The importance of ν oscillations.
They measure fundamental parameters of the standard model. Mixing angles, neutrino
masses and the CP phase δCP are fundamental constants of the standard model. Massive
neutrinos and in particular Majorana neutrinos would be a major extension of the model.
They are a probe of the GUT scales . The smallness of neutrino masses is connected to
the GUT scale through the see-saw mechanism.
They are directly linked to many fields in astrophysics and cosmology : baryogenesis,
leptogenesis, galaxies formation, dynamic of supernovae explosion, power spectrum of
energy anisotropies, etc.
They open the perspective of the measure of leptonic CP violation.

θ13 → 0 ⇒ The 3x3 mixing matrix becomes a trivial product of two 2x2 matrixes.
θ13 drives νµ → νe subleading transitions ⇒the necessary milestone for any subsequent search:
neutrino mass hierarchy and leptonic CP searches.

T 0ν1/2 = 1.19 · 1025 years ⇒< mββ >= 0.05 − 0.85 eV (95%CL)
T 0ν1/2 > 1.8 · 1024 years ⇒ mββ < .2 − 1.1 eV che non e pero in grado di escludere
completamente il claim di HM.
Esperimenti futuri gia approvati:
CUORE, 130Te, con una sensibilita mββ = 0.024 − 0.14 eV
GERDA (fase I), 76Ge, con una sensibilita mββ = 0.09 − 0.29 eV

At least 4 phases of Long Baseline experiments
1) 2001-2010. K2K, Opera, Icarus, Minos.
Optimized to confirm the SuperK evidence of oscillation of atmospheric
neutrinos through νµ disappearance or ντ appearance. They will have
limited potential in measuring oscillation parameters. Not optimized for
νeappearance (θ13 discovery).
2) 2009-2015. T2K (approved), Noνa, Double Chooz. Optimized to
measure θ13 (Chooz × 20) through νeappearance or νedisappearance.
Precision measure of the atmospheric parameters (1 % level). Tiny
discovery potential for CP phase δ, even combining their results.
3) 2015 - 2025. SuperBeams and/or Beta Beams. Improved sensitivity
on θ13 (Chooz × 200). They will have discovery potential for leptonic
CP violation and mass hierarchy for θ13 ≥ 1◦. In any case needed to
remove any degeneracy from Nufact results (see P. Hernandez et al.,
hep-ph/0207080)
4) Ultimate facility: Neutrino Factories or high energy Beta Beams.
Ultimate sensitivity on the CP phase δ, θ13 , mass hierarchy.

NOνA is a Long Baseline experiment using the NUMI beam from Fermilab
Now being used for MINOS (732km) away.
It will be located 810 km from Fermilab at Ash River.
νµ νe oscillations θ13 and the mass hierarchy.
NOνA DetectorGiven relatively high energy of NUMI beam, decided to optimize NOνA for resolution of the mass hierarchyDetector placed 14 mrad (12 km) Off-axis of the Fermilab NUMI beam (MINOS).At Ash River near Canadian border (L = 810km) : New site. Above ground.Fully active detector consisting of 15.7m long plastic cells filled with liquid scintillator: Total mass 30 ktons, 15.7x15.7x130 m.Each cell viewed by a looped WLS fibre read by an avalanche photodiode (APD)

The BeamPROTONS: 6.5 x 1020 protons on target per year.
Greatly helped by Cancellation of BTeVTermination of Collider programme by 2009.
A gain of a factor of > 2 in numbers of protons delivered.
Longer term: Construction of an 8 GeV proton driver: x 4
25.2 x 1020 protons on target per year is the goal.
The Beam: x 2No antiproton production batches in Main Injector: x 11/9 = 1.22
No downtime for preparing collider shot. No time for antiproton transfer from accumulator to recycler. x 1.176
Transfer time of 12 booster batches to Main Injector (0.8 sec). Instead transfer them to recycler during Main Injector cycle, and then transfer in one go (0.067 sec) from recycler to Main Injector. :2.2 sec/1.467 sec = 1.5
1.22 x 1.176 x 1.5 x 3.4 x 1020 protons/year = 7.3 x 1020 protons/year
Negotiated 6.5 x 1020 protons/year with Fermilab management.
Status of NUMI/MINOS: Near detectorThey get ~ 2.5 x 1013 protons/spillSpill: either 2.2 or 3.8 secs. (Depends on antiproton cooling)Delivered so far: 0.8 x 1020.
With 2.5 x 1013 and 2 sec spill 2.5 x 1020/yearWith a factor of ~ 2 from stopping collider
~ 5 x 1020

CorrelationsIn vacuum and without CP violation:
P(νµ−νe)vac = sin2 θ23 sin2 2θ13 sin2 ∆atmwith ∆atm= 1.27 ∆m2
32 (L/E)
For ∆m232 = 2.5 x 10-3 eV2 and for maximum oscillation
We need: ∆atm = π/2 L(km)/E(GeV) = 495
For L = 800km E must be 1.64 GeV, and for L = 295km E = 0.6 GeV
Introducing matter effects, at the first oscillation maximum:P(νµ−νe)mat = [1 +- (2E/ER)] P(νµ−νe)vac
with ER = [12 GeV][∆m232/(2.5x10-3)][2.8 gm.cm-3/ρ]~ 12 GeV
+- depends on the mass hierarchy.Matter effects grow with energy and therefore with distance.
3 times larger (27%) at NOνA (1.64 GeV) than at T2K (0.6 GeV)
Resolution of mass hierarchyFraction of over which the mass hierarchy can be resolved at
qual amounts of neutrino and antineutrino running: 3 years each assuming Phase I.Near the CHOOZ limit the mass hierarchy can be resolved over 50% of the range of .
T2K Phase I can only resolve the hierarchy in a region already excluded by CHOOZ. Because of its lower energy.
Some small improvement if we combine T2K and NO A results

NOνA would welcome European groups
Possible CERN participation ? (LC interested).European groups already in NOνA:
Athens, College de France, Tech. Univ. Munich, Oxford, RutherfordSeveral Italian groups interested.
