«Φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, Ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδὸν Κυρίου» (Ματθ. Γ:3)

My beloved in Christ, Happy New Year! On January 1, I completed my first year as the Presiding Priest of this blessed Community, with the help of God and the cooperation of many dedicated people. On this occasion, I would like to share a few thoughts. The beginning of the New Year is the beginning of a series of actions that take place during the 365 days, which constitute the period of one year. At this time of the year, many thoughts come to mind, creating a sense of inner longing. Saint Basil the Great, one of the great Fathers of the Church, who lived in the Fourth Century, speaks to us about the meaning of time. These thoughts of Saint Basil help us comprehend the greatness of this magnificent gift of God, which has been given to us to cultivate towards betterment of our world and to bring us closer to our Creator, as well as to bring us to a condition of being more godly, as we should be. Saint Basil’s thoughts are an answer, a catapult to the spirit of the world around us which discerns the tendency of man to attempt to make level and equal all of the elements that allow man to know himself and to approach God. This is the saint’s answer to those who proclaim that time is confined to the base and predestined boundaries of life and does not go into eternity, for the conquest of which requires many struggles, inner questioning and the continuous juxtaposition with the materialistic understanding of human life. The first dimension of time, according to Saint Basil, is found in his famous work, “The Exaemeron,” and is in relation to God. God is above and beyond all time, in the sense that He has neither a beginning nor an end. All of creation has a chronological beginning. However, not all of creation has a chronological end. At some point, God gave a beginning to the material world, and at some point, He will bring it to an end. This is in relation with the material beings. However, the spiritual beings, such as the Angels and the sovereign part of human life, the soul (or as the Fathers of the Church remind us, the prosopon) never have an end. They were created, but never disappear, never die. The second dimension of time, according to Saint Basil, is in relation to the material and present life, as we know it. Time can be compared to a bullet which moves, going down and not stopping. It travels constantly, revealing all that it has come into contact with. It is as if one is

traveling on a train and sees magnificent scenes being revealed to him, constantly, but they are not stable, but rather they disappear, before one may truly understand what one saw, leaving in their places other scenes, which also get lost, in time. This dimension of time reveals the debt that mankind has, in relation with the correct utilization of time, so as it does not go wasted. The person who uses it with this logic is able to tackle the challenges, with success, the various problems and moments of sorrow that are presented in this life. It is understood that time is a time for inner-spiritual cultivation and repentance. One is to take time, according to Saint Paul, not leaving a single second to pass without making use of it for the personal improvement, which suggests the outset for the improvement of the world. The third parameter of time, according to the Cappadocian saint, has to do with eternity. Time, in the present life, is just a drop of water in the ocean, in comparison to the unending eternity. However, we, as humans, actually face this fact in a distorted manner. We fail to understand that we are mere “visitors and travelers,” in this earthly reality, and that we are simply moving towards the reality of eternity, and for this reason we waste our time on material luxuries of this world, meanwhile forgetting the internal, spiritual needs of mankind, that will continue to exist and live, long after the corrupt flesh of this world has died. “We are not created for little life.” We are created for eternity. We are not created for the earth. We are created for Heaven. The earth is the nursery. At some point, we shall be transplanted from the nursery to the garden of paradise. All those who are faithful believers, all those who their tree of life full of fruit, will be transplanted to heaven.” “We hurry,” says Saint Basil, “so that the fruits and the gifts of God that have been planted in the gardens of the dwelling of God will come to bloom.” This understanding of time offers us the ability to enjoy life and to cultivate our understanding of eternal life. We are left with the choice… perhaps the most difficult choice… which is also an invitation. Ἀγαπητοί μοι ἐν Χριστῶ,

Καλή Χρονιά καί Χρόνια Πολλά!

Τῆ 1ῃ τοῦ τρέχοντος μηνός, συμπλήρωσα ἕν ἔτος, ὡς Ἱερατικῶς Προϊστάμενος τῆς ἀγαπημένης μας ἐνορίας, μέ τὴν βοήθειαν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τὴν συνεργασίαν πολλῶν. Ἐπ’εὐκαιρίᾳ, ἐπιθυμῶ ὅπως μοιράσω σκέψεις τινες.

Ἡ πρωτοχρονιά, ἡ ἀφετηρία τῆς νέας ἐτήσιας κυκλικής κινήσεως τοῦ χρόνου, ἡ ὁποία, πρό ἡμερῶν ἑορτάσαμε, προκαλεῖ εἰς ὅλους μας ποικίλας σκέψεις καὶ συναισθήματα. Μπορεῖ νὰ ἐπενδύεται, ἀπό τὴν πλασματική λαμπηδόνα τοῦ κόσμου, δὲν παύει, ὅμως, νὰ δημιουργεῖ διάθεση ἔντονης ἐσωστρέφειας καὶ ἐσωτερικῆς ἀναζήτησης. Ὁ Μέγας Βασίλειος, κακοποιεῖται βάναυσα ἀπό τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ κόσμου, καθώς προβάλλεται, αὐθαίρετα, ἄλλοτε ὡς σύμβολο τοῦ καταναλωτισμοῦ, καὶ ἄλλοτε ὡς σύμβολο τῆς κοσμικῆς εὐδαιμονίας, εἰς μίαν ἐποχήν, μάλιστα, κατά τὴν ὁποίαν ἡ ἀνθρωπότις δοκιμάζεται ἀπό τὴν φτώχειαν, τὴν ἀνέχεια καὶ τὴν δυστυχία, ἐνῶ ὁ ἴδιος ὑπήρξε καὶ εἶναι τὸ πρότυπο τοῦ ἀσκητικοῦ ἱδεώδους.

Αἱ σκέψεις τοῦ Ἁγίου Βασιλείου περί χρόνου βοηθοῦν νὰ κατανοήσουμε τὸ μέγεθος αὐτοῦ τοῦ κορυφαίου δώρου τὸ ὁποῖο χάρισε ὁ Θεός εἰς τὸ πλάσμα Του, προκειμένου νὰ τὰ ἀξιοποιήσει, νά τὸ καλλιεργήσει, μέ σκοπό τὴν διαρκή του βελτίωση καὶ τὴν κατά τὸ δυνατόν ὁμοίωση μαζί Του. Αἱ σκέψεις τοῦ Ἁγίου περί χρόνου εἶναι ἀπάντηση – καταπέλτης εἰς τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ σύγχρονου κόσμου, ὁ ὁποῖος διακρίνεται ἀπό μία τάση ἐπιμελούς ἰσοπέδωσης ἐκείνων τῶν στοιχείων τὰ ὀποία ἐπιτρέπουν εἰς τὸν ἄνθρωπον νὰ γνωρίσει τὸν ἑαυτό του καὶ νὰ πλησιάσει τὸν Θεό. Εἶναι ἡ ἀπάντησις πρὸς ἐκεῖνους ποὺ διακηρύσσουν ὅτι ὁ χρόνος περιορίζεται εἰς τὰ εὐτελή καὶ πεπερασμένα ὅρια αὐτῆς τῆς ζωῆς καὶ δὲν ἐπεκτείνεται εἰς τὴν αἰωνιότητα, διὰ τὴν κατάκτησιν τῆς ὁποίας ἀπαιτούνται ἀγώνες, ἐσωτερικάς ἀναμετρήσεις ἀλλά καὶ διαρκῆς ἀντιπαράθεση μὲ τὴν ὑλικοβιοτική ἀντίληψην τῆς ἀνθρώπινης ζωῆς.

