Mellefont, formerly vice president and cashier of the National Capital Bank of Washington, has heen elected treasurer of the AMERICAN CHEM- ICAL SOCIETY by the Board of Direc- tor.-. Mr. Melle- font took office on Feb. 1. A native Wash- ingtonian, the ικην irea surer attended the American In- stitute of Banking in that city and studied commercial banking and invest- ments at the Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University. Starting at the age of IS as a runner in the Riggs National Bank of Washington in 1926, Mr. Melle- font rose to assistant cashier and assistant manager of its Park Rd. Branch. In 1943 he left Riggs to become vice president and cashier of the National Capital Bank of Washington, then a $2 million institu- tion which he helped to reorganize and expand to an $11 million concern. T h e office of treasurer as now consti- tuted is a full time position, in con- trast to previous practice. Mr. Mellefont, who succeeds Robert T. Baldwin, recently retired from this office, will be located in the ACS building in Washington. He will handle receipt and disbursement of all Society funds, much of which was pre- viously handled by the secretary's office because of the location of the treasurer's office in New York. The general ledger, journals, and other accounting records previously handled by the treasurer, will be kept by the controller, William Muehl- hause.
