Theme: Beginning Language Concepts
Beginning Language Concepts
Goals and Objectives:
• The student will use core words to participate in a cooking lesson.
• The student will use verbs to say simple phrases.
Targeted Vocabulary:
• clean • drink • learn • get
• make • eat • put • mix
Materials Needed:
• Materials will vary based on the News-2-You recipe
Direct Instruction:
• Describe and model each target word on the device. If possible, you may want to act out the words as well.
• Model two word phrases that include the target words. For example, “make cookies”, or “get that”. Prompt the student to say simple phrases.
• Read the News-2-You recipe with your student. Review all the target words in the list. Talk about the core words the student can use to talk about the recipe.
• Have your student role play with another student. Have them use their device to direct the other student’s actions to

complete the recipe. For example, “get bowl”, “mix in” or “clean bowl”. Have the other student pretend to do these things without ingredients.
Differentiated Instruction:
• Have your student help with a cooking lesson by using what the learned when role playing. Follow the directions for making the recipe in the News-2-You newspaper. Have your student direct the activity by using their device to read the directions to the class.
• Connect the device to the computer with a USB cable or Blue Tooth module. Let the student practice writing the target words into a word document. Insert
• Make a picture recipe book by importing graphics into a word document. Ask the student to write captions using core words. For example, import a graphic of a bowl and spoon. The student can use the words mix, turn or clean in a simple phrase.
• Extension Activities:
• Model and teach other core words that you may use in your lesson. Make sure that the student knows the meaning of each word before teaching the lesson.
• Take pictures during the entire cooking process. Add the pictures to a document to create a picture recipe. Be sure to include pictures of all your students. Have your student use their device to tell what is happening in each picture. Include a final page where each student comments on whether or not they liked what they made. For example, “yuk”, “good” or “I don’t like” etc.