Ἡ πρώτη διάστασις τοῦ χρόνου, τὴν ὁποίαν καταγράφει ὁ Μέγας Βασίλειος εἰς τὸ περίφημο ἔργο του «Εἰς τὴν Ἐξαήμερον,» ἔχει σχέση μὲ τὸν Θεόν. Ὁ Θεός εἶναι ὑπεράνω τοῦ χρόνου καί, ταυτοχρόνως, εἶναι ἐκτός χρόνου, ἀπό τὴν ἄποψιν ὅτι δὲν ἔχει χρονική ἀρχή καὶ δὲν θ’ ἀποκτήσει ποτέ χρονικό τέλος. Χρονική αρχή ἔχουν ὅλα τὰ δημιουργήματα, δὲν ἔχουν, ὅμως, ὅλα χρονικό τέλος. Κάποτε ὁ Θεός σήμανε τὴν ἔναρξη τοῦ ὑλικοῦ κόσμου, κάποτε θὰ σημάνει τό τέλος του. Αὐτό, ὅμως, ἀφορᾶ εἰς τὰ ὐλικά δημιουργήματά Του. Τά πνευματικά δημιουργήματα, ὅπως οἱ Ἄγγελοι καὶ τὸ ἡγεμονικό μέρος τῆς ἀνθρώπινης ὑπάρξεως, ἡ ψυχή, δὲν θὰ ἔχουν ποτέ τέλος. Δημιουργήθηκαν, ἀλλά δὲν ἐξαφανίζονται, δέν ἀποβιώνουν, δέν πεθαίνουν.

Ἡ δευτέρα διάσταση τοῦ χρόνου, κατά τὸν Μέγα Βασίλειο, σχετίζεται μὲ τὴν ὕλη καὶ τὴν παρούσα ζωή. Ὁ χρόνος ὡμοιάζει μὲ μία σφαίρα, ἡ ὁποία κυλᾶ εἰς τὸν

κατήφορο καὶ δὲν σταματᾶ. Ρέει ἀκατάπαυστα, ἀποκαλύπτοντας ὅ,τι καὶ ὅσα σχετίζονται μαζί του εἶναι ρέοντα καὶ ὄχι σταθερά. Σάν νὰ ταξιδεύει κανείς μὲ τὸ τραίνο καὶ βλέπει ν’ ἀποκαλύπτονται ἔμπροσθεν του διαδοχικά ὑπέροχα τοπία, τὰ ὁποία, ὅμως, δὲν εἶναι σταθερά, ἐξαφανίζονται πρὶν κἄν τὰ συνειδητοποιήσει ἀφήνοντας εἰς τὴν θέση τους ἄλλα τὰ ὁποία χάνονται, μὲ τὴν σειρά τους, εἰς τὰ ἀπύθμενο δοχεῖον τοῦ χρόνου, τὸ ὁποίον ἔχει τὴν μοναδική δυνατότητα νὰ μετατρέπει, αὐτοστιγμεῖ, τὸ παρόν εἰς τὸ παρελθόν. Αὐτή ἡ διάστασις τοῦ χρόνου ἀποκαλύπτει τὸ χρέος τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, τό ὁποίο ἀφορά εἰς τὴν σωστήν ἀξιοποίησή του προκειμένου αὐτός νὰ μὴν πάει χαμένος. Ἐκεῖνος ὁ ὁποῖο τὸν ἀντιμετωπίζει μὲ αὐτήν τὴν λογικήν, ἡμπορεῖ ν’ ἀντεπεξέλθει, μὲ ἐπιτυχία, εἰς τὰς θλίψεις καὶ εἰς τὰ προβλήματα τῆς ζωῆς. Ἀντιλαμβάνεται ὅτι ὁ χρόνος εἶναι εὐκαιρία ἐσωτερικῆς καλλιέργειας καὶ καιρός μετανοίας. Ἐξαγοράζει τὸν καιρό του, κατά τὴν προτροπή τοῦ Ἀποστόλου Παύλου, μή ἀφήνοντας τὴν κάθε στιγμή νὰ περάσει ἀναξιοποίητη διὰ τὴν προσωπική του βελτίωση, τὴν ὁποίαν συνιστᾶ τὴν ἀπαρχή διὰ τὴν βελτίωση τοῦ κόσμου.

Ἡ τρίτη παράμετρος τοῦ χρόνου, κατά τὸν Καππαδόκη Ἅγιον, σχετίζεται μὲ τὴν αἰωνιότητα. Ὁ χρόνος τῆς παρούσης ζωῆς εἶναι σταγόνα εἰς τὸν ὠκεανόν ἔμπροσθεν εἰς τὸ ἀτελεύτητο τῆς αἰωνιότητος. Καί, ὅμως, ἐμεῖς οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἀντιμετωπίζουμε τὸ γεγονός ἐντελώς διαστρεβλωμένο. Δὲν καταλαβαίνουμε ὅτι εἴμαστε «πάροικοι καὶ παρεπίδημοι» εἰς τὴν γήινη πραγματικότητα, εἴμαστε περαστικοί, ἀνέστιοι διαβάτες οἱ ὁποῖοι πορεύονται πρὸς τὴν πραγματικότητα τῆς αἰωνιότητας, δι’ αυτό καὶ κάνουμε τὸ πᾶν διὰ νὰ κτίσουμε καὶ νὰ δημιουργήσουμε εἰς αὐτήν τὴν ζωή μὲ τὰ καλύτερα ὑλικά, ξοδεύουμε τὰς δυνάμεις μας εἰς τὰ εὐτελή καὶ πεπερασμένα, ἀγνοῶντας τὰς ἀνάγκας τοῦ ἔσω ἀνθρώπου, ὁ ὁποῖος θὰ ζήσει αἰωνίως ὅταν τὸ φθαρτό του σαρκίο πεθάνει. «Δέν εἴμεθα πλασμένοι διὰ τὴν λίγη ζωή. Εἴμεθα πλασμένοι διὰ τὴν αἰωνιότητα. Δέν εἴμεθα πλασμένοι διὰ τὴν γῆν. Εἴμεθα πλασμένοι διὰ τὸν οὐρανό. Ἡ γῆ εἶναι τὸ φυτώριον. Κάποτε θὰ μεταφυτευτούμε ἀπό τὸ φυτώριο εἰς τὸν κήπο τοῦ παραδείσου. Ὅσοι εἶναι πιστοί, ὅσοι ἔχουν τὸ δένδρο τῆς ζωῆς των γεμάτο καρπούς, θά μεταφυτευτοῦν εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν. ‘Ἐπειγόμεθα,’ λέγει ὁ Μέγας Βασίλειος, ‘ἴνα ἔγκαρποι καὶ πλῆρεις ἔργων ἀγαθῶν φυτευθέντες ἐν τῶ οἶκῳ Κυρίου, ἐν ταῖς αὐλαῖς τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν ἐξανθήσωμεν.»

