The dipropionitriles are excellent solvents for most organic compounds other than ali- phatic hydrocarbons with which they are immiscible. Their ability to act as selective solvents permits the separation of many mixtures of compounds which are difficult or impossible to separate by other methods. SELECTIVITY. The selectivity of the di- propionitriles in many separations is many -times that of known selective sol- vents. IV example, a single extraction separates benzene of better than 90% purity from a mixture with heptane. The COMPAAIV ahilitv of these solvents to differentiate between minor variations in structure is demonstrated by the separation of mono- methylaniline and dimethylaniline. Two hundred theoretical plates would be re- quired to effect separation by distillation while only a six-stage extraction is re- quired to partition the mixture between heptane and β,β'-oxydipropionitrile. SOLVENT RECOVERY. Extractive meth- ods may also be used for solvent re- covery. Among those developed for the recovery of /3,/3'-oxydipropionitrile from extract solutions is that of a hot water extraction based on the low solubility of this compound in cold water and com- plete miscibility in hot water. SUGGESTED USES. The data presented in our bulletin may suggest a use to you in your separation problems. It is suggested that their use be investigated in the puri- fication of hydrocarbons and the refining of tall oil, vegetable oils, and wood rosins. AVAILABILITY. The dipropionitriles are available in trial lot quantities. Λ\ e sug- gest that our data and a sample" of β,β'- oxydipropionitrile be obtained for pre- liminary evaluation. We shall also be glad to supply samples of β,/3 ; - iminodi- propionitrile and β.β'- thiodipropionitrile.
