Reactions 1239 - 14 Feb 2009 S Interferon-α-2b First report of lipoatrophy: case report In November 2004, a 20-year-old woman started receiving SC interferon-α-2b 3MU three times weekly for melanoma. She experienced minor injection site reactions and acute urticaria during the first few doses, and developed symmetrical depressed plaques on both thighs in April 2006. She had not alternated injection sites on her thighs for 18 months. Interferon-α-2b was discontinued and a skin biopsy was performed, which showed a perilobular lymphocytic infiltrate with lobular atrophy. Lipoatrophy persisted 6 months later. Author comment: "We present herein what we believe is a new adverse event associated with interferon alfa treatment. Repeated injections at the same site could cause lipoatrophy without previous local reaction, but we believe that local reaction could herald lipoatrophy as well as necrosis." Vall´ es L, et al. Lipoatrophy associated with interferon alfa adjuvant therapy for melanoma. Archives of Dermatology 145: 98-99, No. 1, Jan 2009 - Spain 801135567 » Editorial comment: A search of AdisBase, Medline and Embase did not reveal any previous case reports of lipoatrophy associated with interferon-α-2b. The WHO Adverse Drug Reactions database contained seven reports of lipodystrophy [WHO-ART], but no reports of lipoatrophy [MedDRA] associated with inteferon-α-2b. 1 Reactions 14 Feb 2009 No. 1239 0114-9954/10/1239-0001/$14.95 © 2010 Adis Data Information BV.