Αὐτή ἡ ἀντίληψις τοῦ χρόνου προσφέρει εἰς ὅλους μας τὴν δυνατότητα καὶ νὰ τὸν ἀπολαύσομε εἰς αὐτήν την ζωήν καὶ νὰ τὸν ἀξιοποιήσουμε εἰς τὴν προοπτικήν τῆς ἄλλης. Ἀπομένει εἰς ἐμᾶς ἡ ἐπιλογή – πρόκλησις, ἡ δυσκολότερη ἵσως αὐτῆς τῆς ζωῆς.

Dear Parishioners,

I wish everyone a very Happy New Year 2019, and I hope that all of you enjoyed a very blessed and joyful Christmas with your families. May 2019 be filled with our Lord’s Graces of health, happiness and love throughout our Saint George community and to all who come and visit as well.

This past year 2018, we were able to accomplish many new and exciting things for our Beloved Saint George. It is through the love of the community that we were able to reach these goals working together. The Board of Trustees with the support of all of you, and with hard work and dedication as well as many contributions was able to make it all possible.

The renovation and beautification project I believe has brought a new and fresh look to our beloved church. Just as we look to maintain our own homes, it is important to never forget that our Lord’s House always should be taken care of as well. This wonderful community stepped forward and made it all happen. From the interior of the church, the narthex, hallways, to the exterior with completion of the parking area and landscaping. We continue to work hard and focus on the remaining areas; the finishing of the interior of the church, the Memorial Room floor, the bell tower, air conditioning units, windows and hopefully in the near future an upgrade of the community center/gym. Again, with all YOUR help this CAN be possible!!! Our church has many needs, and together we will accomplish all that has to be taken care of.

I am very thankful I was able to serve as your Parish Council President, and I remain dedicated to always helping Saint George. I thank and appreciate everyone, individuals and organizations that are always working hard for the future of our church. Together we keep our FAITH alive, together we keep our CULTURE alive, and TOGETHER we can accomplish many things!! So let's begin 2019 by taking these first steps and make it all happen.

Αγαπητοί Ενορίτες,

Εύχομαι σε όλους και όλες μία Χαρούμενη Νέα Χρονιά, και ελπίζω ότι όλοι σας περάσατε ευτυχισμένα και χαρούμενα Χριστούγεννα με τις οικογένειές σας. Είθε το 2019 να είναι γεμάτο με υγεία, ευτυχία και αγάπη για την κοινότητα του Αγίου Γεωργίου καθώς και για όλους όσους έρχονται και μας επισκέπτονται.

Τη χρονιά που μας πέρασε, μπορέσαμε να πετύχουμε και να ολοκληρώσουμε πολλούς στόχους μας για τον Αγαπημένο μας Άγιο Γεώργιο. Μέσω της αγάπης που επέδειξε αυτή η κοινότητα μπορέσαμε να ικανοποιήσουμε όλα τα σχέδιά μας. Το Διοικητικό μας Συμβούλιο με την υποστήριξη όλων σας, και με σκληρή δουλειά και αφοσίωση, καθώς και με τις γενναιόδωρες προσφορές σας μπόρεσε να υλοποιήσει όλα όσα είχαν προγραμματιστεί.

Το σχέδιο ανακαίνισης της Εκκλησίας μας, πιστεύω μας έδωσε μία νέα πνοή και φρεσκάδα. Όπως φροντίζουμε για να διατηρούμε σε καλή κατάσταση τα σπίτια μας, είναι σημαντικό να μην ξεχνάμε ότι ο Οίκος του Θεού έχει ανάγκη της συνεχούς φροντίδας μας και διατήρησής αυτού. Αυτή η υπέροχη κοινότητα βοήθησε για την υλοποίηση αυτού του στόχου. Από το εσωτερικό της εκκλησίας, το νάρθηκα, τους διαδρόμους, έως και το εξωτερικό της εκκλησίας με την ολοκλήρωση της νέας περιοχής στάθμευσης και της δεντροφύτευσης αυτής, όλα αυτά ήταν έργα που έγιναν χάρη στη δική σας συνδρομή.

Από πλευράς μας, συνεχίζουμε να εργαζόμαστε σκληρά και πλέον επικεντρωνόμαστε στις ακόλουθες περιοχές: στην ολοκλήρωση της εκκλησίας, το Memorial Room, το καμπαναριό, τις μονάδες αέρα, τα παράθυρα της εκκλησίας και ευελπιστούμε στο εγγύτερο μέλλον να μπορέσουμε να φτιάξουμε και το δάπεδο του γυμναστηρίου. Όπως προείπα, με τη δική ΣΑΣ βοήθεια, ΟΛΑ μπορούν να γίνουν!!! Η εκκλησία μας έχει πολλές ανάγκες, και μόνο με τη δική σας στήριξη και προσπάθεια μπορούμε να τις ικανοποιήσουμε.

Είμαι ευγνώμων που μου δόθηκε η δυνατότητα να υπηρετήσω ως Πρόεδρος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου, και πάντα θα είμαι αφοσιωμένος και θα υπηρετώ τον αγαπημένο σε όλους μας Άγιο Γεώργιο. Ευχαριστώ και εκτιμώ τoν καθένα και την καθεμία από εσάς, καθώς και τους οργανισμούς της εκκλησίας, που πάντοτε εργάζεστε σκληρά για το μέλλον αυτής της Εκκλησίας και Κοινότητας. Μαζί μπορούμε να κρατήσουμε την ΠΙΣΤΗ μας ζωντανή, όπως επίσης και την ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΤΙΚΗ ΜΑΣ ΤΑΥΤΟΤΗΤΑ. ΜΑΖΙ μπορούμε να πετύχουμε πολλά!! Οπότε ας κάνουμε τα πρώτα αυτά βήματα για το 2019 μαζί!

Mark 12 says Jesus went to church with His disciples, "and He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury." Jesus' watch was very intimate. He intentionally went to where the offering was taken. He knew that how the people gave their money said something about their hearts. It's important to note that God is not interested in your money, but He is interested in how you use your money because that is a clear indicator of where your heart is.

Mark 12:41-44 King James Version (KJV)

41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.

42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.

43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:

44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

Do you share the same motivation? When the offering basket comes around, do you sit there and think in terms of giving to God? Or do you think in terms of how much you have left over in your wallet after the bills are paid? God isn't interested in how much you give, He wants to know why you give it. For if you give in abundance but not with your heart, how much is it truly worth? God wants us to give abundantly with all our love for Him. For all that we give He truly will return to us with all His love His bountiful rewards.

