Introduction The word disaster is derived from

Middle French désastre

Old Italian disastro,

which in turn comes from the Greek

pejorative

prefix δυσ-, (dus-) "bad" + ἀστήρ (aster),

"star“.

The root of the

word disaster ("bad star" in Greek) comes

from an astrological theme in which the

ancients used to refer to the destruction

or deconstruction of a star as a disaster.

Definition :

A disaster is a natural or man-made (or technological) hazard resulting in an event of substantial extent causing significant physical damage or destruction, loss of life, or drastic change to the environment.

Definition :

A disaster can be ostensively defined as any tragic event stemming from events such as earthquakes, floods, catastrophic accidents, fires, or explosions.

It is a phenomenon that can cause damage to life and property and destroy the economic, social and cultural life of people.

Core concept :Droughts :

Drought is unusual dryness of soil, resulting in crop failure and shortage of water for other uses, caused by significantly lower rainfall than average over a prolonged period.

Hot dry winds, high temperatures and consequent evaporation of moisture from the ground can contribute to conditions of drought.

Droughts :Drought is an extended period of months

or years when a region notes a deficiency in its water supply whether surface or underground water.

Generally, this occurs when a region receives consistently below average precipitation.

It can have a substantial impact on the ecosystem and agriculture of the affected region.

Although droughts can persist for several years, even a short, intense drought can cause significant damage and harm the local economy

Types of drought

Meteorological drought :related to rainfall amounts.

Hydrological drought :determined by water levels in reservoirs.

Agricultural drought: related to the availability of water for crops .

Agro-climatic zones of Maharashtra

Facts :132 districts declared under drought terror .

There are 6,201 villages where the kharif yield

is below 50 paise and 1,552 villages where the

rabi yield was below 50 paise.

3,299 villages in Marathwada region affected

by drought

Only 9% water was left in the dams compared

with 30 per cent last year.

Facts :The four districts are most affected,

although almost all the eight districts in the region are facing acute drinking water problem.

Almost every family in Marathwada region is spending a substantial part of its salary on buying water.

residents of Bankawadi are forced to drink smelly, slimy water from a well that in better times even animals would refuse to use.

Impacts of Drought

The impacts of drought can be categorized

as economic, environmental, or social

A. Economic Impacts

B. Environmental Impacts

C. Social Impacts

ECONOMIC•Costs and losses to agricultural production•Costs and losses of livestock producer•Losses from timber production•Unemployement•Financial strain on institution

ENVIRONMENT

• Damage to animal species

• Hydrological effects• Damage to plant

community• Increase in air

pollutants• Loss of wet lands• Lower water levels in

reservoirs, lakes, and ponds

• Restrains on water use.

SOCIAL•Health•Mentral stress in population•Reduction in nutrition•Loss of security•Anxiety•Depression

Drought management:3 major components of drought management :

1. Monitoring and early monitoring

2. Risk and impact management

3. Mitigation and response.
