    ABSTRACT In our days, besity is globally consid-ered to be the most essential health problem with a variety of consequences. Statistics show that the life expectancy of obese people is about a decade shorter when compared to the normal. In Europe, 40% of men and 30% of women are considered to be overweight, while 20% of men and 25% of women are obese. Ac cording to Eurostat, Mediterranean countries, amongst them Greece, show the highest rates of obes-ity in Europe. The purpose of the present review is to describe and critically appraise the literature referred on methods and techniques in obesity treatment. In addition the review is referred on nurses role in the perioperative and home care and in the prevention of possible complications, the adaptation and the recov-ery of patients who face surgical the obesity. Obes-ity has been increasing in the past few decades. Two types of operations have proven to be effective: those that restrict gastric volume (banded gastroplasty) and those that, in addition to limiting food intake, also alter digestion (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass).