Στο κατά Μάρκον Ευαγγέλιο (12) αναφέρεται ότι ο Ιησούς πήγε στην εκκλησία μαζί με τους μαθητές Του "και κάθισε απέναντι από το θησαυροφυλάκιο και άρχισε να παρατηρεί πως ο λαός έβαζε χρήματα στο θησαυροφυλάκιο". Εσκεμμένα πήγε κοντά όπου ο κόσμος έδινε την προσφορά του. Ήξερε ότι η προσφορά των ανθρώπων ήταν ανάλογη αυτών που είχαν στην καρδιά τους. Είναι σημαντικό να σημειώσετε ότι ο Θεός δεν ενδιαφέρεται για τα χρήματά σας, αλλά ενδιαφέρεται για το πώς χρησιμοποιείτε τα χρήματά σας, επειδή αυτό είναι σαφής ένδειξη του πού βρίσκεται η καρδιά σας.

Μοιράζεστε το ίδιο κίνητρο; Όταν το καλάθι προσφοράς έρχεται γύρω, κάθεστε εκεί και σκέφτεστε τι θα δώσετε στο Θεό; Ή σκέφτεστε πόσα απομένουν στο πορτοφόλι σας μετά την πληρωμή των λογαριασμών; Ο Θεός δεν ενδιαφέρεται για το πόσο δίνεις, θέλει να ξέρει γιατί το δίνεις. Γιατί αν δώσετε σε αφθονία αλλά όχι με την καρδιά σας, πόση αξία πραγματικά έχει; Ο Θεός θέλει να δώσουμε άφθονα με όλη μας την αγάπη γι 'Αυτόν. Γιατί όλα όσα δίνουμε Αυτός πραγματικά θα τα επιστρέψει σε μας με όλη Του την αγάπη.

STEWARDSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Any person can give any amount for Stewardship. However, to be considered a member in good standing, to participate in the sacraments of Baptism or Wedding, and to have one vote in the General Assembly, the following minimums must be met:

• $400 for single adult or husband and wife (age 18-64): one vote (if both the husband and wife pay $400); ($800 total, both can vote)

• $300 for a married senior couple (Age 65+): one vote (if both the husband and wife pay $300); ($600 total, both can vote)

• $250 for single senior and college student (age 18-24, must show proof of attending college full time)

• Greater than the required contributions: those who have been blessed financially, should consider a greater contribution.

ΑΠΑΙΤΗΣΕΙΣ ΕΚΟΥΣΙΑΣ ΕΙΣΦΟΡΑΣ

Ο καθένας μπορεί να προσφέρει ό,τι μπορεί. Όμως, για να θεωρηθείτε κανονικό μέλος, να μπορείτε να πάρετε μέρος στα Mυστήρια της Βάπτισης και του Γάμου και να έχετε δικαίωμα μίας ψήφου στην Γενική Συνέλευση, απαιτούνται οι κάτωθι ελάχιστες εισφορές:

• $400 ανά ανύπαντρο άτομο ή οικογένεια (18-64 ετών): μία ψήφος (εάν ο σύζυγος και η σύζυγος πληρώσουν $400 έκαστος (σύνολο $400, ψηφίζουν και οι δύο)

• $300 ανά ηλικιωμένο ζευγάρι (άνω των 65 ετών): μία ψήφος (εάν ο σύζυγος και η σύζυγος πληρώσουν $300 έκαστος (σύνολο $600), ψηφίζουν και οι δύο)

HOUSE BLESSINGS 2019

Father Nektarios will visit you to bless your home and your family the days following Epiphany. Please call the Church office at 732-463-1642 for an appointment.

When Father Nektarios comes to your home, all the family members are encouraged to gather in a room of your home with an icon, a candle and a small censer (optional). When Father Nektarios finishes with the prayers and begins to sprinkle the house with the Holy Water, he will ask for a member of the family to guide him around the house so that every room may be blessed.

ΑΓΙΑΣΜΟΣ ΤΩΝ ΟΙΚΩΝ 2019

Ο Πατήρ Νεκτάριος θα επισκεφτεί τα σπίτια σας για τον καθιερωμένο αγιασμό τις μέρες μετά τα Θεοφάνεια. Παρακαλούμε τηλεφωνήστε στο Γραφείο της Εκκλησίας για να κλείσετε ραντεβού.

Όταν φτάσει ο Πατήρ Νεκτάριος, θα πρέπει να έχετε έτοιμο τον κατάλογο με τα ονόματα όλων των μελών της οικογενείας. Όλα τα μέλη της οικογενείας προτρέπονται να είναι παρόντα και να συγκεντρωθούν σε ένα δωμάτιο του σπιτιού με μια εικόνα, ένα κερί και ένα θυμιατό πάνω στο τραπέζι. Όταν ο Πατήρ Νεκτάριος τελειώσει τις προσευχές και αρχίσει να ραντίζει το σπίτι με τον αγιασμό, θα ζητήσει να τον οδηγήσετε σε όλα τα δωμάτια του σπιτιού.

Ο Μέγας Αγιασμός προτείνεται από τους πνευματικούς σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις, όπου ο εξομολογούμενος έχει πέσει σε κάποιο αμάρτημα και δεν έχει ευλογία να κοινωνήσει. Ο πνευματικός του, λοιπόν, του προτείνει να νηστέψει και να πιεί Αγιασμό για να παρηγορηθεί. Ο Αγιασμός δεν αντικαθιστά την Θεία Κοινωνία, η οποία είναι το υπέρτατο δώρο του Θεού στον άνθρωπο. Γύρω από τό θέμα του Μεγάλου Αγιασμού οι πιστοί θέτουν διάφορες απορίες. Ερωτούν: «Πίνεται ο αγιασμός της παραμονής των Θεοφανείων; Μπορούμε να έχουμε το Μεγάλο Αγιασμό στο σπίτι μας και να τον χρησιμοποιούμε;». Πολλοί δίνουν αβασάνιστα μια πρόχειρη απάντηση με αποτέλεσμα να δημιουργείται σύγχυση.

Ο Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος λέγει για το Μεγάλο Αγιασμό και τη φύλαξή του: «Κατά την εορτήν ταύτην άπαντες υδρευσάμενοι, οίκαδε τα νάματα αποτίθενται και εις ενιαυτόν ολόκληρον φυλάττουσιν… Και το σημείον γίνεται εναργές, ού διαφθειρομένης της των υδάτων εκείνων φύσεως τω μηκέτι του χρόνου, αλλ’ εις ενιαυτόν ολόκληρον και δύο και τρία πολλάκις έτη του σήμερον αντληθέντος ύδατος ακεραίου και νεαρού μένοντος». Δηλαδή, με λίγα λόγια, όσος καιρός κι αν περάσει, παραμένει κρυστάλλινος, ως μόλις τώρα ελήφθη από την πηγήν.

