrating this prominent year with a very exciting event. The Makredes Ensemble will

accompany us with their entertaining music. The affordable ticket prices will make it easy for all of us to par-

ticipate in the festivity of the New Years Eve celebration. Please obtain your tickets early.

All year long in 2016, many events have been planned to celebrate our faith and history and to honor

our heritage. The zenith of the festivities will be the Centennial Gala celebrating Dormition Churchs birthday

on Saturday October 22 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. You will have the

opportunity to view the Presidential Library, enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres with your friends in the 115-

foot high glass walls Museum Pavilion with the spectacular, panoramic view of the Boston harbor and savor a

delicious dinner at the Smith Hall with the fabulous view of the Boston skyline at night. Please obtain your

tickets early for this spectacular event. All year you will have opportunities for sponsorships and contributions

to many of events taking place. Please, look for further information as the events are approaching or contact

any of the 100th Anniversary Committee members, the churchs office or any of the Parish Council members.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to Evelyn and all the members of the 100th Anni-

versary Committee, Bill and Mike and all the members of the Centennial Gala Committee, and Carol and all

the members of the Album Committee who have been relentlessly working for over two years planning and

organizing these events. Thank you Harry for the wonderful stain window cards you have produced and do-

nated. The Strategic Planning Committee has concluded the first stage of the Strategic Planning process and

has prepared its recommendations. There will be a General Assembly on Sunday November 22 immediately

following the Divine Liturgy to present, discuss and approve these recommendations. The committee focused

the attention in the following three areas: Parish Development, Governance and Administration and Financial

Management. The members of the committee are: Father Konstantinos, Bill Galatis, Stephen Kalivas, Nick

Sarantopoulos, Narge Sparanges, Kostas Terzidis, Jack Toulopoulos, and yours truly. I would like to express

mine and the whole communitys sincere gratitude and appreciation for their hard work and congratulate them

for a well done job on a difficult subject. The second stage of the strategic planning process will be to evaluate and prioritize these recommendations and formulate a plan for the next few years. The third and final stage will be

to develop a strategy for implementing these recommendations.

    Respectfully,

    Vagelis

40 DAYS LITURGY FOR THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD

We are pleased to inform you that the Christmas 40 Days Liturgy will soon begin. If you wish to partici-

pate in the 40 Days Liturgy and forward the names of your loved ones then please fill in the forms at the

pangari. Please try and submit the names before Nov 14, 2015.

Those who wish to offer a donation with their 40 Days Liturgy may do so. Please note that any monies

submitted with the names for commemoration the Church will consider as a donation towards the Altar

Fund and will be used to buy the necessary gifts to God. We thank you for your support.

As many of you may know the commemoration of the names takes place during the Proskomedi service.

The Proskomedi is the service in which the Priest prepares the bread and wine to be offered in the Divine Lit-

urgy. After having removed from the bread (the prosphoro which represents the Holy Church, the body of the

Orthodox believers) the Lamb, (a cube shaped portion of the prosphoro) the Priest cuts out one portion in honor

of the Virgin Mary and other portions in honor of the angels, saints, the hierarch and the priesthood. Finally,

portions are removed for the names provided by the faithful; names for the health and salvation of the living and

for the repose of the dead. All these portions are placed on the diskos below the Lamb and used during Holy

    Communion.

    ....

    Dear Parishioners,

I am happy to announce that a new GOYA advisor has joined forces with Chief Advisor Peter Menounos.

Her name is Valia Bourboula. Her bio is rather impressive and I will share it with you:

She completed her studies in economics (BSc Econ) at the University of Patras (Greece). She finished her graduate studies on econometrics (Masters Degree in Financial Statistics) in Rotterdam (Netherlands). After Rot-terdam, from 2009 to 2013, she worked as an economist at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Ge-neva (Switzerland). From 2013 until today, she is still working for the ILO as an external consultant. In March 2015, she moved with her husband, Jason, to Somerville (MA, U.S.A.), and since July, has been attending the Master of Education in middle and high school Mathematics at Lesley University in Cambridge (MA, U.S.A.). When she completes the graduate program in education, she is aiming to work as a mathematics teacher in mid-dle and high school.

