Purchasing Agents Meet in New York

No DOUBT the fact that buying chemicals these days is a matter of standing in

line and hoping there is some material left when it is your turn, rather than checking the market on a price basis, served to curtail the strictly chemical session at the crowded convention of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, May 29 to 31. More than 2,000 buyers attended the sessions, many of which went on simultaneously in the banquet and ballrooms of New York's capacious Waldorf-Astoria.

Most interesting from a chemical standpoint were J. F . T. Berliner's talk on Du Pont's transmutation process for impregnation of wood with methylolurea, and the appraisal of the future of rubber by R. P. Dinsmore, Goodyear vice president in charge of research and development.

Since the announcement of its method of wood impregnation, Dr. Berliner told his audience, more than 2,300 firms and individuals have written for information or chemicals. Requests came from Mexico, Sweden, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand and inquirers ranged from pipe makers to shipbuilders. He stated:

Approximately 20 concerns are already installing equipment for carrying out the treatment, and a number of items of a military nature are being discussed from the standpoint of improving their properties or saving metal through the wood treatment it process.

A complete story of the Du Pont process, developed through parallel research with that of the United States Forest Service,

Ray P. Dinsmore was carried in the May 10 issue of CHEMICAL AND ENGINEERING N E W S . However, announcement of this talk held enough interest to cut short the session of chemical and allied industry purchasing agents being held in another meeting room.

Dr. Dinsmore, in his paper "Looking Ahead in the Rubber Industry", gave an enlightened survey of the rubber situation as it is likely to develop during t h e year» immediately following the war.

During the years prior to t h e war, British and Dutch interests curtailed production to maintain a profitable market. Despite the restrictions, prices fluctuated widely from year to year. Daring the years 1931-33, average prices were respectively 6.1, 3.4, and 5.9 cents per pound. He contrasted this with the current 40 to 50 cents per pound price of synthetic (GR-S).

However, synthetic producers will surely have a breathing spell in which to become competitive with the natural product after the fields in the Far East change hands again. Small native estates will b e first to come back, according t o Dr . Dinsmore. T h e larger estates will be faced with a waiting period before equipment, reorganization of labor and management can be consolidated. H e feels i t will take at least four years before plantations are in full production if they are found intact.

The first year's yield should not be over 400,000 tons, which could not begin to fill the maws of a rubber-starved world. On the other hand, most of this production will come from small nat ive plantations which with low labor costs and simple equipment were able to lay rubber down in New York at 11 cents per pound.

The present price of GR-S is chiefly due to high-cost alcohol used in making butadiene and the inefficiencies t o be expected in an infant industry rushed into a man-sized job. However, it is expected that butadiene and styrene can be produced a t about 8 cents per pound. This , plus plant value adjustment, Dr . Dinsmore feels, presages postwar synthetic a t about 15.5 cents per pound.

With a competitive battle brewing between natural and synthetic rubber, Dr . Dinsmore leans toward synthetic because of the well-known advantage enjoyed by chemical processes, in t h a t they can be changed quickly and relatively cheaply. H e also feels that synthetic will be steadily improved technologically, which may further brighten the picture.

As to the possible demand, D r . Dinsmore explained that rubber consumption grew at the rate of about 200,000 tons every 10 years. There is likely t o be a healthy spurt after the war, however, not alone because of new uses, but a l so because of its value as a starting material for chemical reactions. Rubber derivatives suitable for lacquers, adhesives, a n d plastics can be made from the natural or synthetic material, and demand is certain to rise as the price level goes down.

The session for chemical and allied purchasing agents was addressed by S. D . Kirkpatrick, new president of T h e Electrochemical Society, and Editor o f Chem. & Met. He discussed "The Chemical Industry—Postwar".