Η ακολουθία του αγιασμού των υδάτων την ημέρα των Θεοφανείων είναι μια παλιά ιερή συνήθεια/πράξη της Εκκλησίας μας. Ευχές για τον αγιασμό του νερού βρίσκουμε σε αρχαιότερα κείμενα όπως οι Αποστολικές Διαταγές, Αποστολική Παράδοση του Ιππόλυτου και στο Ευχολόγιο του Σεραπίωνα, Επισκόπου Θμουέως κ.ά. Τελείται δύο φορές, την παραμονή και την κυριώνυμον ημέρα των Θεοφανείων, μετά το τέλος της Θ. Λειτουργίας. Και στις δύο περιπτώσεις τελείται η ίδια ακριβώς ακολουθία. Μόνη διαφορά: ο πρόλογος της μεγάλης καθαγιαστικής ευχής δηλ. από το «Τριάς Υπερούσιε…» μέχρι το «συνεχόμενος φόβω εν κατανύξει βοώ σοι», διαβάζεται μόνο την ημέρα των Θεοφανείων. Ο Αγιασμός, λοιπόν, και των δύο

ημερών είναι ακριβώς ο ίδιος, «Μέγας Αγιασμός».

Εις το Άγιον Όρος οι μοναχοί κοινωνούν του Μεγάλου Αγιασμού όχι μόνον κατά την ημέρα των Θεοφανείων, αλλά κατά την συνήθειά τους να πίνουν αγιασμό κάθε μέρα μετά την Θ. Λειτουργία, πίνουν από τον Μ. Αγιασμό της παραμονής όλο το οκταήμερο μετά τα Φώτα, μέχρι της αποδόσεως της εορτής. Επομένως, πίνεται ο Αγιασμός αυτός. Και πίνεται, ως γνωστόν, μετά την Θεία Μετάληψη και πριν να πάρουμε το αντίδωρο (ή ο,τιδήποτε άλλο). Το κείμενο της Ακολουθίας του Μ. Αγιασμού αναφέρει: «ίνα πάντες οι αρυόμενοι και μεταλαμβάνοντες έχοιεν αυτό (το ηγιασμένο ύδωρ…) προς ιατρείαν παθών, προς αγιασμόν οίκων, προς πάσαν ωφέλειαν επιτήδειον», και δή και «δαίμοσιν ολέθριον, ταίς εναντίαις δυνάμεσιν απρόσιτον» (πρβλ. και τη συναφή ευχή σε βασκανία· «φυγάδευσον και απέλασον πάσαν διαβολικήν ενέργειαν, πάσαν σατανικήν έφοδον και πάσαν επιβουλήν… και οφθαλμών βασκανίαν των κακοποιών ανθρώπων»).

Με το Μεγάλο Αγιασμό έχουμε ένα ισχυρό θεραπευτικό μέσο – φάρμακο, διδόμενο εκτάκτως και σε εξαιρετικές περιπτώσεις. Με το ραντισμό του εκδιώκονται από κάθε τόπο τα πονηρά πνεύματα· συγχωρούνται συγγνωστά καθημερινά αμαρτήματα, δηλαδή δαιμονικές φαντασίες και αισχροί λογισμοί, εκδιώκονται ασθένειες και δίδεται ψυχική και σωματική υγεία. Και για να λεχθεί πιο συνοπτικά: όλοι όσοι τον δέχονται με πίστη παίρνουν αγιασμό και ευλογία. Γι’ αυτό μπορεί να φυλάσσεται στο σπίτι (με επιμέλεια και ευλάβεια) και να πίνουν απ’ αυτόν οι πιστοί σε καιρό ασθένειας ή για αποτροπή βασκανίας και κάθε σατανικής ενέργειας. Φυσικά, καλόν είναι, όπως αυτό γίνεται και με την ευλογία του πνευματικού τους.

Με τον τρόπο αυτό χειραγωγείται ο πιστός να αποφεύγει άλλες «διεξόδους» (μαγείες, «ξόρκια», και άλλες μεθοδείες του πονηρού), και να καταφεύγει στα έγκυρα «αγιάσματα» της Εκκλησίας, όπως είναι ο Μέγας, αλλά και ο Μικρός Αγιασμός.

STEWARDSHIP 2019


Theophany is the Feast which reveals the Most Holy Trinity to the world through the Baptism of the Lord (Mt.3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22). God the Father spoke from Heaven about the Son, the Son was baptized by Saint John the Forerunner, and the Holy Spirit descended upon the Son in the form of a dove. From ancient times this Feast was called the Day of Illumination and the Feast of Lights, since God is Light and has appeared to illumine “those who sat in darkness,” and “in the region of the shadow of death” (Mt.4:16), and to save the fallen race of mankind by grace.

In the ancient Church it was the custom to baptize catechumens at the Vespers of Theophany, so that Baptism also is revealed as the spiritual illumination of mankind.

The origin of the Feast of Theophany goes back to Apostolic times, and it is mentioned in The Apostolic Constitutions (Book V:13). From the second century we have the testimony of Saint Clement of Alexandria concerning the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord, and the night vigil before this Feast.

There is a third century dialogue about the services for Theophany between the holy martyr Hippolytus and Saint Gregory the Wonderworker. In the following centuries, from the fourth to ninth century, all the great Fathers of the Church: Gregory the Theologian, John Chrysostom, Ambrose of Milan, John of Damascus, commented on the Feast of Theophany.

The monks Joseph the Studite, Theophanes and Byzantios composed much liturgical music for this Feast, which is sung at Orthodox services even today. Saint John of Damascus said that the Lord was baptized, not because He Himself had need for cleansing, but “to bury human sin by water,” to fulfill the Law, to reveal the mystery of the Holy Trinity, and finally, to sanctify “the nature of water” and to offer us the form and example of Baptism.

On the Feast of the Baptism of Christ, the Holy Church proclaims our faith in the most sublime mystery, incomprehensible to human intellect, of one God in three Persons. It teaches us to confess and glorify the Holy Trinity, one in Essence and Undivided. It exposes and overthrows the errors of ancient teachings which attempted to explain the Creator of the world by reason, and in human terms.

The Church shows the necessity of Baptism for believers in Christ, and it inspires us with a sense of deep gratitude for the illumination and purification of our sinful nature. The Church teaches that our salvation and cleansing from sin is possible only by the power of the grace of the Holy Spirit, therefore it is necessary to preserve worthily these gifts of the grace of holy Baptism, keeping clean this priceless garb, for “As many as have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ” (Gal 3:27).

On the day of Theophany, all foods are permitted, even if the Feast falls on a Wednesday or Friday.