I feel absolutely comfortable to welcome Valia to her ministry in our church, to supervise the activities of

our children. I pray that together they advance in knowledge, friendship and faith.

  • CHOIR NOTES

As we enter the final months of the year we look forward to the upcoming holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas respectively. This is such a festive time of year. First we celebrate National Church Music Sunday the first Sunday of October, then we give thanks on Thanksgiving and finally we end the year by celebrating Christs birth. And then, in 2016, we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Church itself! Some exciting times coming up.

Choir is preparing for these times. In December, well be scaling back our Annual Christmas Concert. This is to prepare for a larger concert in 2016. Many more details to come. But this is also the time to join Choir if you are interested in getting more involved in the Divine Liturgy and want to help us celebrate our Choir, past, present and in the new year.

We have members who have been singing tirelessly for quite a number of years; Mary Limberakis, Carol Salvo, Angie Good, Anthoula Rozakis, Courtney Rowe,

Rich & Sue Silva and some newer members; Sevi Dres and Eleni Gangas.

Our young chanter, Richard Barrett, is also singing with us when he is finished helping our long-time chanter, Gregory on Sunday mornings. So it takes literally all kinds to make a choir what it is. There is no set formula for building a good choir, other than needing male and female voices who can carry a tune reasonably well and like singing the hymns of the Church.

Perhaps this is you as well? There is a time commitment for one weeknight rehearsal and Sunday morning but its a rewarding experience. So why not give choir a try for the new year and the upcoming 100th anniversary? As one of the great saints of the Church said, singing is praying twice. I am available to talk about Choir or any other aspect of music after any Sunday Liturgy and through the Church office. Music is my favorite subject.

    Honoring Our Legacy

Our Brickbottom Reunion last April was a resounding success. Co-Chairs Mary Limberakis and Peter Tsouri-anis did a fabulous job of planning, inviting, and welcoming everyone. The hall was decorated, the food was delicious, the company was superb, and the dancing feet were flying as the Makredes Ensemble played favor-ite songs! Thank you Mary and Peter!

At the Gyro Festival in May our Plant & Flower Sale tables were brimming over with flowers. After last win-ters record snowstorms, people were ready to have their gardens bloom with beautiful flowers. Our beauti-fully crafted stained glass window notecards are selling well. Individual notecards (blank inside) are $3.00 each (includes envelope) and the matted Axion Estin icon is suitable for framing ($7.00). Also sold in bun-dles. Send them for Christmas, Easter, name days, birthdays, sympathy, or just to keep in touch. See any member of the 100th Anniversary Committee to purchase.

In our research for the 100th Commemorative Honoring Our Legacy Album we have made great strides. In the last year more information has been found and weve crossed items off the list. Please contact Evelyn Galatis with any of the remaining information needed to fill in pieces of the puzzle.

In fact, if you like to write, we are looking for help writing and editing script for the 100th Anniversary Album. Contact Evelyn Galatis. Meetings are held at the Church 7:00 PM www.dormitionchurch.org Click on 100th Anniversary.

The 100th Anniversary Committee will soon present you the opportunity to purchase sponsorship pages for the Honoring Our Legacy Album. We want to promote family pages, memorialize ancestors, and incorpo-rate business ads to do justice to the strength of our Greek heritage and legacy. What is your familys leg-acy? What is your familys connection to our beloved Dormition Church through the century? How do you want your family to be remembered? As you plan your page, let it tell the story of your family. Let it show your own legacy and your connection to the Church through the century.

SAVE THE DATE! The Dormition of the Virgin Mary's 100th Anniversary Birthday Gala will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston, MA. This highlight is what we've been working towards these past 100 years. You cant miss this historic event!

  • If you would like to sponsor a coffee hour after Church,

please contact the Church Office. Coffee hours do not have to be only in memory of deceased loved ones. Two or more

families could also join together and sponsor a coffee hour.

You might want to consider hosting a coffee hour in honor of a family members birthday, name day, wedding, anniversary, graduation, promotion, retirement,

and beginning of fall, end of the winter, an early spring..or just because! If

you want the Parish Council to prepare the coffee hour for you, please contact the Church office for the different rates that are applicable depending upon what

    food you would like served.
