A numerical algorithm for solving a coupled problem of the air-sea-wave interaction*1

Abstract The “partly coupled” algorithm and numerical schemes are developed to solve a coupled model of air-sea-wave interaction, using the matrix and simple pivotal-condensation methods. The “partly coupled” algorithm is used to handle boundary conditions at the air-sea interface to allow for solving systems of the atmospheric and oceanic equations, as two separate systems. This “partly coupled” algorithm is simpler, more effective, and requires less computing efforts to solve an air-sea-wave coupled model compared to the “fully coupled” algorithm developed by Ly [1] for solving a coupled model of the baroclinic atmospheric and oceanic boundary layers. In the numerical schemes, the buoyancy terms of dissipation and TKE budget equations are used as conditions for rearranging equation coefficient vectors to satisfy stability conditions.

The mathematical coupled model of the air-sea-wave system is also presented. The model equations are written in the same form for both atmospheric and oceanic boundary layers, and include equations for momentum, the κ- turbulence scheme, and stratification in the atmospheric and oceanic boundary layers. In the model, ocean wind-induced wave effects are modeled by using boundary conditions for the turbulent energy dissipation at the interface in a κ- turbulence closure of the coupled model. Numerical experiments are designed for various geostrophic winds, wave heights, and wave ages under neutral atmospheric stratification to demonstrate an example in solving a coupled model of the air-sea-wave system. The numerical simulations show that surface wind-induced waves have strong effects on the basic physical characteristics of the air-sea system.

An atomic clock is a type of clock that uses an atomic frequency standard as its counter. Early atomic clocks were masers with attached equipment. Today's best atomic frequency standards (or clocks) are based on more advanced physics involving cesium beams and fountains. National standards agencies maintain an accuracy of 10-9 seconds per day, and a precision equal to the frequency of the radio transmitter pumping the maser. The clocks maintain a continuous and stable time scale, International Atomic Time (TAI). For civil time, another time scale is disseminated, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). UTC is derived from TAI, but synchronized with the passing of day and night based on astronomical observations.

Page 7: Electromagnetic braking: A simple quantitative modelusers.ntua.gr/fokitis/ListProposedStudentPresentations2006-2007... · L. N. Ly Department of Oceanography, Naval Postgraduate School,

The most accurate time scales are moderated by precise astronomical measurements and the insertion or removal of leap seconds. "Atomic clocks" are really frequency standards that provide pulses at precise intervals, typically 1 Hz or 1, 5, or 10 MHz. They must be carefully synchronized with the beginning of a UTC second, and leap seconds must be accounted for, in order to produce "atomic time".

The first atomic clock was built in 1949 at the U.S. National Bureau of Standards.

For information about how to get the time signals of an atomic clock, see radio clock.

How they work

Frequency reference masers use glowing chambers of ionized gas, most often caesium, because caesium is the element used in the official international definition of the second.

Since 1967, the International System of Units (SI) has defined the second as 9,192,631,770 cycles of the radiation which corresponds to the transition between two energy levels of the ground state of the Caesium-133 atom. This definition makes the caesium oscillator (often called an atomic clock) the primary standard for time and frequency measurements (see Cesium standard). Other physical quantities, like the volt and meter, rely on the definition of the second as part of their own definitions.

A microwave radio transmitter fills the chamber with a standing wave of radio waves. The cesium atoms absorb the radio waves and emit light. The radio waves make the electrons move farther from their nuclei. When the electrons are attracted back closer by the opposite charge of the nucleus, the electrons wiggle before they settle down in their new location. This moving charge causes the light, which is a wave of alternating electricity and magnetism.

A photocell looks at the light. When the light gets dimmer, electronics between the photocell and radio transmitter adjusts the frequency of the radio transmitter. This adjustment process is where most of the work and complexity of the clock lies. When a clock is first turned on, it takes a while for it to settle down before it can be trusted.

A counter counts the waves made by the radio transmitter. A computer reads the counter, and does math to convert the number to something that looks like a digital clock, or a radio wave that is transmitted. Of course, the real clock is the original counter.

Abstract We present Doppler-free Rb two-photon absorption data which support the hypothesis that semiconductor laser noise is dominated by a pure phase-diffusion process. We measured near Lorentzian shapes for both the laser and two-photon absorption spectra and a slope of 3.7 +/- 0.3 for the curve generated by the two -photon absorption width and laser width. This spectral shape and slope is in excellent agreement with the Mollow model, which predicts a Lorentzian spectral shape and a slope of 40 for weak-field, two-photon absorption excited with a pure phase-diffusion field (Lorentzian spectral density). In the process of making these measurements, we implemented the first Doppler-free, two-photon absorption experiment with a diode laser. This technique, based upon diode lasers, could be useful for making compact inexpensive laser spectrometers and frequency standards. The semiconductor laser's sensitivity to optical feedback makes these experiments particularly challenging. As a result, we developed qualitative and quantitative methods for estimating and reducing the amount of optical feedback in a diode laser system. These techniques could have commercial as well as other scientific applications. As part of the discussion, we include a new technique for in situ characterization of Fabry-Perot interferometers used to measure laser spectral shapes. We also present a method for generating quantum -limited-noise tunable sources based upon ramping the temperature of the laser instead of the current. This technique should be useful for future work involving the study of semiconductor and fundamental laser noise in nonlinear atomic processes. -41.