Τα Θεοφανία είναι η γιορτή που αποκαλύπτει την Αγία Τριάδα στον κόσμο μέσω του Βάπτισης του Κυρίου (Ματθαίου .3: 13-17 · Μάρκου 1: 9-11 · Λουκά 3: 21-22). Ο Θεός μίλησε από τον Ουρανό για τον Υιό, ο Υιός βαφτίστηκε από τον Άγιο Ιωάννη τον Πρόδρομο και το Άγιο Πνεύμα κατέβηκε στον Υιό με τη μορφή ενός περιστεριού. Από την αρχαιότητα η Γιορτή αυτή ονομαζόταν Ημέρα του Φωτισμού και η Γιορτή των Φώτων, αφού ο Θεός είναι Φως και φάνηκε να φωτίζει "αυτούς που κάθονταν στο σκοτάδι" και "στην περιοχή της σκιάς του θανάτου" (Ματ.4: 16), και να σώσουμε τη φυλή της ανθρωπότητας με χάρη.

Στην αρχαία Εκκλησία ήταν το έθιμο να βαφτίζονται οι κατηχημίες την παραμονή των Θεοφανείων, έτσι ώστε η Βάπτιση να αποκαλύπτεται επίσης ως ο πνευματικός φωτισμός της ανθρωπότητας.

Η προέλευση των Θεοφανείων πηγάζει από τους Αποστολικούς χρόνους και αναφέρεται στα Αποστολικά Συντάγματα (Βιβλίο V: 13). Από τον δεύτερο αιώνα έχουμε την μαρτυρία του Αγίου Κλήμεντος της Αλεξάνδρειας σχετικά με τον εορτασμό του Βαπτίσματος του Κυρίου και τη νυχτερινή επαγρύπνηση πριν από αυτή τη γιορτή.

Υπάρχει ένας διάλογος του τρίτου αιώνα για τη λειτουργία των Θεοφανείων μεταξύ του ιερού μαρτύρος Ιππόλυτου και του Αγίου Γρηγορίου του Θεολόγου. Από τον τέταρτο έως τον ένατο αιώνα, όλοι οι μεγάλοι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας: ο Γρηγόριος ο Θεολόγος, ο Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος, ο Αμβρόσιος του Μιλάνου, ο Ιωάννης της Δαμασκού, αναφέρονται στη γιορτή των Θεοφανείων.

Οι μοναχοί Ιωσήφ ο Σπουδαστής, ο Θεοφάνης και ο Βυζάντιος συνέθεσαν λειτουργική μουσική γι 'αυτή τη γιορτή, η οποία ψάλλεται ακόμα και σήμερα στις ορθόδοξες λειτουργίες. Ο Άγιος Ιωάννης της Δαμασκού είπε ότι ο Κύριος βαφτίστηκε, όχι επειδή ο ίδιος είχε ανάγκη για καθαρισμό, αλλά για "να θάψει την ανθρώπινη αμαρτία με νερό", να εκπληρώσει τον Νόμο, να αποκαλύψει το μυστήριο της Αγίας Τριάδας και τέλος να αγιάσει " τη φύση του ύδατος "και να μας προσφέρει τη μορφή και το παράδειγμα της βαπτίσεως.

Στη γιορτή της Βαπτίσεως του Χριστού, η Ιερά Εκκλησία διακηρύσσει την πίστη μας στο πιο υψηλό μυστήριο, ακατανόητο για την ανθρώπινη διάνοια, ενός Θεού σε τρία πρόσωπα. Μας διδάσκει να ομολογούμε και να δοξάζουμε την Αγία Τριάδα, την Ουσία και την Ανεξαρτησία. Εκθέτει και ανατρέφει τα λάθη των αρχαίων διδασκαλιών που προσπάθησαν να εξηγήσουν τον Δημιουργό του κόσμου από τη λογική και από ανθρώπινη άποψη.

Η Εκκλησία δείχνει την αναγκαιότητα του Βαπτίσματος για τους πιστούς στον Χριστό και μας εμπνέει με μια αίσθηση βαθιάς ευγνωμοσύνης για τον φωτισμό και τον καθαρισμό της αμαρτωλής μας φύσης. Η Εκκλησία διδάσκει ότι η σωτηρία και ο καθαρισμός μας από την αμαρτία είναι δυνατή μόνο από τη δύναμη της χάριτος του Αγίου Πνεύματος, γι' αυτό είναι απαραίτητο να διαφυλάξουμε με αξιοπρέπεια αυτά τα δώρα της χάριτος του αγίου Βαπτίσματος, διατηρώντας καθαρό αυτό το ανεκτίμητο ένδυμα.

Την ημέρα των Θεοφανείων επιτρέπονται όλα τα τρόφιμα, ακόμη και εάν η εορτή πέφτει Τετάρτη ή Παρασκευή.

Happy New Year and Xronia Polla to all our Saint George parishioners. May we all enjoy a very healthy, happy and peaceful New Year 2019 !

Saint Barbara Philoptochos continues to be very active and busy. In 2018 we satisfied our many National and Metropolis Philoptochos obligations, along with sewing and distributing baby blankets and gown, cooking for the homeless, baking and selling Baklava for Thanksgiving, selling Christmas Bread and Vasilopites, and celebrating our Saint Barbara Nameday with a liturgy and

Artoklasia. Ladies also visit members of our community who are in assisted living, nursing homes, or can no longer leave their home. We also give monetary assistance to five Food Banks in the area and provide assistance to those in need in our parish and community through the Needy Cases Fund. Because of the generous donations through the Community Christmas Card we are able to help so many organizations and families in need. Thank you for your continued support and God bless you!

On Sunday, December 2nd the Philoptochos held our annual Saint Barbara Luncheon at the Stoney Brook Grille with a delicious meal and many lovely raffle prizes. Tuesday, December 4th the Philoptochos celebrated our patron Saint Barbara with a liturgy and Artoklasia. Thank you to the ladies who donated the flowers and decorated the icon of Saint Barbara, and all who attended and helped make this a beautiful celebration.

Sunday, January 13, 2019 will be the celebration and Vasilopita Luncheon for Saint Basil. A delicious meal will be served and ALL donations will go to Saint Basil Academy and the children who live and attend school there. Please mark your calendars to attend and be part of this beautiful tradition.

Orthodox Sunday, which is March 17, 2019 will be the Philoptochos annual Lenten Luncheon after the Divine Liturgy. The Philoptochos will have a memorial service and koliva in remembrance and honor of our deceased members. The luncheon will be held in the AHEPA Hall and proceeds will go to help and support the Holy Cross College and Seminary in Brookline, Massachusetts.

The Ladies Philoptochos Society is such an integral, important and vital organization of each Greek Orthodox Church. The success and ability to help people within our church community and outside the community is only as strong as its membership. We are a wonderful group of ladies who commit and work together to accomplish so many goals and we need more ladies to join us in our endeavors. Please, if you are not yet a member, join us and have a great feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. If you are already a member, we thank you for your continued help and support.

