Epoetin αPure red cell aplasia in an elderly patient: casereport

A 76-year-old man with refractory anaemia developed purered cell aplasia during treatment with epoetin alfa.

The man, who had psoriasis, normocytic anaemia and a lowerythropoietin level, started receiving SC epoetin alfa 150 U/kgthree times weekly due to a decline in his haemoglobin levels. His haemoglobin level subsequently improved to 11 g/dL.After 10 months, he had a sudden decline in haemoglobin level(4.2 g/dL), and a low reticulocyte count. On bone marrowbiopsy, histology was compatible with pure red cell aplasia.Serum samples revealed the presence of anti-EPO antibodies.

Epoetin alfa was discontinued and the man receivedcorticosteroids and a transfusion. [Patient outcome notstated.]Luraschi A, et al. Pure red cell aplasia in a patient affected by refractory anaemiaduring alfa-EPO treatment. Haematologica 93 (Suppl. 1): 522 abstr. 1364, Jun2008. - Italy 801119432
