y New Paint Doesn't Peel Celanese has applied for a patent on what it claims is a new way to keep exterior polyvinyl acetate paints from peeling and blistering. The technique: adding small amounts of aromatic solvents (e.g., xylene, toluene) to the water-thinned formulation. Pressure sensitive tape pulls film of conventional emulsion paint from test panel at right. The new paint penetrates heavily chalked surface and adheres to asbestos shingle at left; pressure sensitive tape won't pull it off.
• Two new emulsifiers for pentachloro-phenol have been developed by Emul-sol Chemical. One is for a 40% penta-chlorophenol concentrate in pine oil, the other for a 15% concentrate in aromatic solvents, Ernulsol says. C 1
• Instantreat is a soluble complex phosphate developed by Calgon to give water systems protection against lime scale, corrosion, and rusty iron water. It is for use with solution feeding equipment for small water systems. C 2
• Six new tritium-labeled compounds are now available from Tracerlab. They are: estradial-6,7-H-/?-acetate; methanol-Η (methyl labeled); methyl-H
iodide; sodium acetate-Η; stearic acid-9,10-H, and styrène. C 3 • New line of conductive adhesives comes from Emerson & Cuming. They are epoxide based, come in paste form, and can be cured rapidly at moderate temperatures, the company says. They give rigid, low electrical resistance solids that adhere to metals, plastics, glass, and ceramics, according to the company. C 4