Η Φιλόπτωχος «Αγία Βαρβάρα» εξακολουθεί να είναι πολύ δραστήρια και απασχολημένη. Το 2018 ικανοποιήσαμε τις πολυάριθμες υποχρεώσεις του Εθνικού και Μητροπολιτικού Συμβουλίου της Φιλοπτωχου, μαζί με το ράψιμο και τη διανομή παιδικών κουβερτών και φορεμάτων, το μαγείρεμα για τους άστεγους, το ψήσιμο και την πώληση Μπακλαβά για τη γιορτή των Ευχαριστιών, την πώληση Χριστόψωμων και Βασιλόπιτων και εορτάζοντας την γιορτή της Αγίας Βαρβάρας με Λειτουργία και Αρτοκλασία. Οι κυρίες επισκέπτονται επίσης μέλη της κοινότητάς μας, που βρίσκονται σε μέρη υποβοηθούμενης διαβίωσης, γηροκομεία ή δεν μπορούν πλέον να βγουν από το σπίτι τους. Παρέχουμε επίσης οικονομική βοήθεια σε πέντε Τράπεζες Τροφίμων στην περιοχή, και παρέχουμε βοήθεια σε όσους έχουν ανάγκη στην ενορία και την κοινότητά μας μέσω του Ταμείου για τις Περιπτώσεις Αναγκών. Λόγω των γενναιόδωρων δωρεών μέσω της κοινοτικής κάρτας Χριστουγέννων, είμαστε σε θέση να βοηθήσουμε τόσους πολλούς οργανισμούς και οικογένειες που έχουν ανάγκη. Σας ευχαριστούμε για τη συνεχή υποστήριξή σας και ο Θεός να σας ευλογεί!

Την Κυριακή 2 Δεκεμβρίου η Φιλόπτωχος πραγματοποίησε το ετήσιο γεύμα προς τιμή της Αγίας Βαρβάρας στο εστιατόριο Stoney Brook Grille με ένα υπέροχο γεύμα και πολλά υπέροχα βραβεία. Την Τρίτη 4 Δεκεμβρίου η Φιλόπτωχος γιόρτασε την προστάτιδά μας Αγία Βαρβάρα με Θεία λειτουργία και Αρτοκλασία. Ευχαριστούμε τις κυρίες που δώρισαν τα λουλούδια και διακόσμησαν την εικόνα της Αγίας Βαρβάρας και όλους όσοι παρακολούθησαν και βοήθησαν να γίνει μια όμορφη γιορτή.

Την Κυριακή 13 Ιανουαρίου 2019 θα γίνει η γιορτή και το γεύμα για την κοπή της Βασιλόπιτας. Ένα υπέροχο γεύμα θα σερβιριστεί και ΟΛΕΣ οι δωρεές θα πάνε στην Ακαδημία του

Αγίου Βασιλείου για τα παιδιά που ζουν και πηγαίνουν στο σχολείο εκεί. Σημειώστε τα ημερολόγιά σας για να παρακολουθήσετε και να συμμετάσχετε σε αυτή την όμορφη παράδοση.

Την Κυριακή της Ορθοδοξίας, στις 17 Μαρτίου 2019, θα γίνει το νηστίσιμο γεύμα μετά την Θεία Λειτουργία. Η Φιλοπτώχος θα έχει μνημόσυνο και κόλυβα εις μνήμη και τιμή των αποθανόντων μελών μας. Το γεύμα θα πραγματοποιηθεί στην Αίθουσα ΑΧΕΠΑ και τα έσοδα θα πάνε για να βοηθήσουν και να υποστηρίξουν το Κολλέγιο και το Σεμινάριο του

Τιμίου Σταυρού στο Μπρουκλάιν της Μασσαχουσέτης.

Η Φιλόπτωχος είναι μια τόσο αναπόσπαστη, σημαντική και ζωτικής σημασίας οργάνωση κάθε Ελληνικής Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας. Η επιτυχία και η ικανότητα να βοηθήσουμε τους ανθρώπους μέσα στην εκκλησιαστική μας κοινότητα και έξω από την κοινότητα είναι τόσο ισχυρή όσο η ένταξή της. Είμαστε μια θαυμάσια ομάδα κυριών που δεσμεύονται και εργάζονται μαζί για να επιτύχουν τόσους στόχους και χρειαζόμαστε περισσότερες κυρίες για να μας βοηθήσουν στις προσπάθειές μας. Our GOYAns are continuing their activities leading up to the new year! In the past months we have had many events that are keeping our youth busy.

During our trip to Boston, over the November 9th-11th weekend, the 20 GOYAns who attended experienced the beautiful campus of Hellenic College Holy Cross. We had to privilege to hear the stories from our own Very Reverend Father Nektarios Cottros who attended the school back in the day. We had the opportunity to attend vespers and liturgy that weekend as well. Also we spoke with a seminarian who took around the campus and taught us more about how we can strengthen our faith in time where social media is so prevalent in our lives. In addition to touring the grounds of the school, we were able to explore the city and visit Patriots Place and Faneuil Hall.

In December, we held our annual Taverna night benefiting the charity Feeding Middlesex County. We are so grateful for the turn out at the event, and all those who helped contribute their time and efforts helping set up and clean up at the end of our

successful night. It was amazing to see our Saint George community come together for this wonderful event.

Our GOYAns also contributed their efforts at our charity night held on December 7th. We all gathered together to make blankets that we sent to the children’s hospitals in Rahway and Raritan Bay medical center. This was another great opportunity for the GOYAns to spend quality time with each other.

The GOYAns participated in the annual Christmas dance, held at the St. George church in Asbury Park. This was a time for our youth to get together with other GOYA communities and dance the night away!

In the new year our dancers will be traveling to Maryland the weekend of January 19th to compete in the Hellenic folk dance festival, which is hosted by the metropolis of New Jersey. Our dancers are busy practicing in the weeks leading up to the competition in hopes to bring home a title!

We are also encouraging all of our GOYAns to sign up and participate in the Sights and Sounds competition that is going to

be held on March 2nd at Westfield church. It is a great way for our talented youth to show off their capabilities and compete with other parishes. We will be hosting our home show on February 24th, so our St. George community can see the outstanding performances.

A special congratulations to Elisabeth Gallou, George Bizos, and Stella Petrou in winning first place in the AHEPA mid Atlantic history competition that took place at Cherry Hill church. They will be advancing to nationals in Chicago, best of luck to the team for more success!

As we start the New Year, the Saint George P.T.O. board wishes a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous Year to all the parishioners.

The PTO Executive Board would like to extend our

sincere thanks to all the parents that volunteered their time, helped by baking and/or purchasing treats at our annual bake sale. Your support during this event was valuable and your contributions have helped the organization tremendously.

