word disaster ("bad star" in Greek) comes

from an astrological theme in which the

or deconstruction of a star as a disaster.

A disaster is a natural or man-made (or technological) hazard resulting in an event of substantial extent causing significant physical damage or destruction, loss of life, or drastic change to the environment.

Drought is unusual dryness of soil, resulting in crop failure and shortage of water for other uses, caused by significantly lower rainfall than average over a prolonged period.

Hot dry winds, high temperatures and consequent evaporation of moisture from the ground can contribute to conditions of drought.

Droughts :Drought is an extended period of months

or years when a region notes a deficiency in its water supply whether surface or underground water.

Generally, this occurs when a region receives consistently below average precipitation.

It can have a substantial impact on the ecosystem and agriculture of the affected region.

Although droughts can persist for several years, even a short, intense drought can cause significant damage and harm the local economy

Types of drought

Meteorological drought :related to rainfall amounts.

Hydrological drought :determined by water levels in reservoirs.

Agricultural drought: related to the availability of water for crops .

There are 6,201 villages where the kharif yield

is below 50 paise and 1,552 villages where the

rabi yield was below 50 paise.

3,299 villages in Marathwada region affected

by drought

Only 9% water was left in the dams compared

with 30 per cent last year.

Facts :The four districts are most affected,

although almost all the eight districts in the region are facing acute drinking water problem.

Almost every family in Marathwada region is spending a substantial part of its salary on buying water.