We would like to thank everyone who helped, donated and supported the Annual P.T.O Christmas Communion Breakfast and Toy Drive. Special thank you to Father Nektarios who helped us with the flat top grill and assisting with many details, Perkins for donating pancake mix and syrup, Eleni Apostolakis & Family for donating the eggs, George Kostis and Michael Bizos for preparing the delicious food, Joy and Hope for the crafts and special gifts, Mrs. Anna Lorino, Mrs. Athinoulla Bizos, Mr. Paul Stevens, Mr. Ralph Caputo, Mr. Kosta Apostolakis for helping set-up and clean-up the AHEPA hall, Mr. Kostas Hantsoulis for playing the Christmas music, The PTO Board, PTO members and parish volunteers who helped serve the food and of course Santa Claus for taking the time to come and visit the children.

We would like to thank everyone who donated toys/gift cards for our Annual Toy Drive. All toys and gift cards were donated to Woman Aware in New Brunswick, NJ. A safe

house for women and children from abusive homes. We would like to thank all the Greek and Sunday School

families that purchased Gertrude Chocolates for our Holiday Fundraiser. It was a successful fundraiser and we appreciate

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ — GREEK SCHOOL

Αγαπητοί Γονείς και Μέλη της Ενορίας μας, Σας ευχόμαστε Yγεία, Xαρά και Eυτυχία για το Νέο Έτος 2019 και στα παιδιά ευχόμαστε καλή επιτυχία και καλή πρόοδο στα μαθήματά τους. Την πρώτη και δεύτερη εβδομάδα του Δεκεμβρίου όλοι οι μαθητές του σχολείου εκτός από τους μαθητές των μικρών τάξεων, έγραψαν με μεγάλη επιτυχία το πρώτο διαγώνισμα και στην συνέχεια, την εβδομάδα πριν τα Χριστούγεννα, οι δασκάλες μίλησαν με τους γονείς σχετικά με την πρόοδο των παιδιών τους. Θα θέλαμε να σας ενημερώσουμε ότι όσοι γονείς δεν είχαν την ευκαιρία να μιλήσουν με την δασκάλα του παιδιού τους, μπορούν να κανονίσουν μια συνάντηση για κάποια άλλη μέρα μετά το σχολείο. Επιθυμούμε να έχουμε πάντα την συνεργασία των γονέων γιατί τα παιδιά έχουν περισσότερες πιθανότητες επιτυχίας όταν οι γονείς είναι ενήμεροι για τις σχολικές διαδικασίες και συνεχίζουν το σχολικό έργο στο σπίτι. Το Σάββατο 26 Ιανουαρίου, το Ελληνικό μας Σχολείο θα συμμετάσχει στον εορτασμό των Τριών Ιεραρχών που διοργανώνεται από την Εκκλησία του Αγίου Αθανασίου στο Paramus της Νέας Ιερσέης. Την Κυριακή 27 Ιανουαρίου μετά την Λειτουργία, το σχολείο μας θα τιμήσει την εορτή των Τριών Ιεραρχών που είναι και η ημέρα των Γραμμάτων, με ποιήματα, τραγούδια και με μια μεγάλη ομιλία για τη ζωή και το έργο των Τριών Ιεραρχών. Στην γιορτή αυτή θα έχουμε και την βοήθεια του ΣΓΚ, γι’αυτό θέλουμε να ευχαριστήσουμε θερμά τα μέλη του Συλλόγου που μας βοηθούν σε όλες τις γιορτές και σε όλες τις ανάγκες του σχολείου. Dear Parents and Members of our St. George Community, We wish you Health, Joy and Happiness for the New Year and to the children we wish continued success and progress in their studies. During the first and second weeks of December all students of our school, except for the ones in the smaller grades, took the first exam and the following week the teachers held parent teacher conferences to discuss the progress of their children. Please note that the parents who did not have the opportunity to talk with their child's teacher, could schedule another meeting with the teacher after school. We always want to have the cooperation of the parents so that we may better help the children. On Saturday, January 26, our Greek School will participate in the special celebration of the Feast of the Three Hierarchs to be held at the St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Paramus, NJ. On Sunday, January 27, our school is preparing a big celebration in our church to honor the Feast of the Three Hierarchs which is also the celebration of Greek Letters, with poems, songs and a great speech about the life and works of the Three Hierarchs. In this celebration we will have the help of the PTO, so we would like to take the opportunity to thank the members of the organization who help us with all the events and all the needs of the school. Dear Parents and Members of our St. George Community,

We hope you had a wonderful celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and your New Year will be filled with hope, joy and love. We would like to thank you for your support in providing an Orthodox Christian foundation of faith and values to your children. We would like to express our deep gratitude to our volunteer organization for all their efforts, dedication and perseverance.

Some highlights of the activities conducted these past three months follow.

We held our Open House in October; parents of our children could observe both the classroom lessons and their children in action. We thank those who joined us and we always appreciate your valuable feedback.

Some of our older students and teachers and several community members visited the Holy Protection of the Theotokos Monastery in October. It was a Saturday filled with spiritual refreshments. Our Catechism Program will continue to organize a trip to the Holy Protection of the Theotokos Monastery annually, on the second or third Saturday of each October.

We would also like to share with you that once again we had a very successful Thanksgiving Food Drive. All collected food items (50 bags) were provided to the Piscataway ‘FISH Hospitality’ program. FISH is a non-

denominational Christian organization that serves homeless families and others experiencing financial difficulties.

Our annual Christmas Pageant was once again a great success and we thank the many participants for all their efforts. The 8th-9th grade students presented the ‘The Birth of Jesus’ in both the English and Greek languages, our little ones were our perfect angels, our students of grades 4-6th served as some of our shepherds and all our children sang beautifully Christmas Carols in both English and Greek. We know that we live in a secular society

and our church serves as one of the few places to gain knowledge of our Savior Jesus Christ and our Christian faith.

In each issue of the Voice of Saint George we present a summary of the curricula followed by several grades. Today we will present the curriculum of Grades 8 – 12.

Grade 8: History of the Church from its birth (at Pentecost) to

today - the life and struggles of early Christians including that of many saints; the teachings and 4 journeys of Saint Paul; the Seven Ecumenical Councils; the rise and fall of Constantinople; the Great Schism; Orthodoxy under Turkish occupation; Orthodoxy under communism, Orthodoxy in America in the 20th Century, etc.

Grade 9: Connecting the Bible to our lives – Jesus Christ as the Way, the Shepherd, the Good News, the Truth, the Life of the World, the Resurrection, etc. Also discussed is the fulfillment of the many prophesies found in the Old Testament of the coming of Jesus Christ.

Grades 10-12: This class uses the teaching of the Bible to relate to everyday life, and it provides the tools needed to face every day challenges and temptations. Guest speakers from our church community are invited to share their journeys of their Orthodox faith.

All students of these grades attend Divine Liturgy once a month, participate in hymnology classes (as appropriate) as well as discuss the lives of saints celebrated that week.

We encourage all parents to bring your children to us each Sunday. Each lesson of a given week builds on that for the following week, and thus the importance of your children’s presence must be emphasized. The set curriculum developed by

the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America Department of Religious Education, the liturgical hymnology, the participation in the Divine Liturgy and the many projects carried out throughout the year provide a complete picture of our Catechism Program.
